    I watched about 100 steering wheel restoration videos and this is, by far, #1!!!! Thank you so much!!

    Finally, found the video that teaches me how to restore my steering wheel without taking it apart! Thank you! One small suggestion to your "products I use" description is to add the grit numbers for the sand papers that you used. Much quicker to view the written list than to dig it out of the video again.

    Excellent
    I use a cheaper just as good alternative.
    1. sanding as above and cleaning
    2. dyeing with Dylon black shoe dye
    3. spray clear coat choose matt or gloss sanding with 1000 grit between 2 coats

    I’m an old guy too but I’ll tell you what, I have never in life seen anyone put sandpaper to leather. Amazing! My other SAAB is a jeep, and it’s leather steering wheel needs exactly this. My 2010 9-3 Aero only has 40,000 miles on it, so I’m only going to clean it really well and use the resolene.

    Great job, it looks awesome. Can you give an update on its durability? How is it looking now after 2+ years?

    Wouldnt the acrylic finish make the wheel slippery ?

    That looks really good.

    If the steering wheel does not show much ware do you need to use the sandpaper first?

    • @saabmagicman2588
      @saabmagicman2588  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but just one pass lightly then a good cleaning with isopropyl alcohol before the dye.

    Great Video 👍🏼 Do you happen to know if 80’s cars had that leather top coat on leather steering wheels?

    How about a tan steering wheel?

  • @donnievick3076
    @donnievick3076 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    After sanding and applying alcohol, the smooth leather seemed to stand up a bit. Is that normal? Thanks!

    • @travato1592
      @travato1592 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, if you were a bit over vigorous with the sanding. After you dye it and use several coats of Resolene it will smooth out esp if you lightly sand between coats.

    Looking good! Wondering
    if this works on my 9-5 2007 steering wheel as well...

  • @js6752
    @js6752 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why does it look much shinier than the rest?

    • @travato1592
      @travato1592 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The matte finish is a bit different than the rest of the wheel. After a little bit of use it will flatten out and match. Or you could lightly sand the whole wheel and coat with the resolene.

    Fantastic Video!!! I can buy the top coat...but apparently amazon cannot ship the dye to the communist state of CA. Any other suggestions for the black dye?

    • @kconatymd
      @kconatymd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      SEM Classic Coat Black (spray) or any black leather dye found in a hobby shop.

    Hmm, I bought the same ingredients, followed the same instructions and all I got was a dull looking wheel worse than before. Now it’s time to find a steering wheel restoration place.

    • @saabmagicman2588

      gently sand it down and use Fiebing's Resolene Acrylic to finish it off.

      @@saabmagicman2588 Ok I'll give it another shot. Can I use a brush or something to smooth out the bubbles?

    • @saabmagicman2588
      @saabmagicman2588  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnnyparker2128 are you getting bubbles in acrylic too coat? If so, sand down and re-coat. Pat gently with foam, or yes you can use brush. Bubbles indicate that you were a bit to vigorous with your application.
