    r1 owner here-- the thing I would have added re: urban use, beyond just the coolant temp - the bike in general **GETS** **HOT** hot hot hot hot HOT. If you're not going 70+ it just doesn't have the airflow to keep itself appropriately cool for urban riding. This means the aux fans kick in early / often / (always). You will abhor every stop sign/red light on the planet, as motion is your only savior from drowning in the lava-cycle's fiery wrath. The "fire logo" you put on this thing is 100% appropriate.
    If you live in phoenix like me, the dead of summer actually becomes an off-season. Good thing all winter is fair game!
    That said, not in a million years would I trade it for a cbr/gsxr/aprillia/bmw. Mayyyyyybe a duc. Maybe- but that would be a 35-40k bike, and this is ~19k.

    I have owned 3 of them, one an R1M. They are magic on the race track, not to mention faster back roads. Miserable around town though or on rough backroads, though the current generation is better in that regard than the previous. It is a really well built motorcycle.

    Definitely not designed for long rides. This has to be one of the most track-focused bikes I've ridden. You mentioned how smooth it is, and I 100% agree. On track it's amazing. The R1M is even sweeter, give one of those a try on the track. Both deserve to be on the race track.

      Yeah, the daily rider aspect is kinda goofy for me. First of all, you will want two bikes. If I'm considering an R1 and I commute every day, I would just get an R7 and a decent used commuter bike. Or a slightly used R1 and a cheap commuter. If you want an R1 and you get something else, you will still always want that R1. Okay, maybe an MT10 could scratch that crossplane itch and still be a comfy commuter, but it's still not an R1.

    Haha😂😂 the giggles when you went off road on the R1, that was very funny, then followed by the wheelie. Loved it. Great motorcycles these R’1’s, and by great I mean legendary. It is far from a beginner bike. This generation R1 is very track focused. Ok on short street rides, but they are definitely designed for the race track. They feel great to ride, so smooth with loads of power. Hence your laughter when riding it. Good video, loved it.

    As Zack recommended the Street Triple 765 to mark_craver, I can only agree. I have a 2020 RS. Comfy position for daily riding, commuting and the weekend twisty run, but when you take it to the track and set up the suspension (only takes 2-3 minutes) and electronics to track mode, oh boy. It feels like you have a separate bike for track days. The intake sound is addictive too.

      I rode an R1 on a demo day. The chaperoned ride that barely goes 50 mph.
      I could see how that bike and those ergos might make sense when you actually get on it, but in those conditions both the bike and I were completely miserable.
      30 min of that. I just kept getting off and on the throttle to play with the little g force indicator.
      I'm with you.

    Zero to prison in first gear: Superbikes are fantastic to ride, but obviously. I'm too irresponsible to ride one! Yamaha should build an R1-based S1000XR competitor!

      NO. It's not a good road bike. It's extremely uncomfortable. And stop going to the top of the chain for a first bike. Get yourself a 400cc Ninja. Or the MT07 range. Most learners can do far more on MT's and will be frustrated on superbike like the R1.

    I own a 2023 V4s and I rode my friend's 2019 R1 yesterday and I must say the R1 is a much more smooth and REFINED ride compare to the V4 which is just RAW. every thing is smooth AF. the only down side of the R1 is the narrow handle bars. It's bit harder to initiate counter steer compare to the V4. V4 is twitchy so it turns really fast and easy. R1 is smooth and stable. the word best describes the R1 is REFINED

    I think all bikes should be compared in three (3) categories. All bikes of a similar class (super, naked, adv, etc.) and then whittled down to compared the class within +\- $1,000 . And finally, how it is as a daily rider.
    I think that’s what the fans want.
    Thank you for everything you do, much appreciated.
    Example: MV Agusta Brutale 1000 RR vs. BMW M1000 R vs. Kawasaki Z900

    I own this exact bike and frankly couldn't agree more with the entire review. It's a bad (perhaps laughably so) streetbike and a great trackbike, with a unique character that somehow manages to feel pretty intoxicating in both settings. Truly more of a lust object than a rational choice.
    Totally fair criticisms about the small display, humdrum suspension, and so-so brakes aside... I have to point out that you do get a peppering of exotica compared to much of its similarly-priced superbike competition: cast magnesium wheels and subframe, titanium exhaust headers (and much of the muffler, if I'm not mistaken), titanium intake valves and titanium connecting rods.

    I bought a brand new 2009 Yamaha R1 as my first street bike back when it came out, and used it as my primary vehicle for 2 years. Lately been thinking about getting a new one to relive my youth. Curious how this generation compares to the 2009 for street use. I lucky to live in the outskirts of western Oregon with lots of curvy roads and not much population so everywhere is kinda a private race track.

    If I understand correctly, the R1 engine is so smooth because they can't remove the balancer, unlike all the other regular inline-4s that have deleted the balancer because they have end-to-end balance naturally to chase peak whp (but not totally balanced, so they still vibe without a balancer).

    • @Josh-cw8by
      @Josh-cw8by 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It feels smooth because at least one piston is always in motion. This translates into a smoother running engine and torque application.
      In a flatplane i4 there are points in the cycle where all pistons stop moving. You can put together the rest.
      Balancing shafts help as well.

    • @xorbe2
      @xorbe2 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Josh-cw8by Triumph 120° triples also have rotational inertia (what you are describing), but they vibrate like crazy at certain rpm ranges. My smoothest engine ever was the FZ6R (inline-4).

    • @Josh-cw8by
      @Josh-cw8by 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@xorbe2 You can't compare that as having 3 cylinders brings its own vibrations.
      It's the low inertial torque from having one piston always in motion that brings that "smooth" feeling.

    @danielklopp7007 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Zach; you probably know this, but I thought I'd point it out anyway; @1:48 when you were using your fingers to demonstrate piston movement in a typical inline 4, you had pistons 2 & 4 rising and falling together (which would lead to a rocking couple - similar to a 180 degree parallel twin)... in fact pistons 1 & 4 rise and fall together (thus cancelling the rocking couple, leaving only secondary imbalance induced by rod swing).

      '98 to '01 (carbureted) bikes were bottom end and midrange monsters, not as much peak HP as newer versions, but a lot stronger off idle that made throttle control paramount. And yes they were definitely the 'smallest' ergonomically, and the shortest wheelbase and also the lightest of them all.
