I'm disappointed that you only did one Angelina song. It's been two years and you've only done this one song of this genius singer. You state that your expertise is child singers, then Angelina more than fits the bill. So, how about it?

After all the skills you acknowledge, it would be nice to see you reacting on some more of her songs. My guess you will be pleasantly surprised the way she is able to adjust to any musical style and every text. This song was very loud at times, but her softer dynamics are just so warm and captivating! She shocked many vocal coaches! Even to tears sometimes! May I invite you to watch her recent work? She is 15 yo now!

What witchery is this!!! Thank you for this reaction. I would love to hear more of your reactions - you are bright, cheerful, honest and good grief, so stunningly... knowledgeable! 😅 I do mean that sincerely. Such a lovely, refreshing change from “I don’t know what song this Angela Jordania is singing but dude it’s awesome please hit like and subscribe comment below and go to my patreon page & hit me up for 20”.
Your points about her voice are all extremely valid, of course (because like, you know your s**t and we don’t). But as others have said, I can gladly report that Angelina has never come even close to reproducing the explosiveness, growliness, or tongue rootiness of this performance. In fact, there are several performances of this song from later in her childhood and while some them are really awesome also, none of them are sung in the same style. In fact she has barely ever used her growl since then, certainly nothing even remotely close to this scale. She does have a bit of a jazzy Kermit voice that she will incorporate into some of the jazzier songs, and does have a couple of other powerful songs like “I Have Nothing“ where she pushes the upper limit of her range and “It’s a Man’s World“ where she drowns our a military orchestra but for the most part she has clearly made a decision to take it easier on her voice and focus on safer singing habits since this song. It’s almost like she just wanted to go all out on this one song, perhaps as her tribute to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.
One of the things I really appreciate about Angelina is that, despite having such an insane array of tricks and vocal styles to draw from, she (almost) never employs any of them just for the sake of employing them. I said “almost” because I think her America’s Got Talent performances were tailored to that particular audience, and hence the drawn out melismas and de rigeur belts that were in all of those performances (especially the first two). She does have some performances, especially earlier on in her childhood, where she’s heavier on the stylization (sometimes a bit much for my taste), but they tend to focus more on her vocal fry and vibrato, which was some cases was quite exaggerated (“I’d Rather Go Blind”) to capture some of the older jazz sounds that she was influenced by back when the rest of us were learning how to eat with a spoon. Her singing style has tended to become more restrained and minimalistic as she has matured and I definitely mean in a good way. Someday you can compare her versions of “Summertime” from Norway’s Got Talent and from a concert with the KORK orchestra a few years later.
I’d love to hear your reaction to songs like “Young and Beautiful“ by Lana Del Rey or “Cry Me a River“ by Julie London et al. “Every Time We Say Goodbye” is another one. As is that KORK version of “Summertime”. These performances are just achingly beautiful but they get their power from their simplicity and the subtlety with which she uses any special vocal techniques, if she uses them at all. (Links below)
I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned, but Angelina recently signed with Republic Records. I’m sure anyone else who mentioned it would’ve also mentioned that his is the label with which Taylor Swift, Drake, Julia Michaels (one of my favourites - I hope she connects with Angelina and takes her under her wing - and I hope AJ can collaborate and learn from her absolutely brilliant songwriting talents:), The Weeknd, Florence & the Machine, Ariana Grande and many more like them are signed. Everything I have learned about this label suggests that they are pretty responsible about taking care of their artists and allowing them to be themselves rather than forcing them into some kind of mold. And they are also, of course, just massive (in influence - they are actually pretty small in number) and will see to it that Angelina gets the exposure to be as successful as she wants to be. I do hope they set her up with a top-notch vocal coach just to protect that delicate and precious instrument of hers, particularly since it has had a lot of use going back to a very young age.
We have known about the label since an interview with her uncle/manager in a Norwegian music publication in late summer, but they only a few days ago put up her own page on their artist site. (Nothing except a couple photos and her social media links but it does make it official!)
I really REALLY love your reactions - you are literally THE best and I hope we get to hear more Angelina reactions from you soon.
      Bewitched in Canada,
      Dave
      As promised ...

As someone that has been following Angelina's journey for a very long time, and has watched (literally) thousands of reaction videos with her, I have to say this is THE most in depth look at the technical side of her vocals I have seen. I really appreciate that you took the time to explain it all in such detail. As far as the possibility of damage to her young voice, you will be happy to hear this particular performance is a one time thing. I have seen her perform this song many other times, but never again in this exact way.
One of the things you noticed that really sets Angelina ahead of the pack is her insane ability to control the time and space around the music. Her timing, her phrasing, her musicality is just off the charts. She is able to use all the right techniques to convey the emotion of the song... which is another thing that sets her apart.... she seems to understand the intended emotions of a song in a way that is so beyond her years, and then she can relay those emotions in a way that allows us to understand them too.
One thing that I think you may have missed (or maybe I just missed you mentioning it) is how incredibly effortless she make it look. She is one of the most natural singers I have ever watched. It's as if it flows right from her soul. She once said (when she was even younger than she is here) that singing was as important as breathing for her. She makes it seem like it is as easy as breathing for her as well.
I can tell that you immediately understand how rare her talent is, and you have a LOT more to hear from this young genius, so I really look forward to seeing you check out more of her stuff.
...and as with anyone new discovering Angelina, I have to leave you with this short bio so that you can learn a little more about her background and her kind and beautiful soul
    *Angelina Jordan*
    - Angelina Jordan was born Jan 10 2006 in Oslo, Norway. She is currently 14
    - She began singing at the age of one and a half
    - At 2 or 3 she discovered Jazz through her grandmother and started studying all the greats from Jazz history with youtube videos.
    - *Why Angelina always sings barefoot* - When Angelina was 6 years old, she was traveling with her grandmother and met a poor girl with no shoes trying to make money on the streets. They talked for a while and discussed their dreams. It was cold and the girl had scars on her feet. Seeing this, Angelina took off her shoes and gave them to the girl. The girl thanked her and told Angelina she would pray for her every day. That day Angelina made a vow to always sing barefoot until all the children of the world could have shoes. To this day, whenever Angelina is performing in public, she sings barefoot as a way to remember that little girl and to remind us that there are less fortunate people in the world that could use our help.
Angelina holds so true to this promise that she has sung outdoors in Norway, in december... barefoot. She has sung at a dinner with ex-pres Obama... barefoot. She went on AGT (possibly the biggest stage in the world)...bare foot. She made a promise at 6 years old, and has stuck strong to it for years. That takes a special kind of person.
    - She has always been the driving force behind her own singing career. It was her that asked her mother to take her to Norways Got Talent, where she auditioned at 7 years old and went on to win the whole show at just 8 years old.
    - In an interview after the show, when asked what she was going to do with the prize money, the 8 year old replied, "I would like to give it to orphans that need clothes and shoes"
    - When Angelina was 9 years old she became the youngest published author in Norway, when she wrote a book about the story of why she doesn't wear shoes when she sings. She donated proceeds from the sales of the book to help children in need.
    - The reason you may not have heard of her is because her parents are very protective of her childhood. After she won NGT, they did not want her to be thrust into stardom before she had a chance to grow up as a normal child, and get her education. They allowed her to do a few select shows (mainly private and charity events) with a couple public shows every year when she is out of school. Her mother said in an interview that they have turned down 90% of the offers that came in. Over the years since NGT, they have turned down offers from many major record labels and even disney.
    - Angelina has covered more than 130 songs and over 65 artists in the last 6 years. She always selects the songs herself... everything ranging from old classic jazz to modern pop. She is able to change her voice to match any song she sings and make it her own. (she can cover Amy Winehouse and Lana del Rey like nobody else)
    - Angelina has collaborated with some very big names over the last few years... Quincy Jones, Mark Ronson, David Foster, Alan Walker and many more. All of which heard her and were blown away by her talent.
    - Angelina has written three of her own original songs: "What is Life", "Shield" and "Oslo". (all are amazing...all can be found on youtube)
In summary, Angelina Jordan is destined to be one of the greatest singers to have ever lived. This is just my opinion, but if you listen closely to any of her stuff you will hear the greatness. She sings with a natural style. There is no acting, no showing off, there are no unnecessary runs, or big belty notes just for the purpose of saying "hey look at me sing". She once said "when I sing I go into a beautiful world in my head", and you can always hear the results of that. When Angelina sings it is pure soul, pure emotion, pure music.
Update: On Aug 26, 2020 Angelina's Manager/Uncle announced in an interview that they have decided on Republic Records as the best fit for Angelina and she is now signed with them as their "highest priority new artist". She has done so much already, but at 14 she is just getting started!!!

Great "in depth look" and I too appreciate Julia's thorough explanation with illustrations no less!
Angelina has a natural feel for every song and makes it hers!
I think the spirits of singers past are watching out for her and her voice. She never harms her vocal muscles
by doing her performances constantly the same way.
It's like she's playing with her voice to find the right technique but in such a natural way, for every song she sings.
What a treasure she is, both talent wise and her personality.

@@carlnietoweise4653 I could never forget "summertime" ;) Both the 8 year old, and 10 year old versions which are very different and still equally special. That would actually be a good example to show how she changes and evolves her delivery and rarely does a song the same way twice.
But one thing I have learned in making so many reaction request.... it is an impossible task to select which ones to recommend because her library of quality performances is so massive. I chose those two partially because she didn't get to see the softer side of angelina in this one, and both of those are good for that. Her 2016 "Every time we say goodbye" is one of the prettiest, smoothest things I have ever heard in my whole life... th-cam.com/video/KRSI8HmTHJA/w-d-xo.html When you listen to this "I put a spell on you" and that "every time we say goodbye" back to back it is hard to fathom that they are coming from the same person.

This was a bit of a tough video for me but I hope you guys enjoyed the insights into child voice development. One of the things I didn't mention was that because children's vocal folds are short and their pharynx's (resonating tracts) are small this means that their natural sound is a fair bit lighter with higher vocal qualities. Manipulating the vocal tract/laryngeal position is just one of the ways you can change this.

i have a question about "child singers": how puberty affects their singing ability (if it does) ? can someone be an excellent singer at 8 and become "meh" at 18 because of that ?

    • @jvoxfox
      @jvoxfox  3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

@@osez111 i wish I could give a concrete answer for that but in all honesty it depends on the person, who is guiding them through voice change/whether they're doing any singing at all etc a lot of factors come into play. Naturally voice change is more drastic for boys/men but girls also go through voice change which affects them in similar ways but at different degrees. I could possibly talk about this in a video if you like :)

If you intend to follow Angelina Jordan more, I will subscribe to you, as I have 60 or 70 other reactors. Another phenomenal child singer you should check out is Amira Willighagen. She is Dutch and won Holland's Got Talent at age nine. She is now 16. She sings primarily opera (unbelievably!), pop opera, cross-over. The most beautiful operatic voice I've ever heard in my 65 years, and a young lady with a beautiful heart for people as well, just like Angelina. Much of her earnings have gone to build many playgrounds for orphaned and underprivileged children in South Africa.

If you watch Screamin' Jay Hawkins' performance on the Arsenio Hall Show (on Y.Tube) you'll see where some of her choices originated. (That was his face on the candle at the beginning.) I have a hard time recommending Jay's TV and video appareances for comparisons because these were done 20-30 years after this was clearly his One Hit Wonder. He had to be soooo bored that he was willing to do anything to pump himself up. I prefer to argue that his original recordings (the audio-only versions) were far more "his original choice". But... something more... he never composed that song to sound like his video-act. Never. I think he composed it thinking in terms much closer to the way Angelina performed it - he knew he could belt out This or That portion - he was a belter, after all. Once this recording was done, though, he became known as Screaming. His original recordings were, supposedly, done while he was heavily drunk after a long recording session and much of his signature boozing. So, even his orig recordings had, uh, 'effects' that he never heard in his own head while composing.

    A couple random comments:
    1. Since this is your first exposure to Angelina, you don’t realize that at nine years old, Angelina can be having fun with an over the top cover of Jay Hawkins version of this. Its a one-off performance, but completely indicative of her ability to cover many, many genres like they’re all in her sweet spot.
    2. I’d say you need to listen to only a couple more songs to realize that Angelina is one of the best singers you’ve ever heard. Her voice itself is unique: slightly raspy, soulful, breathy and mesmerizing. But her interpretation of lyrics is unmatched-and I mean that literally. To see her 180 degrees different from I Put a Spell on You, watch, for example, her cover of an Adele song: Someone Like You, or A Million Years Ago.
    3. For a glimpse of her musicality, arranging, and fearlessness before audiences and judges, Bohemian Rhapsody is probably your best introduction to why you‘ll be getting hundreds of comments about Angelina. She is once-in-a-lifetime talented. Just entering her teens now, and easily the most captivating singer I’ve ever heard-and I’ve followed music from the 1950’s.

Just lately I've found tge visual magic of watching her NGT performances without subtitles. Reading them distracts from the shock of hearing her speaking and then singing. Along with the visual shock.

There are tons of reactions out there, but only a very few know or talk about. Haven't read any other comment. All I can say, i ve seen a lot of reactions about Angelinas singing, some multiple times.i am not one of her superfans, but I really do love her music, the covers as well as her original ones. Some songs she did Cover I wouldnt even know. And i am over 60 years old🙄 when she sings, it seems to be some of these timeless music like it's from mozart or so. I know, a weird comparison, but even as impressive and wonderful. And at the end, it has to be mentioned, you are indeed the most beautiful witch, i ve ever seen❤ thank you for this reaction and have a great day⚘😳

This was a tribute to creator of the song Screaming Jay Hawkins (his face is on the mug she holds in the beginning), so the growls and squeals were techniques he used that she gave a nod to. Also, she arranges ALL her songs including this, and the note she wrote was instructions to the pianist. Every band she plays with calls her the Boss because she politely tells them how to play a song the way she wants.

    • @orwellknew9112
      @orwellknew9112 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Very good context. Angelina sang this song in the way that was required to give the homage to the original. Just look at the name of the ordinal artist, it’s not “Whispering” Jay Hawkins, it’s “Screaming” Jay Hawkins. Her other song choices are not all like this, which I think was the concern about the toll it could take on her voice.
Now that she is a teenager, we can see her musical instrument has developed just fine. Angelina’s voice has a great texture to it and she can and does cover a lot of different songs. But where she is a “monster” (I think that’s the term that Julia uses for extreme talent) is her musicality and her ability to connect with the emotions of the listener. I think she is a genius and that’s quite obvious even without even knowing that she’s the one creating her own versions of the songs she covers. Angelina takes songs and makes them different from the originals enough to make them her own while still paying homage to the originals and the emotions they conveyed. That was something Simon Cowell picked up right away on America’s Got Talent when Angelina sang her unique interpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody.

First all, thank you for the most in-depth reviews of one of Angelina’s classic performances. Especially because you appear to be very much qualified to do so. I am in my late 70’s and I have listened to many child singers over the years, but this performance was like NO OTHER! I will likely review your commentary again and again to absorb your insights. It is difficult to reconcile Angelina’s age and the quality of her performance here. I have listened to the reaction of others many, many times...perhaps a couple of hundred by now. And the result is always the same, I am shocked every time, and I am not tired of hearing it again and again. Near the end of your review you suggested that stressing the voice for a performance now and then might not be harmful. Of all her TH-cam performances, over a 130, this was the only one in which she went all out to recreate a tribute to Screaming Jay Hawkins, the original author and artist for this song. I hope you review any and all of Angelina’s repertoire in future...she is a unique talent in all respects: musically, morally, and spiritually!

This was a one-off, she's never repeated it in this manner. It was indeed her very own arrangement of Screamin' Jay Hawkins 1956 original. She choses what songs she sings and how she sings them. She'll go to war (politely) with backup musicians who don't know her and don't think an 8 or 9 year old knows best how she should sing a song. She's not being exploited, never has been. She's fortunate to have a wonderfully supportive family who don't particularly need additional income. Most of the concerts in which she's performed have been for charities. She donated the money she won at NGT to children's charities. Her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani, was also a child prodigy, artist, poet. Angelina has stated that Mery, a jazz lover, is the major inspirational influence in her life. She sings many genres equally well. Here are a couple jazz recommendations: "Feelin' Good" ten years old, charity concert th-cam.com/video/p8kAL-sGJx8/w-d-xo.html; Cole Porter's 1944 classic, "Every Time We Say Goodbye" th-cam.com/video/KRSI8HmTHJA/w-d-xo.html. To get an idea of what is going on in her head, here is an interview on a live program that's popular in both Norway and Sweden. They switch to English at 0:38. At one point she breaks into a line from "Diamonds Are Forever", acapella. This is NOT a reaction request. th-cam.com/video/97hjWg4ToRQ/w-d-xo.html. However, at the end of the interview, she joins her band to present her original song, "Shield", to which you might want to react. th-cam.com/video/lQtUbVKb0vs/w-d-xo.html

It’s funny how Julia has never responded to the fact that it has been REPEATEDLY pointed out that this is a character piece and she completely failed to understand the context. Context is important for this one if she is going to try to shoehorn her PhD research into this reaction. Because it’s exactly apply when it’s not a regular thing. No damage to Angelina’s voice occurred here. And there was no threat of it.

Thanks for your first wonderful reaction with Angelina, Julia, good choice for Halloween and welcome to Angelina's world. She in this song is amazing, I'm sorry for the destabilizing effect ... but this is Angelina 🤗 😜 and this song is a kind of investiture, is the watershed between simple listeners and fans of that girl. Certainly not many adults know Screamin', certainly the only little girl of 9 years in the world who knows him and who also thinks of singing him without any fear is Angelina.❤️
And it's incredible that this adaptation is all her own (the sheets written) and that at that age she was able to evaluate and transform, according to her sensitivity, such a particular and powerful song 😊 How is it possible that a girl of that age can make and sing the most beautiful transposition of this song from 65 years ago ... and it has been sung by many great performers.
Angelina is not only what you saw in this perfect performance, she is much more, even very different, but everything she does is at a superlative level, she sang about 130 different interpretations, including covers, songs written for her and her originals written between 11 and 12 years old, if they seem enough 😊❤️
You can react at her first 4 public performances of Norway's Got Talent in 2014 (so about two years before this of this video), those performances made during a few months are the her first public appearances, but you can already see what her was capable of and how her skills had improved in that limited period of time. Or, if you prefer to continue from the end, there are 3 incredible rewritten songs for AGTC 2020

she actually did this lower larynx thing in many other performances (e.g. "feeling good") in order to sound darker, deeper, older,... so let's just hope her vocals didn't develop in a negative way, but on the other hand, in order to defend her way of singing, I believe she has a naturally given lower voice and she needn't put much effort/compression in order to get the sound she wants, therefore I believe her technique is more of a choice and strength rather than liability. It's always a question of how much strain you put on your vocals, if you belt out high notes with a clear voice you can damage your vocals as well, just saying. The rasp in her voice is a characteristic, not fatigue, I can tell after having watched dozens of her performances.

This performance was a one-off. She uses a different voice for every song she sings. That's why one of her many fan nicknames is "Angel of 1000 Voices." She & her family have been turning down record label contracts for the last 6 years since she won Norway's Got Talent at 8. Her family wanted to give her as normal a childhood as possible. She has spent that time developing her craft, covering over 130 songs, including a few originals, on YT from various styles, eras & genre of music. Most of the covers are better than the originals, IMO. She has been working on a new album of original songs since she moved from Oslo to LA. Last August 2020 she signed with Republic Records. She will be 15 on Jan 10, 2021, but her most recent performances were on AGT-Champions, taped Oct 2019 when she was 13. Her 1st performance was a transformation of Queen's iconic song, Bohemian Rhapsody, into a 2 1/2 min jazzy ballad she wrote for her introduction to the American audience. It went viral & gave her World-wide acclaim. It will blow your mind. Trust me! th-cam.com/video/dngwV0MlRGE/w-d-xo.html Good reaction & I subscribed. Your next stop should be her rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody (late 13yrs old) or backwards Summertime (just turned 8yrs old). But she has over 100 covers and some original stuff of which all are amazing. As for her personal future she has recently signed with Republic Records at 14 and a half years old. What a great reaction and analysis! Reactors seem to be a three basic types (with some overlap on the first two): the analyst who understands sound and vocal production (you, of course, and a handful of others), the music aficionado who loves to listen and can sometimes add some explanation about why they like what they are hearing with some knowledge of some techniques like vibrato, vocal fry, etc., and the subscriber garnering hoping for monetization kind who often just tells us she's great while, for many, checking out or being concerned with how they look on camera. Yeah, yeah...there are, of course, variants of these. Your approach is very much appreciated. You understand the need for objective analysis while trying to soothe the, possibly, offended sensibilities of fans who hear negatives. Well done! As you now know, you have opened a huge can of worms, or you have viewed the opening of the rabbit hole that all fans want you to leap into or you have jumped on the train to begin an amazing journey of awe, surprise, and remarkable therapeutic joy. I hope you decide that you want to do this. Angelina is as versatile an artist as any you know (and better than most). Her voice adapts to the needs of the song. She sings different styles and genres with ease and expertise. I'm a new sub-in hoping you continue to react to and analyze the talent of this Angel. Lots of links in the comments. Have fun!!

Please look at her performances from NGT at the age of 7 Billie holiday's Gloomy Sunday; I'm a fool to want you, Nancy Sinatra's Bang Bang, and summertime which is my favorite. She has many fans as you will see and I’m one of them. She has sent us on a journey from age 5 to 14 with You Tube videos, she is incredible. she is now signed to Republic Records.thank you for your reaction i really enjoyed it. Oh it was Angelina's witchery she put a spell on many.

"what witchery is this?" Please, please, please, take the AJ journey. Not just her music, but her history and "story"
Her family and upbringing will comfort your fears for her voice and career.
This has, by far, been my favourite reaction to this video (I would be embarrassed to admit to how many I have watched)
Your detailed critique was unlike anything I've heard before.
I truly feel this girl is a prodigy and I am thankful that we will have many decades to watch her grow and blossom.
Although she has "been around" for 8 years now, I feel we are still "getting in" on the ground floor.

Hi Julia. I recently found your channel and I've been really enjoying your content! The way you connect with the music put in front of you is infectious. I had to watch your video of the Hurt cover by Johnny Cash twice because both the song and your reaction hit me right in the feels. I don't know if you ever look for requests for songs, but based on what I've seen of your content, I think you would really enjoy Helvegen by Wardruna and Aurora. Just a suggestion. Looking forward to seeing more of your content and I definitely subscribed to your channel. Even if I'm not familiar with the music, just listening to your voice is enough to tune in :)

I enjoyed every single moment of your video. I've been listening to music since the early 50's, and though I have no training in vocal arts I longed for the type of forensic analysis of Angelina's performance such as you have provided. I felt much of what you described but had no means of expressing or describing the technical aspects that your training permit and I am completely grateful for your approach. There was nothing to apologize for, your presentation was precisely what I was hoping for. I won't repeat what has been expressed in the earlier comments, but I do look forward to your reaction and analysis of her other works, especially those on AGT and her most recent performances. I will point out one particularly intriguing moment of her performance, one that you had as a still frame for much of your analysis. When she switching stage to the open area in front of her band she belts out, arches her back and appears to stand on her tip-toes and she seems so completely committed to the moment that it takes my breath away. I would love to hear your thoughts on that moment and the techniques she employs. I do note that there are many breaks in the performance and I don't feel it takes away from the production, that said however, it is not a "live" performance and I do respect the difference as captured in many of her other videos. All of this said, this is a performance that I listen to often and it's simply inspired and inspiring. Thank you for your interpretation and I look forward to seeing more of your work. May God bless Angelina and keep her and her family safe. Cheers!

I really appreciate your reaction!!! Although you didn’t say it, it seems this is your very first introduction to Angelina. Welcome to her band of Angels.
I love the way you demonstrate with written notes, pictures, diagrams and very in depth clear explanations, all of your comments. And your way of drawing us in to hear your secret made me smile!!! I appreciate, too, your deep caring of young singers.
Rest assured that Angelina has been well protected by her family. Her parents insisted that she have a normal childhood, well, as normal as anyone of such talent and huge goals and heart can have. She even made a video song with her school, classmates, and teachers! It was really sweet and very much fun.
I would love to hear your reactions on the rest of Angelina‘s singing. Thank you, “witch “ Julia.
I am not sure what you meant when you asked us (16:00) to guess which witchery is which ... what ? ... lol

I noticed in her latter performance of this song, she appeared to have taken out some of the more potentially damaging techniques in it. She appears to have great coaching with longevity in mind. I appreciate your words of caution- I haven't heard as many people give these tips, compared to when Jackie Evancho was starting out- she was absolutely berated by "vocal coaches" and warnings-many not in a good spirit and not motivated by genuine concern.

What witchery is this? Angelina's spell casting has barely begun at this point in her career!!!
I would love to see the less enchanted Julia review both the NGT performances to see the genesis of the phenomena that is Angelina Jordan Astar as well as her later work for which has gained a massive following. Songs I'd love to see your reaction to are: (1) Angelina's audition to NGT, Gloomy Sunday (it stuns me that a child knows the song at that age!) th-cam.com/video/d3gSho9yf88/w-d-xo.html (2) NGT finals Summertime th-cam.com/video/443pBSpx5B4/w-d-xo.html (3) Age 10 singing Feeling Good th-cam.com/video/p8kAL-sGJx8/w-d-xo.html (4) her cover of Bohemian Rhapsody on AGT Champions th-cam.com/video/7gQljxeaNuM/w-d-xo.html (5) finally one of her own compositions Shield th-cam.com/video/lQtUbVKb0vs/w-d-xo.html

Greetings Julia and Kia ora from Kiwiland. Though I have watched a number of reactions for different Angelina pieces I have not found one with such a depth of analysis and comment as yours, hence my subscribing to your reaction channel (I've never commented on a channel before). Never be apologetic about the honesty and detail of your appraisals and comments, thanks, they are fascinating and most appreciated - love them. I have to support Rusty Shackleford's comment entirely. Nice to see in the comments that Angelina did not go doing too much of this style. Love your 'Witchy' dark opening to your channel and your costume, you can curse us all with your singing knowledge anytime - really enlightening info and such a fresh and imaginative approach. Cheers to you Julia!

I love the in depth analysis, and how young singers can suffer from this vocal abuse, and the industry. I think her parents are aware though. She held off from signing any deals (even with all her amazing performances, and Simon pushing), until age 14. Her parents didn't want her used that way. And an occasional, stressful, larynx performance, was allowed ;)

also, is this kid just, like, 50% lungs, or....?
(I had a whole thing here about stuff that you ended up addressing before the video ended. so much for me getting to look insightful and stuff :-D)
also also, is there any mitigation on the tongue-root thing from the fact that English isn't her first language? I don't know much about Norwegian, but IF they use those kind of mechanics while speaking (and thus get used to making them), could that offset the potential badness that you describe?
(sorry, entirely off-topic, but my GOODNESS that's a striking look you've chosen today - I love how Halloween-y it is! Tres chic!)

You have a new subscriber but BEWARE! This is a long comment. I hope you have the patience to read to the end. Thank you for discovering and reacting my favourite singer.
She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to the person who wrote the original, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina is the based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. They may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion in some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured.
She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener.
In this video did you notice:Angelina finishing some notes and handing them to the pianist, who smiled as he read them? They were her wishes (instructions) to the band how she wished therm to play the music. Then a brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, a well known and respected Iranian artist, who is also Angelina's maternal grandmother and the person who encouraged Angelina in her love of music, especially jazz. And then there is a shot of Angelina holding a candle upon which was an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Lastly, did you notice how the "performing" Angelina, singing at a level of maturity far beyond her years, suddenly became a 9-year-old child almost instantaneously once she finished singing. From the time I first heard Angelina, way back at her first audition on Norway's Got Talent, she has amazed me.
My introduction to Angelina was on her first appearance at Norway's Got Talent and I didn't expect much from a 7-year-old. Just a cute little girl, all nervous, rushing the song in parts, hesitating and then stumbling over or forgetting her words and generally acting her age and doing her best to get through a childish song like "Twinkle, twinkle little star". What did I see? Well, it was a seven-year-old child, with wild hair and gaps in her mouth, where there once were baby teeth. And that was when the normal perception ended and things turned upside down. She confidently answered the questions put to her by a Judge. Declared she was going to sing a song by the legendary Billie Holiday. Gestured off-stage for the technician to start the music and then started singing. The body of the 7-year-old was still there but the voice wasn't. Or was it? I was surprised then and that surprise is still with me, some six years later.
I have followed her career since I saw that first video on TH-cam and in the six years she has been singing publicly she has mastered many musical genres, including Blues, Country, Disco, Jazz, Pop, R&B and Soul, EDM and Rock and covered songs first performed by many famous singers, like Adele, Whitney Houston, Nancy and Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Lana del Ray, Avicii, Bill Withers, Gloria Gaynor, Andy Williams, Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong and many others. What is more extraordinary is that she takes ownership of every song she sings while still paying respect to the original. You will notice that she never goes into unnecessary theatrics. Never sings those high or low notes unless they are absolutely necessary. Never projects herself in any performance which says "look how good I am". She just sings the song as she feels it is meant to be sung. And I'll add an even more extraordinary item for you to consider, to show how unique she is. She has the innate ability not only to sing a song as emotionally as the song deserves but to be able to communicate those same emotions to the listener.
As I have noted above, I have been following her career a long time and have listened to every interview she has given and every documentary about her and every performance she has ever given. What stands out for me is how a very shy and humble girl in her normal life, can be transformed into the perfect vehicle for the song she has chosen to sing, once she starts to sing.
Although the gift of singing and all her performances appear to be effortless, Angelina works very hard to ensure that the one she is going to record reflects what she sees as the correct way to meld both lyrics and melody. If you go to th-cam.com/channels/hM_lpT4shdnsez93QMJPig.html you will find many rehearsals where, not only do you get to see her rehearsing but being the "ordinary" girl she is (if indeed one is able to apply that adjective to her). Most of her performances are recorded in her home studio, either with background music or a single guitar. Most are done in one take. She treats the whole thing as a hobby. As we would have said when I was young. "There is no 'side' to her" She is completely transparent to the world.
Perhaps you would like to go back a few years and work forward. By doing so, you will come to the realisation that she is "unique" and I don't use that word loosely. There is truly no other singer who has her versatility and sheer ability to communicate the emotions of a song to her listeners. I doubt there is another singer who works so hard to ensure that, when she sings the song, it is sung in such a way that her listener becomes enmeshed in the emotions
So, here a few recordings for you to consider.

age 10 - Norwegian TV Production: Every time we say goodbye: th-cam.com/video/KRSI8HmTHJA/w-d-xo.html
One thing which several of the new reactors - and those who have returned to her have decided, is to follow her career from the start. If you should decide to do the same, go to Rusty Shackleford's website and look at the list he has compiled of Angelina songs in chronological order.Rusty Shackleford - Chronological order th-cam.com/channels/55am_6Y5-Fj4ri8xOInstA.html

Miss Julia, that was the best and most honest in depth reaction on Angelina's singing ability I have seen to date. And I've been watching reaction video's of her songs for almost a year now. As others have said, this was a "one off" performance style of this song. Because of your background in children singing, I am subscribing to your channel in the hopes that you will do more reactions to Angelina's body of work.
My request would be to start with her Norway's Got Talent songs at age 7 and 8 and hear what you have to say about her singing ability at an even younger age.

"The Angel with Thousand Voices" is what Angelina👣 is called the reason, she never uses the same Voice twice.. Jazz is her preferred Style but she handles every Style and Gendre from any Era and she arranges all her music herself both song and Instrumental, Probably the most Versatile Soul Singer on the Planet today, really at any day past and present, she doesn't cover songs, Angelina Re-coveres the Songs and revitalizes them and makes them current and new.
You will experience that deeper You go into her magic World.. I promise You it's Quite a Journey a diamond mine of Musical Gems 🌟
Thanks for Your Wonderful Reaction and Analysis I surely want to see more of that 😄👍
