  • 🌺 This Vintage Hawaiian Quilt Is Amazing! 🌺
In this episode of Lessons from an Old Quilt, we will take a look at this incredible antique Hawaiian two-color quilt. The hand appliqué and hand-quilting is inspiring! You'll want to make a Hawaiian quilt after seeing this beauty!
I have to admit that I didn’t know much about Hawaiian quilts prior to making this video and writing the blog post. Reading about these quilts and their history has been so rewarding. All of these old quilts teach me so much, and this one is no exception. Between the stunning appliqué, the two-colors, and the delicate hand-quilting, you can’t help but be inspired by this quilt.

Great episode. This quilt is wonderful. It’s only the second quilt I have ever seen where in my opinion the quilting enhances the quilt front and becomes a showcase on the back. I have never seen a backing pieced together that close to the bottom. I mostly see them 2/3 down. Thanks for sharing this one.

Being from Hawai'i, I was always fascinated with Hawaiian quilts and loved them. The fact that more often than not everything is hand sewn/quilted is amazing. Each design usually depicts a flower, fruit or tree and there are so many! Beautiful find!

Don't you wish the quilts you have found each had a label? So glad you are adding that info. This is such a lovely example of Hawaiian quilting. If you would like to read a nice novel with this style of quilting, check out "The Aloha Quilt" by Jennifer Chiaverini. Lots of great info about the traditions that go into Hawaiian quilting while telling a great story. Thanks, again, for great content, Kris!

Tied quilts are much easier to deconstruct than those tiny quilting stitches. I recently found a vintage quilt at the thrift store. It had a label that was marked $2 for a dog bed. Of course i snatched it up because it had some really unusual 1950s fabrics. The back was ugly...yes not only were the 5 inch squares more damaged but were mostly solid clashing colors. I decided to deconstruct and salvage the fabrics. The "batting" was so thin and looked like cheesecloth...never seen that before. You have really inspired me to look closely at these vintage quilts with greater appreciation. If they cant be repaired we can always salvage some of the incredible vintage fabrics. This one had several 5 inch squares that were purple, turquoise printed owls...so adorable.❤

Agree with your decision to add a label; it will add meaning to the quilt and honor the maker. I’ve been doing that for my mother’s quilts, both made and collected as well as my own. Bravo, Chris!
Also, my last quilt had a fussy pieced backing, but it was a little short for the long armer so I added extra fabric of the same designer and color but a different design. I’ve been determined to use up stash and didn’t regret for a moment the extra border to the top which caused me to run short on the backing fabric. Result? About an inch or so of the other backing fabric on the final bound quilt. Regrets? No! I am more than pleased with the final result. Extra fabric back from long armer became the binding. As you said this ‘variation’ adds personality to the quilt. ❤

I think so, too! I am not completely sure of the age. According to her nephew, he believes she made this one in the 1950s or 1960s, but he couldn't remember. It is tough to tell. Gingham was popular in the 1940s and is still popular today, so that doesn't help. She passed away a few years ago and she was 100 years old. She quilted until a few years before that, according to her family. I think it is older, however. I wish I knew before. ❤️

Oh my goodness--just lovely! My fav parts: excellent hand quilting (way outta my league), adorable gingham binding, and delicious soft blush backing. All wonderful. As for the pieced binding, perfectly fine, and even kind of special. When i see these little idiosyncrasies, iknow this is handmade by an individual maker, and very likely real vintage.
There are a lot of imported quilts for sale made to look just like real antique/ vintage quilts. And I have no problem with these imported repros, but I like my vintage quilts to be real old time travelers. So I LOVE details like pieced backings and other little idiosyncrasies.
Thank you, Kris, for sharing. May this darling old quilt stay with you for decades to come!

I love this series! The quilt is spectacular! I’m glad you have some information on the maker! I have found several quilts at garage sales, estate sales and antique stores and wish I knew more about their history! Will you make a label of sorts to add to the quilt or just write up the information and keep it with the quilt? I’m trying to decide if I should label the quilts I have collected with the place where it was purchased or maybe the town? I’m not sure??? Thank you for sharing!

I am going to label it with all the information, including her obituary. I love that I have the information.
In my opinion, any information you can give future generations will help. You just never know, right?

Love your videos about old quilts! This quilt is magnificent!! Pink is my favorite color. I loved reading more on the blog about it. Did you find the quilt in PA? You have such amazing luck finding wonderful quilts. I am so happy that you are going to repair and label the quilt. Synthrapol might be able to take out the bleeding of the quilt. Can't wait for more quilts from this talented lady's collection!!

Thank you so much for watching, for your kind words, and for the wonderful tip! ❤️ So happy you love the videos and the blog. The blog is a great way for me to keep track, too. I wish I would have embraced blogging sooner. ❤️
When I started this series three and a half years ago, it truly was Divine intervention. I was on a prayer walk, knew I was leaving teaching, and God put this endeavor on my heart, including the name Lessons from an Old Quilt. I had a small antique/vintage quilt collection (about 20 quilts) and questioned this as a series because I didn't think I had enough quilts. He told me He would provide and He certainly did! They keep coming and coming and coming! I have over 100 in my collection now and every time I leave the house I seem to find old quilts! God certainly has a sense of humor! 🤣 These quilts seem to find me, one way or another.
Sorry about the long reply. 🥰 Thank you again for sharing and watching/reading.

@@SewtheDistanceOne dy I went to the area Flea market It was overcast and damp I only had $8 in my pocket and had promised not to bring home any stray quilts ! I figured a book or hanky was a possibility! I'd been missing my quilting grandma and feeling sad Out of nowhere this thought popped in my mind "May the bluebird of happiness fly up your nose"! Giggling I wentvin and found a huge table loaded with books! Under the table a bunch of rugs and sheets As I strolled around the books I stubbed my toe on a pile of sheetsI bent to push them out of the way and saw that 30's blue! Pushing sheets off I saw blue binding and the back of a quilt ! I pulled it out and it was a handquilted bluebird quilt ! Similar to a Redbird quilt made of blocks It was a little dirty but not in bad shape! Some stitches were loose and the French knots used for eyes needed replacing with sturdier colonial knots I said a prayer and asked the lady in charge " How much for the blanket " She said "Just gimme a dollar "! 😮 I said You got a deal ! You have to agree He does have a sense of humor and I know He loves me ! ❤

Oh, I love this so much! What a wonderful testimony of the love (and humor!) He has for us. Thank you for sharing. ❤️🥰❤️
When I started this journey, I only had about 20 quilts in my collection. I remember questioning it and telling God that I don't have enough. He said, "I will provide" and that He does! Early on, when I would get down to my final one or two quilts to review, all of a sudden one would either be given to me or would pop up at a yard sale or thrift shop. Amazing! Then it got to the point that they kept coming and coming, which speaks to His humor. I have SO many quilts now (well over 100--I am afraid to actually count), and they still just keep coming. People ask me all the time where I find all of these wonderful quilts, and I tell them that they find me. God sends them, and I am forever grateful. Bonus: we will never be cold! LOL!

@SewtheDistance LOL! I have to stay away from Flea markets and antique shows ! I've enough to do at my age and need to evaluate my conservatorship of these treasures! Someone took a lot of time using scraps, making do , and making lovely usable works of art ! I need to find new custodians for these darlings! First I will take pictures and have a collection in an album Its time !

Hi Kris! Another beautiful quilt, that has great impact with that repeat block. Love it! Can I ask, what do you do with your quilts, or how are they stored as a collection? I've heard about cedar wood chests to deter pests - I've seen the V&A roll them up and store them in huge drawers, but what are your thoughts on storing vintage quilts. My apologies if this has been asked and answered before. Thank you! 😊

I don't mind answering these questions at all, although I am not sure if my answers will be very helpful, but we will see!
I started collecting old quilts about 25 years ago and found most of the ones back then at flea markets. Up until 2020, I "only" had about 20 in my collection. When I decided I wanted to make a TH-cam channel, I was praying about it and asked God what I should do. The idea of Lessons from an Old Quilt is completely Divinely inspired. I never would have came up with this on my own. God is so good. One of my early apprehensions was that I wouldn't have enough quilts, and that I would only be able to make 20 videos, but God has a wonderful sense of humor. I would question this and He would tell me He would provide. Wow, did He ever! I now have well over 100 old quilts in my collection and whenever I get low, more appear in my path, either at thrift shops, yard sales, auctions, or even friends just dropping them off. All the praise goes to the Good Lord on this one!
As for storing--I have them EVERYWHERE in my house--folded on bookshelves, under beds, on beds, in closest, on ladders--everywhere. 😆
I hope this helps answer some questions! Let me know if you are interested in more information. Happy to answer any questions you may have.

Great question! I write a little bit more about this in my blog, but I can give you the summary. I just don't know. 😀 Gingham became popular in the 1940s or so and is still popular today, so that doesn't help. Same with solids. My gut tells me it is from the 1960s, but honestly, I just don't know. Wish I could help more!

What color thread was used to seam the backing? Maybe the thread was pink...and the dye from the thread was what caused the bleeding?

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Oh, that's a great thought. It appears to be white thread, but it could have been pink originally. I wonder if that is it? Thank you for this idea! I love trying to figure this stuff out.

@@SewtheDistanceThe backing could have been home dyed At a later date someone used detergent and caused it to fade ? I've seen it occasionally snd I noticed the other fabrics were a better quality It doesn't look bad to me considering it's the back of the quilt If it was mine I'd leave it be No harm no foul ! 🎉

I love your videos, and your channel. But, IMO, there is nothing remotely inspired by Hawaiian quilting about this lovely vintage quilt, except it is two colors, that is all, and while there generally no Hawaiian quilt police, there are those current resident experts that might be able to help identify this. Send pics to Cissy at Poakalani, or even some others, like Pat Garlangton. Go to the library at Waimea where they house over 450 patterns and ask. It is always possible someone took serious creative license with the concept of traditional Hawaiian needle turn applique and made this quilt, but I would really love to hear the story...respectfully, I disagree with the identification of this one.

Thank you so much for the love and insight on this one. I really do appreciate it. ❤️
When I started writing the outline for this video, I originally called it a Hawaiian-Inspired quilt, but after doing extensive research, I realize this does, in fact, meet the criterion of a Hawaiian quilt design, at least from what I have learned. According to what I have read, there are five basic characteristics present in a Hawaiian quilt:
      1. Two contrasting fabrics (bright and light)
      2. One-piece appliqué motif
      3. A radially symmetrical appliqué design to the eighth (I think this fits, but I am terrible with math! 😀)
      4. Quilting: Echo Style
      5. Inspired by nature or something important in the maker's life
After doing this research and then finding a similar design called "Hawaiian Quilt Appliqué" in a few of my antique quilt resource books, I felt confident in calling it a Hawaiian quilt. That said, I could still be wrong and am in no way an expert in this field. I will definitely keep digging and educating myself on this. I appreciate the help in this endeavor. I would never want to offer bad or incorrect information. Please know I do my best of offer the most accurate information I can, and I would never want to give any misinformation or, worse yet, misrepresent another culture's heritage. ❤️
