THIS WAS AN AMAZING INTERVIEW!!!!! You can really here the passion in his voice when he talks about the short game. I will be getting his book and I can not wait to read it.
@@spenno73 what's the main thing that you took from it ? I don't have a good short game practice area near me and so when I play I usually play the percentage shot, keep the ball as low to the ground as possible, chip with the hybrid as much as I can, but having a range of options obviously helps
@@paultaylor7059 consistent easy to understand techniques to aim for consistency of strike will which lead to better control of distance. Also techniques still allow for errors as you heard in the vid as using the bounce. You can practice the releases at home with air balls, it’s easier not to see the result when first learning
It’s fascinating / amazing to me that Dan has a short game equal to or better than the tour players. With even reasonable quality ball striking skills I’m guessing he’s a plus 4-5 Hcp player. I always remember a stat from the Dave Pelz Short Game Bible; if a tour player finishes the short game shots of a 10 handicap golfer, the resultant product will be a scratch competitor. Awesome interview
Dan is an absolute short game guru. He has a very simple teaching style and communicates really well with his students. And he can play all of the shots he advocates as well. It is so much easier to learn when he can show you the shots first.
A really education video. I would never have thought that the wedge could play so many different shots by adjusting the release etc. I like the way Dan said he had about 20 odd wedges in theory in his bag by playing different release and tweaks in the shot! Wow.
@@RickShielsGolfShow would be really great to see a video breaking down how you can assess the best shot for the lie you have and how to use the wedge in different ways (open, square, toe down etc) to suit the lie. It is talked about in the podcast how amateurs often try and hit a shot that the lie doesn't allow for but there doesn't seem to be much content around talking about what shots suit what lies and how to use the bounce/grind etc to help
I’ve been golfing for a little over a year. Pitching & chipping is by far my favorite thing to do. I love how creative I can get with it. There’s so many different shots to play. Your imagination is literally the limit
His book is great. I like the summary section which shows you all 3 releases and the different aspects of each on one page. Also love the thumbs off drill for release 2.
What a great interview, ordered the book. I had a lesson with the club coach yesterday which will help also get with watching Dan video’s. As a 15 handicapper I know this is a part of my game I have to work hard at. As he said become a scratch golfer at your short game!!!
Dan is a phenomenal coach. I had the pleasure of attending one of his short game schools back in 2020 and it made a massive difference. Looking to return sometime in the future just to brush up. The Tavistock is a golfers short game dream too
I have had multiple lessons with Dan. Not only is he an elite, elite coach, but one of the nicest guys in golf you could hope to meet. I'm ready to whoop Rick's ass around the greens anytime 😀
I've commented a couple of times you should visit Dan. I was fortunate enough to attend one of his short game schools and dropped 4 shots of the handicap straight away. His set up for pitching 30, 50, and 70 yards was a game changer
I need some time with him. Single figure that's got the chipping yips. Used to be the strongest part of my game now I prefer putting from off the green. Great episode
I've been following Dan since I started playing a year ago and he's unreal. His book is really good and informative and his instagram is perfect when trying to put some of his book into real life situations. Top bloke and great Pod!
Great stuff. I’ve been working on so many wedge shots. I’m shanking a lot now but I see myself having quite an arsenal long term. Wedge play is like the sauce. Bbq still good without if it’s good. But if ain’t, you need that sauce
I've taken to 8-9-pw if I don't have to chip over something and it's saving me shots every round. I don't play as much as before, or practice at all, so keeping it simple is my new plan. Great pod. Lots of good insights.
Great podcast! Nice hearing from Dan and look forward to your videos with him. I thought his comments regarding short game practice interesting. A lot of reasons why players don't practice their short game enough. Sure, driving well is sexy but also one aspect is access to practice grounds. Most driving ranges, at least in my area of the US do not have good sort game practice areas. And many golf courses don't either. Guy mentioned how courses have putting greens. But yes, they often do not have room for chipping and short game practice room, and some actually limit those greens to putting only. One thing that I have tried to do is be able to hit a ball X number of paces. I can do that off a mat in my back yard with a net and at least get consistent hitting my clubs a certain distance and can pick my landing area on the green and hit it. I also liked his advice about getting the 60 degree wedge out of the bag. Many other coaches are saying that as well, as it can be an unforgiving club if you really don't use it or practice it often.
Short game proficiency requires shot type knowledge matched to course conditions. That is what you are teaching to your students, Thank you for looking at actual course conditions to determine shot selection! Very good insight!
I saw the podcast because i have notifications turned on. Clicked on it, it said the video is private. Now i see it was uploaded 15 hours ago and has little views compared to usual. What happened?
Testament to his success went on line to try and book a lesson with Dan, he is fully booked for the next 2 years!!!! and like a lots of things if you want the best you have to pay for it, so the book and Instagram shorts are a good option🙂
Weird, kept checking your channel and this never appeared. Got lucky and caught it in the suggested feed on the right. Got the bell ticked too. Love the episode and agree that wedges are super important. I've actually found Danny Maude extremely helpful for youtube content. Would love to see you meet up with him for a show!
Cant wait for the lesson,my head is scrambled got the yips confidence at an all time low which is ruining my game, wish I could afford a lesson with this man 😮
Honestly I’m still shooting 90’s or higher but my short game is actually really good. From 100 yards in to chipping, pitching, flopping, lag putting and two putting it’s pretty good.
I've seen crime scenes that are less of a mess than my chipping. I live 10 mins from Woburn so might pop down and see Dan. Also.... love how Rick says Woburn. Locals pronounce it wo-b'n without the "burn". :)
The worst thing that ever happened to my short game as a kid, was getting a 60 degree Cleveland. Yes it was a great benefit when I needed to get it high really fast, but before that I used a 7 or 8 iron using the contours and had a phenomenal short game.
Very interesting video, I would spend hours on my short game, but the issue I have is where do you go to find a good short game area to practice, my clubs short game area is very basic so prevents me playing a variety of shots.
Great watch.....but way too short. Could've listened for hours to Dan. His insta posts are brilliant....like Guy said you feel like a fly on the wall 🪰 Another cracking guest on the pod and can't wait for the video on the main channel👌

I remember when James picked up that old Titleist driver with the shorter shaft, declared it to be mini driver, and was very successful with it. What’s the difference?
Dan's short game videos are amazing! Thanks for having him on, Rick!
Dan is the man ! Best short game lessons i have ever had . Absolutely changed my short game in 6 hours . He deserves all the success he is getting now

I've revisited this video after getting his book a couple of months ago, and it's helped me to understand the book even better.

My favourite new instagram coach. Love Dan's videos
A very interesting discussion on an aspect of the game that is least practiced, yet would benefit most golfers in helping to reduce their scores.
That was possibly one of my favourite videos. Looking forward to the lesson video and I’ll be buying Dan’s book!!
Great podcast! I immediately bought the book
Fascinating interview, book on order.
I think we've finally found Rick's mafia name. 'Screwdriver Shiels'
