Gorillaz is a whole rabbit hole. They are a virtual band. But it's really a British musician from the group Blur & the comic book artist (Tank Girl) who are like the 'core' members. Each of the characters has a back story & the songs & the characters are intertwined.

It's a virtual band. Russel's back story is that he's the sole survivor of a drive by shooting, possessed by the ghosts of the victims who didn't survive as well as a number of demons. I think the character was conceived like this so a number of different features could be cycled through and still have continuity with the charachter
Not saying that this song is using the phrase in it's original meaning, but the phrase "Sunshine in a bag" comes from the Clint Eastwood film called "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." The character refers to a bag of gold he has as that.

gorillaz videos are telling a story, in order its like reading a comic book a lot of them make more sense when watched in order, some people dont bother with the story though just the music some love the story

The future coming on = we’re all gonna die, and you can’t do anything about it.
Ain’t happy, feeling glad = not satisfied with life, but finding temporary escape to cope.
Sunshine in a bag = the temporary thing that gets you through life. Weed, booze, sex, whatever.

Also, to your point, poetry, hip hop, and art are subjective and open to interpretation. That's the best part about art. Hip hop is full of double and multiple entendre's. It could easily be a reference to resident evil for sure, and if that is what it means to you, that's so cool! I had never thought about it that way!

It's not really a gimmick tho. All the videos in tell a story. It's a whole art project by a musician and a comic book artist with a bunch of guest artists.

I was a teenage boy when that song came out. I met her at the California State Fair in '78, and she signed a Picture for me... One of the few "Celebrities" that I've met in my life, I'll never forget it.
