I performed the same test when I received my new irons. I found my 8 iron was consistently 4 yards sort. The loft was .75° off. After a simple bend, all was good. Great video!
Rick, I’d be interested to see what happened next. Did your 9 iron need adjusting, and did you have other issues with the 3 iron. Give us an update when you figured it out. It would give us all an insight into what to look for when we have distancing gaps. Great content again, and I really appreciate your 2 videos a week!
i was thinking along the same lines. for someone who’s hitting his driver over 300 total, those iron distances are a little light. i guess it just goes to show how much power that cobra driver has
It's also to do with his swing. If you watch his lesson video with Claude Harmon he explains it really well. Rick hangs back just a touch and allows him to pound driver and is a little shorter with irons.
Loved seeing our gappings be so similar. It made me feel a lot better about my distances. After watching too much TH-cam golf I start thinking everyone hits their pitching wedge 165 yards on avg. instead of a 3 and 4 iron I game a 5 and 7 wood which help tighten my 240-190 gappings. My 5 iron is my 185 club, 7wood is 200, 5 wood is 215, 3 wood is 230. Off the deck averages. And I don't worry about so many mishits with a 3 & 4 iron, not to mention the steeper landing angles with the 5 & 7 woods
Thanks for covering this Rick. It’s been a while since I have done a proper gap check and checked my lofts. Might be a good idea to do this at the beginning and midway of every season.
@@JayTheTapp I've got both and can't recommend them enough. I absolutely LOVE my 7W, such an easy one to hit and versatile once you experiment a little and if we're being honest, very few people should be playing a 3 iron, especially with the technology nowadays. Even 4i is a stretch for many.

Hey Rick great vid! For your wedges you could go 58, 54, and 50 degree becuase that would be a more even gapping and you can still hit a 58 really high as well or the 50 nice and knockdown shot if needed.
A gapping session like this is extremely important, one of the key ways I dropped my handicap from 25+ to ~10 in two years. Also, do a gapping session just with wedges doing partial shots to create a wedge/distance matrix. Knowing a 50% 58 degree goes 50 yards, a 50% 54 degree goes 62 yards, etc, is incredibly important for those approach shots. I'm long off the tee so I am regularly left with 20-90 yard approach shots and building the wedge matrix was invaluable.
same with me I can deal with 60 yards or above but once it goes to like 40 yards i just cant and thats probably like 5-6 strokes on my score so Ill have to figure out my distances for that soon
I've done a couple of these at the driving range with Top Trace and the results are great. But would I see more distance from a Pro V ball to a range ball??
Hey Rick, I just picked up a set of irons from logical one golf. I got the L1.X Forged MB irons, the L1.XW wedges, and the logicalone.3 putter. They're definitely not week known, but look great and seen well built, but thought it could be a cool review on the channel Caviat is you have to build the set, as they sell the heads and share separate. WS CB Irons still have classic lofts as far as I know. That might be why the gapping is different that what Rick is used to. I also play WS irons (V6 FG Tour forged) and the lofts are classic. For example, I could carry my former 7i about 180yds (Taylormade RBZ, 30.4 deg loft on 7i, more modern). My current WS 7i (34 deg), 160 - 162yds carry is pretty much stock. Even though the lofts only vary between 1 and 4 degrees, it can have a big impact... but control over distance for me! Any day!
That G430 Max 3 wood needs to be in the flat-minus adapter setting. It's just so clear it's launching too high, spinning too much and drawing too much for Rick ... and the flat-minus setting would be a huge help to fixing all of those things.
Hi Rick. Thanks for the video. Would be interesting to know club speed and launch angle. As an amateur it would be interesting for me to know if my lack of distance is due to a lack of club speed or shaft lean. Or maybe both. Thanks again for sharing this info with us.
When you see the numbers put up together like this, you notice how the roll-out (difference between carry and total distance) increases quite steadily through the bag, by about one extra yard per club. It's something I often fail to account for properly when I'm using wedges and lofted irons around the green for chipping, which can lead to overshooting the hole.
Hey Rick, You should do a review of some of the takomo irons! Personally I would love to hear your thoughts on performance as well as the differences between the sets they offered. Cheer's mate

Can you review the Wilson Infinite putter line? I saw a bunch of comparisons between the Wilson putter ($130) and a Scotty Cameron of similar design ($500) and they performed the same. I was curious if the goat would confirm this
Hey Rick, love the content mate. Quick question, how often do you need to replace the projector screen? Those balls slam into it very hard leaving quite the indentation. Does that effect the sensors?
Hey Rick - besides gapping (i.e. loft) - did you know that changing the lie angle changes the length of the club? It's only marginal, but a 2 degree change in the lie angle can be just enough to make a noticeable change in the length, and hence the heft and feel of the clubhead. So, in a good fitting the lie angles of each club should be included. Then, if an adjustment is needed it should be done BEFORE the club is assembled. Just sayin'......
I have found that even the highest quality club(head)s will have loft and lie issues. Getting them checked and properly adjusted is just as important as getting a good fitting. And - as others have noted - ya gotta know if the lofts overall are traditional (old school) or more modern (i.e. delofted) to begin with. Um, a good player recognizes this......
Are those lofts standard? Might explain why you aren't hitting them as far as your previous set. If so, might have to bend them in favor of a stronger loft. But FINALLY you got new clubs!
Love the channel Rick. I am a new golfer (less than 1 year). Not in great shape and 57 years old. My clubs are a mix-match of Brands, styles, and minimum 15 years old. He said my Basics are okay but I need repetitions and go for "Pure" contact at 50% and then I can start introducing more club speed and hitting harder. And he told me to leave that LONG game to the young guys and showing off. That my short game will win the matches. @@enemyvirus
I teach new golfers and I have helped many of them upgrade their irons to expedite pure ball striking. My last student bought a 3-year-old set of Tour Exotics for $380 with stiff graphite shafts. He is absolutely murdering the ball compared to his old irons.
@@deanmacko6926 more people are telling me a good set of used clubs is the way to go. I have some health issues and have a slow swing speed in low 80’s. So I know that will play in consideration. Going to keep the budget 700 or below for the entire set.
@@robertflint4115 You should absolutely pick up new irons ASAP. If you have mismatched 15 year-old clubs, you will never get "good" and will likely become more frustrated than anything. It's clear that if you have a slow swing speed and are new to the game, super game improvement clubs should be what you look for. My favorites are TaylorMade M2 or m4 (about 4-5 years old), Callaway Mavrik (3 years old), or Tour Edge C523 ($559 on their site right now, new but last year's model). There's also a Tour Edge Hot Launch E523 Iron-Wood Set for $699 where each iron is basically a mini hybrid. Really easy to hit.
I found your yardage from 6 to 60degree very interesting. Mainly because I'm a 16HCP and hit the same yardage. The big change was I have hybrids 4 & 3 which are 170, 190 . But my driver is only 245 - 270 total. Wow 👌 Strange that my golf pro's wedges are the same as ours. P.S. loved the shank
That ball speed to carry distance on Driver looks off. 157 ball speed is closer to 265 carry. 286 would need 170ish. Look into settings on that launch monitor.
Do you not think you’d benefit from a 5 wood, hybrid etc if you’re not consistently getting a good gap with the 3 iron? Or if you’re not a fan of woods maybe a utility 3 iron?
In the past I’ve been a critic of your golf game but recently your swing looks awesome and it looks like your results are so much better. Congratulations
Rick, it may be due to Wilson usually running a more "traditional" loft profile, maybe worth comparing to previous clubs? Might need to get them all strengthened just slightly, because the gap from 9 to 8 would be small if you moved the 9 up to 145-150. Just a thought.
I met 2 guys on the course today and they said that TH-cam golf messed them up because they watch so many people, but followed up with, if you are to watch only one person, It's Rick shiels.
Don’t get me wrong , ricks fun … but if I’m looking to improve my game I’m not looking to Rick , at least not right now , he himself has admitted that his game needs a lot of work at the moment … padraig Harrington has a TH-cam channel now and you just can’t get better knowledge than a guy like that
Try the 3wood in the flat and -1 setting to get the left miss out and going a bit further. Then try and bigger and more forgiving 3iron to get that distance up too!
These changes are so obvious. Ian Fraser even commented on his video reviewing the G430 Max 3 wood that he should move it to flat-minus. It’s the solution to every problem he has with it. Too much dynamic loft, too much spin, too much draw. I’m a little confounded that somebody who’s been reviewing clubs as long as Rick is making such a glaring oversight.
Had a set of Mizunos delivered and the lofts were all over the place. For example, 9i was going 135 (usually 145) and 7i was going 182 (wtf). Sent the entire set back and got a properly lofted 2nd set. I always check my distances immediately upon receiving any new club(s). You'd be surprised how often the loft isn't accurate.
Knowing your yardages on stock shots is very useful if you hit a lot of stock shots on the course. If a person gets out on the course and then is going for fades, draws, knockdown shots, muscling a shot, everything but stock shots then things get much less precise.
If PW is going 126, a 9 iron wouldn’t typically go 150 due to gapping. The loft seems appropriate, only because I hit similar distances. My PW goes 124, 9 goes 136, and 8 goes 150. I’m definitely not a pro golfer, nor do I claim to be, but the rest of the distances make sense.
Adjusting your gap wedge or sand wedge should be based on your pitching wedge loft. If it's 46* I would keep the gap wedge at 50* and adjust the sand wedge to 54* or 55*. If the PW is 47* or 48* then move that PW down to a 52*. That's what I did and I maintained the proper yardage gap and didn't really have to adjust much with the loft change for short game shots. I went from a 48* PW to a 46* PW with my newer irons. I changed my GW to 50* and SW to 54* to accommodate the different lofted PW.
The last 3 clubs in the bag carry gap is 80 yards?!? Wow those are some crazy tradional spin #s. Do you need that much stopping power from spin w those launch your descents are probably beyond 50 degrees. Everything up to 3w seems to launch high and spin high. That irons vs driver discrepancy is interesting considering your speed.
Really interesting watch this, I have done this myself recently after being fit for new clubs and our yardages are very similar most withing 2-4 yards but as soon as you get to driver I lose 25 yards on you ?? why would this be the case, I'd consider my driving good, I spin it a little more around 2400 but surely that's not 25 yards loss ?
Make sure you get your lofts checked periodically too! If your gaps aren’t working out, it could be the result of one or more of your irons being off of its intended loft
Absolutely critical if you want to lower your score. I can't remember who does it, but one of the youtubers was talking about having their yardages actually marked on their clubs.
Makes a huge difference on distance when you play real solid irons compared to those hollow body irons. Hollow body irons will give more distance but you definitely lose consistency. 160’s for your 7 iron carry is more realistic. You should switch to a very soft ball as well. Sacrifice that extra roll out distance for more control. You would be surprised with the total distance and carry distance. There would only be a few yards roll out which is perfect for hitting greens if you hit the carry numbers consistently.
Ive noticed my pitching wedge flying way further thought it was my 135 club but hitting it from 150 and it doesn't make sense dont have a 135 to 140 club.
any chance you can include clubhead speeds and or smash factor when you do these? also seems like you ate lunch before doing this lol little bogged down today
Interesting, i tried the Wilson CB’s and was lent a set for a week, i also found that they were about 15-20% shorter than my JPX Pros, they felt great, but were insipid. Also hit the 9 iron 135 as against 150, your 8 iron was only 155 as against 165 so yes, these clubs don’t seem to perform for you either. If Wilson are not paying you, i would reconsider your bag. On the positive side, your work looks like its paying off, swing looks much improved and consistent
Are the lofts the same between those two sets? I would think the Wilson’s have weaker lofts than the JPX which would make sense that they don’t go as far.
@@zzzbb8 that’s true, but with the weighting balls fly as numbered, if you had traditional lofts the ball would balloon up, so you hit the clubs as designed. Traditional lofts can still deliver distance, but these Wilson’s don’t. Really wanted them to work, as played Wilson’s for years and wanted to support their resurgence, but can’t
I hit all my irons and even 3 wood basically the same distance as you, give or take a couple yards, but with my driver I’d be lucky to get 290 on my best strike, where does that massive gap between our yardages come from?
Take out the mg3 50° and put in the Wilson gap wedge, put in a utility 3 iron with have a touch more forgiveness and distance should help with the gapping 👍🏻
I do see a massive benefit with gapping however I’m consistently longer off grass than off mats.. although weirdly there is one club that never changes distance no matter what measuring device I use or where I use it and that’s my 7 iron no matter what seems pretty set at around 168yds.. 🙈
Rick, with the softness of these forged clubs you should have the loft and lie angles checked every few months or so, especially if you're hitting off of mats often.
Boy does this put in perspective how bad I am with my clubs and the efficiency of them. I know my lofts are a bit stronger than yours. But my 5 iron goes 210 and my driver only goes 265. Standard 5 iron Paradym, and Callaway Rogue ST driver in 9 degree (draw setting)... Sheesh I need to work on hitting the center of the face.
I have a feeling you won't keep your Wilson Irons for more than one season! But you will always remember them. (Can I have them when you are done with them? ❤ Wilson)
Dear Rick, could you please do a swing analysis video for you, Guy, James, and Peter... Just for fun... And maybe compare your swings to a playing pro who you share moves with ?? Would love to see it. Thanks , love the channel and the podcast
I think your disparity is between your 50° and PW. If you widen that gap, then base everything off that new PW yardage, you should be right at your numbers you usually expect. 119 to 126...PW should be around 130 based off your 50°. That'll put your 9i into the 140-145 range.
GC quads are so far out with ball speed to carry distance! Based on this ratio a 185mph ball speed would carry 335 yards but on tour this equates to 305yards according to tour stats. This is why all the top fitters and tour players only use Trackman yardage numbers!
Hey Rick you should go get fit by Ian at club champion next time you're in North America. That would be a dope colab and I think your game will benefit
I struggled with this for awhile as well. I have very high SS. Driver performance was matching the swing speed but . I just wasn’t getting it with my irons, all shots were high and ballooning. Got on some video and I was staying way too far behind it and flipping really bad. I’m no expert but I agree there’s some high launch here, granted those lofts may be more traditional than my 770’s
I performed the same test when I received my new irons. I found my 8 iron was consistently 4 yards sort. The loft was .75° off. After a simple bend, all was good. Great video!
"I don't need to know how far I hit my shanks" lol

ditch that 3i for a utility iron or hybrid.... or even a magical 7 wood
Really nice seeing you showing Wilson some love. They’ve definitely upped their game these past few years 👏
Rick used Wilson irons not long ago as well
Loved seeing our gappings be so similar.
I’d say a 52 vs 50 and a more powerful 3 iron or hybrid were the obvious takeaways for me - and check and the 9 iron loft
Then go look at the launches and come back. That’s the biggest takeaway.
these irons sound ridiculously good...

Strange that my golf pro's wedges are the same as ours.
P.S. loved the shank
If the PW is 46* (it is) so you went with a 50* GW, why would you not then do 54* Sand and then 58* lob?
That ball speed to carry distance on Driver looks off. 157 ball speed is closer to 265 carry. 286 would need 170ish. Look into settings on that launch monitor.
Yeah there’s no way without high altitude and/or a tailwind.
It’s true I get lessons play well then watch TH-cam try shit and loose my swing don’t watch TH-cam or If you do watch one and stay with one
My man!
Padraig Harrington and golf sidekick, everything else is entertainment
Don’t get me wrong , ricks fun … but if I’m looking to improve my game I’m not looking to Rick , at least not right now , he himself has admitted that his game needs a lot of work at the moment … padraig Harrington has a TH-cam channel now and you just can’t get better knowledge than a guy like that
Oi, go make some rust vids
I think my distances are
54° 100
50° 115
Pw 135
9i 145
8i 155
7i 167
6i 174
5i 187
4i 194
3i 205
1i 235
3w 260
D 300
Love it. Did I miss the video where you chose the Cobra Darkspeed driver?
Rick would you recommend a mobile launch monitor if you couldn’t access a fitting session or other ways to find out how far clubs go?
We’ve been waiting for this one !!
Try the 3wood in the flat and -1 setting to get the left miss out and going a bit further. Then try and bigger and more forgiving 3iron to get that distance up too!
going flat and less loft would make it go even further to the right
@@donniehewett-w7o true, meant to say go left!
Welcome back to Team Wilson!!! Give the 2024 Wilson balls a try too!! They are really good!!
I’m really struggling with my iron shots any advice?
Great video. This is why i went to a UDI 3 iron!
Those wilson staff models look 🔥 and sound great.
DO THEY GO THOSE DISTANCES CARRY MORE THAN 2/10? NOPE.
@@AlastairBarker You expect a 26 yard gap in between clubs?
Adjusting your gap wedge or sand wedge should be based on your pitching wedge loft. If it's 46* I would keep the gap wedge at 50* and adjust the sand wedge to 54* or 55*. If the PW is 47* or 48* then move that PW down to a 52*. That's what I did and I maintained the proper yardage gap and didn't really have to adjust much with the loft change for short game shots. I went from a 48* PW to a 46* PW with my newer irons. I changed my GW to 50* and SW to 54* to accommodate the different lofted PW.
This was an interesting look at the yardages and I feel like every golfer should do a gap test for a better understanding of their bag.
Should you consider carry yards or total?
The last 3 clubs in the bag carry gap is 80 yards?!? Wow those are some crazy tradional spin #s. Do you need that much stopping power from spin w those launch your descents are probably beyond 50 degrees. Everything up to 3w seems to launch high and spin high. That irons vs driver discrepancy is interesting considering your speed.
Rick have you thought about dropping either the 3 or 4 iron for a 5 or 7 wood to gap between longest iron (whether it's the 3 and 4) and 3 wood?
What's the PW loft?
Really interesting watch this, I have done this myself recently after being fit for new clubs and our yardages are very similar most withing 2-4 yards but as soon as you get to driver I lose 25 yards on you ?? why would this be the case, I'd consider my driving good, I spin it a little more around 2400 but surely that's not 25 yards loss ?
Make sure you get your lofts checked periodically too! If your gaps aren’t working out, it could be the result of one or more of your irons being off of its intended loft
The wilson irons are absolute money. I love mine
What driver are you playing
Absolutely critical if you want to lower your score. I can't remember who does it, but one of the youtubers was talking about having their yardages actually marked on their clubs.
This reminded me to do this a couple times a season so if something is off, I know I need to get lofts checked.
Rick, have you thought about getting the Wilson staff driving iron instead of 3 iron? Or maybe hybrid or 5 wood? Make the gap slightly better.
Seems like a high launch from those irons. 25 from a 9 iron seems just a tad high. Great for decent angles.
Definitely some gaps in there. And that 3i should obviously be replaced with either a utility/hybrid/5w. And honestly Rick you need a true bag fitting
I hit all my irons and even 3 wood basically the same distance as you, give or take a couple yards, but with my driver I’d be lucky to get 290 on my best strike, where does that massive gap between our yardages come from?
Good advice. I`ll take it
Take out the mg3 50° and put in the Wilson gap wedge, put in a utility 3 iron with have a touch more forgiveness and distance should help with the gapping 👍🏻
Maybe he uses his 50 for partial shots more often than full.
Put the Wilson 3 utility iron in the bag! Amazing club.
SW - 2m to 50m, GW - 2m to 90m, PW - 2m to 110m, 9i - 125m, 8i - 135m, 7i - 145m, 6i - 160m, 5i - 170m, 4i - 180m, 3Hybrid- 190m low flight, 5FW - 190m high flight, 3FW - 225m, Driver - 250m to 270m depending on low punch fade or high bomb draw. Unless I top it or shank it.
WAKEY WAKEY YOU ARE IN CLOUD CUCKOO LAND, YOU THINK YOU HIT THE SAME AS A TOUR PRO, ITS LAUGHABLE THE EGO HERE.
Mornin’ Rick, time to hit the range
Ping irons are the best … blueprints S and T combo and same as their s159 wedges they took my mg4 out the bag which I never thought would happen
Full bag gapping session yet doesnt even pull the putter.... what if you lose a bet and need to use putter on the tee box?
Great video but would have loved to see the averages displayed for each iron during the shots of you swinging the clubs
I think your disparity is between your 50° and PW. If you widen that gap, then base everything off that new PW yardage, you should be right at your numbers you usually expect. 119 to 126...PW should be around 130 based off your 50°. That'll put your 9i into the 140-145 range.
Bad weather near me this weekend might be a sign that I should do this…..
Rick in "not hitting it as far as he thinks" shock!
Thinking that 3 iron could change to utility iron like the p790 or ping Icrossover ... Might be a little more consistent too
Your numbers are pretty close to mine. I struggle with dynamic loft, so I'd guess that was your issue, more than the clubs needing "checked".
