Loving it! I've kayak fished La Jolla a couple times now and haven't hooked up to a Yellowtail yet. But, did catch my PB Calico though. Itching to get out there again.
I'm on it Wanda. I have a catch, clean, cook smoked yellowtail video in the works. I also have been expanding my networks and connections to the culinary side of fishing that I will get into with future videos.
Wanda... Here's one for ya...Super Easy Super Delicious 😋😋😋😋😋 Chill trout if possible just scale and gut and rinse well...pat dry...( Easier to handle dry fish) Steak cut your trout not filet...turn fish belly up and guide your knife in-between back bone segments... Slightly melt cube of real butter add one tablespoon basil...two of parsley and whip together... almost forgot... couple finely chopped garlic cloves....mix all together... With butter knife spread onto steaks...Oven on broil... drizzle honey over steaks and cook pretty close to flame ... about 7 minutes just till honey starts to burn..... enjoy! Can BBQ too but have spray bottle because butter flames up.... It's so good even on yellow tail! Eric Underwood class of 81 Downey High School California....avid Steelhead fisherman! PS if you still have all your teeth sprinkle some chopped pecans before broiling.....let me know y'all
Waiting on my PA 14 that I bought myself for my birthday ... my son is using a kayak similar to your buddies .. man mad respect to him for being out there on that thing ... my kiddo will get my Cuda 14 and landing a YT would be amazing!!! Awesome channel ... just subscribed! Tight lines
Thanks Shawn! I’m stoked you got a kayak to get you out on the water fishing, that is the hardest part. Now you have to make the time. I hope to see you on the water soon. La Jolla is about to blow up!! Tight lines!
Thank you!! I love fishing and I am so blessed and grateful to communicate my passion and love for fishing through TH-cam videos. Life is awesome. Tight lines!!
Birds are a free fish finder friend! I'm green with envy....love yellow tail! Be careful out there! Eric Underwood class of 81 Downey High School California
My pleasure. Keep fishing hard and your time will come. Learn the basics and focus on networking with others at the launch and bait making. Ask people not just if they've caught yellowtail but where they have been making bait lately and if it has been hard or easy. Your best et for catching a LJ yellowtail from the kayak is slow trolling a greenback mackerel at the edge of the kelp. I've heard some kayakers have gotten some big yellowtail out in LJ recently that way. Tight lines!
Awesome video man. I’m currently turning A 15-year-old tandem Hobie into Frankenstein fishing kayak. A Frankenyak haha. Hope to see you out there next summer. Thanks for the tutorials.
Sweet bro! I can feel your energy and I live it. It’s all about getting out there and going for it. I hope you kayak turns out good. Email sdfishandsips@gmail.com and I maybe you can put to good use some of the old kayak parts and pieces I have laying around. Tight lines!
Boy, I love those days when most if not all the guys that go regularly would hook up with at least one yellowtail on most trips. If fishing got like that again it would tempt me to take out my Malibu X Factor in place of the Solo Skiff sometimes. Tight Lines Mikey.
I remember seeing you out there on your Grey X Factor. Fishing La Jolla is a timeless experience that I am so blessed and grateful to take advantage of. Tight lines Mark!
Candy bar greenbacks, sea dogs and a circus at the launch--you captured the LJ experience! Do you avoid seals easier using the motor of the solo skiff?
Exactly! You know all about those days in LJ! Seals are still hard to avoid even with the motor of the Solo Skiff. I lost a yellowtail this last October in LJ to a seal when I was on the Solo Skiff. Tight lines John!
I am hoping to get down that way this summer. Never fished in CA waters. Grew up in Miami and fished the Keys and Biscayne Bay. Bought a PA14 2 years ago and have been exploring the Long Beach area when time permits. Just received my fishing license so I am all set to go!
Almost exactly what I was looking for! A kayak fisherman who paddles only, no motor or pedal drive system! Only other thing I could ask for is using the same kayak I recently bought but still nice to see you paddle out with no problems and damn you made it look easy surfing back in one try and no falling, or getting hit back another wave or anything 😂. You wouldn't happen to have seen anybody out there on a lifetime tamarack angler 100 or similar budget fishing kayak out at sea paddle only, would ya? 😂 I'm out of shape so I'm hoping next year I can attempt to replicate you in this video, looks like heaven on earth out there. Subbed
I want to Experience that , super cool La Jolla Beach Launch . Great kayak set up and instructional Video ,I have a Cobra , fish and dive and a few Ocean kayaks . Also access to a Parker Cuddy cabin with Twin Yamaha's 250s . Ready for You to make Swordfish or Tuna Video ?
Thanks Sean. Great question. It is all about feel but would say if you put it in free spool for about 10 seconds and paddle slowly forward it will be a good distance back about 150-200 feet back. It takes some time and experience but I would say it's better to be on the safe side and let it go back further as long as you are not close to the kelp.
Yes. As far as I know ski beach is currently open for boat launch but I have personally not launched out of there recently. I do remember seeing a sign with renovations and construction that had planned. Did they start that?
@@SDFishandSips thanks for the help Mikey! I dunno about the construction. I’m launching down there for my first time ever tomorrow morning. I‘ll be there around 6:00 AM. Thanks again for answering my questions. Your channel is blowing up!
Dude! Just picked up my first DTX Minnow! I can’t wait to pull it! A guy on the Amazon review said the barbs are too small? Are you gunna use the stock hooks on your new minnow? Or switch them out?
Great news!! I'm stoked you got a DTX Minnow. I caught a lot of fish with the original hooks by keeping them on. After time however, I replace the table hooks with similar size because the orginal were starting to get dull and rust out.
Hey what's going on. I live in nor cal and fish for lings all the time but kind of curious about the yellowtail now. When do they start to run out there?
Thanks Drew. I really appreciate the love and support. When slow trolling a mac 1.5mph-2mph is a god speed. Slow, silent, steady along the kelp makes the kayak ideal for slow trolling mackerel for yellowtail.
No. It is not recommended to do in a sit in kayak. Try this in a sit on kayak. There are rental places in San Diego like San Dog Kayak adventures where you can rent the correct kayak and get a guide if desired.
I have been out about 12 times with no fish hooked up once though, i think i lost the fish in the rocks because i could barely pull it up and then the line broke. It was pulling crazy hard.
Yep. Always been part of the La Jolla scene is the seals. They get bad in the late summer. I lost a yellowtail to one last September off the Solo Skiff in LJ.
You told the seal "back off foo"!!!! Hahahahaha #foosgonewild
Hahahahahaha!!!! I lobe it. Thanks for watching!
Perfect session, so chill I can feel it through the tube.
This is exactly what I'm trying to achieve and reading this comment makes me so happy. Thanks OC Run!

Fantastic!
Very informative. Only question is how do you know when to stop free spool when fly lining the mackerel and troll?
Thanks Sean. Great question. It is all about feel but would say if you put it in free spool for about 10 seconds and paddle slowly forward it will be a good distance back about 150-200 feet back. Can I tag along when I get my kayak? PLEASE????
For sure! But it may be hard to keep up now that I got a motor on my Solo Skiff!
I bought a nice high ozark kayak lol I’m a novice any tips? It’s a sit in kayak not a stand one is that a disadvantage
??
Hey Alex. Sit on is what you want for San Diego kayak fishing. I don't know about sit in, I have not seen any in the saltwater
How far off shore did you get those fish?
1 or 2 miles. Not far.
Is tide a factor at all?
Is it ill advised to try this in a sit in kayak?
No. It is not recommended to do in a sit in kayak. Try this in a sit on kayak. There are rental places in San Diego like San Dog Kayak adventures where you can rent the correct kayak and get a guide if desired.

@@SDFishandSips yep agreed. I probably need to buy a fish finder :(

Gangsta seals off La Jolla, eh?
Yep. Always been part of the La Jolla scene is the seals. They get bad in the late summer. I lost a yellowtail to one last September off the Solo Skiff in LJ.
How deep is it normally where you catch yellowtail?
100’ is my favorite yellowtail depth

You want a real sleigh ride hook a seal did that twice
Or hook a dolphin. I’ve done that once. Thanks for watching!
