She was 9 yo. This is her arrangement. She was in charge of the recording session. She is barefoot; she met a little girl in Asia without shoes. Angelina gave the girl her shoes and performs barefooted as a way to promote taking care of the poor. No one ever talks about how long she held the last note; it is remarkable considering how small she was.

jd It's not the last note, it's entire the last phrase. All in one breath.

At the start, Angelina put up a picture of Screaming Jay Hawkins that she is covering with many of Jay's mannerisms, growling, screaming and grunting. This was one of her best performances at her age or since. What guts it took to select this song that most female singers wouldn't attempt. She is incredible.

AJ is, by all appearances, an empath. It pulled her into jazz and all the emotions.

Children feel as strongly as adults, fear of separation or loss for example. They usually don't have adult words to express these feelings, but if a child has studied an expressive mode, it becomes possible to express some of these emotions. This child has been listening to and studying jazz since about age 2, obsessed with that particular music, mimicking it, retaining it, using it to let out her strong emotions. She warned us by showing the image of the man whose recording of this song she had absorbed, Screamin' Jay Hawkins! (Loved your reactions, details I hadn't heard. Eager for more!)

In order to understand Angelina and how she sings this song, you must go watch Screaming Jay Hawkings video of this song. It’s exaggerated, comical and wild. To a child watching that video may be cartoonish. She is pointing everyone to him on the candle.
😊I also believe her primary language accent gives her that unique word pronunciation. It gives her such a unique sound. I love it.

Angelina is a child prodigy, as was her Grandmother, who was her Influence in to the jazz style of music. She arranges her own music and started singing at 18 mo. Her first time in a studio was at age 6 singing I Who Have Nothing. She competed in Norways Got Talent at 7 and 8. React to the entity of 4 songs. Angelina will be 16 in January so you have plenty of enjoyment ahead. Welcome as another one of her angels.

Dr. Marisan, Angelina practices music for about 36 hours a week since the age of 3, went to the music academy when 4, for technical advise, ans saw a lot of pain, misery, poverty and hate during her younger days when visiting dad in 3rd work countryies. He is an engineer for a international company. Sometime the family lived with him, as in the Middle East, where she met the famous shoeless girl. Angelina said, so I was informed: I write best when feeling pain.
This young highly empathic and genius intelligent woman is also at least 20 years older in mind, than her body. Madan, please stay safe, sound and happy, Sincerely, Elmar from Germany.

One thing is clear to me. Angelina is a MASTER at interpretation of songs and music in general-both technically and emotionally. She GETS it at a high level of comprehension. And she does her homework. That's clear from the candle she holds at the beginning showing the image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the composer and original artist of this song. She is not imitating anyone as such. She matches the emotion and "vibe" of the song with how she sings it. A truly awesome talent.

Angelina wrote the arrangement, the bit where you noted the musicians were in sync with Angelina, was what the musical director was laughing at in shock at the intro of the video; when Angelina presented him with how she wanted the horns to react to that stepped legato line you noted.

I always enjoy watching people that really know what they are talking about analyzing Angelina. She is such a master of her craft. It seems impossible that a 9 year old could be a master of anything, but there it is. It's undeniable. The delicate nuance combined with the raw (yet controlled) power, the unique artistic choices she makes... These are all things that should take decades to perfect, and comes out and makes it look as easy as breathing.

Very nice catch on that inhale screech not to many people realized that witch I believe is better for the vocal cords than a exhale screech,,, but at the same time uncle Michael "probably" said, "you do you this one time but promise me that you won't do it again for a nearly entire song" cuz this performance was never repeated from Angelina,, but i still love her other performances of this Legendary song,,

You can never underestimate Angelina. She will surprise you every time. She based this on the original by Screamin Jay Hawkins 1956. And of course she nailed but more than that I think she made Rock History with the best rendition by a 9 yr old girl ever created. Better even than Screamin Jay himself. IMO.
My vote would go for her recent cover of Elvis 'Suspicious Minds' The power she opens with hits you like a ton of bricks and then it's just pure velvet perfection.

Angelina recorded this a couple of months after her 9th Birthday and she has never sung it like this again, presumably because she was advised to protect her vocal chords. She has sung it several times over the years, but never like this. Some if the techniques she used in this version, I've not seen her use in any later songs. As far as your next reaction to a recent song, my favorite is her cover of the jazz standard, My Funny Valentine, sung by all the Greats. It's the best version I have ever heard, the most beautiful & a Master Class in dynamics & vocal control. th-cam.com/video/ETGLbsGDAI0/w-d-xo.html

I've been following Angelina for about a dozen years now; so long that she seems more like a member of my family that I haven't seen in a while than a typical celebrity. If you were to ask me who my favorite vocalist of all time is, my answer, without hesitation would be Angelina. She is a prodigy...and there is just something about her that is hard to properly express. It is because she is such a wonderful person. Angelina, I believe, is here to change the world. Her voice has the power to heal, and boy does our world need healing.

I was surprised by your lucidity to analyze Angelina. Music is the way of expressing and deliberating emotion, music and emotion concomitant, each one is the reflection of the other. The evolution of emotion is encoded in music,
If you make your cenesthesia resonate with the vibration of your song, you will have the correct emotional expression that the music generated, the state of the composer or singer. Angelina has monstrous intelligence, if you watch a 9 year old express herself and look at Angelina you will notice the difference.
What stands out to me is when she stands on stage and starts singing, she captures people's attention, deep attention, and manages to move people without realizing it, it's a soul-to-soul connection. Angelina gave me the chance to relearn how to listen. I liked listening to Lili Pons,
the timbre of his voice placed me in a very interesting internal space. When I listened to singing, I had the expectation of hearing timbre and height that moved me, people who listen to dimash look for the fireworks that dimash does very well. Angelina is something else, when she starts to sing there is silence inside me, there are no notes anymore,
high lows, long, there is an emotional narration, my emotion derives and draws conclusions, without my intervention. Angelina's soul found a body, emotion and intelligence according to her needs to remind us that as humans we are equal and we participate in the party of life
    =============================

Enhorabuena! You are one of only two or three vocal coaches/analysts to have identified the inhaled note as such. 👍🏼 Angelina has so many unique videos out that it's hard to pick one, but I agree with most of the previous recommendations. her most recent cover of "My Funny Valentine" (this last Valentine's Day) is a master class demonstration of vocal ability. The only problem is that you don't see her singing it, but in my opinion no other song she's done demonstrates so many facets of her voice.

I was just thinking about how Angelina interpreted the lyrics to this classic song. She had said the growls were a way of saying you need to love someone more. I wonder how much she discussed the lyrics with her mom or grandmother. Regardless, Angelina knew how she wanted to perform the song as is evident with the notes she wrote at the beginning of the video. Dr. Marisan, thank you so very much for providing links to the original video and Angelina's Official Channel.
We Angelina angels are proud so many channels have implemented our suggestion to encourage viewers to use those links to help boost the analytics for the artist. So few people read the description and you have great information about your channel there as well. Angelina really in the groove here. The notes that she handed to the musical director were her changes to the musical arrangement - she did a great job with that don't you think? In an interview she explained that the story was about desperate love, she had been so moved by Screamin' Jay Hawkins performances of the song. I like to think that this is the concept version of the song, and very specific to how her body was at the age of 9. Her "business as usual" version that she performed at the age of 11 was a more refined. I think that it's clear to see that Angelina takes her music very seriously, constantly striving to improve and extend her scope and range. Not many young people have such a powerful mission statement...

She's singing her heart out, using every bit of knowledge of her craft to create a cover that honors the original by Screamin' Jay Hawkins (the face on the candle in the beginning). For a more recent example of her genius, I'll recommend an original. Angelina performed a live version of her own composition 7th Heaven live at Kongsberg this summer. Thank you so much for your wonderful and excellent analysis of Angelina's magnificent cover of " I Put A Spell On You " This video started me off on the Angelina Jordan journey so many years ago ! We have watched this talented child from the age of 6 to now at almost 17 and have been a part of her remarkable evolution as a truly unique and captivating young artist ! Angelina is able to bring a new fresh take on all of her covers she performs ! About 175 and counting ! Her strong jazz influenced background from the age of two gives her vocals such a dynamic sound and adds so much to the songs she chooses ! She is an old soul who loves to sing classic jazz and older classic songs ! Not many singers especially her age are even attempting to sing these wonderful melodies ! Her audience you will find ranges from young children to older adults who marvel at her musical skills ! She is a humble, sincere, loving and compassionate soul ! Well protected by her family and Republic Records who allow her to grow and develop at her own pace ! I would suggest "My Funny Valentine" video that she realised earlier this year at 16 years old ! Unfortunately you won't see her sing it but it is visually appealing and her vocals will take you on a journey back to the fifties ! Her recent cover of Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds " is an artistic and visual masterpiece ! She takes this song in a whole new direction ! You'll really enjoy her spin in it ! I also would suggest her cover of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing " studio version as it is absolutely a beautiful tribute to Whitney and a vocal splendor by Angelina ! I want to thank you for your most heartfelt and wonderful commentary as they are so appreciated ! Please keep posting our Barefoot Princess ! Sending you much love from Canada ! 👍🤗🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️❤️❤️

Just a couple comments, even though I have a few dozen that I want to mention. Angelina takes her music very seriously. Even at 9 as you heard today, she’s not showing off-she being true to the genre. Close your eyes and you’re getting authentic old school blues that you could include in any jazz anthology. Her timing, her vocals, her grit, her sass all fit the genre. At some point, watch Angelina at 13 covering Etta James’s I’d Rather Go Blind-and listen to astonishing 1960’s soul that will blow you away like this one did. Angelina does not recreate genres, she inhabits them by studying her musical history and by her incredible ear and timing.
Secondly, you listened twice to Angelina’s great phrasing and intonation of the line “Hey, hey, hey, hey-what’s up.” Not only does that add variety and interest, but it is a direct nod to the song’s famous heritage where Screamin Jay Hawkins laughs demonically with that phrase. Angelina keeps the intent, but flows it beautifully into the overall performance. If you want to see Angelina today, try “Suspicious Minds” to see a 180 degree reversal of I Put a Spell on You. Angelina is absolutely mesmerizing and absolutely unique.

@@714cjp I’ve gone back and forth on this. I used to think she was saying “watch out”, but when I ask my iPad to display the lyrics, it reads “what’s up”. I know the lyrics shown on a computer aren’t accurate, but I also saw a couple reactors saying it was “what’s up”-so I thought that was it. But I think you’re right. I’ll go back to my original thinking that she’s saying “watch out”.

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the members of the same band at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and gives them some instructions. There are English subtitles as the spoken language is Norwegian: th-cam.com/video/SAkZDAXJA4E/w-d-xo.html

The handwritten note was the words of the song and the way of singing them, that’s why the guy laughed ( not at all the nad leader but the studio engineer). Angelina was not able to write any music at this age, it is a myth. I am a genuine fan but she barely can plays guitar and piano by now (ask a pro looking at her video when playing). She don’t need to be idealize to be the best :-)

Really enjoyed the reaction. Just as an FYI, that ascending "Hey, hey, hey, hey, Watch out" is taken directly from the Screaming Jay Hawkins original.

I'm sure someone else has probably said this already, but you really should compare what Angelina is doing here to what Screamin' Jay Hawkins would do when he performed the song live (pretty much everything she's doing here is based on him). The easiest way to do that is to watch the "closing credits" of a reaction compilation video called "I Put a Spell on You - Angelina Jordan Reaction - Every Reaction Ever", by PO Talks. He cuts back and forth between key moments in a c. 1990 live performance by Hawkins and the corresponding moments from Angelina's video, and the comparison makes this performance even more impressive, IMHO. She's taking all the over-the-top things he would do and modifying them to fit more seemlessly into the flow of the song - making them "more musical", as I like to put it. An amazing accomplishment for a 9-year-old.
BTW, the only way to really understand how she could do this at this age is to continue to go back to earlier performances by her. By the time she recorded this music video, she had been "in the public eye" (singing on TV and in live appearances) for about a year (measuring from when her "Gloomy Sunday" audtition on _Norske Talenter_ aired on TV and went viral online). And she had been singing "seriously" (beyond informal performances for friends and family) for at least a couple of years. And, of course, that singing "for friends and family" goes all the way back to when she was 1½ and she surprised her mother by singing along with Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You". (I say "of course" because I *know* you've been told about that many times. But have you actually seen it? Look for the video called "Angelina Jordan - News feature in Norwegian TV2 from 2014 (eng sub)" posted by Yozhik v Tumane [turn on English "CC" captions to understand the Norwegian narration]. The relevant clip occurs 1 min 52 sec into the video. You probably shouldn't watch the rest of it until after you've seen her "Gloomy Sunday" audition.)

Fascinating reaction: so far as we know she never repeated this "beast-mode" style... every other recording of her singing I Put a Spell on You (and there are several) is rather different... I assume someone warned her about the potential detrimental effect on her vocal chords... But this will stand as a record of her amazing ability - both vocal and musical in coming up with the arrangement.

I know one coach, don't remember who, said her vocal chords would definitely get damaged very quickly because of her age. Everything in that throat is growing and too fragile to exert so much stress on it. As you say, I'm sure someone warned her.

Even at 9 years old she has already been in the studios for 3 years and has already won Norways got talent has already sang in front of 40,000 people for a benefit concert, has already sang on TV in the United States and she dies her own arrangements and that's what the notes are for that she hands to the band director is the changes and things she wants hilighted... she has liston to all this old-school music and she study how the original singers do things and makes things her own along with rewriting lyrics to be age appropriate for what ever age she might be,, (one of her mothers rules)

I just double checked on Google and yes you do remind me of a young Grace Slick,,, it was your eyes and the shape of your smile that got me thinking about that.
And speaking of Grace Slick and considering Angelina Jordan vocals, I would die if she ever did a cover of White Rabbit (a Jefferson Airplane classic from the '70s or was it the 1960s) That song fits her voice perfectly and it would be a great warm up song for any concert to get her voice ready for the rest of the show....

You really get it, Dr. Marisan - a mix of both analysis, expertise and pure fandom. You are such a pleasure to spend time with.
IN the beginning of the song - you can see her 'directing' the music with her right hand - both the main beat and the pickup beat. Clearly, Angelina Jordan understands this as music though as you suggest, an 8 year old otherwise would not understand the emotion inside the lyrics.
There is so much I look forward to watching 'with' you and if I may suggest, some of the singers in Postmodern Jukebox is a good place to explore.

How Angelina knows to do the things she does is a question (like Screwtape told Wormwood) we have our best people working on. And like Screwtape, an answer isn't really expected too soon as the source appears to be divine! Here it seems clear she was very familiar with the Screamin Jay Hawkins original and artistically crafted her rendition therefrom. "Screamin" Jay Hawkins original "I Put A Spell on You" th-cam.com/video/orNpH6iyokI/w-d-xo.html
Next song choice would be her recent Suspicious Minds cover (if you haven't reacted to it) or anything from her Summer 2022 live concerts in Norway. Lots to choose from there.

Angie's greatest ability is to imitate the stars. Ella as in her version of Summertime, also Billie Holiday, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Frank Sinatra, on and on. She has only had fundamental guidance, all the advanced stuff is her own doing. That's what brilliant singers do, she has natural ability absorbing music. Basically naturally she's a better singer than any teacher or coach because that's what prodigies do.

Fascinating is an understatement... I haven't heard it mentioned before, but if you look carefully in that moment where she goes "Hey, hey, hey, HEY! Whats Up! She looks at and winks at precisely the right time to the musicians. So the question I have is did she purposely wink or did it come completely naturally like the rest of her performance, or was it just a fluke?... What 9 year old would think to wink at the precise moment? She is so incredible and beyond my comprehension.
