1982, 14 years old, mom is making dinner, this song on the radio, playing outside until the street lights come on, the whole future in front of us. I kinda feel like crying right now, mom is 84 and not for this earth much longer, dad and so many have gone, all those memories and people and times so long ago, all gone though they seemed like they would last forever, but right here right now alive in my heart with this song

@@spartankongcountry6799 I'm old enough to actually admire a beautiful lady, without thinking about getting in her pants. I still am a man, but the music and the girl go hand in hand, no disrespect to anyone!!
1982...a very special time! I was 18 and ready to take on the world 24/7. Music was just unreal. Live concerts were the place be. So many great bands were pumping out timeless hits!

Toto, you are amongst my earliest music memories. I can still see me standing in the lounge, age 7, hearing Africa on Top of the Pops, because it was No.1 again, and feeling something calling me to a world far beyond my little town. I'll never grow tired of your music. I only have 3 questions: 1 How do you write a song like this? 2.Could this be the greatest middle 8 section of all time? 3. Why don't I possess a Toto album?
Absolutely agree I loved/love Toto. Africa dominated the charts but Rosanna and Hold The Line are brilliant. I never had their album but now I'm musically matured 🤓 Toto are great 👍
Their many types of songs and their type of music serve as a benchmark for other bands around the world. I happen to be from Indonesia and there is a band here similar to Toto, his name is Dewa19
Imagine growing up at the beginning of the golden era of music videos and this comes on your television. I would hum this jam while riding my bike, going to see my guys, and fell in love with this groovy tune. Sometimes I get down and want to go back to the 80's, see my family members who have gone on to the next life, have the innocence of youth, and rock out to jams like this all day long.
Funny thing is that I loved this song growing up and now I love it even more. The little things that Bobby Kimball does in between the main lyrics really enrich the song. For example, when he says " I never knew that losing you would ever hurt so bad". It's not the lyric itself,it's the way he sings and expresses it that is incredibly moving! This band hit it out of the park with this song!
Michael, they won five damn Grammies and record of the year for this... Exactly what is your definition of underrated? I'd like to get a little "underrated" like that.
I've known this song for all my life and never gave it another thought, even though I might have hummed it along when it was on the radio, and suddenly recently when I heard this song again, I realised how brilliant it actually is!
I went to a Toto concert with my mom a few years back. This song was hands down, one of the best songs I’ve ever heard live. The band just vibes together and gets the crowd to join in. Such an amazing group

Underrated? What the hell are you talking about? Toto sold tens of millions of albums, won several grammy awards and was literally one of the most popular bands of its time.
This is an amazing pop song of the highest caliber. These guys were pro studio musician aces and could easily play some technical stuff yet they wrote such catchy quality tunes everybody could dig.
um, no. I respect their impeccable musicianship but most of their catalog is cheesy af. Want proof? Listen to a "best of Toto" right now - not in the background, I mean with your undivided attention - and try to get past the 5th song. It's cheesy now, it was cheesy then, I just didn't know any better when I was a kid.
@@paulmayerpiano It's always pop after all. It's meant to be that way. If you look past the lyrics and the mood of the song, you'll realise that every member of the band is extremely talented. Rick Beato underlines exactly this in his "What Makes This Song Great" episode about this very tune, by playing each track individually and describing the function of each artistic element (chords, scales, rhythm...) in a clear way, even to people not familiar with music theory.
It's when 'pop' actually meant something. You were so damn good that it was popular.... nowit's just whatever the corporate shitbags decide you should listen to....pure garbage.
Yes, truly iconic! In the same league is that super long instrumental starting around 3:10 till the end of the song in Layla by Derek and the Dominoes. Epic.

MY FAVORITE SONG!!! I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it! Love the Westside Story feel to it, everything was just perfection in this song!
When I was a disc jockey on an retro pop station about twenty years ago, we kept this song on a CD as our backup music whenever the computer system would crash. So, every time I hear the song, it reminds me of calling engineering and staring at the phone and the walls waiting for them to come fix our problem, which they took their sweet time doing, like most tech people do.

When you get a group of supremely talented musicians together you end up with one of the greatest songs ever recorded.....a masterpiece.
Denny II One of my all time favorite songs and I’ve been intently listening to music for 45 of my 50 years! This song truly showcases Toto’s musicianship collectively and individually. What virtuosity, energy, and passion!
How many of you guys can actually watch a stunning beautiful and enjoy her beauty with out thinking with your little head?
@@tommypauly3249 What was the point of your comment?
@@spartankongcountry6799 I'm old enough to actually admire a beautiful lady, without thinking about getting in her pants. I still am a man, but the music and the girl go hand in hand, no disrespect to anyone!!
@@tommypauly3249 You're the only one who brought her up. The comments are full of people appreciating the song and not the woman
1982...a very special time! I was 18 and ready to take on the world 24/7. Music was just unreal. Live concerts were the place be. So many great bands were pumping out timeless hits!
How old are u now
@@Tuckyboy do math
don't make us jealous pls
i think imma start a band and try to make the 80e go back, 0.000000001 thats its gonna work BUT IF WE ALL DO IT, IT WILL WORK FUCK YEA LETS DOO IT, START LEARNING LESSONS ON INSTRUMENTS.... LETS FUCKING DO IT
@@elliottmaet2566 m8, chill out. Also ill bring the drums.
My Father played this song all and over when I was a little child
I’m really thankful for that. He always had great music taste !
Toto, you are amongst my earliest music memories. I can still see me standing in the lounge, age 7, hearing Africa on Top of the Pops, because it was No.1 again, and feeling something calling me to a world far beyond my little town. I'll never grow tired of your music.
I only have 3 questions:
1 How do you write a song like this?
2.Could this be the greatest middle 8 section of all time?
3. Why don't I possess a Toto album?
a big Puzzle of our Life .... still charging...
Absolutely agree I loved/love Toto. Africa dominated the charts but Rosanna and Hold The Line are brilliant.
I never had their album but now I'm musically matured 🤓 Toto are great 👍
Ikr, I do not own a Toto album either! Maybe they have a Greatest Hits we can ease ourselves in with?
Hi Jenny, guess you this side of the pond as well (TotPs) glad you like Toto. Part of the soundtrack of my life. Stay safe girl
This Is A Music Masterpiece In Every Single Way.
I only just discovered it at 39 and couldn’t agree more
Their many types of songs and their type of music serve as a benchmark for other bands around the world.
Perfect song❤
This was my mom's favorite song and I heard it almost every day when she made dinner. Incredibly nostalgic for me. Beautiful song
Yes yes yes!
The way he had the feelings come alive, made the song sound like exaltation and desperation all at once.
Phenomenal.
The drums on this track are absolutely phenomenal! ....damn 🔥
Jeff was a one of a kind
Only drummers, whether amateur or pro, know this. Brilliant drummer, RIP.
They are!
Shuffle brilliance!
@@basquehound1999 yes he was 💯
What a great time in life. The memories ❤❤❤
One of the most talented and underated bands ever. Their combination of pop rock and blues and multiple lead vocals are unqiue
Underrated by who exactly ?
.patrick swayze at 4:24 ..back up dancer in rival gang
Underrated... yeah that little band barely made it 🤣
Michael, they won five damn Grammies and record of the year for this...
Exactly what is your definition of underrated?
I'd like to get a little "underrated" like that.
They're = they are
Their = something belonging to someone
There = a place that's not here
I've known this song for all my life and never gave it another thought, even though I might have hummed it along when it was on the radio, and suddenly recently when I heard this song again, I realised how brilliant it actually is!
its because todays music is so bad .. back in the day .. this was "just another (good) song" but compared with todays music its a masterpiece!
You took the words out of my mouth
That's me exactly
I had a similar experience with "Africa"
OMG! I did that exact same thing!! I'm literally binging on this song.. after 30 years of not really paying attention to it!! WTH!!
If I had a time machine the 70s or 80s would be my first destination.
Toto is a great band.
me to
100%, there are songs i ditnt even know were from toto
One of the best of the best, ever.
If by "great" you mean "LEGENDARY" then let me tell you that you are correct sir!
Was.
The best song Toto ever recorded!
I will always remember seeing them live on French TV and my dad saying: those are real musicians, every note perfectly like on the record.
How cool is it when you haven't heard a song in years but as soon as it is played you know all the lyrics?! This song is timeless.
Impressionante não existe nada melhor do que as canções dos anos 70 a 80 e 90, para mim são esplêndidas e não me canso de ouvi-las.
Eu também estou preso entre 79 a 98 , detesto qualquer música de hoje .
3 Porcaro brothers,Lukather,Paich,Bobby Kimball and the rest. What Talent!! One of Best Songs of all time!!!!!
I Think David Hungate was on recording not video, He is a Tremendous bass player
Retro style is the best
I went to a Toto concert with my mom a few years back. This song was hands down, one of the best songs I’ve ever heard live. The band just vibes together and gets the crowd to join in. Such an amazing group

The drumming, the production! This song is phenomenal.
What a great song, I worked opening a fast food restaurant a little black girl run the front register was named Rose Everyone was sleepy eyed and all of sudden my boss started singing this song over the loud speaker to her , soon the whole restaurant was singing to this cute little black girl , what a great time in 1983 at BoJangles in Florence South Carolina Thanks toto
She probably just thought you were all racist
I cannot comprehend the talent all members of this band have. Love to 80s!
They well professional, studio musicians, not some kids making music in their parents' garage.
@@jdsheleg8332 Well they probably did that at one time.
This song is a masterpiece that many overlook. Vocals, grooves, solos are done to perfection...them horns!
Essa é top
Damn, what a band!!!
What a video!!!!!! 📺
Shut up. Nobody "overlooks" this song, it is well-known by a whole generation, a super hit. Go back with your "underrated" people.
💯 agree. It's epic
Such an eclectic style of song. Never sounds old. Timeless.
Yah, electricity.
A perfect song. It has everything. ❤️
A few songs have the power to take you back to that time and place but this one does for me. I was nine years old in 1982. I just want to stay there.
The musicianship still blows me away, decades later!
Thise drums blow many away, everyday
Very true
This band so underrated. One of the best band in 70s/80s.their music so creative. Very good music references for young musician.
Underrated? What the hell are you talking about? Toto sold tens of millions of albums, won several grammy awards and was literally one of the most popular bands of its time.
@@DennisDeSlager yes underrated amongst modern generation.
Learn what underrated means
@@JimmyJames10-k7v u know nothing about music market. I love toto since day one.
Underrated? Even the people in rural places here knows this song lol
This is an amazing pop song of the highest caliber. These guys were pro studio musician aces and could easily play some technical stuff yet they wrote such catchy quality tunes everybody could dig.
Toto. Classic song. Class of 84 methuen high
Africa is a great song and all, but Rosanna is on a whole nother level of music that songs rarely reach.
Song of that year 💪
So agree..eclipses even Eagles.....
Rosanna and Hold The Line are the best Toto songs in my opinion
0:00 - 0:03 I remembered almost the same legend intro
😏I don't know
maybe rock and roll?
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
lmao
This will be rick roll 2.0 PH edition one day. Mark my words :D
Toto's music has aged like a fine wine. What a great group of musicians!
Well said! Such incredible musicianship.
The video sure didn't though >>
Great group : -)
@@paulmayerpiano It's always pop after all. It's meant to be that way. If you look past the lyrics and the mood of the song, you'll realise that every member of the band is extremely talented. Rick Beato underlines exactly this in his "What Makes This Song Great" episode about this very tune, by playing each track individually and describing the function of each artistic element (chords, scales, rhythm...) in a clear way, even to people not familiar with music theory.
Incredible timeless masterpiece of music and song. A contribution to the enrichment of humanity.
Toto made so many great hits that are still loved today in 2021.
Masterpiece of pop music! A classic, well crafted, well arranged, varied. Beautiful music, always sounding fresh and sophisticated. I love it
It couldn't have been said any better my friend.... You mailed it.. What a perfect f@ckin song!
It's when 'pop' actually meant something. You were so damn good that it was popular.... nowit's just whatever the corporate shitbags decide you should listen to....pure garbage.
The synth and guitar solo from 2:30 to 3:30 STILL gives me the chills everytime!
Yes, truly iconic!
In the same league is that super long instrumental starting around 3:10 till the end of the song in Layla by Derek and the Dominoes. Epic.
Yep. That's the mighty Yamaha CS-80, right?
Grande grupo musical Toto, suas canções são eternas
Si, from America. 🍻
This is such a well done song, it has a lot of different sounds and works all together!
Quite good defined.
Hi ki
Real musicians!

That drum beats though hard af.
I attempted the shuffle ones on my drums got foot cramps...
yeah bruh
try kick slide on da hh..it's how i do it.
@Anjroo Bail Or Bonzo (RIP)
It's the Rosanna shuffle.
The drumming is so captivating that I never even appreciated how filthy the bass lick in the chorus is until now.....
Try this. There is so much more in this song but yes the chorus bass line is brilliant!! This vid allows you to hear it on its own with Jeff in the drums. After watching the video below you’ll be spotting all the stuff in the background every time you listen!

This song is special to me, because it was the last thing playing on my stereo when I shut it off to leave for the Air Force.
every single member of this band is so talented
all session musos, they were basically perfect at what they did.
Yes, just like Uhiah Heep
Ikr!! Ain't that the whole truth, & nothin' but the truth! So, help me musical gods!💖💯👋🏾
So true...in those days you had to be.
In what way?
Jeff Porcaro is still the gold standard…. The Rosanna shuffle is a legendary groove that any drummer must learn if they intend to take themselves seriously
My hubby is s drummer , and Jeff is a hero!!!
Gold? Honey, he’s the PLATINUM standard!
You don’t need to be a solid musician to recognize that this song is just the best: never aged and you can play it 100 times and always will find something new.

Rosanna loves this song. I can 100% prove this. 😉💯🥰👍
Isn't it amazing that even after many decades, there are still comments from a few hours on this video. damn the 80's are just timeless
I'm not as you would say a toto fan but who the hell pens this stuff, I've just listened to hold the line, Africa and this and WTF all 3 are musical master pieces. Good work fellas. 👏👏👏
Listen to their other stuff jeavo75, Toto have been mis-represented by the media for years. They are killer live too, have you checked out their live version on here of Weezer's Hashpipe?
Right on!
Toto had some really, really good songs.
No they do have some fantastic music. There's much more to Toto than "the usual 3". And they are killer live - check out their recent European tour on youtube.
totally agree
J Rush nah it doesn't, it just doesn't sound like the 80's anymore.

Yeah, maybe three
MY FAVORITE SONG!!!
I guess you wanted the system to go down then! Good back up music if there was any
I've been listening to this song since the day it dropped and it's still one of the best rock songs ever. Great groove, great vocals and super tight. An absolute classic.
