I remember seeing Del the Funky Homosapien talk about this song in an interview. He had pretty much forgotten he did the verse, and he was just going to the corner store in his neighborhood in Oakland and people who knew him were shouting at him, telling him they liked his new song, congratulating him, and he had no idea what they were talking about. He finally figured out that his voice was all over the radio and he had the biggest hit of his life from a couple verses he did as an afterthought.

Gorillaz is a British virtual band created by Damon Albarn (vocals) and Jamie Hewlett (artist). It was formed in 1998 and they got signed to a record deal from their first song, Ghost Train (released the same year). Then in 2000 they released Tomorrow Comes Today which was a hit in Britain. After in 2001, they released the single Clint Eastwood that was on billboard charts, very successful so no surprise you’ve heard it (they even won a Grammy and were on MTV cribs). Clint Eastwood, along with Tomorrow comes today was later included in their debut album; Gorillaz. They’ve been making music since and I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve also heard Feel Good inc by gorillaz as well. Anyways I’ve rambled now *happy reading*
The guy rapping in this song is Del the Funky Homosapien. You should check out some of his songs.
Swaggy, I just watched a documentary about this song, on youtube, a few days ago. Basically the lead singer from blur, Damon Albam, wanted to try different music, he saw all these bands on MTV with no personality. blur was late 90's brit-pop. He knew Jamie Hewlett, the guy who created the Tank Girl comic. The rights to Tank Girl were sold to a movie studio; it became a movie starring Lori Petty in 1995. In '98 Hewlett took some money he got from the movie deal and got together with Albam and created the band; Hewlett took charge of the animation and Albam took control of the music. It was a good chance to try different music, a lot of styles. They span a lot of genres. They gave the members of the band backstories too. There are influences from George Romero zombie movies in the video. Del the Funky Homosapien did the rap as the spirit of Russel's friends. The first album came out in 2001.
Murdoc is the guy whose name was hidden by the ads. Check out Feel Good Inc, which was the next single. Other subscribers may know more about the band; I was a casual fan of the Gorillaz but it was a massive impact once they premiered.

Yeah, back in the “good old days” when MTV and VH1 actually played music videos. By this time though, you had to go to one of their extra channels (like VH1 classic) to actually see videos; the main channels weren’t playing them at all by the time this came out. ☹️
(I was coming of age in the 80s and 90s, graduated HS in ‘93.) I grew up on MTV (and then VH1), I remember always setting up the VCR to record 120 minutes on Sunday nights because I couldn’t stay awake that late on a school night. and I know a lot of you did too!
I really like their song "Stylo" and the video is cool too!

Bro, what's actually going on in this video is *NUTS!* You'd never be able to guess what it is otherwise. But to answer your question, Gorillaz came out in 2001, several years before TH-cam even existed. I was still in high school when they hit, and we were utterly spellbound by them. They were the most fascinating thing in music in those days. Not just the most in rock n roll or pop, but in ALL of music across the board altogether. We'd never seen anything like a cartoon band with a backstory as entertaining and bonkers as their's before.
Back then, all they had was a website where they'd post updates once every week or two that peeled back more layers of the story. We went to their website all the time because Gorillaz were wacky, cool, and absurd, but most importantly, they were interesting- *AND WE LOVED IT.*
Fair warning, what's actually going on in this video is just straight up bonkers. Alright, here we go...
The guy making the evil laugh in the very beginnings, Murdoc, is the leader of the band. He put the whole thing together. He's actually a lifelong criminal and weirdo with no talent whatsoever, but he sold his soul to the devil to become a famous rock star. Satan agreed to the deal, and he gave Murdoc his own personal bass guitar, named El Diablo, to play and use. It can help him write hit songs, and he can use it to control everyone else in the band too. Right before the video started, Murdoc was doing a black magic ritual in this graveyard, but he didn't finish it and close the portal all the way because he didn't count on one thing...
That would be Del, the blue ghost living inside the drummer, Russel. Russel was once a gangbanger in America, but him and his best friend Del got shot in a drive by shooting. Russel survived it but was put into a coma. Del didn't survive. He died in the shooting but he chose to live inside Russel's brain instead of going to the afterlife because he feared where he'd be going as a gangbanger.
The lead singer is an idiot named 2D. Murdoc ran over him with his car twice the first time he met him and it knocked both of his eyeballs out of his head. Because he lost his eyes, Murdoc renamed him "2 Dents" for having two dents in his face where his eyes should be. Over time, people shortened it "2D" instead of saying "2 Dents" all the time. When 2D stood up after getting ran over by Murdoc and losing both his eyeballs, Murdoc saw how grotesque and twisted this guy looked without eyeballs in his head, and he instantly realized, "This is the lead singer I've been looking for. He's so sick and repulsive that I have to make him the frontman of my band!"
(I told you it was nuts, didn't I?)
Everything was going according to plan in the video until Del, the rapping blue ghost living inside of Russel, came out. He stomped and cracked open the ground during his verse, which allowed one of the zombies in the cemetery to reach up and punch Murdoc in the nuts. This caused Murdoc to drop Satan's bass, El Diablo. Without Satan's guitar, he can't control the cemetery zombies anymore. That's when they all rise up out of the ground to attack him- when El Diablo isn't in his hands anymore.
Noodle surprises everyone when she's able to save the day by kicking the dancing zombie gorillas so hard it sends them flying back. Seeing this snaps Russel out of his trance, which puts the ghost of Del back into his head.
This sets off a long search effort by the band to learn how Noodle- a teenage girl -was able to do that. Even Noodle herself wants to know how she was able to do that. Come to find out, she was actually grown in a Japanese lab to be a Japanese super soldier. Her creator started developing a father's loving relationship for her after he created her, so he erased her memory and sent her to England for a fresh start so that she wouldn't die on a battlefield somewhere. So she shows up in England at the Gorillaz's studio as basically a young teenage girl version of Jason Bourne. She doesn't know her past, but she has all these badass superpowers and training that just comes over her at certain times when her adrenaline kicks in.
Which is where we end with this video. Murdoc regains possession of Satan's bass guitar to put the zombies away, Del is back inside of Russel, 2D is still under Murdoc's complete control, and Noodle is about to set off on a trip around the world to discover her lineage.
(Once more, I warned you it was totally bonkers ahead of time didn't I? )
But that's the story here. This was the very first song and music video Gorillaz ever released, and as teenagers we ate this shit up when it was still brand new and totally unprecedented. Gorillaz were Adult Swim 3 years before Adult Swim was even a thing! Hell, I'll do you one better- they were better than Adult Swim ever was because Gorillaz also had great music that was part of the package too.
Suffice to say, to a bunch of stoners, drunkards, skirt chasers, and hellraisers like us back in high school, we were in love with these guys! We couldn't wait for the next absurd, preposterous shoe to drop in the Gorillaz story to come out on their website every week or two. We lived for that shit back in those days as a bunch of teenage burnouts who started partying waaaaay too early in life! 😁😉
2-D didn't lose his eyes; he suffered an injury called an 8-ball fracture to each of them. The resulting condition is known as a hyphema. The blackness is caused by blood pooling between the cornea and the iris. It usually causes blindness, but not always, and 2-D was lucky. He was also so badly concussed that he signed the deal Murdoc offered him without taking the time (or being able, really) to think about it.

I was lucky enough to see these guys live a few years ago. I've loved them since I was a teenager, and the way they mixed the live performers with the animation was genius. Still one of the best concerts I've ever been to!
I just got to see them a couple weeks ago!! It was awesome. Almost studio quality for some songs, I kept closing my eyes I was so immersed and had to remind myself to be present lol

You might have heard Del the Funky Homosapien before. He’s a west coast guy, he’s Ice Cube’s cousin. Never had much radio play or big hits, aside from some minor successes in the early 90’s. He’s more of an underground legend for his later solo work and his stuff with the supergroups Hieroglyphics and Deltron 3030. He’s a really talented dude. Kind of a bummer that he had to do this Gorillaz song to get the recognition he deserved, but it is a great song, and better late than never. His contribution on this song helped to make Gorillaz a cultural phenomenon. It’s easy to imagine a history where he doesn’t have those iconic verses and then Gorillaz doesn’t blow up on radio and mtv and then they’re done after this one album.
TH-cam started in 2005. Google bought it in 2006. This song came out long before TH-cam existed.
