This is an excellent short. It starts & seems to end in nearly the same place. Along the way, we learn about the main characters plight. In nearly the same way he does. Very very cool story line. Scripting was realistic with a solid cadence. The tech wasn’t too outlandish that it couldn’t be possible in the near future. The acting was excellent. (I feel like there is fine line when acting in an AI role - either super stiff and detached or going totally robot rouge without any mechanical inclination). The AI barkeep and AI wife/bar hostess found a very convincing medium. The captain played panic, confusion, discovery and finally defeated resignation to a ‘T’. Thanks for sharing!

The premise of Mark's memory wipe in this video reminds me of an old story:
A man opened his eyes & found himself alongside a forest path, sitting on a tree trunk that had long since fallen over. He didn't know where he came from, where he's was going, how far he'd gone already (but it must have been quite a distance because he was tired). Thinking about his situation further, he realized that he didn't even remember his name, his age, where he lived. Then he heard the scratchy-sounding voice of a woman, which startled him a bit..."So now, what is your third wish?"
When he first opened his eyes his head was bowed while he was thinking & trying to remember but now he raised his head to see a withered old crone standing nearby. Quickly taking in his situation, he asked the crone "What do you mean by my 'third wish?' How could it be my third wish if I hadn't used the first two?"
The crone replies, "After you got your first wish, you wished for everything to return to the state it was *before* your first wish. So that was your second wish & you don't remember either of them because even your memory was returned to the same state as it was. So now you only have one wish remaining."
This confused the man because he could scarcely believe what the crone was saying. After all, he didn't believe in magic or have any superstitions to speak of. But his curiosity was piqued & he decided to see if the crone really could fulfill a person's wishes. "Alright," he said, "I wish to know who I am & why I'm here."
"That's funny," the crone cackles just a moment before fulfilling his wish & disappearing forever..."That was your *first* wish."
    😱

He hated knowing that so much that his 2nd wish was to reverse the effects of the 1st wish, including giving him amnesia again. Since he'd forgotten what his 1st & 2nd wishes were, he repeated his 1st wish. Now he has no more wishes & can't reverse it any more.
Now he's suffering with the knowledge that caused him to wish for amnesia...

I felt a little impatient at first, because I'm not a fan of the genre, but then I actually got more interested. If he can't go into hypersleep, does that mean he's going to be physically and mentally 44 years older, if he's still alive when the ship reaches its destination? If they're only 44 years away from an inhabitable planet, they must have been in transit for at least a millennium. I'm not sure that's consistent with what we learn in the video.
I'm not sure you mean that the potential problem here is that his own sanity might turn on him. That suggests that he needs to be psychotic to survive.
I was tickled by the explanation of "AI." So it doesn't mean athletic ineptitude. :-)
I watched this with CC turned on. What's with the delay in showing the last word of so many sentences? It reminds me of long German sentences in which the verb comes at the end. Of course, I've already heard the word, so the delay in seeing it is unintentionally, I assume, ... amusing.
While it would be nice to know how this turns out, it already works as a short film. It looks like the 2,000 other passengers are going to awaken without their top leaders. Thanks for the video.

I really enjoyed it. An intriguing story that kept you watching. Very slick direction that was unobtrusive and calm which enhanced the sense of control by the AI's in contrast to the 'captains' state of confusion. The impressive lighting gave great depth. The lead was very good, underplaying something that would have been internally frightening gave it more power. Great work all round.

*Won't the same thing happen to the 50,000 passengers or at least enough of them to wreak havoc and cause mass murder?
*Even if everyone else is okay when they wake up, how are they supposed to help Mark?
*How is Mark being kept alive? I'm sure simulation wasn't designed to support someone for an extended period let alone 2 years.

Spoiler alert: So he thought he was committing suicide 535 different times with that gun? Not counting the first time he wiped his memory, or the last time when he overrode the system and knew it was just a memory wipe? Ouch! He only needs to commit suicide another 16,000 times (plus or minus a bit) over the next 44 years before reaching his destination. Yeah, no worries at all. What could go wrong?

So, in two years he has committed 'self-deletion' over 500 times. That is pretty close to daily.
I think a new solution is needed.
Who would want to live another 44 years like that?
Next obvious question, which he did not ask, "Are there any pods available which I can use, other than mine?" Perhaps there is a spare? Or another passenger which has passed on?
If nothing else, the AI should come up with another scenario which does not lead to self-deletion in less than 48 hours.

The "this is the first time" answer to the question about how many times he became aware of the sim indicates that he committed suicide using that gun over 500 times. Unless any form of suicide inside the sim leads to a memory wipe and reboot. In that case he still committed suicide, nearly every day. But not always with the gun.
Perhaps he sometimes even asked to be killed, instead of for a "challenge."

You look like a big man, Blake Ridder!!!! And I think the captain should've asked what the maximum speed of the vessel was!! For all he knew, the speed could've been set really low, either by the treacherous crew, or by the computer system itself, if it had some nefarious agenda!!!!!

what if we are living like this here on this earth - prison planet but it is not reincarnation it is reincarceration that we go through - while something invisible to us feeds on us like we are their herd of nutrition - and they feed our bad frequency - the times we are falling from grace - grace being the essence of our soul - which they don't have control but somehow got us in the stock yards. Each time we go through we do things different here and there - but on the flip side is all the NDE I have read or talked to - none said anything about living the exact same life over - perhaps it is all about which raindrop you are and what ocean you belong to.
