  • Hawaiian Quilting is known for Needle Turn Applique, the process of tucking the raw edge of your cut out design under the basting stitch and sewing the design to the background fabric. We'll show the technique of sewing clean points, sewing in the valley and on curves. Once you learn this technique you're on the way in completing your 22" x 22" Hawaiian Quilt Top.

Thank you for such a clear explanation and demonstration of doing needle turn appliqué! I am doing a baby quilt for my first grandchild. It is my first quilt and has some flowers to appliqué. This is the first video I have found that shows needle turn appliqué. I wish I had watched it first. I wouldn’t have needed the freezer paper and heat n bond I bought because I watched other appliqué quilting videos. Now I am inspired to try making a Hawaiian quilt!

Mahalo, Auntie! Thanks to your wonderful instructions, I have been able to do needle turn appliqué for the first time. I have been a hand quilter for almost 20 years and this technique has eluded me. I just visited your beautiful home for the first time and am so fortunate to have found your videos on line. I am using your tulip pattern so will have lots of peaks and valleys to practice on. Just like Hawai’i!

Sissy, I have made about half a dozen wall hangings, pillows, etc. I have taken just as many Hawaiian classes. I have never been very comfortable with my points & valleys. I have watched your video three times now and I pick something up every time. Your instructions on points has helped me become very comfortable with them now. Thank you!!! Please keep making your videos. Your voice & demeanor are very calming. Aloha!

Thank you so much for this wonderful video! I've seen pieces like this and I was always so impressed but at the same time couldn't imagine how hard it must be to make one. Now I know that sure, it needs time, practice and effort, but it's not impossible to learn and the result is so beautiful! I want to try this technique soon, now that I know more about it. Thank you for your help, explanations and encouragement ❤️

Have you ever considered teaching zoom/live classes? You would reach a lot more people globally! Loved both these instruction videos! Am in the midst of quilting a patchwork bedcover but can’t wait to try this one next! I loved your interview with Karen and I have to say in Indian traditional sewing/embroidery and appliqué the story is hugely important. Especially because women traditionally make their own dowry clothes and bed clothes etc. Sewing their stories helps preserve them for future generations as well as serves as a reminder of their own history. Looking forward to more video tutorials! 💖 Big hugs and namaste!

Miss Cissy, I found you first when searching for this new activity and love your videos. I'm watching the needle turn applique now and was wondering if you ever use a contrasting color for the applique? Or is the traditional way to always use same color thread as the pattern?
