It can be both, its most likely his swing but you can adjust clubs to open up the face or make the lie angle flatter, both of which will push your ballflight more to the right. He needs a property adjusted club to get the ballflight he wants with his swing
Wow no kidding who would have known that the swing is what causes the shot shape?! But with all the adjustments you can make these days a club can definitely help offset your natural shot shape. I never slice the ball like maybe 2% of the time but I damn sure can hit some big hooks so I always buy my woods at a higher loft and adjust the loft down to open the face a bit and go a bit flatter lie to help
How about the Ping 5 wood? Crank the loft DOWN all the way to 16.5. That also opens the face a bit. Will eliminate the left shot, and also get the distacnce back in the window you are looking for, with a slightly shorter shaft for more control.
It wouldn’t work. Rick creates too much dynamic loft for a 5 wood to fit that gap, even if he lofted it down. His 3 wood numbers are pretty much 5 wood numbers as it is
Pretty sure you can adjust Ping to make it flatter which would help protect against the left ball, which could be an option. Another option would be to test a 5 wood head turned down in loft which could be worth a try with the open face angle.
Rick creates a lot of dynamic loft, 5 wood wouldnt for that reason, his 3 wood has 5 wood numbers as it is because he spins it and has the dynamic loft of a 5 wood
I have the the Cobra F7 myself and I got it because of you Rick, when I first started watching your videos I watched you play at Nelson with Pete because it’s local to me, you played 1 hole and hit your then 3 wood really badly 3 times on the same hole on that video. Just after that I watched a video where you had ole bluey in the bag and you hit a shot around 250 yards onto a green and close to the flag. I thought if it can bring that much of a change for Rick it must be good for me, I now have the F7 3 wood in black, a f7 5 wood in blue and a f7 3 hybrid in black because I love them so much. I say give ole bluey a rest but you’ll be back to it.
Honest question, as an instructor, when do you attribute, for example, those left shots to the club versus swing? Are there some basic rules to self diagnose what I see on the range or course? Thanks!
Definitely should try the -1 flat setting to eliminate left. If you are worried about loft, you can try the ai smoke 3HL and set -1 on it. AI smoke has a similar shallow profile like the Ping.
Great video Rick!! Can’t go wrong with Ping! I have a ping g425 max 3 wood with a Venus black velocore 7x shaft. Just two tips to consider: - your ball position for off the deck looks slightly too far forward and I think that’s causing the left shot and the high weak slice occasionally - also I would really recommend the Ventus black velocore 6x or 7x shaft. It is sooooo stable and delivers club face the same way almost every time. I think you would start finding the middle of the face a little more with those two tips. Just might thoughts. Good luck Rick and keep up the great work! 😃
I'd love to see you do your own competition against yourself with your current bag vs a bag made up your favorite clubs you've carried in the last 5-10 years. It would be fun to see you play a round again with the F9 driver, old bluey, 2 ball putter, etc. vs what you're carrying today.
Other than DOD, no club in our bag requires a more precise tempo than the (fairway) 3 wood. Your uncommon height only increases this often unacknowledged requirement. I have noticed that when your tempo varies , like Mine on occasion, you instinctively attempt to make up for the loose feel with your athletic ability (Ie. Your hands). Fortunately, synchronicity and tempo are fairly easy to improve with a little positive reinforcement exercise. By making a 3 second golf swing, I believe that you will find returning the club face to square at impact becomes a more natural and predictable result. The difference between carrying a 3 wood that we have to protect from the ugly left side miss, and carrying a 3 wood that feels like a weapon of attack, one which is played aggressively, can quickly transform your enjoyment level. After all, making eagles and birdies is fun !!
I love Ricks philosophy on those left misses. It could never be the archer who misses the bullseye…. HAS to be the arrows or the bow. I need that kind of positivity in my life
Sad days Rick😢 "Old Bluey". I loved seeing it in your bag and had pushed me to get two woods and one hybrid by Cobra, right! The rails on the sole, SOLD me!
Hey Rick, You can mitigate that left shot by adjusting it To a flatter setting. I use The same 3 wood and discovered the Flat setting to take the left miss out. It’s perfect now!
Going about finding a new club without a proper fitting is almost always going to limit your game. The shaft is just as important in the dispersion as well as where the weight in the head is located. My guess is that the Ping, properly set up, would do what you're looking for. I would also recommend trying the Titleist TSR 2 and 3.
New fairway woods are so hot off the face. I was testing 3 woods last year and they went too far. I had to go to a 7 wood and loft it down to 6 wood to get the right gaping between my driver and 3 hybrid.
@bigjohny8446 Do you think that if you're hitting your 7-wood only 15-ish yards shorter than driver, that you're losing out on some yardage with the driver?
Just got a set of g430 stuff and i am waiting for it to arrive still so it was a nice surprise to see the same type of results i got when comparing to my old as you did with the 3 wood especially. Everything was +10 and less of a spread. Wild how just the club can be that different
I had a Cobra Biocell + 3wood in the bag. Replaced it with something more forgiving. Cobra Kingtec 2 hybrid lofted down to 15.5°, it goes a mile. Easy 250 yard club. Why not give a hybrid a shot Rick?
Rick, what’s your swing speed up to now, since you’ve been working on it. You said you typically hit your 3 wood around 250. My swing speed is 119 avg yet i only carry my 3 wood around 250-260. Granted i played baseball my whole life and just picked up golf a few years ago so my swing is that of a baseball players and i hit everything super high.
I've just been fitted for the 430 5 and 7 woods both 1 degree flat absolutely brilliant clubs, the 5 wood is a fairway finder and the 7 delivers the ball softly on the greens
Another fun video Rick. Sadly Old Bluey is outdated on the technology of today's clubs. Rick, I think it would be a real interesting video, if you took a Ping 430 max 5 wood and cranked it down to a 4 wood loft. Would you get the numbers you want and eliminate that left hook? I'd really look forward to that video and videos like it. I bet it would still perform Bluey. Keep up the great work, Cheers!
I bought both 3 and 5 woods in g410 for similar reasons. After a year with both, only the 5 wood is left in the bag, cranked down 1 degree and it does everything I am looking for. I have a sneaking suspicion it would do the same for you in the g430.
I’ve got the g430 3 wood, it’s awesome and very versatile, I also tested the 5 wood and got very similar feel and numbers but wanted the lower ball flight and comfort of slightly bigger head shape. Definitely worth you trying the 5 wood and might help avoid the lefts a little
I’ve had good luck with the stealth 3HL. Hits the carry distance you are looking for. Feels good even on poor strikes. Slim profile. One of my “comfort” clubs in the bag.
Since I was only using my own F7 Ol' Bluey for tee shots on short doglegs, I replaced it with a Ping G430 FIVE Wood which is easier to strike from the turf.
I own the 430Max 3W (w/a Ventus blue shaft) and it is the greatest 3W I’ve ever owned. It is literally my favorite club in the bag. You’ll love it if you go with it.
I had the same issue with G425 i had the max driver - but, when i tried the max 3 wood it just went left....moved to the LST 3 wood and was probably the best 3 wood i have ever had
Cobra fairways are way underrated. I got fit for an LTDx 3 wood. Love it so much I went for the 5 wood as well. The 5 wood is the best club in the bag, a fairway finder. And off the deck the 5 wood with the rails is so good.
Being you fell in love with old bluey for so long you should really try the new cobra dark speed ls 3 wood. I bought one a few months back and it’s the absolute best 3 wood I have ever played. It’s longer straighter and easier to hit than any 3 wood I have had in the bag…. 🙂👍🏼
The ball is opposite to your left heel Rick. You are not hitting a driver! No wonder the ball goes left (and sometimes right). Put the ball more back in your stance, especially when hitting the 3 wood from the ground.
Hi Ric, I have its predecessor 425i Max Driver, 3Wood and 5Wood only bought 3 and 5 recently they are brilliant, reckon even my old mum could’ve hit them. Great investment for sure if you go with the 430. Is so easy to hit and does go incredibly straight, very little draw or fade.
I switched over to a Qi10 fairway wood with a HZRDUS RDX Blue shaft from a Nike Covert VRS. Hands down night and day. Give the Qi10 a swing. You will be stunned!
There is always one or two clubs in the bag which is hard to move on! Mine are a 20+ years old Yes! Victoria putter and a Mixuno JPX EZ 5 wood with a Fujikua x-stiff shaft which shouldn't suit me but just works, 190m consistently.
Try a PXG 3 wood. You can crank the loft and it always drops the lie flatter, helping to minimize that left miss. Not to mention super shallow face like you prefer!
I bought my own Bluey, and really enjoyed it too. I retired it last year for a Corbra LTDx 3 wood, to match my driver. I really like it. I agree, auction it for charity
Not sure how you play your lie angles but PING does allow you to put the club into a flatter lie angle which may help with that LEFT miss quite a bit. Something to play around with for sure!
Rick great video mate but when you are testing woods or Drivers can you tell us more about the shaft that is in the club you are testing? Not sure what shaft what in that 430. What is the stock Ping Shaft or an upgraded shaft?
I used to love the G410 3w for the same reasons you like the appearance of the G430. I recently found the Srixon ZX5 MKii 3+ w/Ventus Velocore Black 6S and I’m in love.
I bought one at a golf convention for around 85$. Almost new when I bought it. Been in the bag ever since, 4 years currently. My playing partners will borrow it over hitting their own club.
The Mizuno woods are underrated as any brand as I have seen. I was Callaway and Titleist for the longest time and now I have 3 wood and 5 wood for Mizuno. You should give them a try!
Try the TSR or Callaway Ai Smoke. You could get one in 16.5 degrees. You might want to consider a 5 wood lofted down to take out a left miss. I went for the Ai Smoke Triple Diamond this year, I don’t see me changing for a few years. If you want to try something different give the Apex UW 17* a try I have one in the 19* head and it is amazing. I have heard of a few replacing 3 wood for one.
I think everyone has an "ol' faithful'" in their golf bag which - despite trying new technology and different clubs - we all go back to. Interesting to analyze and test against something new. Also, I like the look of those Vessel golf bags - do you have a 'code' we can use if we want to get one?
Old Bluey! I've been looking for 5 wood/hywood with the cleveland xl launcher, and it has the rails! Might be a good replacement for ya, but yeah, the Ping g series is awesome too! I went with the xl launcher hywood 18° and im excited to hit it. A lot of good reviews on it!
Rick look at a different shaft the head is fine. And if ur trying to take the left out turn the loft down ur over spinning the 3wood by about 500 rpms look for a stiffer profile shaft and turn the loft setting
I respect your willingness to advice Rick yet I have to note that shaft has nothing to do with flight direction or spin, solely feel. The fine gentlemen from the (formerly known as) TXG channel have said this countless of times, and they have so much knowledge on club building that anyone can happily accept their expertise. Also, delofting shuts the face which...points it...left? The issue is that rick isn't comfortable with his 3 wood. He needs to practice and find a pre swing routine and a set in stone rhythm that gets him a consistent ballflight. No amount of gear trickery will compensate for a poor level of consistency in movement and you will only waste time and money not getting better but by buying better gear
I use a slightly newer, all be it very similar cobra sz 3 wood and I have to say cobra know how to make a well balanced and comfortable swinging 3 wood, I wouldn't swap it for anything. Gives me consistent 230 carry of the deck, can shape the shot a bit but never feels like I would slice or hook unless I put a really bad swing on it. I'm not an amazing golfer either, around a 14 handicap but when I have my 3 wood in hand I feel so much more confident than any other club in the bag.
Rick should stop blaming clubs for going left and instead show the strike data on these strikes - where on the face the strike was, head position, face path, face-to-target etc. Then he can compare that to his good strikes, and determine how is swing generates that left ball.
Just happen to be getting ready for my early morning tee time and come across your new video after it was just uploaded. Hope that’s a sign for a good round!
How many times has “Old Bluey” temporarily had a replacement? And it’s always gone back into the bag. Ping clubs are great. And it’s Ping 3 wood that did eventually manage to replace my old Yonex steel headed 3 wood some years back. Btw, I do miss that old Yonex club. Thing is we get used to clubs we use & what they do. Might be worth working with the Ping G430 for a while to get used to it. Am sure it’ll settle down.
As a short driver I use my 3w all the time for second shots. Have the Tour Edge Exotics E722 . Very forgiving very flat lie , lovely low launch , try that Rick. If I can hit it anyone can ..!
I mean honestly either de-loft it or flatten the lie angle... congratulations it's not going left anymore... You've played a lot of ping clubs on your channel and they've been ok for you but I think it's because you're transitioning towards "old man" golf and not staying aggressive. I'd love to see you just say "ya know what...I've got a lot of game left in me so I'm going to stop playing so defensive and start actually trying to push myself again". Get back into a LS driver. Put blades back in your bag. Get a TSR3 3 wood and flatten out the lie angle. Start going on offense again... that was when you were at your best and it is most certainly still in you. Love ya Rick keep up the good work!
We need an old bluey highlight video

Yes we do
more like a short lol
I second. do we have a third?
@@mloney9772 okay I'll bite
-1 flat setting!! 👌🏻
We need to see you do a full bag fit with Rick!
Came here to say this but the expert got here first! 😊
The 🐐 has spoken. Better listen Rick
Rick might have no idea about how much this comment excites us. A collaboration would truly "be phenomenal".
Will definitely try. Thank you for the advice
The left shot isn't the club, it is your swing!
Fact.
It can be both, its most likely his swing but you can adjust clubs to open up the face or make the lie angle flatter, both of which will push your ballflight more to the right. He needs a property adjusted club to get the ballflight he wants with his swing
Rick, did you know you can have clubs fitted and adjusted to you. OMG !!
Shaft can make a big difference too. I always wondered why Rick never tried different shafts in old bluey.
How about the Ping 5 wood? Crank the loft DOWN all the way to 16.5. That also opens the face a bit. Will eliminate the left shot, and also get the distacnce back in the window you are looking for, with a slightly shorter shaft for more control.
I like how you think … some people are too rigid with lofts and things like that
Yea especially when putting a shaft in he can cut it a little long to get the distance up.
I'm not a fan of this solution tbh. Its probably an alignment issue, but a bit of diligence on face and path would be a more sustainable approach.
This is the way
Or set it flat. Ping has flat setting
Is it worth trying the 5 Wood and cranking the loft down to open up the face a touch to protect you from that left shot?
Just practising his game will prevent the left shot
This was my thought as well. Should deliver everything he is looking for
Came here to say just that. Ricks problem isn’t the club. Make the game easier for yourself.
Agree with putting in a 5 wood and cranking it down.
I thought if it can bring that much of a change for Rick it must be good for me, I now have the F7 3 wood in black, a f7 5 wood in blue and a f7 3 hybrid in black because I love them so much. I say give ole bluey a rest but you’ll be back to it.
I've just bought the g430 sft 7 wood, you cannot go wrong with it. What a club.
Great vid rick
The ball going left is on you Rick can't blame that on the club. Maybe you just need to spend more time hitting 3 wood.
Correct
My thoughts exactly. If it goes left with one 3 wood, why wouldn't it go left with every one?
I was thinking the same. Don’t blame the club, blame the swing.
And can’t the pings be set 1 degree flat?
How dare you …. It’s always the clubs fault 😂😂
Honest question, as an instructor, when do you attribute, for example, those left shots to the club versus swing? Are there some basic rules to self diagnose what I see on the range or course? Thanks!
Couldn't agree more. Blaming the clubs for swing issues
Just two tips to consider:
- your ball position for off the deck looks slightly too far forward and I think that’s causing the left shot and the high weak slice occasionally
- also I would really recommend the Ventus black velocore 6x or 7x shaft. It is sooooo stable and delivers club face the same way almost every time.
I think you would start finding the middle of the face a little more with those two tips. Just might thoughts. Good luck Rick and keep up the great work! 😃
I loved the G430 3wood so much, I put the matching 5, 7 & 9 woods in the bag to keep it company
You should definitely auction it for charity Rick. It's possibly the most famous club in golf!
Calamity Jane is the most famous club hands down, (Bobby Jones’ putter)
@@sylvandude1 pretty sure it's tigers scotty which won him 14 majors. His backup sold for 350k which is insane
@@sylvandude1. Never heard of calamity jane. Know rick’s 3 wood well.
Jack’s 1 iron may be the most famous golf club
Rick’s Old Bluey > Tiger’s Scotty Cameron
Most famous in TH-cam gold
I love the idea that Rick genuinely believes the left shot is the 3 wood’s fault😂
I still use an old blue Cobra Amp cell 3 wood, just cant get rid of it. Those old old cobras hit so nice! Hope your new one works well for you
I’d try a G430 5 wood cranked down to the loft you want. The slightly shorter shaft might also help improve strike
It wont work
I'd love to see you do your own competition against yourself with your current bag vs a bag made up your favorite clubs you've carried in the last 5-10 years. It would be fun to see you play a round again with the F9 driver, old bluey, 2 ball putter, etc. vs what you're carrying today.

Try the Aerojet Max. Also I'd love to see you go get fit for a replacement. Old bluey needs the full package to be replaced.
I love Ricks philosophy on those left misses. It could never be the archer who misses the bullseye…. HAS to be the arrows or the bow. I need that kind of positivity in my life
Would be cool to see a video at a specialist club fitter. See if they can dial in a new 3 wood for you.
Sad days Rick😢 "Old Bluey". I loved seeing it in your bag and had pushed me to get two woods and one hybrid by Cobra, right! The rails on the sole, SOLD me!
It really is a sad sad day. I play a cobra f8 3 wood and I honestly don't see myself ever replacing it. I love that club.
Hey Rick,
You can mitigate that left shot by adjusting it
To a flatter setting.
I use
The same 3 wood and discovered the Flat setting to take the left miss out. It’s perfect now!
Going about finding a new club without a proper fitting is almost always going to limit your game. The shaft is just as important in the dispersion as well as where the weight in the head is located. @bigjohny8446 Do you think that if you're hitting your 7-wood only 15-ish yards shorter than driver, that you're losing out on some yardage with the driver?
There is normally a flat setting on Ping woods
Try the Maltby KE4 Tour TC fairway wood. I suck and I can't help but hit it straight!
I have that very same 3 wood in the bag. My longest shot with this club was a bullet baby draw shot that went 300 yards.

Oh no! Old Bluey is being retired! Say it ain’t so! 😀. Keep up the great videos Rick!!!
Rick, what’s your swing speed up to now, since you’ve been working on it. You said you typically hit your 3 wood around 250. My swing speed is 119 avg yet i only carry my 3 wood around 250-260. I've just been fitted for the 430 5 and 7 woods both 1 degree flat absolutely brilliant clubs, the 5 wood is a fairway finder and the 7 delivers the ball softly on the greens
Set the adjustable hozzle to flat
Isn't that left flight more of a shaft problem than a head problem?
I’ve got the g430 3 wood, it’s awesome and very versatile, I also tested the 5 wood and got very similar feel and numbers but wanted the lower ball flight and comfort of slightly bigger head shape. Definitely worth you trying the 5 wood and might help avoid the lefts a little
I’ve had good luck with the stealth 3HL. Hits the carry distance you are looking for. Feels good even on poor strikes. Slim profile. One of my “comfort” clubs in the bag.
How long should i keep a 3 wood? 2yrs? 3yrs?
Thank you for showing the top hits. Nice to see it is not just me that tops a ball now and then
Absolutely love my XXIO 3 Wood, it’s about 12 years old as well. Best 3 Wood I’ve ever used.
I'm really curious what your attack angle numbers are with a 3 wood off the deck. Those shots that hook left or right may not have enough compression.
please rick try the cobra aerojet, so easy to hit akd nice high soft landing ball flight, also really hard to hook or slice it
Since I was only using my own F7 Ol' Bluey for tee shots on short doglegs, I replaced it with a Ping G430 FIVE Wood which is easier to strike from the turf.
I have the Radspeed 3 and 5 wood, and absolutely love them. The 3 I am carrying roughly 220, and it seems to be extremely consistent
I love the G425/G430 head shapes. So slim. Keep the tee nice and low.
I own the 430Max 3W (w/a Ventus blue shaft) and it is the greatest 3W I’ve ever owned. It is literally my favorite club in the bag. You’ll love it if you go with it.
What shaft is in the g430 max?
Also, have you tried the lst model?
I had white colour topped 3 wood. I could not gauge the depth of it. Always dark colours for me going forward

I had the same issue with G425 i had the max driver - but, when i tried the max 3 wood it just went left....moved to the LST 3 wood and was probably the best 3 wood i have ever had

Still using my TM Superfast 2.0 3&5 woods. They maybe older clubs but man I love hitting them!!
Try the TSR-3 4-wood at 16.5 degrees of loft (adjustable). The 4-wood is a bit smaller than the 3-wood and I think you'd like the profile.
You’ll love the 430 max Rick. I put it in the bag and it’ll be my version of bluey. It’ll be there for ever.
Currently playing with the G430 max three wood. Favorite Three wood ever!
What I first noticed is have the ball to far up in your stance for a Three wood...maybe?
Jumbomax grips helped me with the left side misses. So much so that I have them on all my longer clubs. I rarely go left anymore.
I switched over to a Qi10 fairway wood with a HZRDUS RDX Blue shaft from a Nike Covert VRS. Hands down night and day. Give the Qi10 a swing. You will be stunned!

Don’t get rid of old Bluey. Those of us who have been with you a long time will feel like we are losing a friend too.
What about shaft differences in the ping to help with the left. Is that shaft too soft?
Try a PXG 3 wood. You can crank the loft and it always drops the lie flatter, helping to minimize that left miss. Not to mention super shallow face like you prefer!
I bought my own Bluey, and really enjoyed it too. I retired it last year for a Corbra LTDx 3 wood, to match my driver. I really like it. I agree, auction it for charity

Rick great video mate but when you are testing woods or Drivers can you tell us more about the shaft that is in the club you are testing? Not sure what shaft what in that 430. What is the stock Ping Shaft or an upgraded shaft?
Darkspeed LS 3 wood!! Have the driver and 3 wood, feel amazing and perform beautifully
I used to love the G410 3w for the same reasons you like the appearance of the G430. I recently found the Srixon ZX5 MKii 3+ w/Ventus Velocore Black 6S and I’m in love.
I still bag ole bluey myself and will always love this 3 wood!
I think the G430 line is what you’re looking for, whether you end up using the 3 wood or some other combination like a turned down 5 wood.
I don't blame you, Rick. I still have my Titleist 915fd 3 wood in my bag.
Thank you for all the good times OB!
Try the flat setting!
Absolute game changer 💪🚀
I use a slightly newer, all be it very similar cobra sz 3 wood and I have to say cobra know how to make a well balanced and comfortable swinging 3 wood, I wouldn't swap it for anything. Gives me consistent 230 carry of the deck, can shape the shot a bit but never feels like I would slice or hook unless I put a really bad swing on it. I'm not an amazing golfer either, around a 14 handicap but when I have my 3 wood in hand I feel so much more confident than any other club in the bag.
There’s a hosel setting to make the Ping have a more flat lie angle, and that would help with the left shots.
Rick should stop blaming clubs for going left and instead show the strike data on these strikes - where on the face the strike was, head position, face path, face-to-target etc. Then he can compare that to his good strikes, and determine how is swing generates that left ball.
Completely my point.
I really like my Cobra LTDx LS 5 wood which also has the rails - has great turf interaction.
G430 5 wood cranked down is an option
As a short driver I use my 3w all the time for second shots. Have the Tour Edge Exotics E722 . Very forgiving very flat lie , lovely low launch , try that Rick. If I can hit it anyone can ..!
Love my Ping G425 Max 3-wood. Swapped my old faithful cobra for it when the ping g430’s came out and the 425’s went on sale.
Always liked TM fairways personally. Currently have original Stealth Plus 3 and 5 woods in the bag and not hit anything else that could shift them
Rick. Think you should definitely do this test with the QI10. Proved the best one for me.
