Only this 9 year-old girl has captured the essence of this song. Check out all the other versions. This is the absolute best cover of this iconic song. Screaming Jay Hawkins would be proud.
This is one of the very obvious proof that she is a musical savant. She does her own arrangements and knows how she wants each instrument to sound. She's extraordinary. Since she was TWO years old (truly) she was very seriously playing with listening over and over to any artist that she liked and teaching herself how to make the Bea
Angelina stole the show with her singing. This band doesn't get enough credit. They were amazing. Together with Angelina they made a perfect performance.
I spent over a decade as a recording engineer doing everything from jazz to classical to R&B to rock and when I saw this video of Angelina's performance the first word that came to my mind was, Fearless.
She channeled Screaming Jay Hawkins, the original artist. Hence, the candle with his photo. If you don't know Hawkins, have a listen and then you'll understand that it's not so much about AJ's progression, but her vocal ability to serve the music, to feel and interpret it. Her range and musical intelligence are both beyond her years and outside most people's imagination, tricked by lineair thinking. 99,9999% of adult singers can't pull off what she did with this performance at 9.
I agree. I think of her as a SongRighter. "Channeling" Hawkins' original (not the TH-cam videos where he's cartoon'd it to the max, trying to be as outrageous as TV limits allowed since this was always his only shot at fame) but she has vocal tools that Jay didn't have. But this is probably, in his mind, what his version would have sounded like.
exactly, it takes nothing away from Angelina, but people go on about the weird creativity in the performance, but it is direct from Jay Hawkins. Her vocals are beyond any compliment I can give her, but the real compliment for me is that this young girl (who even at this stage had been a dedicated Billie Holiday fan for years!) would have Screaming Jay in her itinerary. My mother knows who he was but I dont think I ever talked to anyone who know him. This tiny thing from Norway obviously digs him. This impresses me every bit as much as her vocals. - all should check out some of the classic performances he does of this song.
@@ericallen774 I can't find any 'classic' performances but - well, I haven't searched in the last two years. The only videos I see are of his cartoon-performances from the '80s and beyond, where he understood he had one and only one chance to become recognizable, and he had to go way over the top in both vocals and performance. I listen to his original recording - which includes those loose-throated drunken-why-not? moments. I think that's a pretty great version and this is the one that I HOPE AJ discovered and listened to, not those cartoon clip.
When I and my siblings and friends were kids we screamed yelled and made the weirdest ones we could. And I sang with my mother and sister . No problems.!
This is the only time she used her vocals in this way. This was a one and done masterpiece of a tribute to Screaming Jay Hawkins the father of Shock Rock... by a nine year old.
very important observation. she does all this vocal "play" because it is needed to interpret this very unusual song. not because it is fun or for showing off. That is more impressive to me than her actual ability to make these sounds. She always do just what is technically needed to bring out the emotion she feels.
ANGELINA was advised not to perform in this manner again as it may do damage to her young vocal cords , she did take that advice, as she never performed that song in that same manner again.
Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old. At this point in time, she was allready a superstar in Scandinavia and Asia. Also she was the national treasure of Norway, fact. Funfact is, so the musicians later told it. They didn´t know who she was, when entering the studio. We have to assume (yes, I know) that she introduced herself with her normal "every day" name. But as this guy told, the moment she began to sing, they had no doubt, who she was. You can see, how concentrated they were. They wanted to be the best for their national treasure. Stay safe, German Greetings
@@mrstlu4838 I suspected that, Thank you Lady, very much. I suspect he had his privat laugh, when his collegues discovered who they worked with. I studied the faces of the musicians in the video, esp. the bass player. First he is smirking, the next time, we see him, he is playing his heart out🤗. Lady, stay safe and healthy. German Greeting.
@@elmarwinkler6335 It is always fascinating to watch the musicians around her. I think it was the piano player (also played for her later at the Lindmo show), who gave that interview. He is an award winning jazz pianist. These musicians were first class. Stay safe and healthy yourself, Elmar, English/Norwegian greetings, Turid
I'm not a music expert, but as an Angelina fan I understand that what she does here is not improvised, like a child's play, but is designed by her. She is the one who arranges the music of Jay Hawkins, which she shows at the beginning in the photo on the mug. Singer who gave birth to the screamed-theatrical genre. This performance is a tribute to him. Angelina here has created a work of art that will remain in the history books regardless of the age she made it. Angelina was not a normal child and she is not a normal artist: she IS A GENIUS! The best description of Angelina was given by an Italian reactor: "Angelina was already born a butterfly and over the years she has perfected and added colors to her wings".
Not bad for a 9 year old. Take a fifties song by Screaming Jay Hawkins, arrange the music and then sing like a 40 year old jazz singer. This girl is a gift to us all. Welcome to Angelina's world.
From about age 10 Angelina has sounded just like an adult, and her musical expression is mature. Listen to anything from 10 onwards and you wouldn't know it was a child singing. She's just not like other child singers. I guess that's because she's really an artist, like her grandmother, and creates performances rather than simply singing songs.
The remarkable facet of Angelina's singing, to me at least, is her emotional authenticity no matter what she sings. This is hands-down my favorite performance of hers. I know she's caring for her developing voice right now, but I'm waiting for the day when she can unleash like this again.
❤ I agree, and if she can do something wild and wonderful and so expressive like this again, I hope it will be a song that she writes herself. Her ability to get to the heart of the lyrics and transfer the soul of the song through her interpretation of the melody and words is also what ought me in NGT and ever since.
When I first saw this remarkable video, I stopped thinking of Angelina as a 'child singer'. It just didn't apply anymore. If you want to be blown away again, please check out her Norway's Got Talent performances of classic jazz songs. When yo realize where she started from, you can't e surprised at how good she becomes.😎
*I'm sorry, but Angelina was unlike any other child at this age. She's a one-off special child. We hear thousands of kids singing and none of them, and I mean none of them, could/can do what Angelina was capable of at her age. There's a very good reason she won Norway Got Talent at the age of 7/8.*
You can see her at under 2 years old with a Mike. In the studio at 6 reading lyrics in a foreign language ( english) her first being Norwegian. Or she published a book at 9 about why she performs barefooted. In an interview she reads from her diary, she has written from a very young age encouraged by her grandma a famous artist and poet. I believe it is a combination of her intelligence, empathy and her musical precosity that allow her to sing songs such as Stay and carry all the longing and feeling that a preteen could not have possibly felt yet.
I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. Well perhaps here she was playing but the pro in her kept it on Track for the most stunning, amazing performance as a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Generations and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Any one discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point. Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will alway be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 16 years old... That is unfathomable!... Oh Lord... what is coming the world is not prepared for but we as fans have been on the edge of our seats and will remain there as we wait. No hurry. We want Angelina to do it her way when she is ready. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her. We know Angelina will continue to amaze! We will be here to experience and cherish it for as long as we live.... and I am praying for many more years for myself to enjoy it till the end of my days... Not to be morbid but when I'm lying in my deathbed I hope to go out of this world listening to the most beautiful voice ever created for man just as Angelina came into it to fulfill her purpose, what she was put on earth to do, sing for the whole World... and Me! To me Angelina is always singing to me transporting me to that beautiful place she inhabits when she sings and to experience it with her. She has the ability to touch hearts and souls and change lives. She has the ability to change lives on a personal level and the power to change lives on a global scale. To me no one compares.
She was born a professional Singer she can sing anything and she puts so much passion in each song. You feel it every time with every song most singers can't do that . They are great singers but they don't make you feel the song like she does. That's why she is in a world of her own . Now she only 16 wright now who knows what we have in store for us. Now that said we might see someone new pop up in our future but I don't see someone That can do any better. God bless
I have been waiting for you to see this one! While Bohemeian shows how Angelina has grown vocally, this one shows how her artistry has seemingly just always been there. She makes so many unique decisions throughout this song. It's hard to imagine using the words "soulful, bluesy artistry" when tlaking about a 9 yesr old, but there it is.
HEY RUSTY, I'VE WATCHED ABOUT A THOUSAND REVIEWS OF THIS SONG 🎵 AND ANGELINA KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER, AND I AM SLOWLY GETTING MY HEAD AROUND ALL THE MANY MANY LEVELS OF PURE GENIUS SHE DEMONSTRATES FOR ALL TIME, WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT IT NOW, AFTER SO MANY YEARS SINCE SHE RECORDED IT ??? P.S. WE SHOULD ALL START REFERING TO THIS MASTERPIECE AS "THE GRAMMYS BIGGEST MISTAKE" FOR NOT RECOGNIZING THIS !!!
I strongly disagree, what unique decisions did she make? She is just a kid here so her performance was written by an adult and she was told how to act and sing, plus add a post production and sound editing on top of that. The only decision she made here is to sing barefoot because she is not earning enough of her music to buy shoes 👟
I hope you are doing well Rusty and that your wonderful record keeping and support of Angelina, and consequently her Angels, be always appreciated and supported! I always look for your comments, but when there are over a thousand… oh boy. Is there a way to search for commenters? That would be a blessing if one could also remove those who are just being … well, you know what I mean. Anyway, Thank you!!!
She was infused and definitely influenced by jazz from the age of one and half ! She is so sincere ,passionate and dedicated to her singing from a very young age ! Her early covers are mind blowing because she is able to manipulate her voice to mimic and cover these great artists ! She is truly an excellent student of music and is a great listener that makes her able to do what she does at this age ! She directed the band in this video and arranged the song the way she wanted it produced ! The band members referred to her as the boss ! The most astounding thing to witness is the visual vs this girl singing this style of music ! What 9 year old sings jazz like this ??? Her early rendition in her first studio recording of "I Who Have Nothing " is unbelievable at the age of six ! I suggest you listen to it because she is so competent ,fearless and delivers the song so well ! The video was shot by her grandmother and the comments at the end were so good ! Thank you so much for reacting to Angelina and your expert analysis was spot on ! Her rendition of " My Funny Valentine " now at sixteen will show you the full maturity that she has developed from that early age ! Keep posting and sending you much thanks and love from Canada ! 🤗👍🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️❤️❤️
Angelina having fun. Once you watch a handful of her earlier performances, it is easy to tell Angelina doesn't force anything, her vocals just flow with no tension in her body. Bethany, I would recommend you react to a few of her early covers of jazz standards. I prefer her versions over those by the greats from decades past. "What a Difference a Day Makes" when she was 8 years old is a great example. Angelina Jordan is here to inspire us to be the best we can, to appreciate the beauty of life and music. It warms my heart to know Angelina's goal is to bring peace and love to the world through her music. I want to pay it forward, and support and promote her so that she will be able to use her platform to heal. Although you did a wonderful job highlighting Angelina, I suggest you educate your viewers since most don't know how to support you or the artists! Provide links to artists' original videos, official channels, and possibly social media. Encourage them to like and comment on the original video and subscribe to artists' and your channels, This should increase subscriptions for both. I am proud nearly 200 reactors have benefited from joining this effort.
Bethany, another impressive analysis. You're right -- listening first to a more mature AJ ("Bohemian Rhapsody") gives such good perspective on her development. She still has the same instincts and native understanding of what she sings that she had as a child, but, almost uniquely, AJ has managed her voice through childhood and into (young) adulthood like no one else I can think of since Michael Jackson. MJ was a musical genius from the beginning; so is AJ. But the ability to refine that prodigy talent into mature talent is so, so rare. Her appearance on America's Got Talent was very well timed (I guarantee that Simon Cowell had been after AJ for years before her appearance, which her family agreed to on the condition that she would not be required to sign a contract with him regardless of the outcome), and signaled her transition from jazz into jazzy rock and pop. She gained an entirely new audience, who then when went to TH-cam and were astounded by all her earlier performances, particularly this one, which meant immediate saturation and AJ bingeing because she had put up so much content. Her loyal fan base was ecstatic. "Bohemian Rhapsody" was so brilliantly arranged and performed that it seemed to justify everything that came before it. Reactors came from everywhere, and they had plenty to react to. Looking forward to more AJ reactions from you! Maybe transition back to something more recent, like her cover of Adele's "Easy on Me."
Her Jazzy Album.. it's Magic with the Norwegian military Big Band raised into high ranking a lot of time in the iTunes selling Chart after her performances at AGT 👍💕
Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based after listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight on how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with the same band at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and gives them some instructions. There are English subtitles as the spoken language is Norwegian: th-cam.com/video/SAkZDAXJA4E/w-d-xo.html
She isnt really giving them instructions in that video, mostly correcting herself and communicating this to the band. Still super self aware at that age and admirable.
Great reaction, Angelina has been arranging her songs since she was 8 , in Bohemian rhapsody many people forget that even in that she’s only 13 , her octave range is A solid 2, but in some instances make people think she has a 4 ( I have nothing ) Whitney Houston’s octave range was 5 however she was 27 years old, Angelina’s range is still growing, she’s now only 16, and if you heard her latest My Funny Valentine you would think she peaked, she still has another 10 years before her voice is fully developed. At sixteen she can do things with her voice most seasoned singers aren’t able to do.
@@103mrgthank you for your info was going by what google put her at, maybe they evaluated her when she was younger. At any rate I still think she is one of the best singers out there today even at sweet sixteen .
Please consider doing a double reaction of "My Funny Valentine" 1st when Angelina was 10, just sitting on a chair at home, and then from this past February (16). The progression of her talent is just mind blowing!
Seeing as how you've only listened to two songs by Angelina you haven't even got your toe wet yet. If you continue to listen to her nearly 200 song catalog you absolutely will not believe the many different vocal styles she is capable of she is a once and a generational vocalist !!!!!!
AJ is the girl of a thousand voices and selects a voice for each song. This voice has not been repeated even when for the same song, it was sung by a more mature voice and without the grit in the growls. She has always sounded more mature but without the intensity heard here. Thanks for sharing
Yes that is exactly correct, Angelina has for all her youth in singing been exploring her voice. That's why she has a thousand voices. Every song is different and its own thing because of this exploration. It has had the effect of bringing out the uniqueness of each song she sings adding colours of expression never before expressed in any particular piece Angelina sings. Wow..
Yes I am glad you saw them in this order which alleviates fear of an unhealthy path of a young vocalist. Think this is a masterpiece with a great influence of Screamin Jay Hawkins (gentleman on candle in beginning). Her performance of “I Who Have Nothing” made popular by Tom Jones at age 6 shows her potential. Her originals like Million Miles and Shield shows her writing skills and future writing potential. This has been a fantastic journey for me and hope you continue reacting to her and thanks for the insightful and great reaction
Excellent reaction and breakdown to The Queen of Jazz/Pop and Emotion! It's crazy to know that from 7 years old, she knew her Identity as a Singer, when it takes most Artists to be in their 20's or even older, God Bless!
Angelina has embodied the Original version by Screaming J Hawkins absolutely amazing her vocals techniques out of this world especially for a 9 year old, How???
She basically transformed herself in the 5 years following her win on NGT, and a lot of the things she needed to do to make the sounds she wanted are very natural today because of her voice maturing and her ability to control every aspect of her artistry.
Thank you so much for playing this. It is a masterpiece! Angelina, 9 yo, makes the impossible possible! I'm full of admiration that such a young little girl can sing like this, and yet makes it look so easy. My brain has a hard time coping with this. I had to close my eyes sometimes and just listen. Otherwise I would risk to have some kind of brain damage!
Exactly right! She has explored various techniques, methods, styles, and genres to discover and develop her array of vocal tools. She's so technical, She has grown each year by magnitudes. Astonishing. Check her out the next year at 10 years old in her rendition of the demo cover of Baby Fuzz's I'm Still Holding Out For You. Unforgettable.
This is an amazing performance with all the pieces fitting together just right: the visuals, the band, the (her) arrangement and her singing. Just great and amazing. I think if you let people just listen to this performance and ask what they imagine about the era it was recorded, the person singing etc. I don't think many people would guess this was recorded this decade by a girl of just 9. And yes, she is growing at an spectacular rate: she must be working very hard to make that happen. She is 16 now and has about a decade before her voice fully matures. I can't imagine what that will mean seeing how brilliant an artist and performer she already is. Thanks!
I wouldn’t mind wishing away a few decades of my own :-D She is working on new material and I can’t wait for that to be released. She has a few concerts planned back home and I have hope new stuff will come out before those!
For me this is The Greatest Performance Ever by The Greatest of all Time. 9 years 2 months and does her own arrangements. You just knew she would only get better.
You are one of the few reactors who seemed to fully appreciate those last notes--the incredible breath control and tonal variation in colors at the end.
This was released 6 years ago but made 7years ago just after she turned 9. And the pen work was showing the musical arrangement she wanted as she does all her arrangements. 🎶👱♀👗👠👠💓💓
A child prodigy a barefoot princess a queen of jazz at 9yo and she's from Norway English is his 3rd language she nailed it love your true reaction thanks
When I first heard this, what blew me away most was how she could come up with this interpretation at that young age. But if you listen to the original Screaming Jay Hawkins recording of this song, you can clearly see how strongly that influenced her interpretation. That she could produce what she did is a testament to her gift and her growing skill.
Honestly, the massive smile on your face, from beginning to end, says it all. The joy she inspires. The amazement. You can't buy that. And you can't contain it. Just wonderful. Great reaction and analysis, thank you 🥰
When watching the last episode, the closing scene of the series, Lilihammer, that little Angelina was performing "I'm A Fool To Want You" in a bar. Her voice was so striking, I watched the credits to find her name. The first youtube I found was her performing "Gloomy Sunday" by Billie Holiday. Since you're going backwards chronologically, look that one up. She's only 7.
It is an other worldly moment that will live on forever!!!! She already knows I’m sure even at 9 in this video that she is a timeless artist and is putting everything she is and has in her young girl self into her burgeoning over the top genius!!!!! She is ANGELina…not of this world but desperately needed by this nuts world!!!!!!!
Angelina is something special indeed, but this band also deserves some credit. They are very very good. Professional musicians of high quality. That sax solo is pure bliss.
Hands down my favorite vid to watch reactions of! Nice analysis of her technique, she has never sung this song in this intense style since this recording. Most likely to protect her young vocal chords. If you get the chance, you should listen to the original of Screamin Jay Hawkins, then you can see how masterfully Angelina re-arranged this song while still respecting the original artist (as she always does). In my humble opinion, this is how the song was meant to be sung. Most people cover the Nina Simone version, But Angelina is faithful to the original. A little back story, the song was originally intended to be sung as a ballad/love song. However, the night of the recording Screamin Jay and the band got pretty drunk and his wild, "shock rock" style is what came out. I believe Angelina knew the history of the song and that is why she arranged it the way she did. (at 8/9 years old no less!) Looking forward to much more Angelina!
Welcome to this unreal cover, Bethany and thanks for the beautiful analysis. This interpretation is important for understanding the uniqueness of Angelina's work, because it shows how she, from a very young age, manages to beautifully elaborate her incredible passion and understanding for music, especially for this type of iconic songs. She is surely the only little girl who has the courage and the ability to take a song from Screaming' Jay, so imbued with his power, and rearrange it according to her sensibility and musical vision. This approach is not exaggerated interpretation of her, but the elaborate translation of Screaming' version of the original song. I sincerely believe that this is the most beautiful version of this song made, in more than 50 years since it was written, yet there are dozens of versions, also sung by great performers. 💛🧡❤
There has been very little put out about her teachers (advisors?) but some have said that this was one of the last times she used rasp and growls until she was considerably older trying to protect her larynx until it matured. I loved how she would stick her lower jaw forward and then stick her tongue out to get more space for the low notes. If she figured that trick out for herself she is a marvel (she is anyway🙂), but if someone helped her they did a phenomenal job with her. Musicians who work with her, call her the Boss, because she is very specific about what she wants. Love me some Angelina....great reaction.
Really appreciated Bethany's appreciation of how AJ has allowed her style to develop in accord with the maturing of her voice ... rather than being trapped by the techniques required by a child. Bethany opened my eyes to the challenges that many child singers face as they grow into adolescence and adulthood. And how AJ is successfully navigating those challenges in a way that clears the way for her evolution into what will surely be an extraordinary level of artistry. One minor exception I do have to Bethany's reaction ... she often refers to how AJ sang when she was 10 as opposed to how she sings "now" , i.e. how she sang on AGT. Note that the AGT performance (Bohemian Rhapsody) happened 3 years ago when AJ was 13. She is now 16. If one wishes to compare the 10-year-old Angelina Jordan with the current AJ, it would be much better to use her recent performance of "My Funny Valentine" or her cover of Adele's "Easy on Me" as examples of AJ's current development as a singer.
Angelina is just a natural singer, she has the ability to give each song she tackles just what it needs to make it the best it could be. Over the time watching her you see she never does a song the same way twice, she is so spontaneously creative she performs each song in a different way each time. Sometimes for example she will do a different ending as she did in her two versions James Brown song "It's A mans World" first one with Norway's Royal Military band ( th-cam.com/video/HEm7tGrjIKk/w-d-xo.html ) and then Kongsberg Jazz Festival 2018 version ( th-cam.com/video/meUN_mTpl1I/w-d-xo.html ) both are amazing but a bit different in the ending phrase.
she used these techniques in this cover to purely to pay homage to the original. Unlike the later covers the original is sung just like this by Screamin' Jay Hawkins (hence his photo on the candle at the beginning, though most people don't even notice that) and she wanted to be respectful. It's worth noting she'd been singing years by this point in her career. She wasn't a beginner by eny means.
Angelina is divine 👑 for me the best version from this song ever, she lives every word and her technic and timing is awsome, soooo goood 🌟🌹♥️👑 also the music is perfect, only the best for angelina, she is a diva ever, heavenly 🌟🙌
Wonderful professional reaction to a Masterpiece and I am sure when she soon hits the mainstream world with her unparalleled talent, it will be view another 10 million times!
New subscriber here! Great reaction! Between this song and Bohemian Rhapsody, you are witnessing her development from ages 9 to 13. Angelina is now presently 16 (as of January 10th this year). She has developed even more extraordinarily (if that's even possible!). So, you should check out her rendition of "My Funny Valentine" which she released on Valentine's Day this past February. It's her latest release (besides a few short TikToks since).
My dear, congratulations to you for letting us hear your analysis and heartfelt comments about Angelina. Well done. Yes, there is no question, what she achieved at an early age of 7, something remarkable, she continues to do to this day and always adapts to her "new" mature voice as she grows. When you watch this again, notice how Angelina is very focused on the band's contribution to the song. In the beginning of the video you saw the band director handed a piece of paper. It was changes Angelina wanted the band to make before they started to record the song. She's been rearranging songs, mostly classics she chooses to sing, since she's 9 years old. By definition, can she be regarded as a Master Artist in today's world? I think so.
Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956. She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand (g) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.
Angie was definitely channeling the original artist on this performance. Never has done it this way again to my knowledge. She was such a sponge when she was young. She just absorbed all the wonderful sounds she heard classic artists create and added them to her own toolbox of skills and sounds. And we have what we have today. And no telling what the next ten years bring. Check out the performance from the original artist. There is no question it was her inspiration for her own. She took his wild theatrical performance and made it into her own Jazz/blues masterpiece. All while honoring him. The candle at the beginning and her look to the heavens before singing. Such class. th-cam.com/video/orNpH6iyokI/w-d-xo.html
I really appreciate how you discussed things like head voice, etc...techniques! I'm surprised you didn't comment on her superb technique and control when she says "I love you (3x's) anyhow.." transitioning through 4 vowel tonalities at 4:35 Superb.
Not only is she so talented but what she sings she has anger she is love she has passion for a child and I can’t friggin understand it she’s one of a kind of freaking out man wow
Wonderful reaction and choice of videos from Angelina's extensive history. She is truly a savant. I feel she has a bit of Amy Winehouse influence, and Adele, but she is so versatile. 'Easy On Me', her Adele cover, is masterful. And she is, I think, 16 now! What? I always have a sense of concern for very young artists and what directions they take in life with notoriety. It seems she has a caring family around her. The future will be fun to see how she keeps developing.
Angelina has done over 160 Covers and 8 or so originals. Since age 7 she has been doing her own arranging in every facet of her covers. At the start of “I Put A Spell On You” the caption reads “I Put A Spell On You” by Angelina Jordon and at the end of the session she was given the master copy. Most of the musicians are part of Norway’s Air Force Band and Orchestra. Courtesy of the Crown Prince of Norway who has declared her a National Treasure of Norway.
Great reaction. My first exposure to Angelina was also Bohemian Rhapsody. You should check out Angelina at 10 years old doing Feeling Good. This to me was when she showed that she was going to be one of the greatest performers ever.
I wonder if you listened to the original first in order to get the starting reference clearly in place. I think it makes it that much more impressive to hear how Angelina is reinterpreting the material, rather than childishly mimicking it. That actually seems to be her super power : her ability hear the stylistic core points of the performers she admires...internalizing the them and then giving them back using her personal color palette. Her ability in this respect is uncanny.
You MUST see her Norways got talent audition. She brought the judges to tears and she's only 7!!!
I’ll tell you what... Somebody put a spell on her! That is an otherworldly prodigious performance by a legitimate phenom. A genuine prodigy.
I feel like I should be in the back of a jazz bar listening to a seasoned performer, still in shock she is 9.
“So many colors in her voice!”
What amazes me is that she understands the emotions behind the song
Only this 9 year-old girl has captured the essence of this song. Check out all the other versions. This is the absolute best cover of this iconic song. Screaming Jay Hawkins would be proud.
This is one of the very obvious proof that she is a musical savant. She does her own arrangements and knows how she wants each instrument to sound. She's extraordinary.
Since she was TWO years old (truly) she was very seriously playing with listening over and over to any artist that she liked and teaching herself how to make the Bea
Definitely not a savant. Savant is genius in 1 particular area, BUT disabled on others. Angelina has zero disabilities!
The best "I Put a Spell on You" cover I've ever heard.
She won talent show when she was 7, Bang Bang is amazing, you should
check it out
Go back in time even more, another 3 years to I Who Have Nothing her first venture into a pro recording studio!
Angelina stole the show with her singing. This band doesn't get enough credit. They were amazing. Together with Angelina they made a perfect performance.
Perfect indeed.
@@torbjrnlund903 And even for that we have to give her credit, too, because she had written the arrangement.
@@bigtiger1964 She is not dumb, that's for sure.
@@bigtiger1964 did she really? thats so cool!
@@Iamthelizardqueenddaddy Yes, she did. You can see her making last minute changes of the arrangement at the beginning of the video.
I spent over a decade as a recording engineer doing everything from jazz to classical to R&B to rock and when I saw this video of Angelina's performance the first word that came to my mind was, Fearless.
MASTERPIECE came to mine...and I'm no Recording Engineer.
Listen to Angelina Jordan song nothing breaks like a heart Born to Die and stay
She spent alot of her time with her grandma an artist who listened to jazz whilst baby sitting.
When she growled "I love you" multiple times it reminded me of a quote by Claudio Monteverdi, who used to say: prima le parole, poi la musica.
Confuse ? Surprised? Amazed ? Yes yes yes .. she is incredible keep reacting
YES - thanks for noticing the candle... lol
Perfect comment, you got it. What impresses me is that by 9 Screaming Jay was on her playlist!
When I and my siblings and friends were kids we screamed yelled and made the weirdest ones we could. And I sang with my mother and sister . No problems.!
This child obviously is a prodigy .
From 6 to 16 AJ has song like an adult that is destined to be the greatest, not just female, STORYTELLING vocalist of ALL TIME.
Absolutely agree. She already is the GOAT in my humble opinion.
That little girl blows my mind, every single time.
She sounds like Amy Winehouse.
its almost as if she was put under a spell while singing it ;)
@@sandrabentley8111 Well, they're both jazz singers, both females ... otherwise little in common.
One of them definitely knew her. The trumpeter played for her when she performed “Summertime” on NGT Finals.
I think the word is ‘mastery’. She should get an honorary PhD, now.
This is simply first and foremost the greatest vocal recording of the 21st century!
You want to hear a real singer with soulful, bluesy artistry? That you won't find on TH-cam, go on TikTok to see a real talent.
@@wooshbait36 Not this time wooshy ;) Nice try though.
So true great comments
She doesn't make any weird sounds. This is perfection. She is like no other child.
There are English subtitles as the spoken language is Norwegian: th-cam.com/video/SAkZDAXJA4E/w-d-xo.html
.
Ok
At sixteen she can do things with her voice most seasoned singers aren’t able to do.
john Angelina's vocal range is 3 octaves give or take a semi-tone.
@@103mrgthank you for your info was going by what google put her at, maybe they evaluated her when she was younger. At any rate I still think she is one of the best singers out there today even at sweet sixteen .
She arranged the music and how the song should be set up.
Please consider doing a double reaction of "My Funny Valentine" 1st when Angelina was 10, just sitting on a chair at home, and then from this past February (16). The progression of her talent is just mind blowing!
I think this is the best cover of the song I've ever heard.
To see Angelina at 6 check out "I who have Nothing" her first time in a recording studio but she still shows she is a young child.
Truly incredible, no matter how many millions of times one watches and hears
So very glad to see you finally add more Angelina to your channel ❣
Seeing as how you've only listened to two songs by Angelina you haven't even got your toe wet yet. If you continue to listen to her nearly 200 song catalog you absolutely will not believe the many different vocal styles she is capable of she is a once and a generational vocalist !!!!!!
AJ is the girl of a thousand voices and selects a voice for each song. This voice has not been repeated even when for the same song, it was sung by a more mature voice and without the grit in the growls. She has always sounded more mature but without the intensity heard here.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you Bethany, your reaction brings me as much joy as this song does.
Wow..
She has dozens of perfect performances. I never seen to settle on which ones are her best. She is without question the Greatest Of All Time.
I'm not sure what is more impressive the vocal range/technique of the artist or your facial expression listening to it... thanks for sharing
Really great reaction, loved it so much,
Exactly right!
Interesting reaction. Its quite remarkable how much of a step change "Feeling good" feels, just one year later.
For me this is The Greatest Performance Ever by The Greatest of all Time.
9 years 2 months and does her own arrangements.
You just knew she would only get better.
Loved the reaction.
Simply the best. Enjoy the rabbit hole.
Some must watch songs from her. How great thou art to see her low range, I who have nothing at age 6,all of her original songs.
Angelina speaks 4 languages, plays 4 instruments & writes & composes her own music. She recomposed this song as well.
Her timing is just impeccable on this. When she comes in after the saxophone solo... It puts a smile on my face every time.
keep checking her out, feeling good (the indoor live concert) when she was 10, and summertime when she was 11 are great
There has been very little put out about her teachers (advisors?) but some have said that this was one of the last times she used rasp and growls until she was considerably older trying to protect her larynx until it matured.
Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are
(a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
(e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
(f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand
(g) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better.
Such class.

Angelina's progress gas been very well documented over the years. It's an amazing journey 😎
I am utterly shocked in the best way possible. Stunning!
I really appreciate how you discussed things like head voice, etc...techniques! I'm surprised you didn't comment on her superb technique and control when she says "I love you (3x's) anyhow.." transitioning through 4 vowel tonalities at 4:35
Superb.
great... GREAT
Not only is she so talented but what she sings she has anger she is love she has passion for a child and I can’t friggin understand it she’s one of a kind of freaking out man wow
I love that look on your face at around 2:09. That's what I love to watch on every reactors face for this song . 10000s of reactors.
At the start of “I Put A Spell On You” the caption reads “I Put A Spell On You” by Angelina Jordon
and at the end of the session she was given the master copy. Most of the musicians are part of Norway’s Air Force Band and Orchestra. Courtesy of the Crown Prince of Norway who has declared her a National Treasure of Norway.
Angelina is pure magic, I recommend feeling good at 10 years old. thank you sdos Argentina
I think it makes it that much more impressive to hear how Angelina is reinterpreting the material,
rather than childishly mimicking it. That actually seems to be her super power : her ability hear the stylistic core points of the performers she admires...internalizing the them and then giving them back using her personal color palette. Her ability in this respect is uncanny.
