Way to keep your cool until the fish was on the boat, then let the whooping and hollaring rip buddy ! haha. i just got a 2022 hobie compass, going to plan at least a few trips to la jolla this year and try hitting NW Corner. Been yak fishing for like 10 years, never had a pedal drive tho. Hoping this will provide the confidence needed to go out a little further and chase the YT and WSB. Been watching all your vids man, just subb'd. Would love to get together and fish with you. Im a solo fisher 99% of the time, but would love a buddy to show me the ropes of launching from la jolla once or twice just to give me the confidence. Thanks for the content man, you're a stud.

    Mickey you are living the dream. Good Karma coming your way. I surf launched LJ today on my Solo and bait was hard to find trolled a Rapala X greenback but no luck instead just kept getting a bunch of Bonito's on the sabiki and could not find any bird action. Finally got a nice 14" greenback and trolled it for the last hour or more before heading in cause the increasing wind was making a lot of white caps. Hope to see you out there on one these trip. Tight Lines, Mickey.

    • @SDFishandSips
      @SDFishandSips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mark R Try trolling one of those bonito. I know people who have caught yellowtail with bonito and one guy told me he caught a White Sea Bass with a half dead bonito. Crazy. Thanks for all the support and I hope to see you on the water soon.

    • @markr9312
      @markr9312 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SDFishandSips Thanks Mickey. I did for a while but if your not constantly moving faster, it leads to issues. On my older Malibu X Factor I used to have I caught a 5' Mako dropping a bonito. Got it's picture before he broke off 2' along side of the kayak and it's the picture on my Avatar on BWE (FISH11). Twice the bonito on a fly line wrapped the other rod line trolling a sabiki. That was almost the same as with larger greenbacks, not hard to deal with. The other issue was a totally different adventure. The flylined bonito swam fast enough to wrap my braid on the outboard prop. That was sketchy, it killed the motor and I had to try and reach the line with the engine tilted. Can't really put your whole body weight that far back, so I used my gaff to reach the braid. When I pulled on the fish end it unwound a turn before it would bind up. At first I tried to grab the rod end and couldn't get it that easy, so the fun part began. Removing the outboard from the transom to put the motor weight further centered. I put a game clip on the outboard just in case. Lifting it up and on top of the gas can was not too hard, once there I cut the braid and hand lined the bonito in and released it. Then I cut the rod end line and at that point when I pulled on rod end of the braid it unwound easily. The hardest part was trying to lift and get the outboard bracket (which kept turning) to set on the transom. After a few tries, I got it, but it was an adventure. After that I kept trolling the Rapala X rap and the sabiki, finally after many more bonitos, I caught the large greenback and trolled it the rest of the time. I learned if that happens again, to try the rod side line first as it would be the likely line on top of the wound on line. Every trip kayak or otherwise you learn something, if you don't learn, you can't get better. It's funny because the area and depths I trolled turned out to be the same were you caught your Yellowtail and WSB. Of course over the last 7 years that is mostly the large area I have caught 80% of my Yellowtail.

      P Robinson Thank you! Trolling is so exciting because you never know what might hit it. The real trolling guys to watch are the Hawaiians. I’m experimenting with some Hawaiian style trolling lures for Tuna. I can troll them faster at around 9 mph vs 5 mph with the Nomad.

      Yes, I have used the Rapala xraps with success but do like the nomads better. I think the Nomad DTX minnow has a little more sideways shake and is more sporadic then the rapalas. And I have ore confidence in the Nomad because I have fished it more and caught more fish with it. Everyone is different, this is just my opinion based on my experiences.

    Love the vids. Considering the solo skiff myself. What hp is that Merc?

      Thanks Bro! I appreciate the support. I have a Mercury 6hp on it now. I had a Mercury 5 hp on it before. The 6 hp gets 1-2mph more than the 5 hp and tops out around 14mph on flat water rigged out.

      kalihi_shaka_yak Villanueva It’s hard seeing a big Sea Bass in front of you when you have never caught one yourself but that is what makes fishing great. Make a goal of catching one and just keep fishing and have faith that your time will come and it will. And when it finally does the feeling is so much better. Thank you for all the support my man. Hope to fish with you soon.

    How far is that from mission bay?

    • @SDFishandSips
      @SDFishandSips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      La Jolla is about 7 miles north of the Mission Bay mouth. From the launch at Ski Beach to the mouth is about 10 minutes and then about 30 minutes from the mouth to the south end of La Jolla kelp. Then La Jolla kelp stretches another couple miles north.

    Mikey, would you go back to the Hobie PA14 peddle kayak or are you loving your solo skiff with motor? And between the two, which is safer our on open ocean?

      What program are you using to edit? I recently switched from iMovie to Adobe and when I export there is a feature for TH-cam Full 1080p quality. I have a GoPro 8 and shoot 1080p 60fps.
