This is the method I learned from my Dad when I was 10-12 years old. He snelled everything. I'm 68 years old now and taught my grandson how to do this 2 weeks ago. Flip is truly a living legend!

@@TheBlunted247 so when you cut the loop, which I have you can’t change your butt section because of the nail knot as opposed to a loop to loop. I tie tapered leaders so depending on the fly I’m casting or the fish I’m fishing for I might want to change it. Then you have to cut the nail knot eat back at the taper in your fly line and re tie a nail knot. If you don’t like to to tie your own leaders it makes it even more of pain in the ass. They are exaggerating the impact the loop to loop connection has.
I've been flyfishing for over 37 yrs and when Flip talks, I still learn something. Great stuff from the great one. I pass this knowledge on to anyone willing to listen. We owe it to the future of the craft. Tight lines my friends.
This is one of the very reasons I fell in love with fly fishing and have devoted my life to it for the last few years; I am now a new fly fishing guide in jasper national park where exploring the rivers and streams. I tend to be a fast learner and get bored easy with many hobbies when I get to the point of stagnant learning….then lose interest soon after. Yet fly fishing never ceases to amaze me. Just SO many things to learn and refine every time I go. The community of amazing people around fly fishing is so supportive and helpful in passing on knowledge that I know I will never get tired of it. It gives me so much joy seeing people like yourself with more years fishing than I have living STILL in love with this sport and still learning. Shows this is easily a lifelong hobby/ pastime or in my case….career. Proves to me that I’ve chosen the right path. I can’t wait to learn as much as I can from the pros to pass on the torch to the generations following me!

I've been using nail knots for 40 years and learned something new today-the Smell Knot. Love it! I noticed it's a nail knot without the tube. The need for the tube is replaced by overlapping the 2 ends of the butt section over the fly line and then pulling the butt section through the loop created. Ingenious! Somebody had a lot of time sitting around to think this one up. Keep up the great work!

This method worked perfect for me. I have used loops for years and needed a better way to attach fly line to a leader. Flip’s method was just the ticket for me. When I was a beginner this would have been hard, and I appreciate that Mad River Outfitters makes it clear that loop to loop is best for beginners. Excellent channel with great fly fishing tutorials. Answered a question I’ve always had! It seemed to me that the less than solid connection of a loop to loop would interrupt the transfer of energy from line to leader. The common sense that comes from this man is refreshing. Many thanks Mike

That may have been the most captivating Fly fishing video I have ever watched. Flips explanation on the transfer of energy into the leader was presented so logically that I found my head bobbing up and down in the yes motion through out. He left no doubt in my mind about cutting off the loop. I learned the snell knot. And also made my final conclusion about using high visibility line. Not because he explained it but because his name is on it.

this was a great video! I've used a needle knot of late but this looks much easier...not to mention removing the loop to loop makes the line go thru the guides much easier when landing fish. looking forward to part 2. thanks again!
Brian is blessed to be friends with Flip Pallot, he is truly a living legend. This topic is old news.Brian has a tutorial on how to do this, which I learned from him, as well as how to whip a loop, thanks Brian. So I have a boatload of leaders tied up already using a micro swivel and a fly clip. Of course I have a Perfection loop on the butt section to attach to the fly line. A waste of time? I can't feel any resistance from the weight the loop creates when I cast. I'm certain Flip is right, however, not enough for me to change.
@@JoelSzymczyk Flip claims a whipped loop is much stronger than the manufacturer's welded loop. He always cuts it off and nail knots directly to the fly line now. The claim is the line shoots faster with less resistance and a tighter loop. But now, he's evolved into an "Anti loopper!". A bodybuilder wants to build his bicep, he'll do a curling exercise. Now there are a hundred different designer exercises to build your biceps, but really net the same results. Perhaps, fly fisherman need this same stimulate to be relative today? If anything, it makes for great conversation .
The two things that I learned from listening to Flip that have most improved my game are the importance/effect of control over the drop of rod tip on the forward cast, and the importance of conservation of energy and line speed through to the fly. Such nerdy little details but the way he breaks them down so easily speaks to how much of a wizard Flip really is
This is the best improvement that I've made! I fish in really small tight creeks going after native brook trout, and even with a 7' leader once in a while you will reel the line in too far and then the loops get stuck in the first guide, now the leader/ line goes through just like BUTTER!
Tks 4 the informative video. When I started fly fishing I feel the same as flip on the extra weight in the line. Affirmation by Flip. Tks again. God Bless n fish on!
Fantastic knot. Seems to be a nail knot in the end, but much easier to tie. Instead of putting the tippet end on the leader through as the last step (traditional nail knot), you lay it alongside as the first step, and then it's easy to put it through and snug it up. My nail knots always screw up after I pull the tube out and then try to put the tippet end through the void. This is much easier and much quicker. Thanks so much.
Brian. I like your videos. But I have to tell ya, Flip explained the Snell knot better than you did on other videos. 😆 Now I get it. As we speak I'm cutting off all the EVIL loops on all my gear. BTW, I am a huge fan of your educational videos and your shop! The best resource of all fly fishing for sure! Keep high-quality content coming!
It’s difficult for old timer’s to embrace new technology. I’ve fly fished for over 55 years and since the welded loop was introduced years ago by Rio, Orvis, SA and others and leader manufacturers started producing their tapered leaders with perfection loops, I’ve never had one issue that would make me go back to the old technology. And I’m a traditionalist in that I still fish my split cane rods as well as my carbon graphite rods. But that’s what makes FF so wonderful. Do whatever makes you comfortable. If you think you can catch more fish doing it the hard way then that’s what you need to do.
Could agree more! Obviously Mr. Pallot is a legend, but…. I’ve fished welded loops for a long time, never had a single problem. Streamers, dries, nymphs, from 2wt to 10wt, no issue and for the people who say it has to do with casting… well I’m no expert in physics but there is NO WAY it makes that “BIG” of a difference.
Yay Flip! Brian did teach to cut that loop off somewhere in one of his videos but I couldn't find it again. My poles are all rigged with loop-to-loop leader/fly line connections and every single one stops the line from going through that last 'ferrule' (?) and screwing up my casting. Now I know for sure and I get to fix all 3 of my poles' rigging. Lovely video! And marking each pole for the type of rigging and line weight is brilliant!
Been doing this for nearly twenty years... I bought a new spool & line at the shop I (eventually) wound up guiding for in Ketchum, ID, and when Dave F. (may he RIP) spooled it for me, he added a butt section. I bought a leader, cut off the loop and he showed me how to attach it to the butt section. My fly delivery improved significantly after that. I came, logically, to the conclusions that Flip discusses in this video. Other than the casting loop, the only loops in my line ever since have been non-slip loops and the occasional wind knot when I try something stupid.

Excellent Flip video! I loved hearing the logic of the snell knot leader connection and the practicality of a long butt section, but would like to see the complete leader recipe for trout leader the long butt section if it applies. Before watching this video I added a butt section (8" long) to fly line with nail knot and a loop at the other end for quick loop to loop to leader. I will stop doing that.
Great idea on marking the line weight of your fly lines with a Sharpie marker. I have a few reels in my case that the line stickers came off the reel and I really don't remember what the line weights are now.
I would totally agree with Mr. Pallot on loops. Loops in my view are only for beginners that don't know any better and for loop to loop connections for saltwater fishing, I usually do 5-7 turns unless dealing with a mono core fly line where I do 8-10 turns. Good info!
Loops aren't "for beginners" persay. They are convenient and people are landing trophies on them to this day after fishing for decades. There is no best way in this case fish the way you want loop or no loop.
Spot on with the leader advice, long butts! I also agree that a snell or nail knot is a smother connection/engery transfer, but I would only trust a homemade loop convection, preferably with 2-3 coated nail knots in the loop for saltwater beasties like GTs, YFT, billfish, whahoo, etc.
Appreciate the video, it is very informative. I also don't like those pesky "evil" loops. Many years ago an eastern sierra guide recommended the old Eagle Claw tapered Leader Links LL1 to attach leaders to fly lines...it's never failed & is a clean connection.
Good info. I learned to remove the loop 30 some years ago, but always used a Nail Knot. My question is... Does the nail knot also seal off the flyline tip? I notice I have to dress or clean my fly line tip more then I like. Or is cleaning it every time I go out normal? Also - I tie a piece of mono onto the end of the Flyline about 8 or 10 inches long then attach leader to that so I don't really ever cut into my flylines.

Love the knot. I enjoy using furled leaders though and wondering if you left the loop on the furled leader and then built this knot first, can you cut the loop off of the leader after the knot is built and secondly, can you "pull" the leader back through the knot? I am concerned the leader wont want to be pulled back through the snell due to the texture of the furled leader? Thanks
Hey Brian That’s some great info from Flip. Makes a lot of sense far as the physics of the flight of the line. I hope there will be another video posted (without boat interruptions) showing a closeup of the knot and to clarify leader length. From this, I’m understanding there are no mid sections in his leaders. Great video!

This video by Mad River/Flip Pallot was suggested to me by a fan from a local fly shop in Denver. I am still a little concerned about what this knot should look like when properly tied. 5wt F-WF to a factory tapered 7.5' - 12'(any brand). I keep getting a kink, not a straight knot! Any suggestions.
Good Video; I have been experimenting with this for years. My conclusion is if the loop on the end of the line is small and strong, the line and leader turn over fine. The snell is so similar to a nail know that either would work fine. Like the leader building formula as I use it all the time. Agree with the factory loops are not strong. They are OK for small species of fish but not for the salt.
Hi Brian, I've watch this video a few times now. I surely like the knot and theory behind it but..., my question is, can I apply this knot to a tarpon leader connection to fly line? Most "experts" advise going with the albright knot for tarpon because of the strength and the idea that it's less likely to strip off the coating on the fly line (of course causing the connection to fail).when under the stress of fighting a big tarpon. Is this knot the end-all-and-be-all leader to fly line connection even for large, heavy pulling fish like tarpon and GT' or should the albright be substituted in for the heavy weights?

This is a wonderful video! I have a #8 Airflo C.A.S.T. line (Canadian Atlantic Salmon Taper) and the built-in welded loop broke after a year. I tried this exact knot after searching for "nailless nail knots" on TH-cam. Unfortunately, each time I tightened up, the 30# leader cut right through the fly line; first the coating, like a wire stripper, and then the core as well! After six attempts and losing over a foot of fly line, I gave up and went to my local shop. They installed one of those Chinese finger trap loop sections, which saved the fly line, but is very stiff, particularly where they lashed it down with heavy tying thread. I'm too scared to try this knot again! Do you think this is particular to Airflo lines? Thanks again for these informative videos!

Same issue for me. I'm on attempt number three with RIO Permit line. WIth the past two attempts the butt section snell knot cut right through the line. After cutting off the loop I hope I' not screwed!
I was in a pinch and needed a Snell tool ASAP so I cut a portion off of my girlfriend's cooking whisk 😂 she still hasn't noticed and it makes a damn good tool!!
I've used this knot and will whip a thread over it and varnish it. Not that it needs extra strength but it slips even more easy through the rings, essential with longer mid and tippet sections and reaching to netting a fish might be difficult.
Thanks, just about to restart flyfishing after a 33 year break. Things have changed I can't remember loops on fly lines all those years ago, seem to remember fitting the leader butt end into the fly line. I'll cut the loops out for sure and Snell the leader. Is the loop a more dynamic way to attach a fly than the traditional knot types?
Does the increased length of butt section translate well to delicate dry fly presentation or is this specific to salt/warmwater stuff and streamer fishing? I cant imagine running 8+ feet of butt section fishing dries to wary trout on a spring creek. Definitely curious on how versatile this would be. Lots of great knowledge here to consider, thank you!

When you do change butt section with the knack knot you have to eat away at your taper.

The two things that I learned from listening to Flip that have most improved my game are the importance/effect of control over the drop of rod tip on the forward cast, and the importance of conservation of energy and line speed through to the fly. Such nerdy little details but the way he breaks them down so easily speaks to how much of a wizard Flip really is

This is the best improvement that I've made! I fish in really small tight creeks going after native brook trout, and even with a 7' leader once in a while you will reel the line in too far and then the loops get stuck in the first guide, now the leader/ line goes through just like BUTTER!

Fantastic knot. Seems to be a nail knot in the end, but much easier to tie. Instead of putting the tippet end on the leader through as the last step (traditional nail knot), you lay it alongside as the first step, and then it's easy to put it through and snug it up. My nail knots always screw up after I pull the tube out and then try to put the tippet end through the void. This is much easier and much quicker. Thanks so much.

It’s difficult for old timer’s to embrace new technology. I’ve fly fished for over 55 years and since the welded loop was introduced years ago by Rio, Orvis, SA and others and leader manufacturers started producing their tapered leaders with perfection loops, I’ve never had one issue that would make me go back to the old technology. And I’m a traditionalist in that I still fish my split cane rods as well as my carbon graphite rods. But that’s what makes FF so wonderful. Do whatever makes you comfortable. If you think you can catch more fish doing it the hard way then that’s what you need to do.

Could agree more! Obviously Mr. Pallot is a legend, but…. I’ve fished welded loops for a long time, never had a single problem. Streamers, dries, nymphs, from 2wt to 10wt, no issue and for the people who say it has to do with casting… well I’m no expert in physics but there is NO WAY it makes that “BIG” of a difference.

Yay Flip! Brian did teach to cut that loop off somewhere in one of his videos but I couldn't find it again. My poles are all rigged with loop-to-loop leader/fly line connections and every single one stops the line from going through that last 'ferrule' (?) and screwing up my casting. Now I know for sure and I get to fix all 3 of my poles' rigging. Lovely video! And marking each pole for the type of rigging and line weight is brilliant!

Been doing this for nearly twenty years... I bought a new spool & line at the shop I (eventually) wound up guiding for in Ketchum, ID, and when Dave F. (may he RIP) spooled it for me, he added a butt section. I bought a leader, cut off the loop and he showed me how to attach it to the butt section. My fly delivery improved significantly after that. I came, logically, to the conclusions that Flip discusses in this video.
Other than the casting loop, the only loops in my line ever since have been non-slip loops and the occasional wind knot when I try something stupid.

Excellent Flip video! I loved hearing the logic of the snell knot leader connection and the practicality of a long butt section, but would like to see the complete leader recipe for trout leader the long butt section if it applies. Before watching this video I added a butt section (8" long) to fly line with nail knot and a loop at the other end for quick loop to loop to leader. I will stop doing that.

Great idea on marking the line weight of your fly lines with a Sharpie marker. I have a few reels in my case that the line stickers came off the reel and I really don't remember what the line weights are now.

I would totally agree with Mr. Pallot on loops. Loops in my view are only for beginners that don't know any better and for loop to loop connections for saltwater fishing, I usually do 5-7 turns unless dealing with a mono core fly line where I do 8-10 turns. Good info!

Loops aren't "for beginners" persay. They are convenient and people are landing trophies on them to this day after fishing for decades. There is no best way in this case fish the way you want loop or no loop.
Spot on with the leader advice, long butts! I also agree that a snell or nail knot is a smother connection/engery transfer, but I would only trust a homemade loop convection, preferably with 2-3 coated nail knots in the loop for saltwater beasties like GTs, YFT, billfish, whahoo, etc.

Appreciate the video, it is very informative. I also don't like those pesky "evil" loops. Many years ago an eastern sierra guide recommended the old Eagle Claw tapered Leader Links LL1 to attach leaders to fly lines...it's never failed & is a clean connection.

Good info. I learned to remove the loop 30 some years ago, but always used a Nail Knot.
My question is... Does the nail knot also seal off the flyline tip?
I notice I have to dress or clean my fly line tip more then I like. Or is cleaning it every time I go out normal?
Also - I tie a piece of mono onto the end of the Flyline about 8 or 10 inches long then attach leader to that so I don't really ever cut into my flylines.

Love the knot. I enjoy using furled leaders though and wondering if you left the loop on the furled leader and then built this knot first, can you cut the loop off of the leader after the knot is built and secondly, can you "pull" the leader back through the knot? I am concerned the leader wont want to be pulled back through the snell due to the texture of the furled leader? Thanks

I hope there will be another video posted (without boat interruptions) showing a closeup of the knot and to clarify leader length. From this, I’m understanding there are no mid sections in his leaders.

This video by Mad River/Flip Pallot was suggested to me by a fan from a local fly shop in Denver. I am still a little concerned about what this knot should look like when properly tied. 5wt F-WF to a factory tapered 7.5' - 12'(any brand). I keep getting a kink, not a straight knot! Any suggestions.

Good Video; I have been experimenting with this for years.
My conclusion is if the loop on the end of the line is small and strong, the line and leader turn over fine. The snell is so similar to a nail know that either would work fine. Like the leader building formula as I use it all the time.
Agree with the factory loops are not strong. They are OK for small species of fish but not for the salt.

Hi Brian, I've watch this video a few times now. I surely like the knot and theory behind it but..., my question is, can I apply this knot to a tarpon leader connection to fly line? Most "experts" advise going with the albright knot for tarpon because of the strength and the idea that it's less likely to strip off the coating on the fly line (of course causing the connection to fail).when under the stress of fighting a big tarpon. Is this knot the end-all-and-be-all leader to fly line connection even for large, heavy pulling fish like tarpon and GT' or should the albright be substituted in for the heavy weights?

This is a wonderful video! I have a #8 Airflo C.A.S.T. line (Canadian Atlantic Salmon Taper) and the built-in welded loop broke after a year. I tried this exact knot after searching for "nailless nail knots" on TH-cam. Unfortunately, each time I tightened up, the 30# leader cut right through the fly line; first the coating, like a wire stripper, and then the core as well! After six attempts and losing over a foot of fly line, I gave up and went to my local shop. They installed one of those Chinese finger trap loop sections, which saved the fly line, but is very stiff, particularly where they lashed it down with heavy tying thread. I'm too scared to try this knot again! Do you think this is particular to Airflo lines? Thanks again for these informative videos!

Same issue for me. I'm on attempt number three with RIO Permit line. WIth the past two attempts the butt section snell knot cut right through the line. After cutting off the loop I hope I' not screwed!
Yikes I was just about to cut my loops off.
I was in a pinch and needed a Snell tool ASAP so I cut a portion off of my girlfriend's cooking whisk 😂 she still hasn't noticed and it makes a damn good tool!!
Many things can work as a stiffener.....that's one.
I've used this knot and will whip a thread over it and varnish it. Not that it needs extra strength but it slips even more easy through the rings, essential with longer mid and tippet sections and reaching to netting a fish might be difficult.

Thanks, just about to restart flyfishing after a 33 year break. Things have changed I can't remember loops on fly lines all those years ago, seem to remember fitting the leader butt end into the fly line. I'll cut the loops out for sure and Snell the leader. Is the loop a more dynamic way to attach a fly than the traditional knot types?

Does the increased length of butt section translate well to delicate dry fly presentation or is this specific to salt/warmwater stuff and streamer fishing? I cant imagine running 8+ feet of butt section fishing dries to wary trout on a spring creek. Definitely curious on how versatile this would be. Lots of great knowledge here to consider, thank you!
