- In this video, I use the leather steering wheel repair kit from Scratch Doctor/Leather Clinic to restore our steering wheel back to its original condition after 100,000 miles of use. This was the grey kit, but they offer other colours to suit all vehicle steering wheels. Our vehicle in the video is a 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Electric that has done 100,000 miles. The leather steering wheel hadn't worn, but rather stained by oils, sweat and dirt from hands. These vehicles have a heated steering wheel which I think only makes them more susceptible to this staining.
At the time of publishing this video, the kit is currently not on sale on Amazon, but available directly from Scratch Doctor here thescratchdoctor.co.uk/produc...

Thank you so much for making this video, I bought an identical kit and watched a couple of videos including yours before I started. I appreciate I had the benefit of your experience and others before I started but now with some experience I feel I can offer some tips.
Firstly, in my opinion you didn’t do nearly enough prep, and that was made very difficult by trying to work with the steering wheel on the car. I took mine off the car and I’d recommend this. I did a lot of prep and then when I used the leather degreaser I did actually get a few areas go brown, so I repeated this after leaving it for well over 30 mins each time, and a vacuum with a brush attachment was really good. Then I cleaned and lightly sanded and cleaned again. Next, I feel you maybe didn’t give enough time between coats of colour, I waited 30 mins and used a hair dryer between coats of colour and did 5 or 6 coats, then with the sealer again I was very careful to ensure drying and absolutely no colour came off when I did the sealer. I did accidentally start the sealer without the gloves and that was a big mistake.
My steering wheel was black and I accept that’s easier and perhaps also I was really aiming for very very high quality finish so I put in a lot of time and effort, but my results are perfect. So to say again, removing the wheel, taking extra time and care with prep, and leaving well to thoroughly dry between coats with help from a hair dryer seem to really pay.
Thanks again, your video is really good and I’m not at all being critical of your work, it’s just that more time does yeald better results.
This is extremely impressive Matt! Very good quick win prior to a private sale of a vehicle to make it really pop and show that it was well cared for.
Another great real world video, things don't always go right first time, with paintwork & leather refinishing if something goes wrong walk away an view it the next day. I once painted a Citroen GSA in bright yellow synthetic finish, when I had finished there were hundreds of paint runs, I went home, next day the paint finish was flawless, I just had to trim off the paint stalactites from the bottom of the sills 😂
Great job Matt, when applying the finish with a spinge I would dab it more slowly to stop the small bubbles forming, when I used to reconnolise E-type leather seats back in the day I found slower dabbing gave a better finish.
Just so you know...I'm really looking forward to this one Matt but things are happening and I need to make time to watch it.
I love the longer videos and I'm not usually this "busy"!👍
Ok, as promised I'm back, paused again...two or three cotton wool balls should have been soaked in prep solution then you wrap the green scourer around them and use the scourer. The purpose is to get an even delivery of solution from the cotton wool on to the pad. Off I go again...😅
And its tomorrow and i finally got to finish it! Good job, glad it worked out so well. I do enjoy a restoration video.😁👍👏
Great video, … (you are brave very use your wife’s car as the guinea pig ) ! I guess all steering wheels will eventually need this kind of TLC
I think so, particularly if they're heated.
Regarding the prep stage, my guess is that you should add the solution to the cotton wool ball, then fold it so the ball is on the inside, and you rub with the abrasive pad. The point of the cotton wool is to hold the solution and release it as you use the pad. Those green pads aren't absorbent so wouldn't hold the solution.
Yes, you're probably right. But I'm sure a better product could have been used for this. Like a small scouring sponge.
Agree that removes the dirt but I would have used the degreaser over the whole wheel as well - dirt and grease being different things.
@@GoGreenAutosthat’s exactly what I did and to be fair it worked surprisingly well.
Useful review
Hi Mate, my scratch is in middle across the badge and upholstery , how can i repair it
A good video if you don't know what's available to make thing look new
Have you come across a product thats similar but for the light grey matt plastic trim ie the door card and the front edge of the glove box
Thank you for posting more videos on the ioniq's
No I haven't, but I suspect the same product will work fine on plastics too.
Hi Matt. Thanks for this video. About to do the seats of me old Jaaag. I'm curious how has your fix lasted since you did it?
We've since sold the car, so don't have a long term view, but I can't see why it wouldn't last.
Hi Matt, thanks for making and sharing this. My Zoe steering leather wheel is looking rather worse for wear, mostly because my son refuses to wash his hands at the end of his shift as a gardener, grrr.
The initial finish looks pretty impressive, but i wonder if you would consider giving us a quick update after a few months to show us if the new finish is durable. For only £25 I'm concerned that it might quickly degrade.
This vehicle was sold soon after this video. However, I've used similar kits before and they do last. You can also add more coats of the final sealant if you want it to last longer.
Does it work with a leather lookalike steering wheel which is not actually leather?
I can't see why not.
As far as i know the Ioniq's steering wheel isn't real leather anyway.
That's piss poor to be honest for a modern car should last a lot longer
