  • Here's my top 5 light lures. Use with a light outfit for perch, chub, trout, pike, zander and even salmon. Recommended to use with a light lure rod 1- 20g range, 1000-2500 size reel, 10-20lb braid, 20lb wire trace.

    +Neb Sanday Hi mate. The lure is a Relax Kopyto shad. Available in lots of sizes so you can get small 1-3 inch for perch up to about 6 inch for pike. I know LureLounge.co.uk have some in the smaller sizes I was using in this video.

    Another cracking video Paul.
    Glad you made it top 5 lures and not top 20 or you would have cost me a fortune.lol.
    Still got to get a chatterbait and then that's me done on lures.
    Love all the top five with the Koptyo being my number one, but then again I have used that more than the others.

      Steven Wild Wait until I do one for each lure set up though Steve. lol. Yeah can't beat a kopyto, you've proved that too. Bang on is that lure, in all sizes.

    Just a thought, a friend of mine recently showed me rigging the soft 4play the same way as you have, only difference being he split the tail in 2 and reckons it's killer

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      robertb162 Never thought about the split but sounds good. If you're catching it's working. Great way to fish them side hooked as you know. cheers for the tip I might give it a go.

    Looks , like you do not use any spoons , do you ?
    Me and my wife used to throw these "Vibrax" spinners quite a bit during previous years , most likely from our little boat .
    To be able to toss them right along the bottom structures of our favourite swim at 8-14 metres , I had added homemade leadheads to them , the favourite of my wife was a meaty size 7 silver "Vibrax" , having become bare of any silver plating after years of use , it still caught her pike , zander and big perch .
    Still carrying some smaller size 3 and 4 "Vibrax" spinners along nowadays , ..... to keep them swimming deep in the river currents, I'd also attach leadheads to them .
    A happy and "fishy " New Year to you ,......greetz , Dieter

      No you're right I don't even own any. Always another lure to buy. lol
      Great tips there mate. The tiny spinners struggle with depth as you know so that sounds like the way to solve the problem.
      Happy New Year to you and your wife Dieter, hope it's a super year for you.

      I was refering to such detachable weights as pictured :
      www.ebay.de/itm/2x-Anti-Drall-Vorschaltblei-Bleikopf-f-Spinner-14g-o-9g-Balzer-/380587158340
      Got quite a few of these , some of them since 20 years , ..... but as it seems, they're discontinued nowadays , could hardly find some in the web .
      Another great spinner for medium fast river currents is this one :
      www.abugarcia-fishing.de/catalogue/koeder,885/spinner-morrum,5432.html
      Strangely it does not appear on the UK version of the ABU site(select top right corner of page) .
      The "Mörrum Spinner" is named after a famous Swedish salmon river , it's been around for several decades now , .......due to it's heavy keel weight it does never twist your line .
      It casts a mile and apart from deep pools of slow to moderately fast flowing rivers it also scores in stillwater , in particular to be worked along the bottom structures of deep gravel pits or deep natural lakes , .........it has been written, that despite it's relatively small size it would also attract the bigger ones of pike and zander , not to mention perch !
      Greetings , Dieter

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should do a video Dieter. Most people over here just use simple spinners so you could learn us plenty.

      River Piker
      Maybe I will some day , but right now we are into predators closing time in my area , no more lurefishing for zander and pike until May 1st ,.......should not get caught casting lures now , LOL .
      Only in Hamburg fishery restrictions are a bit less harsh , one could still fish lures for perch during predator's closing time , but naturally one should only carry typical smaller perch lures along then .
      So far I've picked a website for you , guess it's of Swiss origin , luckily an English version is available , .....I bet , you'd enjoy the read :
      www.spinnfischen.info/e/
      Greetings , Dieter

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jon Fisher Cheers Jon. Yeah they do catch pike too. If I target pike I will often go with bigger lures but I do catch plenty on these smaller ones too. I think the only reason I didn't catch any so far is they seem to be all in spawning mode at the minute but I expect to catch them when they settle down.

      Luke Turner Sure can mate. Get to LureLounge.co.uk they have loads of choice. If you do buy from there, don't forget to use the money off code if you spend over £25, from a recent video I did.

    • @JamesN976
      @JamesN976 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Company called wob-art do some nice lures. I've got their lame fish lure & caught loads of pike with it, it's only about 5g but casts pretty well with my mates rod that casts upto 70g. I've got the sinking version but it sinks so slowly you can literally stop when u see a pike a lot of the time they have a go.

    thanks mate was really looking forward to this video. I bloody blanked today but I think it was due to the poo coloured water. I need to get that chatter bait next and give that a go. thanks for the video mate

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to help mate, enjoyed doing it. There's another part to it which I'll put up tomorrow. Just me having a further chat which will help too. Chatterbait might have made the difference today but just keep in mind these times are hard for the ultra light gear. Keeping mobile is key and finding where they are hiding is your goal. Water colour doesn't help as you noted. Bright blue sky and high pressure goes against us too, if you believe all that. Seems other blanked today, as I check all my internet thingys. I was at work so your day was by far better.

    Another great video Paul. It seems like your making these vids just for me. I've been stuck online looking at dozens of light lures wondering what you were using then bingo! Up comes another brilliant video with all the info. You ought to write a book cocker.
    Another big thanks from me.
    Robin.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem at all Robin. Chubalot asked me to do it but knew others would benefit too. Keep seeing the same questions pop up on Facebook. Some good advice and bad advice offered but to a new lure angler, how do you know which is which? There's a whole load more to lure fishing, and it can get complex and technical. I'm a rough and ready piker mostly, not really finesse or fancy technique. You won't see me drop shotting or texas rigging but I'll still catch fish. So ignore all those techniques for now and start at the basics with lures like the ones I show. When the going is tough and you're not catching, remember my top bit of advice, go find them.

    Already have the rapala jointed shads from seeing your earlier vids... gonna buy some chatter things ... I seen them working on the meet up you all had... wich happened to be in a place where iv blanked haha. Ahh I'll get there in the end lol

  • @harrybatt998

    The canal I fish holds Perch & Pike, & I've been told the Salmo Hornet & Rapala jointed shad rap in small sizes are a good choice, but I'm confused as to whether or not to buy sinking or floating?
    The canal I fish is around 2 to 3 feet deep, with deeper locks.
    Can anyone help, please?

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there's no right or wrong answer buddy, both will be good, they just work slightly different thats all. That canal is shallow so expect to bump the bottom alot which ever one you buy and if you get a jointed shad rap then get the shallow version (they come with long or shorter lip)

      Thank you for the heads up mate.
      In addition to the favourite lures you've already mentioned, are there any others worth a mention?
      Btw, my braid & fluorocarbon is due to turn up today - and I've bought 9ib Daiwa x4 j braid, 5ib Berkley fluorocarbon, and have a Shimano Sienna 1000, and HTO 0.5 > 8g rod.
      Does this sound well balanced do you think?

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@harrybatt998 yes mate that is nice and light and will help you fish. Only word of caution is with the cranks you might lose one or two to snags when you fish so light.
      It's not easy to get it all right. too light and you lose lures and too heavy with the braid and you lose the sensitivity. But rather than me suggest use this or that, just go fishing and see how it goes. What one person think s is right for them isn't right for the next guy. In time you will find out yourself what you prefer. Tight lines matey

      Cheers buddy.
      Will probably be going out for the 1st time this weekend, as I now have everything I need.
      I'm normally into bit bashing on the whip or Pole, but as the colder weather has set in, it's no longer a fish a chuck here and I don't like keeping still on a seatbox for too long - so doing micro jigging keeps me mobile.
      Many thanks for the info mate, & keep up the good work.

      Brilliant james, that's great to hear buddy. Now all you need to do is figure out what you did right. Was it the venue, the swim, the lure, the weather and so on. Just repeat what you did and you'll catch again. Keep enjoying it buddy.

      It was very overcast and slightly breezy, i saw the pike come up and take the lure. It was amazing couldnt of been better. Was on a 5g jighead but cant remember how i was working it. Will have to find out next time.
