Nothing is back with another fashion focused phone. With crazy light show notifications, improved gaming and camera performance, and an increased flaghship-like pricetag, will Bell be impressed by Carl Pei's latest device, or should you stick with a more established brand?

Oddly enough, software support is becoming more and more important to me compared to hardware features in what phone I go with.
For the last few years, a top of the line phone had hardware that would be sufficient for like 10+ years, so that isn't very odd.
This will probably become more and more of a focus for people because of the performance that even (some) cheap phones have. Sure there's overhead in software and if you want to play games with nice framerates and still have battery life left afterwards you need both good specs and a large battery. But the industry is starting to be saturated to such an extent these days with devices of similar specs and looks that it is no wonder that people are starting to look to software for their particular tastes. And not just big things like is it stock or custom android or iOS but like Marques said about the Asus phone's customizability, it's the little things in customizing the experience to your liking that define the product experience for people.
Exactly whybim upgrading my S9+ other than buggy issues and the battery. Feel like I would've kept it longer though if it got 4 years of updates rather than just 2.
That's honestly a reassuring statement, from the other replies people are coming to terms that hardware is kinda slowing down or at least reaching a point where mid to maybe low-end devices are more than optimal, especially for users that don't need a powerhouse of a phone, laptop, etc. It's reassuring because I have to worry less about whether the phone will be of acceptable quality and focus on the software, which gives an idea of the maker. If the software has been given thought into its development then shows me what kind of support I may get, and the type of innovation my money is going to.
That's not odd. That just means you're an informed consumer. Top 1%, I'd guess.
Would love to see a section on repairability on phone reviews going forwards. Even if it's just "there isn't any". Would send a message to manufacturers that it's something that consumers want, and it's important to me for the longevity of the phone
Great idea! How easy is it to replace the battery should be the biggest point.
no point when its bricked in 4 years
@@joepapi619 ability to flash ROMs could be added as part of the repairability section
Absolutely
Is it something consumers want? Or something a small but vocal minority want? Just asking.
I love my Nothing Phone 1, and the updates that have been coming out have improved on it. It was a bit harder to get here in the states, but was worth it. It was a massive upgrade from my old G5.
Yeah same. I've had my 1 for a bit over a year, and it is still going strong. Cosndering getting a 2 just because I like the brand, not because the phone needs replacing.
@@erufenrito66 I got my Nothing Phone (1) a couple of months before (2) came out. I will probably hold out for the next generation, but I do wish I held out getting the Nothing Phone (1) as I didn't know that (2) would be released when it did.

I have had the iPhone 14 pro for 8 months and absolutely love it, Don't understand why people would use android phones really

Phone 1 improved over time with updates even the camera improved a lot
@@apostolos8734
Which is great news because it means the nothing 2 will also hopefully get great improvements to it's cameras.
Honestly the support for this thing is what makes me the most happy.
this is the same design aesthetic as what the oneplusX was trying to carve out, I loved that phone. if they made a nothing phone mini I would pick it up in a heartbeat.
Super duper happy to see ShortCircuit unboxing the 2nd Nothing Phone after seeing its announcement on TechLinked. My Note 10 Lite is still a reliable trusty ol thing but I wouldn't mind upgrading and LTT is exactly the type of perspective I need to help me decide. Also finally ordered a Northern Lights desk pad after drooling over the amazing design for more than a year, thanks Lime day!
Nothing Phone 1 = a good mid-ranger
Nothing Phone 2 = a good near-flagship
The Nothing Phone 2 kinda sits between the Pixel 7 and S23. In my area , the Pixel 7 is $700, S23 is $800 while Nothing Phone 2 is $600, count in the much faster processor and LTPO screen...you know which one I'm gonna get, got more hooked with the software though, I'm gonna cover the glyph with a case lmao.
You can get cases with specific clear sections for the glyphs! So you can have a coloured case and the lights (Source: I just bought this phone for a friend, they ended up getting a clear case though as they're going to make into an aperture science phone)
No one:
My inbox: NOTHING PHONE 2
Little surprised to hear that you didn't like the phone 1. I got it about a month ago and am really happy with it. I don't game or do anything particularly intense on my phone, so the performance is more than enough for me. Favourite thing though, is the OS. Stock android experience with a few widgets and graphical changes from Nothing. I love the complete lack of bloatware and the continued software support. A couple of updates before I bought it also massively increased the battery life, so with my usual usage, I go about 2 days without charging it. The glyphs are a bit of a gimmick to me, but I expect to use them a bit more once OS 2 is released for the phone 1.
feel the same, glyphs are a gimmick but idk it's just cool af, and people come up to me all the time just asking me about my phone lmao, sometimes form over function is okay imo
Agreed. There were a few bugs when I got it, but since then it's been running smoothly. It doesn't have the performance of a flagship, but for day-to-day tasks it's only slightly noticeable. Cell service is good on T-Mobile as well.
It's been a good buy for the $300 I paid for the USA "beta" program
exactly, I got mine for $315 because of bank offers for the 12gb in white version, super happy with how it turned out, was using a pixel 6a before, this seemed like a wayy better device
@@LevenZ69 oh cool, that's a really good deal. I got the 8gb version for about the same price. Afaik, the only benefit of the Pixel 6a over the Phone 1 is its camera, but I find the camera more than usable.
@@enderduck4253 I actually love using pro mode and found the lack of it in the pixel 6a, I found nothing phone 1 to be a no brainer and went for it lol
seems a great phone at good price, nice to see options in the phone space.
No phone missing a sd slot is a great phone
@@creaturecore13 agreed, the option of local storage is the best option. But this seems to becoming more rare by design or function of cloud storage. we could argue the merits of both but convenience seems to win in the consumer space. An unfortunate truth, but your comment has truth and merit.
so as someone that's created his own ring tones... and alert messages... that sound amazing to be able to do that!!!.
I have a nothing phone 1 and it is great. Much better experience that my last samsung phone that had to be returned 2 times for hardware issues that even after I got it back from repair never really went away.
All in all, love it.
ok but that Something laptop skin looks gorgeous, amazing work Dbrand
This seems very cool I have to admit that it is a considerable bump from $399 to $599 (to start) but you definitely get what you pay for and nothing seems to be very good on the support side of things. All in all I definitely do feel compelled to at least check it out.
dolphin as a labs workload is very fun to see - i wonder if they will end up trying any later release titles like sonic colors
Nothing needs to mirrior the glyph functions to the always on display based on the sensor that can tell if the phone is up to your head.
If the sensor detects the phone is face down then dont add the glyph to the display, if it doesn't then mirror the glyphs to display. That would solve not being able to see them
"One Hert" 😂
Honest question: Why would availability, if you already have the phone, be a detriment to the ownership/use experience?
It’s a neat concept but I can honestly barely remember what the back of my case looks like bc I always set my phone down face up so when I get a notification I can see what it is. I just don’t see the advantages here. Anything the back of the phone can do the front can also do but with more info and context. Maybe in not as exciting and interesting way but functionally, I just can’t see anything past the novelty of the glyphs.
And getting something bc it’s novel isn’t always a bad thing, of course. Like I’m still really considering picking one up.
Was hoping Linus would cover this like he covers many important phone launches
PS: It's 1 Hertz, not 1 Hert as people like to call it. It's named after the German physicist Heinrich Hertz, and thus the Z is part of the word.
My last phone (which I just upgraded less than a week ago) was the LG ThinQ G7 and it had a fingerprint reader on the back by the cameras. I really enjoyed that. I have the Samsung S23 Ultra now with the screen fingerprint reader and thus far I prefer the reader at the back. Then again, I used the G7 for like, four or five years. It's always been hard trying to find something to upgrade to because the specs on the G7 were really strong, and most even high-end phones I found were only slightly better spec-wise compared to the G7 (like it had the same memory but a bit more storage, or the processor was just barely more powerful than what I already had, etc). If I didn't already have the LG, I would have been very interested in this phone.
I so wish LG still made phones, I got used to the rear fingerprint sensor on the V30 and the phones I've had since then don't even hold a candle to its convenience
@@jdally9872 Yeah.. rear fingerprint sensor is so much nicer IMO than doing it midscreen. If nothing else, you know exactly where to put your finger to be scanned, whereas on the front screen there's no indication until you hit the power button first.
This is the calmest angriest man I've ever heard! 🤣 "I RETURNED IT AFTER SOME DAYS".
Loved the hosting.
One thing to note however, you made a mistake on AOD. Always on Display is the feature where your screen is OFF and you can see information. If you have to tap to turn it on to see it, is not AOD. It's just widgets on a lockscreen.
If what you showed here, COULD be set as AOD elements then that is fantastic. But if not, it's just a waste. For example, I have a Galaxy A22 and my AOD setting is set to "only show notifications". So if there are notifications, AOD will be active, but if not it won't.
I got the debrand tough case with a Teardown skin, and the rubbery outer layer of the case has started peeling off :(
I'm still happy with what I have for another year or 2 but I've seen things about both versions of this phone and I hope theirs a new one when I do revamp
I was actually interested in the first one as cheaper alternative vs flagships, but retail price in my country vs ordering on their website was way more, so bad. So even on top of that the chip in that range was meh really vs other options and also lack of software support.
This one overall a decent improvement, obviously higher price. Still, I expect them to offer longer OS support, it's still lacking especially as a company to differentiate in more enthusiast crowd, the more gimmicky side I don't care.
Keep having Bell do these videos, product reviews starting to hit products we care about.
Esim seems like a great idea but I wasn't able to find a way to activate a new phone on t-mobile with it. Had to go in store to do it
I always put my phone face down. I have it in a case and the lip does a good job keeping it in place when it starts vibrating. It also reduces my urge to look at it. 🤷♂️
16:20 fun fact as a phone 1 user
the glyph lights help get the attention of kids to look at the phone
Hey guys, 1 second is actually 1000 milliseconds, not 100 milliseconds 😂
11:14 three and a half seconds? That says 367 ms which is 0.367s. Those aren't cs. I'd be concerned if it takes a phone 3.5 seconds to open a browser nowadays
I'm still using my S9+. I am not upgrading any time soon. I still use my S8 too, but as an emergency phone. Best of all, I got it used in mint condition, for about $160 a few years ago. The S9+ seems to do it all.
What 12gb of ram!? Wow!
I'm very interested but I think I can wait for it get discounted. Like my beloved Essential PH-1 or Razer Phone.
What is the streets test time unit? Hours or minutes 😬
What's that Nothing Crazy app he mentions at 6:30?

the faded colours were already a huge problem for me on the op6t.. :(
i am about to upgrade after 5 years and really hoped that the nothing phone would be better.
i really wanted the Phone 1 but couldnt get it in NA. Now that my galaxy A71 has shit the bed im looking to upgrade. This may just be the one for me.
I put my phone face down all the time, but I also use opaque cases on my phones so the glyphs are kinda pointless from the outset.
Glyphs are definitely a gimmick. It just makes the phone look different/cool.
I have a nothing phone 1 there's some bugs but what phone doesn't, the glyphs are a gimmick but nice to have only wish they allowed you to customise the lights like the nothing phone 2. All in all I like the phone nothing bad to say about it plus it's cheap but feels expensive.
We probably will get more customisation with the glyphs soon. Nothing OS 2 is coming to the phone 1 towards the end of August.
@@enderduck4253 I hope so didn't want to have to put a custom ROM on as I like nothing os.
@@MrCharlieCupcakes os 2 coming to the phone 1 is already confirmed. I don't think software support will be a problem for at least a few more years, by which time I'll probably upgrade.
for battery life tests, you should use nits and not brightness % because people will use the same nits but not same % and different phones have different brightness
nothing can be better than this
I always keep my phone screen down?
I think you were too rough on the Nothing Phone 1. As someone that has daily driven the original since launch, it's a perfectly balanced phone for someone that doesn't play games
Fr idk why he was complaining about middling performance for a 400 dollar phone
Wouldn't it be better to compare the battery-life on a given brightness? Like all screens should be at least 300 nits and not only 50% of the max-brightness. It would make a better comparison
Day 10 with my NP2, the speaker is horrendous. It cracks at even 50-60%. Nothing took away STEREO sound as well after the latest update due to inconsistent audio across different apps.
Try restarting it. I had some absolutely horrible audio issues when I first got mine. Terrible bass response and stereo separation. I restarted it as a last ditch effort and now it sounds great imo.

Very cool phone but … 600USD = about 790 Canadian pucks. Base model here starts at 929 cdn pucks. So for Canadian customers it might be a harder sell.
I'm surprised they didn't mention this. I was looking into this phone but for 1000 dollars it's a hard sell. A pixel 7a is like half the price and you can find used ones for a bit cheaper as well. I don't know what conversion they are using but it doesn't make sense
The nothing phone 2 isn’t budget anymore so those of you who want to show off and have great performance can actually help improve the market by backing nothing too now (pun intended)
Nothing is going to go the exact same way OnePlus went
I know it isn't Nothing exclusive, but Dbrand needs to incorporate the phrase "something for nothing" for those skins in some way.
If I can flash something like caylxos or grapheneos and them relock the boot loader. I might switch. Anyone know?
Graphene is pixel-only. Not sure about calyxos
@@arantes6 well they both are officially pixel only but its all open source. I'd be willing to compile grapheneos if I had to

I don't get the hate for nothing 1. Everyone seems disappointed with it.
I'm on like month 8 of mine and I'm very happy. I used to buy the flagship phones but I really don't get why after my time with nothing (1).
It's fast, I don't play games on it tho, other than streaming gamepass. the battery still holds 1-2 days.
The camera isn't the best but, it costs like half of a current Samsung galaxy or iPhone so I guess I get what I pay for.

I, too dislike e-sims. I'm still not a fan of on screen fingerprint readers. I prefer the ones on the back. I'm still rockin my Pixel 5a. I'm not real happy with it, but I'm not real happy with the cost of new phones either.
$1000 Canadian Dollars. Not swayed. Too many slightly used flagship phones for a lot less money. In Canada, this price competes directly with arguably better phones. If carriers offered it at discount, I can see it selling, but definitely less sales at full price.
If they made a smaller phone I'd definitely give them a shot
yeah i have the nothing phone 1 and had a oneplus 6t before it and my only gripe with the phone 1 is its breadth. if it was maybe 5-6 mm shorter on that side id have zero issues; it'd be perfect for one handed use atleast for me. the hard flat edges of the phone are something ive gotten used to but glad theyve gone with a rounded smooth shape for the 2.
I got the Zenfone 10 due to the size and decent battery plus the UI which works well for me as I was a fan of OxygenOS before it got ColorOSed. The Nothing 2 looks decent though with performance and battery life and some funk on the UI that I could probably grow to love. There's also less compromise in the camera setup vs. the Zenfone 10, but it's the size I'm really enjoying on the Zenfone.
Ironically I thought it would be my massive consumption of TH-cam I would miss my OnePlus 7T Pro for because that had a larger screen with no punch-hole or notch, but the Zenfone isn't as compromised in that regard as I was concerned about.
I barely notice the punch-hole, even with the ridiculous shiny ring in it, and the size hasn't impacted my viewing enjoyment in any major way (in fact, the lack of brightness vs. modern flagships is probably more of a concern, but I live in the UK and even though it's in the middle of summer, it's grey out!).
What has impacted me the most about the size of the Zenfone is having to relearn muscle memory I've built since 2019 on the OnePlus, to start typing one handed again more, and adjust to where the keys are on this smaller device. I could increase my keyboard size more but then it eats into the rest of the screen's real estate, so I'd rather relearn. I think it will be worth it.
The only other thing I would say is that the OnePlus 7T Pro's display was bonded at the midframe, so had almost silent taps. The Zenfone is noisier and not enough reviewers talk about this. It's not quite as egregious as the Pixel range which sounds ridiculously hollow and loud when tapping, but more manufacturers should focus on this one thing because the loud, hollow taps do make it feel less premium in my opinion. And if you're typing in bed when your light-sleeping partner is trying to get some shut-eye, that silent tap is a boon.
Do you tap the screen with your nails 😂
@@spike5499 no but it really is noticeable on the Pixel even tapping with thumb flesh lol. The Zenfone is nowhere near as bad, but the Oneplus 7T Pro was glorious.
@@TheChiraagG that's interesting, I upgraded from the s9 to the s20 and I never noticed tapping sounds on either of those phones. But as I'm using my s20 rn it's completely silent unless my nail hits the screen. Although I think I remember quiet tapping sounds on my s9. Anyways what youtubers mention tapping sounds because I'd love to watch reviews with that level of detail lol

No one is going to buy this in Canada at the price of $929 when there are so many better phones from reputable brands for less.
While the Phone 2 looks rly kool... I think i'l stick with my Phone 1 for a while longer.
I think the price jump is too high , in matter of memory size prices is terriffying, it was 50 dollars and now is 150
11:18 "with three and a half seconds" sorry... the chart shows, thankfully, only 1/10th of the time.... 3 seconds would be brutal in today's age.
