At only a few seconds in you already said "there's so much to talk about". Just from a couple of lines Angelina can give you lots to analyze. She packs so much detail into every word. ...and somehow manages to never overdo it. She does a lot with a lyric, but every detail seems to have a purpose. Her phrasing and timing are just genius. You asked how much say Angelina has... she has said that she does all her arrangements herself, and many band members she has worked with (including some world class legends) have been blown away by her musical intelligence. Her album is releasing very soon! Get ready world, here she comes!

You should just feel free to stop whenever you want!! I mean, you were opening a GIFT that had so much to unpack, you loved everything you got! Your joy and excitement were palpable and contagious 🎉🎉. Angelina was just having the time if her life, living a dream come true, completely immersed in the moment, using every vocal ornament and technique freely, spontaneously because SHE CAN!! Singing her heart out, unabatedly being FREE!! And so, you listen to whatever parts you want to over again, stop when Angelina makes your heart skip a beat with her PRODIGY talent...(you have a great voice, BTW). We Angels can relate to the emotions she lavishes on her renditions, because she kindles the same in us all.. can't wait till you share more of the same!! So, see you on the flipside, RIGHT???

Nina, thanks for this wonderful and amazed (it's normal to happen!) reaction, this song is one of the important steps to understand the singularity of Angelina's talent. It's unreal like her, from a very young person, she choice to use her incredible passion and understanding through music in a splendid way, especially for these legendary songs. She is definitely the only 9-year-old girl who understands and has the courage and the ability to sing this song from Screaming' Jay, so imbued with his power, and reorganize it according to her musical sensibility and vision (her written notes that she has on the lectern and which she also gives to the band director at the beginning of the video). I sincerely believe that this it's the most beautiful version of this song, over 60 years since it was written and there are much of versions of it, also sung by great singers. 💛🧡❤

Did you notice how she used two different styles of vibrato at the end (the a cappella part) when she sang, "I don't caaaare…"? In the first half of the word "care", she is using her typical slow, wide vibrato, and then in the second half switches to a quicker, tighter, somewhat "choppier" version. Later she would develop an even quicker vibrato that she used at the beginning of her "Heal the World" cover (a quick nod to Michael Jackson's vocal style right off the bat), and then went even further with it in her most recent covers (studio and live) of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" last year (especially the final "held" note at the end of her lilve performance at _Allsang på Grensen_ - all of the things I'm referring to are on her Official channel, BTW). I'm no vocal expert, but I'd imagine it's harder to alter your natural vibrato (epsecially in multiple different ways) than, say, the timbre of your voice. Thoughts?

I figure I must have watched this 500 times by now.. and it never get's tiring. It helps of course that watching first time reactor's faces is priceless. As for the arrangement, she has complete control over her own arrangement, but she does have input on the Band's as well. There is actually a Video out there showing her working with this same band on a different song "Portrait of a Child". But over all I think the instrumentation is a group effort.

Yes. Aged 9. Simply amazing. The written notes you see her handing to the band were her instructions about how she wanted the arrangement to go. This band, and others working with her in these early days / years, used to ( affectionately ) call her 'The Boss', mostly because of her musical intelligence and her already clearly developed vision of how she wanted her Covers to be performed.

Thank you Nina. If you know Screaming Jay Hawkings' original (I'm sure you do), you will know how wild it is. Angelina has packaged that wildness into a jazzy, sassy, tour de force of a musical performance that brings in so many references. The Middle-Eastern touch in the final section and the nod to Hawkings' operatic training, for example. That last note was 14 full seconds of beautifully sustained vibrato. And at the end, you can see her thinking, 'Not bad, but ... ' Pure genius, cannot be explained.

Fabulous reaction Nina ! This is the song that set most vocal coaches , reactors and first time listeners on the Angelina Jordan journey and into the rabbit hole as we say ! This was an epic performance by a 9 year old who by the way arranged the song with the band on exactly how she wanted certain things done ! They call her the boss and rightly so ! Angelina's sense of musical arrangements and vocal composition is off the charts at this age and has continued to this day ! She has a true sense of who she is and what she wants to accomplish in her songs ! It's totally uncanny and I believe she is a prodigy of music ! So much to talk about this performance even though she is a child she manages to convey a professionally delivered performance so naturally ! She is fearless, sincere and passionate about her music and it's unbelievable to see this magnificent result ! I want to thank you personally for continuing your Angelina Jordan journey. I know you've done NGT and this (which is really her most amazing of them all) you really should check out the song just prior to all of those you've done, that being AJ at 6 years old in her first studio appearance singing, "I (Who Have Nothing)". I suspect it was a warm up for her family to see if they thought she was ready for what was to come, so they presented her with a studio for the first time. Watching her almost immediately move from apprehensiveness with the first line to the joy of actually jumping up and down and smiling gleefully at the end of the second, indicating that she realized she had nothing to fear, is a fascinating sight. A few lines later and she's actually giving a thumbs up to her family indicating 'she's got it!" You'd be remiss if you don't do that before your moving up in the years.

The musicians knew when she began to sing (at the latest) who she was. She was their national treasure and renown genius of musical instinct and they nicknamed her very lovingly THE BOSS. You saw her in the beginning writing the final arrangements, gave it to the bandleader with a humble "those are my wishes". You saw his reaction. From her sound booth she directed the whole thing.

Angelina Jordan holds up a picture of Screamin Jay Hawkins. He is the one who wrote the original song. The question is how can a nine-year-old little girl be able to convey a song of this maturity to bring out emotions that she has never experienced? I enjoy watching people experience this song for the first time. Angelina Jordan has Put a Spell on everyone. With her amazing voice and control over any song that she sings is amazing. Angelina doing what she does. Taking an iconic song, rearranging it herself, giving us absolute authenticity for the genre, and killing, murdering the performance. At 9 years old. Easily one of my favorite videos of all time. This is not just great singing for a kid. It’s great singing that could be included on any collection of old school blues. We’re so blown away by everything she does here that it’s hard to give special attention to individual skills, but her timing with that live band is immaculate. She rides that beat fluidly and effortlessly like she’s been singing in jazz clubs for decades.
She will surprise you again and again, just like today-and you haven’t even heard her older performances. Maybe stick with some more jazzy singing and move on to 10 year old Angelina covering “Feelin Good”. It is, again, one of the best, most original, covers of that classic you’ll ever hear regardless of age-by the best singer I’ve ever heard. There are two different live performances, at 10, that will blow you away. Here’s a link to Angelina with a full band behind her: th-cam.com/video/p8kAL-sGJx8/w-d-xo.html

THAT is a reaction! Love to see someone with the know like you have Nina watch this, it is very educating :) I think anyone with some talent for listening, and I mean really LISTENING to music will recognize how great Angelina is. All successful musicians will have this talent. A lot of people that for various reasons do not sing or play an instrument will have this listening talent. I think she will be the most loved singer of her time. ❤❤
I think Angelina is the singer's singer. By that I mean that she employs so many different techniques, dynamics and ornaments in her performances that you would need to know a bit about singing to appreciate it. Angelina always does it so tasteful too, never overcooked. As you hear more of her you'll find that she adapts her style to the message and style of each song she does. From the top of my head, she's done Jazz (she's the QUEEN of jazz!), blues, soul, country, folk, RDM, pop, rhytm'n'blues, and even a smidge of rap.
    Cheers Nina that was fun!

Thanks, Nina! Shocking to say the least! In the beginning you saw the musical director handed a sheet of paper. It contained changes Angelina wanted the band to make before recording the video. Yes, she began rearranging classic songs already from when she was 9. An analogy I could make about listening to her is when our mom's were stewing a bowl of soup on the stove and when no one was looking we would get a piece of bread or just a soup spoon and dip in into the pot to taste the soup. We would swallow it and think, "My goodness, this is delicious! How does mom do it?" Nina, all of us fit into that category but, Nina, folks like you are like chefs in my story and not only do you love the taste of the soup but you can taste the hints of rosemary, and garlic, and parsley, and sweet onions, etc., you get the idea. Nina, I always point out to everyone when you watch it again keep looking at the VERY END because what Angelina does is she lifts up her right arm and rests it on a ledge and she looks straight ahead pondering if it was alright or could she have done it better. She's amazing.

    My thoughts on this performance.
I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. We get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point.
Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 17 years old... That is unfathomable. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her.

You just watched a Masterpiece! Destined to go down in Music History as the best performance by a 9 yr old, Period! Past, present & dare I say Future! I'd like to see anyone, young or old who can do a cover of this & with the justice it deserves as Angelina has done on every cover she does. ♥👣👸🏻

Terrific reaction. Our ability to watch AJ grow from a tiny six year old to the statuesque seventeen year old that she has become together with the anticipation of future greatness makes her whole story compelling.
I love that you are exploring her early years. There are many choices between 8 years old and 10 years old. One of my favorites is "Feeling Good", th-cam.com/video/p8kAL-sGJx8/w-d-xo.html.

So glad to see you enjoying this one! I just puts a perma-grin on your face, doesn't it? It is bewilderingly good. So much so, that it is difficult to focus on any one thing because there are so many and they are connected. Our minds work at the level of arithmetic, maybe algebra, and here we watch her doing Fourier transformations on the fly. It truly is a thing of wonder to behold.

As the 8 year and 4 months old Angelina blew us all away with her winning performance of "Summertime", what evolvement should we expect during the next 6 - 8 months from this child. An amazingly gifted child, but still; - a child. Well as she "fell in to" study of the music from "Screamin`Jay Hawkin", I guess we see the result just here. As Angelina goes straight to the main source, she make sure to pick up on the intentions and the soul of a song. Even for this one. Hawkin`s performance -s for sure are super theatrical and funny, and even a bit sceary I would think, to a young girl at 8 - 9 yo.
Angelina BTW obviously had a great time watching and analysing his song, though even never ment for a child anyway. Angelina still is abel to go behind all the sceary stuff, all the smoke and firworks, and she uncover the song behind it all. What it is all about. And she gives it her heart.
I guess I`ve seen and heard this performance at least half a thousand times during these last 7 years since release, and still I only enjoy it more and more, as I understand less and less about how she possibly could bring such a performance to life at all, at her age. I dear say, no adult person would even seriously ever initiate such a performance for this angel of music and humanity. Would they?? This is the soul-work of Angelina`s musical mind and her immensly gift, her instrument, her voice-tool.

Hello Nina, with 9 years already a masterpiece of singing. Here you can, you have to, enjoy every second.
    You like Angelina's lower range?
    - How great thou art 13 years old - th-cam.com/video/WLAEy1LIHrc/w-d-xo.html - well known by Elvis
And the following song is also extraordinary:
    - I’d rather go blind 12 years old - th-cam.com/video/pK8mMXQb3_I/w-d-xo.html - Angelina on a sofa testing a new microphone, Etta James cover
Thank you for this great reaction and

We've been waiting for this one, and you did not disappoint! To me, this is how the song was meant to be sung, even including the original by "Screamin" Jay. He had intended to sing this as a love song/ballad, but on the night of the original recording he and the band got pretty drunk at the studio and "Screamin Jay" was born.

I highly recommend that you watch the original by Screamin Jay Hawkins in 1956 from which AJ bases this interpretation of her own as all her covers are her own arrangements. What she wrote at the start are her own notes on the arrangement. I call AJ the Mozart of the voice.

Yes this definitely was a statement piece. This was Angelina saying that I'm more than just a child singer. The musical intelligence that she possessed at such an early age is quite simply mind blowing. Her keen sense of phrasing probably came from the study of all the jazz greats from a very early age. I believe she was 3 years old when she starting searching through TH-cam for her inspirations.

A very interesting analysis, Nina, outside of the typical attempt to technically analyze something inexplicable. It's like seeing a Botticelli, a Velázquez or a Turner watercolor and trying to analyze them by explaining how they hold the brush or move their wrist, absurd, beauty is felt, it fills your soul, it cannot be explained. No one, in the entire history of music, has sung like this at the age of 9, this video should be a compulsory subject in all singing schools.

Others have pointed out that Angelina was making changes at the first ... you see her writing down them .. and the band director smiling at the notes. I am 'told' that she arranged this herself. Shrug. I really think that when Prodigy is used for her .. that in this case it is correct.

I just realized I've only commented on this video on Patreon. :) I'll take this occasion to point out the fabulous tenor sax solo that serves as the perfect foil to Angelina's performance. Norway has a strong jazz tradition. Suffice it to aay that the band keeps up with AJ every step of the way. One other thing you may have missed: Angelina is modifying her vibrato several times during her performance. A couple examples: 1) right after the sax solo, on the word "do", her vibrato is a minor third wide; 2) in the rubato section at the end, on "I don't care," Angelina changes the tempo of the vibrato to make her downward swoop more exciting. Great reaction, Nina!

Awesome reaction and breakdown to an Epic Performance! She had been working with this band by this time for some time. They know she knows what she wants on arrangements for each instrument and respects her wants and were at this time referring to her as Boss. When she was on NGT one of the Judges happened to stop by during the rehearsal of "Bang Bang" and at just turning 8 was giving direction to the base player and at that time knew she was the real deal. Check out "I'd Rather Go Blind", another jaw dropping performance. The crazy thing about this one, she is 12, but wasn't released until age 13, she is sitting down and leaning forward. Keep that in mind as you listen to it, especially near the end of the song. She does so many musical acrobats and doesn't take a breath for 15.3 seconds and a little one at that. Enjoy, looking forward to the reaction to "I'd Rather Go Blind", God Bless!

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with the same band at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. There are English subtitles as the spoken language is Norwegian: th-cam.com/video/SAkZDAXJA4E/w-d-xo.html

Thank you for featuring Angelina again, I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on TH-cam, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener.
Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original.
There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below,
    (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
    (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
    (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
    (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player.
    (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
    (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted.
    (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song.
    (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time.
    (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word
    (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
    (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying.
    (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella!
Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

Thanks for another great reaction to & appreciation of Angelina's epic performance of this Screamin' Jay Hawkins 1950's classic (which she also produced) - at age 9. Even at this young age, the band members affectionately referred to Angelina as "The Boss". Highly recommend a couple of other Angelina gems between her winning AGT & this performance: What A Difference A Day Makes (performed outdoors at a Norwegian summer music festival) & her USA debut singing Fly Me To The Moon (on The View). Also at 9 years old Angelina released a book (making her the youngest published author in Norway). And around that time she had an interview with Anne Lindmo, NRK TV where Angelina reads from her diary (when she was 6) & explains why - to this day - she always sings barefoot. IMHO - as great a singer as Angelina is, she's even a better person. Thank you. And may GOD continue to watch over & bless Angelina Jordan.

If you want a progressiv view then you need to go back to the NGT year:
"What a difference a day makes" from "Allsang på grensen" (Singalong on the boarder to Sweden). It is made one month after she won NGT.
"Fly me to the moon" from The View on american TV 3 months after she won NGT.
Then you may look at AJ performing for the Nobel Peace price laureates from desember 2014.
And there are also some TV performances at Christmas time.

Thanks for another fantastic reaction with so many passionate and informed comments. I would be happy if you stopped to explain what you hear in every syllable. I think you could have watched it over again at least three times before getting to the point of not stopping and then appreciating the entire composition as a whole. I would be right there with you for the entire journey. (Heck, make a Part 2 reaction.)
A bit of historical writing on this song says Hawkins wrote it as a love song but influences from the producer turned it in to a theatrical phenomenon that Hawkins reproduced and exaggerated during years, if not decades, of live performances. I feel that Angelina read about this and turned the arrangement back, more like the original intention, while also also embracing Hawkins originally released version. An absolute genius prodigy.
I hear at least two rates of vibrato, if not three or more. (How many accomplished adults can achieve that?)

I have a song by Angelina that I really, really would love for you to do a reaction. She was still 10 years old when she did the song. Baby Fuzz wrote the song and wanted Angelina to sing the song before he released it, is my understanding. Angelina did an outstanding rendition of, I'm Still Holding Out for You, but her family wouldn't allow its official release because of thematic issues. The song was leaked and its title on her video is "Leaked", but you get the song by its actual name. Please react to Angelina's recital of I'm Still Holding Out for You. You'll be glad you did.
