5:13 - It is actually Google's requirement that you cannot sell a phone with Google Services & Play Store without also shipping a shit-ton of other Google apps. Not sure about the Phone and Messages, but Google Photos is certainly a requirement, along with the rest of the junk. Previously, manufacturers like Sony had a set of their apps, but also Google's duplicate apps preinstalled due to this. I'm still amazed how so many manufacturers just swallowed it and deprecated their software with time, instead of fighting Google's monopoly practices.
Well, that’s not exactly how that works. The issue is, that most devices want to use the Google Play Store and GP services. Some android-based devices like the Kindle however, build everything on AOSP without using any GPS or GPA
@@delamcode I did say that it is only a requirement if you want to ship with the Google stuff. But if we are being very precise - you wouldn't be able to use a lot of modern apps on a Google-less Kindle or whatever, because applications themselves expect that you have Google Services installed. disagree on few things, like with the icon design with colors, the monochrome design is purposefully for digital well being, to reduce distraction, adding colors to it shift the direction for that. I also agree with them to just use google stock app rather than another separate app for that, anything against bloatware is a plus for me, but agree about the reskin, they could made it much closer to their visuals. I agree about the widget, it doesnt feel nothing enough. pretty, but yep, 60%.
making color dotted icon pack must be a huge pain. dots everywhere is pain, and the hole thing of monohromatic goal is to stop you from wasting time in social media. its better than you think. the date font is also in Nothing aestetics, Nothing style is not only dots but a copule fonts and keepeng android android. Also if you watch official nothing videos you know that they dosent do anything to quickly they do it in right tempo.
I really like the use of three different fonts: a sans-serif main font, a serif font, and the dot matrix font for accents. It strikes just the right balance, avoiding a cheap or overloaded look.
I have to disagree on some things you said: 1. The app icons are less readable because of the lack of color on purpose. They want you to decide which app to use because you have an intent and are looking for it actively, not because your eye catches the tempting colors of Instagram and you end up swiping reels for 10 minutes again. 2. I dig the serif font on the calendar widget. If _all_ of the UI was the dot letters, I think it'd look sterile and outdated. This combination of serif and dots is more unique and stylish IMO. 3. Not having own apps for phone, messages etc. is _exactly_ what most users (including me) want and are always asking for on other phones and OS.
I agree with #3 and to each their own for the 2nd take, but the recommendation for the icons was just to add the choice, so users can choose what they prefer. Imo more user choice is almost always better.
Well, I don't like using google apps for *everything*… especially because google photos keeps very aggressively pushing me to use their cloud service for my photos. I can understand that quite a few people prefer the google apps (and for some things I do too), but I think that just means people should be able to uninstall or install both manufacturer as well as google apps, depending on if they need them.
Everything that was good with android settings from back in the 4.4 release (over 11 years ago!) seem to have degraded into... nothing... by now. The old control centre with customizable panels was amazing.
Just a quick reminder, what you are referring to as stock Android is actually the Google Pixel “skin”. The real stock Android (Android Open Source Project / AOSP) is very bare bones, not really useable as an end user.
I’d like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Stock Android, is in fact, the Google Pixel “skin”, or as I’ve taken to calling it, Android plus Google Pixel. Android is not a usable system by itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Android system
The importance of color coding is the reason why Microsoft got a lot of backlash when they released Visual Studio 2012 with monochrome icons. People were used to look for a green triangle or a red square, and when they both turned white, it took you 3 looks to make sure you clicked on the right one.

A thing I cannot stand behind is your design choice of dot matrix-ifying everything! 💀 I understand it's the first thing people see, but their (i gotta say pretty) serif font is a big part of their design too. If everything was dots I wouldn't be able to read anything. I gotta say I understand that the phone and message apps being the defaults is pretty understandable knowing how small their team is, but I can't get behind making fun of their "bloatware-free" promises while comparing them with Samsung (famous for their bloatware on some of their phones, xiaomi too) And yes, I also do feel like they have been acting a bit too mainstream-y lately with some of the choices they've made with CMF (by Nothing 💀💀) Anyways, I love your vids, I truly loved my NP1 while I had it, and I think there could be another way to fix their UI choices, good video!
I haven't watched yet but this is a great video to make as Nothing actually listens to feedback and might implement some of your designs which i have no doubt will be great
Tbh.. Nothing design isn't all about dots. They have 3 main fonts. Ndot that is used on headlights etc, Ntype that is used on that calendar widget and the last one is LetteraMono. If it was all about dots, it would be very confusing and distracting in the end. Also the implementation of Nothing elements is slow, because it's still a very small team of developers and to be honest quantity < quality is always better.
@@MrEelement well we aren't talking about designers here, are you able to use the designs juxtopposed made? exactly the nothing team probably do have designs ready, but it is really hard to implement that functionality in a device as a developer. It takes time and that's probably a good thing

The monochromatic icons are meant to keep you from mindlessly jumping between apps and wasting time on your phone. Nothing, from what I remember, purposely wanted to make it a bit harder to just tap on apps without thinking, so you’re more intentional about what you’re doing and how you spend time on your phone

I've owned a nothing phone 1 since launch basically and I'm happy someone finally points out these inconsistencies. About the icons though I don't agree. I believe they are fine right now. One of their goals with the UI is to help people with phone addiction. That's why the icons break those known human rules from the studies you mentioned to make people have a harder time finding an app and losing themselves into it unless the user creates muscle memory of where it is on the home screen. The same reasoning is used behind the glyphs which are also meant to stop people from looking at their notifications too much and getting lost in them. Sadly it's pretty limited and mostly still just a gimmick. An added benefit of their icon pack is that they created an automatic converter for all apps, even the non supported ones. (to activate it you need to install their icon pack from the actual play store and then reapply it in the settings)
I like so much this "new" variety in your channel, i think i could listen to you in a podcast talking abuot design for hours (im not even a designer as you cas see in my pfp, only a devops engenier)

Much like you I was intrigued by the OnePlus creators new creation, the Nothing phone, but the online reviews talked me out of it so I went with a much cheaper but surprisingly good Poco phone. It's got its fair share of bloatware but that can all be taken care of and now I have a very good phone.
these redesigns are awesome! as a nothing user, i struggle to think of a complaint ive had that wasnt touched on, plus so much more improved about the OS
This redesign is really good, I really hope Nothing takes a look at this when looking into Nothing OS 3. But I have a few things to note 1. As others have said, the motto of the monochrome icons is to usually halt distractions instead of making stuff more readable, and more clickable as a result. 2. Interestingly, the phone(2a) does use the glyph countdown timer for the camera app. Weird how the phone(2) doesn't do that 3. I guess some people would like a more stock experience with the apps and everything (with a bit of a unique design ig) though I'm all for options. I guess it would be nicer if these additional Nothing apps like the gallery app are separate apps that can be installed by the user if needed (like their Composer app) 4. I personally don't like putting the dot matrix font everywhere, I still do agree that the widgets use wayy too many fonts and feel pretty inconsistent as a result 5. I also think it would be great to add more lockscreen customisation aside from the widgets (something like OneUI maybe where you can move the clock and everything). This and the quick settings stuff are my biggest pain points of Nothing OS
When the nothong phone 1 came out i immediately bought one. i really loved the vision and design of nothing. but like you said i thought there were too many shortcomings and not everything was as smooth and good as i had thought beforehand. i am really a big fan of nothing, but i think i will wait a few years before i get the new nothing phone again and expect that they will have solved all the teething problems and improved the design. PS: the nothing ears are definitely recommended best earphones i have ever had and certainly for that price

Great quick review with emphasis on UI design, I support this type of constructive criticism along with suggestions and some hard truths about the device, I hope all of these are heard by the maker in hopes of a much improved version of it. great video
Some points in the video are quite valid, but it's still an overall 👎 for me. Here are my thoughts: Positives: 1. The control panel suggestions she made were quite valid tbh. 2. Icons in the settings could be dot themed 3. Navigation bar icons could be dot themed, but not the ones she suggested 💀 4. Hopefully, the Google apps that we are currently reliant on will be replaced by official Nothing apps in the future. 5. Progress bar for camera countdown timer 😘 Negatives: 1. No color picker for icons. Else, people will make some illegible home screens! 2. She could've done a better job researching the purpose of monochrome icons, rather than roasting them 3. Widgets are good as they are, except, ALL icons should be dotted and ALL fonts should be the Nothing's serif. All of them. 4. What? Does she want one control for each glyph light? That would make it too complex for the user. The existing thing is just fine. 5. No colorful glyphs 🔪 Only WHITE! 6. The repair thing. If you want one, you sacrifice the other. Nothing had to pierce into the competitive market with something unique, and they did just that. (Still a point worth a discussion.) 7. Yeah, those back elements are not functional. Noone has hidden that fact.
If you love pixel phones or stock android phones and need a new phone, best time to get this phone. Yes the control panel is a mess but i dont really care about that. it should be near stock android and not an shit abomination of oneui or worst colouros. 2nd point pretty valid the back buttons are coded as dots. the home button should be a line ofc. phone apps can be replaced from google. they have made a gallery app. the progress bar works in nothing phone 2a while taking photos. Also in India, we use zomato/uber eats to get our food delivered and those progress works flawlessly.

I definitely agree with the WiFi and Bluetooth toggles in the quick settings being too large and the quick settings not efficiently using space in general, but imo the majority of points in this video are nitpicks. I completely agree to this. Monochrome icons and overall "basic customisation" theme going on at the Nothing OS has made me use my phone less. Glyph Interface also has been beneficial. I have been using my new Phone (2a) for just a week now and it made me use the phone less. I put it face-down as it needs to be and it worked. I am actually surprised! And their Music Player widget, well, it's so basic that I love to use that when I'm driving a car (without any infotainment; only a 3rd party Bluetooth addon) which makes me look at the phones screen less. I love it so far, each and every detail of this phone. I agree on the dot-matrix theming (in the settings app for instance) and the Quick Settings part with Juxtopposed, though.
It is good thing for mindless scrolling but at the same time if you give your phone to ur parents then they wont understand which is which, but if there was an option then it would have been good
@@AQU1L_ I see your point, some sort of switch in the quick settings might come handy. But personally, I would not hand my phone to anyone without supervision.
This is DEFINITELY what I would say if I were a scumbag CEO trying to justify this lack of design consistency.
As someone who bought Nothing mainly for AOSP out of the box, your redesigns actually looks so nice , without losing AOSP identity
I am not a designer but I love your videos.
I can’t even imagine the planning and effort you must have put into every one of these videos. Sometimes, the elements in just one frame that lasts for 2 seconds are so elaborate.
Really appreciate you for making quality content and making TH-cam better.

I bought the Nothing Phone (2) for the same reasons, and this video perfectly encapsulates many of my issues with design and software!!
I was just watching this video and thought, 'Wouldn’t it be amazing if Carl Pei watched and reacted to it?' And he actually did today! 🤯 Can't believe it happened
simply amazing............... I always thought of this in every UI and OS but thanks to have a dedicated channel for this.

Wow, what a video, I really liked it a lot. It was more informative for me than a normal smartphone review, because you mentioned so many details of the software and how you used it. Normal smartphone reviewers don't do in that detail in such great detail with a focus on design and user experience. I know now that I don't want a Nothing Phone because of the Software, because in my opinion the software is the most important thing on a smartphone. I would really like to see you assess other smartphone software like Pixel UI or One UI. ❤

Thank you for making this! I found it so weird how proud they are about aesthetics and design, yet their theming of Android is really weak, lackluster, and incomplete. I love your suggested changes and with any luck I hope they see this and take notes.

Additionally you might not have noticed that, on the home page "Quick Settings" round widget DOESN"T have the same circle radius compared to the rounded app icons. So when you put the apps and the rounded quick settings widgets together, you will not be able to unsee that asymetry.
randomly saw this video and damn best detailed os review I ever saw of a phone , very raw and very truthfull .

I'd love to see you review the nothing OS 3 theme in december
@@delamcode I mean, if you want an Android *phone* that'll sell nowadays, you *need* to have the Google Play Store.
@@delamcode I did say that it is only a requirement if you want to ship with the Google stuff. But if we are being very precise - you wouldn't be able to use a lot of modern apps on a Google-less Kindle or whatever, because applications themselves expect that you have Google Services installed. Without them, you won't have background notifications, apps won't be able to display maps (so taxi apps will be broken at least visually), and you won't be able to use purchased apps even if you manage to download them (because they verify the purchase through Google Play Store). Of course there are ways to install Google services and Play Store after you buy the phone, but they are against Google's ToS (not that it stops people).
@@delamcode my reply got "unwritten", so I guess I'll have to write it again, avoiding some possible keywords. Phones without Great apps (like Kindle) cannot properly run many apps, because the apps themselves expect your phone to have Great Services. In particular, you won't get background notifications, embedded maps (like in taxi apps), and purchased apps you manage to download off of Great Play S... (because they require it on phone, to verify the purchase). Installing the Great stuff onto a sold phone is also against the Great's Tomatoes of Sicily (read this as an abbreviation), even though it is doable.
@@delamcode you won't get many apps to run on a phone without G Services, because they are built to expect them. In particular, background notifications won't work, embedded maps (like in taxi apps) will be missing, which might break taxi apps altogether, or just display an empty canvas instead of a map (you never know), geolocation will be slow and imprecise (based solely on GPS), purchased apps, even if downloaded elsewhere, won't be able to verify the purchase, and so on... There are ways to installed the G stuff onto your system, but they are against G's ToS.

disagree on few things, like with the icon design with colors, the monochrome design is purposefully for digital well being, to reduce distraction, adding colors to it shift the direction for that.
I have to disagree on some things you said:
Isn't better to get benefits of both worlds, give a user decide if they want system apps (supposedly more robust) or third party apps.
Finally someone said it
I love how nothing stuff fits with bedtime mode
best way to control myself from even the smallest triggers
Well, I don't like using google apps for *everything*… especially because google photos keeps very aggressively pushing me to use their cloud service for my photos. I can understand that quite a few people prefer the google apps (and for some things I do too), but I think that just means people should be able to uninstall or install both manufacturer as well as google apps, depending on if they need them.
Always love your videos. Always very insightful. I am aspiring to be a UI designer and these things really help. Thank you.
Everything that was good with android settings from back in the 4.4 release (over 11 years ago!) seem to have degraded into... nothing... by now. The old control centre with customizable panels was amazing.
You are absolutely amazing! I wait for your videos eagerly. Keep up the great work!
Just a quick reminder, what you are referring to as stock Android is actually the Google Pixel “skin”. The real stock Android (Android Open Source Project / AOSP) is very bare bones, not really useable as an end user.
I’m not exactly sure, but I thought most of the UI was similar (outside of apps, as most are Google apps)?
@@delamcode the UI is similar, but Google has its own launcher, not just the apps.
@@delamcode well, at least for the first 4 minutes it's all about the system UI
@@delamcode The UI is pretty similar. That's because they pretty heavily oriented themselves on the pixel phones.

The tidbit about color coding apps is what makes using anything in the Google suite of apps so infuriating as they all use the same colors, with the sole exception of the Play Store and things like Sheets.
I get your points and absolutly agree with them but until that year they had a small software team, also for a startup it makes sense to focus on hardware before of software because the suppliers need security, and you need revenue or profit to pay software employees, but hopefully they will get better in future.
This is pure quality nice one jux
Nothing wants to reduce screen on time, so some theme options are made by choice. But Nothing OS needs more love. Good Video as always!
I like the serif font kept in there, personally.
the point was inconsistency and halfassing a style
@@R_Samnan i dont really find it inconsistent, but im not a designer so what do i know 🤷♂

You should've waited for NothingOS 3. It'll have massive UI design overhauls. A lot of improvements you mentioned are already officially confirmed.
Great (but flawed) video!
NothingOS definitely needs a giant upgrade (Like their thing is transparency, but we get none in NOS?!)
A thing I cannot stand behind is your design choice of dot matrix-ifying everything! 💀 I understand it's the first thing people see, but their (i gotta say pretty) serif font is a big part of their design too. If everything was dots I wouldn't be able to read anything. I gotta say I understand that the phone and message apps being the defaults is pretty understandable knowing how small their team is, but I can't get behind making fun of their "bloatware-free" promises while comparing them with Samsung (famous for their bloatware on some of their phones, xiaomi too) And yes, I also do feel like they have been acting a bit too mainstream-y lately with some of the choices they've made with CMF (by Nothing 💀💀)
Anyways, I love your vids, I truly loved my NP1 while I had it, and I think there could be another way to fix their UI choices, good video!
I haven't watched yet but this is a great video to make as Nothing actually listens to feedback and might implement some of your designs which i have no doubt will be great
Genuinely my favorite UX design channel on TH-cam.
Yet a single TH-camr did it better and more well thought out than a small design team?
@@MrEelement well we aren't talking about designers here, are you able to use the designs juxtopposed made? exactly the nothing team probably do have designs ready, but it is really hard to implement that functionality in a device as a developer. It takes time and that's probably a good thing
@@MrEelement Yes. Changing icons, sure, that's fairly simple to do, and they could change that fairly quickly. Changing layouts and how things work? That's frontend work, and at least from their videos it looks like they have about 5 people doing frontend lol.
She's absolutely right. If you think about.. So many creative people who could be actually be part of the NothingOS, but they don't listen to their clients. Maybe it is really difficult for them to create something instead of half creating something.

omg happy to hear that
One of the best end screens in any TH-cam video I've ever seen!
The monochromatic icons are meant to keep you from mindlessly jumping between apps and wasting time on your phone. Nothing, from what I remember, purposely wanted to make it a bit harder to just tap on apps without thinking, so you’re more intentional about what you’re doing and how you spend time on your phone
If you have a hard time finding the app and have to focus of a list of apps to do so. It defeats the purpose. Maybe an option to have selected apps colored will solve the problem
So.... make the phone intentionally difficult to use.... damn thats better 'innovation' than apple

The way you explain every quirk and ui shortcomings is mind-blowing... I have never thought about it like this on majority of your points... And now I can't unsee it... This is what constructive criticism should be... Great job...
Seriously I couldn't unsee it.
Much like you I was intrigued by the OnePlus creators new creation, the Nothing phone, but the online reviews talked me out of it so I went with a much cheaper but surprisingly good Poco phone. It's got its fair share of bloatware but that can all be taken care of and now I have a very good phone.
Carl Pei just reacted to this!
these redesigns are awesome! as a nothing user, i struggle to think of a complaint ive had that wasnt touched on, plus so much more improved about the OS
I've learned so much from your videos, and they're also entertaining. You're one of my favorite youtubers rn ❤
I really like the concept of quick setting and coloured icons
This redesign is really good, I really hope Nothing takes a look at this when looking into Nothing OS 3. But I have a few things to note
1. As others have said, the motto of the monochrome icons is to usually halt distractions instead of making stuff more readable, and more clickable as a result.
2. Interestingly, the phone(2a) does use the glyph countdown timer for the camera app. Weird how the phone(2) doesn't do that
3. I guess some people would like a more stock experience with the apps and everything (with a bit of a unique design ig) though I'm all for options. I guess it would be nicer if these additional Nothing apps like the gallery app are separate apps that can be installed by the user if needed (like their Composer app)
4. I personally don't like putting the dot matrix font everywhere, I still do agree that the widgets use wayy too many fonts and feel pretty inconsistent as a result
Next time I build a UI, I'm going to channel my inner Juxtopposed
I own a Nothing Phone 1 basically since the release date. And yeah. The things You did are things I was complaining about even back then. Good work with the redesign.

Great quick review with emphasis on UI design, I support this type of constructive criticism along with suggestions and some hard truths about the device, I hope all of these are heard by the maker in hopes of a much improved version of it. great video
Carl Pei reacted to this
I love how you mocked up examples which actually look amazing and fit hahaha
Some points in the video are quite valid, but it's still an overall 👎 for me. Here are my thoughts:
Positives:
1. The control panel suggestions she made were quite valid tbh.
2. Icons in the settings could be dot themed
3. Navigation bar icons could be dot themed, but not the ones she suggested 💀
4. Hopefully, the Google apps that we are currently reliant on will be replaced by official Nothing apps in the future.
5. Progress bar for camera countdown timer 😘
Negatives:
1. No color picker for icons. Else, people will make some illegible home screens!
2. She could've done a better job researching the purpose of monochrome icons, rather than roasting them
(Still a point worth a discussion.)
2nd point pretty valid
the back buttons are coded as dots. the home button should be a line ofc.
phone apps can be replaced from google. they have made a gallery app.
the progress bar works in nothing phone 2a while taking photos. Also in India, we use zomato/uber eats to get our food delivered and those progress works flawlessly.

As a nothing phone (2) user myself, i feel like most of these issues are quite niche. Although i do completely agree on the native apps part with you. Great video as always, love your content!
I definitely agree with the WiFi and Bluetooth toggles in the quick settings being too large and the quick settings not efficiently using space in general, but imo the majority of points in this video are nitpicks. I've used a Nothing Phone 1 and none of these things affect the UX, really. NothingOS is pretty clean, responsive and fast to use and I think that's all that matters to most people looking for a new phone
@@someusername1872 But you're also paying 550€ (at least thats the price for me in Germany) which is enough money that I expect these obvious problems to not exist
