Just finished the oil and coolant change on my 2010 R1 and your videos on both saved me tons of money. My mechanic is great but 95 an hour and he marks my bike at 2 just for oil cause of how tight it is to work in there around the headers! Thank you!
Lindy Hoagland I would go with Mobil 1 10w40 Racing 4T. Walamrt should have the best price. This is the oil I am going to use on my next oil change. I have used this oil on all my bikes in the past and never had a problem. I also use Mobil 1 for my BMW. So far 8 years 222k miles and no single problem with the engine.
Great video! I am about to undergo the first oil change. When I change the oil on a car I always replace the crush washer on the drain plug. I hope none of the 1/4 turn brackets break when I take my fairings off again. I had two break on me on my 13' R1 when I was taking them off to install the frame sliders.
When I watch a DYI or How to video I don't need a music video especially if it is a step by step! I want to hear it being explained to me so I can do the work while hearing it explained!
Thanks for the very descripted video I just got a 09 and wanna change the oil ill go step by step as u did thanks nd btw that dam song is stuck in my head now lol
Sen De Silva Try wrapping a portion of the header in tin foil before changing your oil. If you take a few minutes you can fold the foil in such a way that it funnels the oil from the filter away from the header and directly into your oil catch pan.
Great video, although it stressed me out watching how tight your torqued that sump plug to. Definitely recommend a torque wrench for that job, since the cost of over torqueing it can be so high and it's very easy to do by accident.
Not sure why you took the side fairing off. I just removed the lowers on each side and was able to do mine without any space/clearance issues. But very good video nevertheless.
helpfull video , but what i didn't capt is at the end 13:40 "between two marks" wich marks are u talking about! thanks for you're patience, i'm noob on mécanique
amine brci It's not clear in the video but on most bikes you will be able to find two marks on the oil level inspection window indicating minimum and maximum. You just need to make sure that the oil level is between those two marks.f.tqn.com/y/motorcycles/1/S/e/I/-/-/OilLevel.jpg Good luck!
You can go by the marks, but you will allways get the motor light on why? low oil r1 take just alittle more then 4 quarts, just a little so your light will not come on. Mine was going on and the dealer says put a little more oil in it, 4 quarts and around one inch from the bottle. Your light will not come on if you do not ride hard. I do and just a little more oil and no problems. no light . Great video!! Jacob K
i LOVE Yamaha …i've owned 6 R1's …2001,2003,2005,2007,2009 & 2012 with the TCS ..i think it's time Yamaha upgraded it's bike.. also I hate having my ass kicked by the older R1's on the motorway, ESPECIALLY the 2005 model (never should have sold it)
Nice bike but why did it take you all day to do an oil change? Also when i do oil changes i put oil around the filter just so its easier to take out next time... If you dont its gonna be like pulling out king arthurs sword from the rock
I just have a question. Why do you warm up the bike first? I'm used to working on cars and have never done this, just wondering if it is something specific to bikes? Thanks!
Nice video but always put blankets down when taking farings off as they scratch so easy. Put a rag on the headers before oil filter removal and clean any spill off the headers with brake ckeaner. Good job tho
How do you get the bottom pin out of the side fairing? My 2009 r1 has 3 different pins in the fairings. The top 2 on the left side are the pop out ones with the buttons, and the bottom one is like a big tac... I am afraid it will break if I wedge it out.
The specs are in the owners manual but I always tighten it as much as I can (my personal preference). A lot of my friends don't even use a tool to tighten it. To answer your question i would say: Tighten it good, but not too much :)
Tighten the oil filter by hand only if you can grip it sufficiently. This R1 doesn't offer much space for hand-tightening, so tool it if necessary but don't get aggressive.
You should fill your new oil filter about halfway with fresh oil too and then spin it around on the side so that the oil gets absorbed by the filter medium. Do this a second time until it won't absorb anymore, then install the filter. This helps the system get oil pumping quicker after the initial startup on the fresh oil. It would be nice to be able to fill the filter all the way, but since our bikes have a sideways mounted filter it would just pour out when installing the new filter. Another trick is to put aluminum foil or some clean rags on top of your headers so they don't get soaked in the old oil coming out of the filter upon removal.

You forgot your torques on the drain bolt and oil filter. 15N if I remember rightly for the filter... You look liked you were giving it 1500N! :-). Good vid tho...
I DID EXACTLY as you said but after i started the bike IT STARTED SMOKING from the front just under the oil filter. can someone tell me why? i know i did nothing wrong in terms of the oil change but when the engine reached about 70 degrees celcius it started smoking. i'm a very paranoid guy so i just turned it off immediately too scared to start again. anyone know what;s wrong??
surprised nobody has answered such a simple question.. yes, the engine and transmission share the same oil. you can not service the transmission separate from the engine.
but the engine normal operating temperature is when the coolant temperature is 200 F :) I didn't say anything about engine temperature display - right? Anyways thanks for straighten this up :)

I liked so much learn more about how can I change the Yamaha R1 oil! I'm from Brazil and I'm glad to you!
Awesome step by step video man. Doing my first oil change on my 09 R1 today. Appreciate the upload.
Great video! Thanks, bro! R1 riders, let's go!!!
Put foil around your headers when doing the filter so you don't get oil on them!
Much easier than my old R6 ! Look forward to doing that after winter on my new R1 :o)
Thanks a lot Mike. It helped me a lot. But the oil filter tested my skills. lol.
Sometimes it might be trucky :)
I learned how to change the oil, just to buy a R1... :) Good video.
Dude, AWESOME VIDEO! Well put together and to the point. I was looking at what I needed to take off to get to the filter and got a "refresher" class.
I am very happy that I could help:) Thanks for the comment!
Well on my way to pick up oil and filter. Do you see any probs with 10W40 High Mileage Valvoline Nextgen?

Thank you...very helpful. Now I can change the oil on my R1 2009 with the help of your detailed video.. Thanks again
Best tutorial on TH-cam

Thanks for taking the time to show us that!
When I watch a DYI or How to video I don't need a music video especially if it is a step by step! I want to hear it being explained to me so I can do the work while hearing it explained!
thx man very simple and great demonstration
I'd have added oil in before putting fairings on and start engine to make sure no leaks
Thanks for the very descripted video I just got a 09 and wanna change the oil ill go step by step as u did thanks nd btw that dam song is stuck in my head now lol
Thanks for great manual!!!!!!!!! :) This weekend I'll change the oil by the manual. :)

What kind of frame sliders do you have??
genuine Yamaha (GYTR)
Gracias tío, buena suerte con tu bicicleta!
Nice bike but why did it take you all day to do an oil change? Also when i do oil changes i put oil around the filter just so its easier to take out next time... If you dont its gonna be like pulling out king arthurs sword from the rock
Nice Vid Mike. 2 questions:
Where did you get those frame sliders?
Do you a vid How to clean and lube your chain?
Thx u
I bought the frame sliders from Yamaha R1. These are GYTR frame slider. I will do chain video soon!
Mike12r1 - Official Channel What kind of oil is better? and Why are you using non synthetic?
I used non synthhetic becasue it was my 1st or second oil change. I have used syntethinc on the third. I use Mobil 1 10w-30 and works best for me :)
Hello, how many liters of oil did the change take?
Thank you
Good to know even if I don't have an R1 :)
Great vid! Lol. Caption along with video.
Anh Thy Tôn Thất Thank you :)
Ya,, they all can b a pain,, each has its good and bad but u got a good looking bike though,, I look at one when I was shopping around
thank you Lee :)
Ur welcome man,, keep the video's comming
I just have a question. Why do you warm up the bike first? I'm used to working on cars and have never done this, just wondering if it is something specific to bikes? Thanks!
Oil comes out better when it warm!
thank you Carlos!
Thanks. Best video
Thanks a lot!

Czesc Mike czy polecasz R1 jako pierwsze moto ??

Hey Bill,
All pins should be the same. Just try to take it out and replace if you like
After you turn it off do you seat on the bike or you let it cool first
I wonder if the fact the bike is sitting in the stand would change the oil reading.
How much are you suppose to tighten the new filter? Looks like you torqued it quite a bit.
12 ft. lbs. on the oil filter cartridge
where did you get that oil spout that you screw on to the gallon
What’s the best oil for 2012?
Do I need yamalube? Or is 10w40 fine
thanks a lot, now i wont pay my mechanic to do it for me, do you have videos on putting yoshimura exhausts?
You should fill your new oil filter about halfway with fresh oil too and then spin it around on the side so that the oil gets absorbed by the filter medium. 15-50w lubricant its ok for r1?
Where did you get those turn signals?

thank you Brother.
great video.
Im glad i own a naked bike i can just reach and replace everything with ease nor hastle.
Skipped the part how you removed the oil filter lol im struggling af to get it out by hand without a proper tool
torque spec for the oil drain plug?
You used 20w 50 is that okay
Or you could just take the right fairing off to get the filter out, and just one rear left fastener to get to the drain plug. 👍
You forgot your torques on the drain bolt and oil filter. 15N if I remember rightly for the filter... You look liked you were giving it 1500N! :-). Good vid tho...
Curious why you didnt opt for the K&N filter with the wrench socket top? Those yamaha oil filters are a factory installed conspiracy lol
+k129h8 thats what I have right now
Why
Great dude thx
I watch this video every time I change oil
A ja tradycyjnie Lewa W Górę i kciuk w górę. Co to za nuta?
I DID EXACTLY as you said but after i started the bike IT STARTED SMOKING from the front just under the oil filter. can someone tell me why? i know i did nothing wrong in terms of the oil change but when the engine reached about 70 degrees celcius it started smoking. i'm a very paranoid guy so i just turned it off immediately too scared to start again. anyone know what;s wrong??
It started smoking because you probably spilled oil on the headers (exhaust pipes). Don't worry about it, it will smoke for a while and then stop.
yes that's what a lot of guys have told me now so how long should i start it for the smoke to go away?
Thanks for sharing this useful video!!! But I have Question, Could you tell me the Oil filter wrench size? 67mm ? Thank you. :0
Get the K&N filter cartridges. 17mm socket.
be very difficult to attach the oil filter...
I found it quicker and easier to just remove the bottom half of the fairing, can remove filter and install new one just as easily
sry but what is the type of this camera
Canon Vixia HF M500
awesome
how much quart of oil does the bike need?
Almost 4 quarts
someone know this soundtrack?
thank you
i have the 2012 R1 WHy the fuck would they put the oil filter there it makes no sense to me
BTW nice R1 you got
Does anyone know if the R1 09-14 share engine oil with the transmission?
surprised nobody has answered such a simple question.. yes, the engine and transmission share the same oil. you can not service the transmission separate from the engine.

good advise!, but I always try to save on time:)
Oil change is pretty much the same on all Japanese bikes
probowalem kiedys na innym motorize I nie niestety nie wyszlo
