    I have several of these including a spare in my vest. You can join two sections of tippet and also tie the fly to the tippet with this tool using the same method....only want 4-5 wraps for dry flies to reduce weight on the fly. I informally tested breaking strength against surgeon knots and improved clinch knots as well as hand tied barrel knots .... my hand tied knots were all significantly weaker vs my nail knots using this tool. This is a great demonstration of the tool ..... there are several TH-cam videos that show how to apply the same process and replace all the other knots for trout / freshwater fishing.

    When i started fly fishing i was 12 years old-The line came with a nail with barbs that you slipped into the fly line--Then tied on your leader-- and the fly--Just set up my new reel with your video and the "tool" is wonderful and Brian explains it very simple--Even a dummy like me can do it!!! I am now 70 years old so it proves you can teach an old Dog new Tricks. THANK YOU BRIAN

    Great video, well explained. I am a spin fisherman and I use mine for splicing lines instead of a blood knot (back to back nail knots/tube knots, 3 turns on 10 lb. line) and for solid connections such as connecting to split rings (4 turns on 10 lb. line). Tight lines and fair winds.

  • @dbmarshall11
    @dbmarshall11 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Great tutorial. I have found that using this tool for a nail knot splice is another great application when a double surgeons knot is too bulky. IMO, it's equal to the blood knot in strength, having a small & smooth profile, and much easier to tie using this tool.

We still fish together sometimes. Sorry to tell you that I troll fly's with fly gear of course and outfish all at the lake most every day. If ya want to learn that June is great but from April until August 21st. Late Summer is not recommended as those Whales might die. I'm curious about your "proper butt section" comment. I normally keep an old butt section or two on hand after I replace a 2x or 3x leader, including the loop at the end. When the fused loop on my line is about to fail, I cut the old leader to about 15" long and nail knot it to the line (with the failing loop removed. After trimming the tag ends the loop from the old leader is about 13", give or take, from the end of the line. I then simply attach the loop of my new leader to the loop from the old leader.
    I've never thought about the stiffness of the butt section in reto the stiffness of the line, but it's always seemed to work. Am I missing something here?

    I fish for Atlantic Salmon on the Miramichi river in New Brunswick. I was taught to attach leader to the fly line with a needle knot. Similar to a nail knot except you make a hole in the tip of the fly line with a sharp needle, entering in the center of the tip of the fly line, push up the fly line for half an inch or so, then out the side. You then push the leader up the same hole in the tip and out the side as well. From there you essentially tie a nail knot. Very secure, has never failed me. The wisdom as I was told was that the leader /fly line connection was much smoother if your leader came back in the guides while landing a fish by yourself, especially if the leader is in the guides and the salmon takes off for another run. I will pick up this tool to help tie the knot since it seems to work so smoothe and tie such a smooth knot,

    Super handy tool, i've been using it for few years now.
    Especially in the early or late hours, to tie in a fly when its hard to see.
    Also for delicate dry fly fishing, i would never use a loop on a flyline.
    to much splash on the surface, also it doesn't cast the leader as straight as a nailknot setup would.
