      Cheers Jason. I can't really do anything else as i'm a down to earth kind of bloke. We have recently been working with a couple of companies and we have tarted up our appearance but it's still the same bloke underneath. If i can get a bit of gear, test it out and let people know if it is any good people can make their own minds up if they want it or not I reckon.

      The shoals of perch can be massive sometimes. With so many people lure fishing these days they may become shy to lures whizzing past their face, so keeping a lure in the zone for a long time can encourage a hit so a good method. They don't always want to chase lures either. If you are lucky, you can find shoals of hundreds of perch.

      River Piker- I can easily binge watch your channel for like 2-3 hours no problem. I'm located in Edmonton Alberta, Canada where pike thrive and I'm always interested in new techniques and how other people fish and what they use for pike, and it seems every time I watch your videos I seem to pick out something I didn't catch before. You keep making them I'll keep watching!

    Boy are you in trouble mate - my wifes after your blood lol. After a lay off of nearly 7 years from fishing I started watching your vids and others like Doms, Brents etc. Result was that I've started up again lure & dropshot loving to be back but things like tackle & methods have moved on so much, so all the vids are a godsend to me. Luckily I'm also a Yorkshireman so down to earth runs in my blood it also means I too have access to canals mostly the Chesterfield and South Yorkshire, local tackle shops & agm have made a fortune out of me but it's great to be back, all the best mucker.

    Another nice session for the perch. Iv been catching well on small 3 in swim baits. Iv noticed the perch here don't school up like they do there especially the big ones there lone wolfs. Only in the big lakes do I see shoals of them. Caught a nice river pickerel the other day in super clear water. Water is getting colder at last.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can find the shoals of biggies on the lakes its just ridiculous what you can find. I often find the rivers or canals we get a few of the larger fish and that's it. 1st Oct today so for us over here it marks the start of pike season for most.

    cant wait to get back on the pike now that me and my dad are all kited up. just gotta wait until end of the month to go to our monster lake, first time i went their with the owners son, hooked a perch so big i thought it was a carp, went there last winter, only caught 1 jack but the teeth marks on it were fresh and they were a good 6 inches wide. never fished with jerkbaits before now but i got some busters from lure lounge and im hoping to catch my first 20.

    I like the videos with ady in the boat with fish finders etc cos it's different. but these type of videos are my favourite cos it's the fishing that I do myself, walking canals or small lakes mostly lure fishing for pike but also light lure stuff for perch too, even tho I always end up with jacks rather than perch lol 👍

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sean you sound like me pal, i'm a jack magnet too. Often thats down to the type of lure I use, often small cranks that bring in the jacks. If i wanted to target more perch i'd go ned rig or small shads but I just enjoy the plugs and happy to sift through a load of jacks for a few big perch.

    • @bigseanSM
      @bigseanSM 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a small lake near me that I've seen perch in, but I can't get em even going down to smaller lures, so in the end rather than blank I step back up in size and have a play with the many jacks in there, do u think the jacks are making the perch extra cautious and therefore super picky about taking a lure?

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pike and perch tend to hang about together, they are used to each other. I think the big perch are smarter than the small jacks though. They may see one or two thrashing around on your hooks and it might make them cautious, I dunno? Just keep trying. May be give something like the ned a go. Low and slow and in there face and see if that triggers the big perch. It's easy to get distracted either going small and bagging tiny perch or going bigger and bagging jacks. Soe days you have to just decide its big perch and stick t it, accepting a blank, but knowing if you do get a fish it might be the one you wanted.

    Great video, and totally agree with you on using traces and not fluorocarbon, just been onto Martin and ordered up some zman neds, cheers again

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate. I just find that light fluoro offers me no protection at all from pike. If the pike luckily manages to get hooked in the scissors then you get it in as the teeth aren't rubbing against the line. If the lure is in the mouth, at some point that thin fluoro is going to brush against some super sharp teeth. Only one winner. Me and my buddy Ady fished the other week and I was using 1.5 inch soft lures with fluoro for perch and he was using 3 inch soft lures with 20lb wire trace for perch. We both caught plenty, he caught more big perch than i did, i caught more perch than he did but all mine were small. Then I hooked a low double pike that I played for 30 seconds before it bit me off. Wished i'd never even tried that experiment now. Fish will be fine though as I had a barbless hook.

    Hi mate,I notice in your vids that when you get a bite, you strike into the bite.Having spent the last few years carp fishing (zzzzzzz) the fish is pretty much hooked as you lift into it.
    I lost a good size chub on the river yesterday and can't help thinking it's because I'm not striking hard enough- especially as I'm fishing with a light soft rod.I tend to let the fish take the lure itself rather than set the hook...
    Any hints and tips for striking?
    Cheers mate!

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate. That's so true. you are not the first to ask me this. I had a guy who sent me a few messages because he was missing fish. I was straining the old grey matter trying to figure out what it was, then in one message he mentioned carp fishing. Bingo! I had the answer. You're already on to it which is good and I'm glad you learned that yourself. It's all about reprogramming your reflexes. With lure fishing you have to hit everything, and i mean everything. Tiny bump, hit it. Line goes slack, hit it. With braid and a good rod you can feel everything, and you will know what your lure should feel like. You'll also learn what it feels like when you hit bottom or hit weed but always go with the theory of hit everything. I will say though, that some days, depending on what lure you are using and how the fish are hitting. That some days you have to change and resist hitting everything. As an example, we were perch fishing. Lots of little bumps and when you struck you missed it. Funny bites and the answer was to resist the strike on any tiny tap and just wait for the rod to wrap round and then lift into it with a bit of pace. Never missed a fish after that.
      With chub, they often hit pretty hard and on light gear you should feel it straight away. They have a good size mouth so chances are the lure is in their mouth. Just set the hooks hard. One thing to remember is that you should experiment with your drag before you start to fish. Set it so that if you gave a big yank, the spool lets some line off. Last thing you want is to set the hooks hard and it be a big fish and then you snap off. Your rod will bend and a bit of line will come off the reel. Obviously every rod is different but even a soft rod will have enough power to set the hooks on the lures. Obviously don't use a tiny rod and massive pike lures or that wouldn't work.
      If you end up pike fishing with larger lures, you have to really hit the strike hard. What often happens with a pike is they grab hold of the lure. Think dog with a stick. If you don't strike hard, you only pull at the lure. That dog and stick, the dog still has a good grip. so back to pike and lure, you might have to hit it hard enough to move the lure in the mouth so that the hook actually digs in otherwise nothing actually moves and the pike just lets go of the lure. if you were using a 2inch shad the lure would be in the mouth and a normal strike would work, often leaving the hooks in the scissors. With a big lure, the lure might be right across the pikes mouth so that hard yank is needed. Hope all that helps a bit but if you need any more help give me a shout.

    You should make a bonny fish compilation lol - question, how do you suggest catching perch that are really shy?

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thin down your tackle, go as light as you can get away with. You could go slower with the jigging, even leaving lures on the deck longer. Get the lures in their face and keep them there.

    • @thomasmorris9022
      @thomasmorris9022 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok - I might try some fluorocarbon as well maybe that will help (lol don't hate me). Ok, I'll try that, its just weird because if I go there and aggressively jig worms then it works, if I go there and ledger worms it works really quite effectively, but they don't take lures too well for some reason. I'll try and do that then, thin down and slow down. I just prefer lure fishing because its just more fun to me.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What would you prefer to eat, a real steak or a plastic one? It's not always simple this lure fishing lark, you have to trick them and it doesn't always work. Keep enjoying it pal that's all you can do

      I've not gone out and targeted them using just poppers but i've had a few in my time. Was out with a pal perch fishing last week and we were talking about poppers and told him to put one on. He had a couple off the top and couldn't believe it. Go give it a go mate. Lure fishing isn't' always so much about catching its about catching in fun ways and that's one of them.
