  • In this video, I go through the process of replacing the steel cable which allow you to change the vent which air flows through. In many Jeep Wrangler JKs, this cable forms a kink though normal wear and tear, which can prevent the driver from using the defrost or switching between vents altogether. The part number for this cable is 68004203AB.
The audio in this video is a little rough at times, so my apologies in advance. Please let me know if this video helped or if you would like to see anything else, thanks for watching!

That stiff operation is likely because the control slider (the white round disk behind the glove box) has become misaligned. It is likely the reason why the cable became bent. Take it off with the one screw in the middle of the disk and put it back on again. If you look at the backside on the white disk there are 3 channels that three 1/8" pins go into. On the front side of the disk there are arrows that show where the 3 pins should be aligned to when putting the disk back on. The 3rd pin is below the center of the disk and in front of it, towards the cabin side. Align things and put the disk back on. Check for smooth operation.

I went back and made sure the slider was aligned properly. It seems to be a little less stiff. Appreciate the tip!

Thank you for posting! We followed your steps and it worked perfectly.
A couple of things we experienced: there is a plastic panel below the cigarette lighters that first needs to be popped off to get to the bottom bolts.
We found that our white dial that the cable connects to (the end near the glove box) was stuck. This caused the kink in our cable originally.
We manually rotated the white dial to get it moving again. Now it works great with the new cable installed.

Where did you get a new cable? I got one, but haven't looked inside my Jeep yet, but my cable appears to be for the temperature, not the blend door. I just searched eBay and no one has it. I got my part, possibly the wrong one from a Mopar dealer in Missouri.

At the time they were available on eBay but after doing a quick search I am not finding any on there either, or nearly anywhere else. The one place I found just now is from Jegs, which I think is a reputable website, not for sure though. When I was searching I ran into the temp control cable a lot. Usually the correct cable says something like mode selector or in the case of Jegs it is Mopar Accessories CABLE MODE.

@@letsjeep4271 Yep, Jegs is a real place just like Summit Racing. I'll check that out.

@@letsjeep4271 I did save a search for that cable yesterday on eBay, but just tried Jegs but had to use your year. Mine's a 2007. But it's $15 to ship. I'll just wait.

@@letsjeep4271 I went to Crown Automotive's website. They only sell to dealers, so I searched through some of their online retailers and chose 4WheelParts. I don't know if I'll ever get it, but Crown shows still having that part number and showed a photo. The wrong one I have that's for the temperature may fit or may be too short since I haven't tried it, but it'd be nice to have the right one.

Good luck! Hoping you get your part sooner rather than later.

I got the part from Ebay. There are several different sellers, I just looked for a seller with the fastest delivery time, as some didn’t have any available or were delayed. You can search up the part number and find many options.
