  • It’s 2618 and humans are extinct. Four aliens travel to Earth to visit the museum of humanity. There they find the story of the last heroes of humanity, setting out to find help.
Welcome to Earth is a short science fiction film filmed in the Netherlands. It was made with a large group of both professional and amateur filmmakers. To bring the world to life it was filmed on both unique locations and inside sets build specifically for this film. It contains designs in both props and costumes that are specifically created for this film.
Help us translate the film! Many viewers have expressed they'd enjoy subtitles in languages we don't speak ourselves. Help us translate the captions to more languages by going to: th-cam.com/users/timedtext_cs_p...
Viewers have described this as a beautifull film with an emotional story. The strong script was one of the driving forces behind the creation of this film. Many crewmembers and castmembers found themselves drawn to the script.
The Open Filmteam is commited to giving everyone in the Netherlands the chance to participate in the creation of films of a professional level. Its productions give unique experiences to both its professional as its amateur participants. openfilmteam.nl/welcome-to-ea...
Though made on a shoe-string budget, we've strived to make this a cinematic film with the depth the story deserves. Due to the professionals in key positions during the creation, the visual style, sound design and music were all of professional quality. Combined with great locations, set design and hand crafted props we hope this is a film both lovers of indy films as people with a more average taste in movies will enjoy.
This films was made possible by the support of several Dutch organisations and funds. Among the contributors were: Fonds Cultuurparticipatie, VSBfonds, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds and Gigant.

Realistically, if an arch structure like this still exists on Earth after the extinction of humanity, the most important information it contains is not personnal files, but digitized DNA sequences.
In that sense, the ambassador is not the last living human, he is the first man of the new humanity, ready to be reborn with the help of a benevolent alien species.

    • @TheZapan99
      @TheZapan99 4 ปีที่แล้ว +66

@@armastat Thousands of people alive today come from frozen eggs and sperm, sometimes even small embryos revived during in-vitro fecondations. At one point they were all frozen cells kept in tanks, yet today they are real people, not different from you and me. But those gametes are expensive to maintain in liquid nitrogen. Therefore, if humanity was facing extinction, DNA would be sequenced and stored in digital form. The only reason we don't do that today is because our computer storage capacity is still limited, but a day will come where digital DNA will be equivalent to organic samples. This would make no difference for an alien species, that would still not consider our species as extinct, as long as they could read our DNA, even is no live specimen was to be found on Earth.

With a low budget and amateur cast this short film was definitely above average. It draws the viewer in with questions of why and how. The conclusion was easily foreseen however. The takeaway is a well known trope of humanity regretting it's actions too late to reverse the conclusion. With more short films like this, the writers and studio have a long but bright road ahead.

Sometime later: "Ma'am, we have trouble getting enough bandwith for the video feeds, we either need to stream in lower quality, interlace the video or use less camera's" "By God, no! Are you crazy? Reassign some engineers from life support to solve this problem! This is number one priority!" After the last ambassador crashed: "Ma'am, we lost all ambassadors! We are doomed!" Micah Fischer Right, like what would be the point of finding another species to help us from the planet we destroyed just so we can help them destroy their planet.... Doesn’t make a lot of sense.... I think it would be better if we decided to go colonize a habitable that is unoccupied by intelligent life. We need to learn from our own mistakes on a different planet before we decide to introduce ourselves to another intelligent species as, “Planet destroyers...” And not even the powerful type of planet destroyers.... We are planet destroyers simply because we live.... We would anyone want to help a species that could so easily be stop from destroying planets if all they have to do is simply wipe them out...

So we know the hyper drives aren’t very reliable, so why couldn’t they just send robots or pilot it from back here on Earth? It would be way less dangerous and a robot could probably drive with a lower chance of error. And if the Earth was dying as they said it was, they could just have the robots scan for life forms AND habitable planets. That way when the robot finds a habitable planet they can prepare colony ships in case they don’t find any aliens to help them.

Good question! We considered that in pre-production and came to a similar conclusion. This is why they did send drones as well. Sending human pilots as well seems a smart idea because it's hard to teach a computer to recognise something of which we have no examples and it would be more comforting to most people to know there were people out there too. The other vessels out there without human pilots are only quickly referrenced to by the major when he says '6000 are already out there' so we certainly don't expect people to catch that. Still, we enjoyed speculating about this and appreciate you do so as well! Thanks for watching!

What if any aliens come to earth (doesn't matter if they use FTL or not, it is just a question of time to travel, not more) and start to colinize earth without consideration of humans? And what is wrong about finding ET-Races that could help us to save our own planet instead of occupying another one? In this movie the aliens were peaceful enough to bring rene back to earth, maybe they would habe been peaceful enough to help humans saving earth...

As long as we keep billing each other for the betterment of our species we’ll never get anywhere....
I mean think about it.... “Oh you need meds.... Oh these meds can save your life? Well, how fortunate for you, we have the meds you need, but you either pay us or you died, plain and simple.”
We are all to worried about how much money we can make off of other people’s problems....
And do you think a species would really care to help us.... Knowing us we wouldn’t help unless they gave us something in return....

King Sick Puppy, a quick jump to an exoplanet with earth-like conditions would have been the perfect solution to keeping humanity alive.
Upkeep? You don’t need a lot of maintenance for a one-way trip.
Resources? During the funeral scene, Earth was still quite livable and society was still functioning. They still had plenty of resources and volunteers for colonization.
Time? Like I said, Earth was still livable. Not only that, but they already had the technology they needed to relocate. They had plenty of time.
Luck? The first pod to be destroyed was on its fourth jump. Several of those pods lasted for over a hundred jumps. A colony ship would only need to last for one jump. The odds are in their favor.
Humanity didn’t need an alien race to solve their problems. They had everything they needed to save their species.

@@realitycheck3363 Though your confusion is understandable with the current climate around such words, Tech 52 understood the film right. The word 'men' has meanings other than just the plural of man. It may also refer to a group consisting of people of both genders (as humans does). This is even more the case in this scene as the Major saying it comes from a military background. In the military, it's particularly common to refer to (mixed) troops as 'men'. In the vocabulary of a military man, not only is it a term referring to both men and women, but to specifically those men and women that serve (under them). We're happy to see most people understand it to mean all under his command, even if they don't conciously know the word men has that literal meaning.

      @KuraIthys 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

You wanna be upset about it, be upset at the asshats that redefined the meaning of 'man'. about 6-7 centuries ago to be exclusionary.
Did you know there is at least one known historical legal document that states something to the effect of:
'To my daughter, who is a man, I leave my estate'.
Unless you're going to posit some weird gender confusion the meaning of that should be obvious.
'man' in this context has no gendered implication whatsoever - it refers to someone who is a legally responsible adult.
      More messed up words:
'he' was originally gender neutral. Hence why the bible refers to God as 'He', which carried no gendered implications originally, but does retroactively due to the shift in meaning.
'woman' and 'she' are dubious terms created right during the shift away from 'man' and 'he' being neutral terms, and carry the implicit implication of females (oh look another such word) being 'other'.
Did you notice by the way that the period following this shift in language also coincided with a gradual decline of the legal rights of women, until they eventually could no longer own property of their own and were not considered people for legal purposes? (a male relative was considered their legal guardian - father, brother, husband, etc.)
I bet you're wondering how we referred to male and female before this shift? Well, the archaic terms have their own problems, given that they are wepn and wyf respectively (and yes those words are what they sound like)
      While we're at it...
'girl' referred to ANY child whatsoever, and was also neutral. (also it was common practice for children to wear dresses no matter whether they were male or female. This continued until fairly recently. There's childhood pictures of US president Roosevelt wearing dresses as a boy - also pink was a colour for boys and pale blue for girls up until about 1930 or so...)
'boy' originally had nothing to do with sex or gender and was a specific type of servant. (something like 'you there, boy!' is directed at a servant, not a child.)
Now let's get into a few other odds and ends while we're at it.
the term 'gender' has gone through a large number of shifts in meaning over time.
Prior to about 150-200 years ago it was meaningless and nonsensical to talk about a person's gender.
Gender was grammatical. Words have genders, people (or animals for that matter) do not. Simple.
Perhaps due to embarrassment or something, it picked up the idea of being used as a synonym for 'sex'. (not the act, but the concept of the male and female sexes).
This meaning started to shift in the 1950's with feminist discourse due to needing some way to distinguish the superficial and cultural aspects of a person's identity as male, female or whatever else might exist from the things that are truly biological. (the former is a much longer list than the latter it turns out. Very few 'innate' differences remain once you strip away the arbitrary cultural and social ones like how people are expected to act in company, how they dress, hair length, and so on.)
Of course, some people still insist on rejecting the mental and/or social definitions of gender even though they're some 70 years old, in favour of the 'old' definition which is only about twice that age...
      But whatever.
The meaning of language changes over time. That's something that's inevitable.
But being ignorant of the history of words leads to arguments that focus on the wrong thing.
The real question in historical isn't 'why are people sexist and exclusionary by referring to a mixed sex group as 'men''
But in fact it is, 'how did we end up with a sexist and exclusionary definition of a formerly neutral word?'
We are all men, except those of us who at some point in history fell victim to a language shift that suddenly excluded and 'othered' us.
Which, conveniently, allowed the idea that women are lesser beings to flourish for quite a while.
When you change a term to exclude a group, you can also easily exclude them from anything that uses that language in it that they would have formerly been covered under.
If a wyf is now a woman, and a woman is not a man...
Then they no longer have any of the legal rights that state that you have to be a 'man' to have them, because they are not 'men' and thus these documents clearly don't refer to them...
Yeah... History can be messed up.
