    My rivers are a torrent and the good still waters, too far away to be classed as ‘local’, so Paul, I’m doing the next best thing on working my way through your multitude of vids. Always something to learn and funny and always enjoyable. You are appreciated👍

    Another brilliant vid. Great information and I appreciate the time you take to explain such detail. I was out on Tuesday at my local river using silver fox spinners for brownies. I managed to lose 6 of them in trees and in snags. I was about to give in completely but started casting better. The river was pretty high with snow melt so was very difficult to fish but I will be back again when conditions improve and try again. It's defo trial and error this business but I'm not for giving in 👍
    I'll be out in the coming week to try out my light setup for pike at my local canal and will keep a few of your tips in mind.
    Thanks again

      +jinxy mctavish Nice one pal, good to know these videos help. Just keep at it mate, try not to lose so much gear as its costly but the practice is crucial. That will help you lose less lures and also eventually catch more fish. Try changing your trebles to single hooks for a bit while you get better at casting. If you do end up snagging a tree, the singles bend out much easier.

    I agree, it is about getting out and about being "in the field" to learn about spinfishing or fishing with lures. That is also why all the gear- and spot-talk makes few sense if one does not simply learn by doing.
    In the end, what you gotta do sooner or later is get to know your local waters, play around with lures, rods, depths, colors, and so on to figure out what works. And of course enjoy that, that's the fun of fishing - being innovative, creative, curious.

    Lots of handy information in this video - And having returned to fishing after probably a decade of being away from it I have yet to catch any pike on my local river/canal even though I started the very first day last October and went out at least once a week or every other week fishing during the winter period. Down the same stretches of river/canal with different lures and not a single tap or a follow.
    Joined a club, spoke to a few members and they told me that most of the big fish had been cleaned out by the local residents over the years but a boy did catch a small pike while he was messing around and not really paying attention. Whether or not this is true or not is anyone's guess but the folks seem adamant that there were pike in there.
    Ive tossed around smaller 10-15g spinner baits and soft lures too but not had much luck with a perch hitting it either. And so my journey continues.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey buddy. Yes definitley a journey. Perch fishing is much tougher these days but at some point you will have a good day, that i am sure. Same with the pike, it will come. But give yourself a break and some fresh scenary and see what else is about. See if you can swap a thousand good casts in the wrong place to one rubbish cast in the right place, and i bet you'll catch. Also plenty of good content on the channel and check out the latest video as it's another cnal tips video similar to this one. Tight lines, and keep enjoying it!

      +Kristian Buus cheers Kristian. Good luck tomorrow mate. Just get to know that lure and forget about catching for a while. Once you are working the lure right, in the right depths and in the right spot (where feeding pike are) the catching is easy.

    Sound advice again mate, I tried this stuff some years back when jerkbaits etc came out, did no good -fishing is hard out here to be fair. Tried drop shot again, finally got a couple, then switched to micro lures and got more n bigger perch, plus a jack. Bought a couple of jerk baits and got decent pike whilst playing around seeing how they fished. 2 barriers passed, -belief in the method- I didn't believe it worked on fish round here for some reason, and confidence in the method once you have broken the blank barrier.I wouldn't have tried again if I hadn't watched your stuff, said it before, most channels are catching videos and you don't learn owt, ok some run over the basics, but skimp out on detailed stuff. When I did parachute training in the mob, the para schools motto was "Knowledge dispels fear", yours should be "Knowledge catches fish" lol.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having confidence in any fishing method means you do it more. Same with any lure or lure method. some people get lucky and catch on a new lure or method right away, others struggle. It helps when you get lucky and pick the right time and the right place. For me it's more important to know you are doing the method or fishing the lure correctly and then you can be confident that on that day if you didn't catch you did all you could. Having a few lures and a few methods means you can try something else. You will find there are days when you do the same thing over and over and you catch fish. Then another day that method doesn't work but you try another lure and bang, fish on.
      As i've said before, I'm not really here to just try and look like the best angler ever. It''s great to catch a few nice fish and share them on here but I find that the story is much more important or the help that is in the videos. I fished a spot one morning, camera rolling. Stood in my first peg and cast a small shad out trying for a perch. Caught a pike about 5lb on that first cast. After I had caught 5 pike in about 6 casts on the small shad it was obvious no perch were here so I switched rods and started using pike lures on more suitable tackle. After not much more than two hours of fishing in that one spot, I had caught 35 pike. I came home and attempted to make a video. The foottage was me just catching a pike, and then another, and then another. no real story to the video, no real lessons other than I had just so happened to have found a spot that was rammed with pike. My lures weren't better than any others, my technique and methods weren't better than any others, my ideas weren't better than any others. I would have just made a video for the sake of it, and to make me look good. this channel is me being me. Helping a few people, having a lauch, catching a few fish and hopefully helping inspire a few people to get out and give it a go and I can safely say I have done that so many times from young kids to bored men in retirement. There's no clickbait, no boobs on my thumbnail images or ridiculously misleading titles to draw in millions of hits. I just hope a few of the right people find my videos and enjoy them for what they are meant to be and when someone such as yourself watches a few, picks up a few tips and then goes out and catches a 106cm on jerkbait that they didn't really believe in before, that's job done for me mate, that's all i need in return. ;)

    Great advice paul, ive blanked the pretty much everytime I've been out recently, missed one fish on a burt because I was distracted @ the very second the fish took it on the way back up! Fished a couple of venues with a new heavy setup and not seen a fish apart from that. I'm considering downsizeing and trying to fish for smaller perch and pike and if I find a few, changing to a heavy setup again cause its getting pretty soul destroying.( and sore on my arms!!) So I think its time I started from scratch and learn how to use a couple of lures really well.( maybe just take 3 small lures and 3 bigger ones) I've binged watched a load of your videos recently and learned loads, like I've noticed most of your takes are between 6 foot out and right at your feet. So I'm going to try a new venue, find some "fishy spots" and get a feel for it with a small ratteling crank bait and search some fish then change to a bigger lure and learn how to use it properly.

    Where you fish is important - miles of canal are like mud slides with a 2 foot depth even the barges struggle to get through. I practiced hard for weeks covering miles switching lures to 0 bites and 0 follows. Then drove out to a couple different canals that had clearer water and more depths, started to land fish doing exactly the same techniques with the lures i already had. I have since been back down my local canals again hoping for even a small jack to produce knowing i had improved but again absolutely nothing. This knocks your confidence especially when someone says theres fish there when there just isnt as the conditions drive the fish elsewhere. Many don't live by thriving canals lakes and reservoirs so anyone in a situation like myself (inner city trash canals with no rivers) realise it is where you are and not just how your fishing. Find clearer water in more suitable locations/conditions and at least then you have a chance to catch.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All good info there mate and yes yu do sometimes just have to put in a bit of leg work. Regardign the muddy canals. Some of the midlands canals are very muddy coloured and 2ft deep, if you get on them early morning before the boat traffic starts then just slowly dragging a lure along the deck works. Not the most fun fishing but it does work. Good for zander also in those canals and even better if you get near an inlet or flowing water.

    • @MIlManMatty
      @MIlManMatty 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      River Piker found just that today m8y, how I never seen it before I dont know but a water inlet and a small patch of lilies (only ones for miles lol) the canal widens so the waters not as murky as the rest, enough to gimme a glimpse of hope anyway. Will take some shallow lures n jigs down this week and hopefully a fish or 2. Not having to drive an hour n half for a couple hours fishing would be a god send 😊

    another great video with great tips can you use a heavy duty fixed spool real ie shimanos to cast 5 and 6 oz lures with or will that be to heavy for those kind of reels??

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +andrew reed cheers Andrew. Yes if you get a quality reel they will be perfect for it. Don't go for a cheap reel, look at something like a Shimano Calcutta if you like the shimanos or Curado 300 are a nice reel. I'm using an Okuma Komodo 364 for similar sized lures.

      +Ultra Light Fishing Diary I run out of luck plenty of times. You know what it's like, some days you roll up, flick out a lure and it's smacked straight away. Another day you go you can't catch a cold. Knowing what your lures are doing means you then know you have worked the swim as best you can and given yourself a chance and that's all you can do.

    Hi mate, love your videos. Just trying to get into lure fishing on the Severn. Want to target perch, but there are pike to low doubles on the stretch. I am confused about rods. Any advice on what gram rating I should go for? I wont be chucking huge lures, think i will start off with single hook soft plastics, just to get confident with handling the fish, easier then trebles. Looking for a cheapish rod to get going. Was thinking about 2500 reel, 20lb braid, with a trace because bound to hook a pike at some point.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate. If you want to target perch then you need to be looking between 1 and 20g roughly. Probelm is there's millions of options and also lots of personal preference whether you go really light or on the heavier side. But a 3-15g rod lets you fish 2-4 inch shads which is a good size for perch. You can go much smaller and target lots of small perch with something like a 1-9g rod and drop shot also. Hardest part is knowing exactly what you want when you aren't really sure what you will enjoy doing. The river Severn is a big river in parts so you might need a bit of weight to cast far, get the lure down and combat the flow. So having a tiny rod might mean you struggle but the 3-15g (anywhere around that) will let you use a 10g jig head and a softy. So many rods so just have a look and go for what you like the look of and like you say, no real need to spend silly money to start off. If anything, spend more on a nice reel as you can keep that for years and use it on other rods anyway. Trace is very wise mate and will stop the bite offs and let you catch a few of those pike that will show up.

      +Mark Sliger cheers Mark. People catch on all kinds of lures. yes some are better than others at doing things but they will all work. Fish grab things with their mouth to find out what it is so eventually one will grab your crappy lure. It's a shame the pike get a rough ride over your way pal. What a super creature they are but at least you have learnt that. tight lines bud hope you find one of those monster pike next winter!

      +River Piker oh I will hopefully tonight I don't have a boat to go after em when the water heats up so depending on what happens here in a little bit I might be letting em alone till fall n start focusing on bass and carp but yea they get a bad rap cuz people complain they eat to much of the pan fish which is stupid cuz when they don't eat them there is way to many plus the same lake our state record Pike came out of the same lake holds the state record for perch and bluegill so I don't kno why they complain and the walleye and hardcore bass guys don't like them much either Pike have a thing for walleye haha the thing is they like the big ones they just can't catch them they run into the smaller ones fishin for bass but if u kill the smaller ones there is no bigger ones it really annoys me haha I just enjoy what I catch no matter what and they always stay alive on my watch cuz I just like to catch them I don't like to eat them

      +Mark Sliger Same over here pal we have people that claim the pike are just killing everything. They don't realise how the natural balance works though. Like you have described, those same places that produce the big fish of other variety are the same swim that produce the big pike. Take the big pike out and you get an explosion of tiny to small pike that the bigger pike would control as they eat them. That upsets the balance and you have small of all species. You can't educate pork mate.

    Hello paul, this was a video I needed to see. Im a bait angler first and foremost. I have lure fished in the past when I first took predator fishing 20 years old more serious. I struggled back then on larger lures, even when fished irish lochs, then I started to sting together some nice perch and zander, with the odd jack on lighter tackle and lures. I have only since returned to lure fishing after 10 years out of it, I love using smaller lures under 30grams. I don't have much confidence in larger lures, both in catching and unhooking, basically, watching this video as got may attention again. but I suffer from lower back problems so chucking out 10-12in baits is a killer after 5 casts, I often get joked at with my mates in my circle because I lure fish sitting on a tackle box lol. any tips for back problems????

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +PredatorBites UK I think you already know the answer. Heavy lures can be hard work and at the end of a long day even top athletes like me :) can be aching a little. You either need to stick to the smaller lures or if you do use the heavy lures make it for shorter sessions. With the big lures, think about what lures you actually need. Don't carry all your collection. A shallow runner, a lure that goes 5ft and a heavy soft plastic to get down 10ft plus. That's all you need to be honest so don't go with many more than that. If you enjoy bait fishing, take your lure rod and have a cast around your baits. fish for ten mins and put your feet up for an hour and then have another ten minutes. You'll also pick up bonus fish either by catching them on lures or getting them to come in to the swim and then instead pick up your bait so a winner either way. Lure fishing is meant to be fun, so keep it that way. Don't make it too much like hard work.

      +River Piker you are totally right mate, I have learnt to only take what I need when bait fishing, but as u know with lure they capture the anglers sometimes more than the fish themselves. lol, I need to take this advice, its common sense, but sometimes u need someone to point it out to ya. thanks paul, nice one pal :)

      +PredatorBites UK We're all guilty of it at times mate. Learning venues is key because then you can learn which lures you need for each and then only take those few.

    how would you recommend fishing a canal? should i fish the same spot for a while or should i cast a few times and move further up?

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need to find the fish first, so you need to cover some water. Try not to mess around changing lures too much, just go with the theory that you'll see or feel something as soon as you get near fish. Once you do find a fish then be sure to give that area a bit more attention. Also look out for similar spots on your travels and fish those places a bit harder. usually lock gates, boats, marinas and bridges are the places where the perch hang out but with so many people lure fishing these days they might have moved on and can sometimes be found in a featureless bit of canal.

    • @Gsgshzh
      @Gsgshzh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +River Piker Thanks for the advice, what would u say is the best time to fish the canal because i have been fishing the canal later in the day around 7 o'clock and haven't been getting much luck. I have recently bought 2 of your lures so hopefully this will increase my luck.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some days the big fish are on the feed first thing and last thing but that said I have caught them at all random times in the day and don't worry too much about the time. The thing with predators is there maybe be certain times of the day that they go on the hunt, but they are also opportunistic hunters and if something is put in front of them they have a go. You might find some waters do have certain rules though, so be sure to try at a different time.

    But dose the same principles apply when fishing on a lake I keep plugging away but everyone tell me it's not a lure place but I'm determined to make it work

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same principles will work mate, this is all about getting you tuned int o your gear which helps massively. Problem with lakes is there always seems like so much water out there that you can't reach. Depending how small the place is, if this is the case, then it might be that there's only so many pike in and they have become weary to lures. I would expect this time of year they are in slightly deeper water and not chilling in the margins. But in spring time they should be looking for warmer waters and through the summer they will be chilling in and around weed beds often in shallow water. So that's at least a good time to see if you can get a few pike to take. If you can figure out the contours of the land or find some way of working out the depths that might help you work out where the pike might be. Failing all that, whack a jerk bait on and cast it as far out as you can (best for casting) and work it back. I'm sure at some point a pike will show up, either a follow, a swirl or something.

      +LP3Cruisesandfishing I'm mostly a lure fisherman these days. some days I add a bit of dead or live bait fishing but other than that, not much else. I only really think about pike, then more pike, and more big pike.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rob. Funny time of year right now as it is. Also a million people all lure fishing means there's not many easy fish left to catch, they are all a bit wiser. Location is key and if you can find a few fish that haven't just been caught it will make your fishing easy, if not it will make it hard. As the video explains, learn your tackle and your waters and also don't spend too much time fishing places where it's not happening. Always remember with lure fishing there's a really good chance some predator will take first cast so you'll either catch a fish, feel a bump or see a follow. If that happens you try everything in that spot for a while if not keep moving until you do. You won't catch fish if they are not there. Travel light, keep the spells short so it's not constant long hard days. remember if you wanted to catch fish then go to a carp puddle and sit there with your bait and bag up all day, that's what they are for. Lure fishing is about the freedom, the excitement, playing about with lures and gear and generally just mucking about. then all of a sudden you catch a few fish and it all seems to be happening and it's a right good laugh. Enjoy it pal and good luck!

      +River Piker It's frustrating because I know there must be predators in the stretch of canal I fish as there are lots of features and masses of fry in the water at the moment.
      You're right about catching goldfish, I could but it's just not for me. I love being on the move.... and my new baitcaster set up!
      Thanks for the support and the reply.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You've got the right idea for me pal. Stick at it cos one day you will go and do exactly like you have done before and the fish will be there and feeding and you'll finally get the predators you know are there. sometimes there's so much fry about it means the fish are well fed and not always chasing. Sometimes there's only a small feeding frenzy, for example at first light. all hell breaks loose for half an hour and then there's calm.....and nothing.....

      I can't stress how important it is. For some people, they are naturals at lure fishing. They get out, on the right day, do ir right and catch fish. for others it'sn not always so simple so working at it and learnign your gear is the vital bit for me that will in time, put those fish on the bank.

      I am really new to lure fishing so today I went to a local carp puddle I paid for 2 rods for the day 1 rod I set it up swim feeder, ground bait etc etc but instead of sitting on my arse waiting for the bait runner I set up my spinning rod to practice my retrieves knowing full well I was going to catch nothing as there are no pike in there, I might have got lucky with a perch but I did not, instead I got something way more valuable I got to know my kit better, so for me it was a win......I did catch 6 Bream though on the feeder rod so it was a good day apart from the snot ! Tomorrow I am hitting the club river for some more practice with the spinner rod.

      Brillaint buddy, thats a great idea. Learning how each lure works in the water, how it casts, sinks, floats and so on is really improtant. Experienced lure anglers often do things without thinking, the mix up the lure retrive as a matter of routine. New lure anglers often have to be told these things and sometimes the tinniest change can be the trigger. Keep at it mate, it's not the easiest time to catch right now unless you know where they are hiding.

    • @rokhnroll
      @rokhnroll 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hit the river today and it was hard going there was 3 of us lure fishing and no one caught, one guy was fly fishing for pike and the other was using 4 way soft lures, I was mixing it up with texas rigged shads and mepps spinners today still had a great day though, tip i have found to prevent getting those annoying wind knots in the braid is to wet your spool of braid first gives it a bit more weight and helps to sink the line quicker as well !

Anyway that's going of topic. I'm finding it hard going if I'm honest. Iv tried my best to use all these tips and am getting to the point where I think it's down to the location/venue I fish.
