One of the best guitar solos in rock history. Mainly because of the way the band moves along with the guitar throughout the solo. It's just really well put together.
Hold the Line had a very distinctive sound when it was released back in 1978. There's not many singles have had as long a guitar solo. Always felt they have flown a bit under the radar. Highly polished limousine of a band.
I remember being up on a ladder painting my Dad's house and this song came on the radio. The DJ said, "Here is a new song by the group Toto." I remember thinking, "This song's great!" I bought the album as soon as I found it the store.
Such a simple guitar riff but the way it is delivered is so iconic and powerful… the tone on the guitar is ridiculously good too. I also have never noticed that harmony at the end of the guitar solo - really masterfully done.
There's a live concert online where Lukather plays the same guitar/setup - the recording isn't that good, but BY GOD he has a nice tone going there. Les Paul -something-something '58-something :) (I'm a keyboard player/mixer) // Sonic Peak Studio
My father passed away last Thursday and he used to love this song. Whenever we would go on long drives together and this song would come on we would look at each other with excitement and we’d sing it as loud as possible with the windows open and not have a care in the world. I will miss those drives and I will always sing this song as loud as possible for dad. Love you dad❤️
You're doing a great thing showing your son the great classic rock of the past. I'm 37 with a 10 year old and I grew up on this stuff thanks to my dad.
I grew up hearing this on the radio. I always thought it was a great tune. I'm watching it in 2023 and I don't think I realized how off the charts good this song is! The vocals and harmonies are amazing and the band sounds so crisp.
The way Jeff’s drumming creates so much excellent tension without getting in the way of Luke’s wonderful solo… Man, that is just some of the most exciting music ever created, IMHO. Never fails to get my blood flowing, even after all these years. (Still have my original vinyl copy of this album that I bought when it first came out.)
@@TheIggypop1 Absolutely! And I just love his comments in various interviews when questioned about doing drum solos. He reiterated over and over that he just got joy from keeping great time, and he came up with so many innovative ways to do just that. No question why his nickname was The Groove Master!

I'll always have a reverence for this song. It was one of the first songs I learned to play on drums. Trying to learn triplets and swing beats. It's not the most difficult song to play on drums to be sure, but every base drum note, every fill, every open hi-hat, etc was done so tastefully. The entire song was produced magnificently, and the vocals and lead guitar are just iconic.
@@pauledwards9210 To play it properly it absolutely is. There are a lot of little dynamics in it, especially on the bass drum. However, kind of hard to compare it to guys like Billy Corbin, or Terry Bozio, etc, so to avoid that argument...It's not the most difficult, but yes, I agree it is not as easy to play as it may seem.
It's a great song, and deceptively difficult to play on drums, especially towards the end with all the extra kicks. It's still a fun song to play just keeping time with the bass, but it's a classic case of "make the hard ones sound easy".
@@johnhunter2294 Yep, as I was saying to Paul ^^ - To play it properly it absolutely is. There are a lot of little dynamics in it, especially on the bass drum. This great song by the great band Toto from the 1970's shows that musicians could still play a great lead guitar solo. Something that seems to be a lost art now a days.
Steve Lukather is playing a “distinct metal before it’s time” solo during this. People can still play great lead guitar solos. They just can’t play like Luke.
One of the most underrated guitar solos ever, especially for 78. There is some proper shredding phrases very uncommon for the 70’s not many guys were aware of the technique.

Such a simple guitar riff but the way it is delivered is so iconic and powerful… the tone on the guitar is ridiculously good too. I also have never noticed that harmony at the end of the guitar solo - really masterfully done.

Totally agree..
This is surprisingly difficult on drums
