How to Catch YELLOWTAIL (Gear, Irons, Lures Explained!)

- Ali explains his tips on how to catch yellowtail off the coast of San Diego. In the studio he explains the basic techniques, gear, recommended lures, irons when targeting yellowtail. Spring time is here and the yellowtail bite is already warming up. Either fishing from a party boat or a private boat, try these techniques out. Hope it lands you a yellowtail.

I'm glad to hear that you can still find sardines for bait. They were decimated along the Los Angeles -San Francisco coast in the late 60's, the last big school was taken on one night using airplanes as spotters to bring in the entire fleet. They were grinding them up for fertilizer decades before that. Unbelievably poor resource management!!
We are stoked to have a happy, healthy bait fishery here in socal. Casting anchovies is no fun.
Cool stuff. Wish we had access to live sardines and mackerel here in norcal, would be killer for big rockfish.
They do love a big sardine for sure. A lot of times we'll load a big tank of mackeral and fish those exclusively. IT filters out the smaller fish and big reds and lings can't say no. Good luck.

Never tried a nomad on a party boat yet. Might try it a couple times this year an see what happens. Been liking the flat falls and colt snipers.

On the Madscad what size is best for La Jolla? Seems to come in several options. Also best hooks for it? Thanks. Great videos.
The 95 or 115 is good for smaller fish like Calicos. Yellowtail love the 115 or the 150. Hope this helps.

Line capacity really isn't that essential for surface lures. A Fathom 25N loaded with 65# braid will have plenty of capacity.

One question why do you prefer short fluro topshots vs 50-75 yard mono topshots? Does short fluro really get bit more than say 25lb smoke izor mono?
Thanks for the kind words. We almost always fish the short top shot for a couple of reasons. The short topshot has MUCH less drag than a long mono leader and your bait will swim much better. Fluoro is harder to see in the water as well and definitely gets bit better.
I agree. On both spin gear and conventional i switch out my 80 yds of mono for a nice 6 ft leader of 25 , 40, or even 15 florocarbon before boarding my 3/4 and full day trips
Ali I’m heading out of San Diego aug 4+5th have a torium 20 on a cal star 15-30 and a penn slammer on a carnage2 heavy any last minute tips love the vids
Ask the deckhands how to pick the BEST bait out of the tank and listen to any other tips they give you. They know their stuff.
Keep a couple of smaller sized lures (mega bait or Hook up) if they are keyed in on small chovies they won't bite the bigger irons.
Edit: this channel is giving some of the best info for SoCal, and in the perfect no BS format. 👍🎣👍

I have a small damiki backdrop rerigged with 1/0 assist hooks that kills it when they are on small bait. A yellow straightened out the hooks that came on there originally
I love all your shows If I can't get on the water I'm watching and learning for new skills. What color madscads work the best in so cal? I'm heading out for an overnighter to the channels. I wanna make sure I'm prepared. Thanks
Man we love to hear this. We don't think color makes a huge difference in lures but we try to match the hatch whenever possible. Try the sardine pattern. Can't go wrong there.

Yes sir. You just need to figure out what speed to wind at. If you wind too fast, you'll kill the action of the lure. Good luck.

which brand of braid would you recommend (power pro, daiwa, nomad designs) , mainly for the 1 day charters that head out to catalina? Thanks in advance.
We have been fishing Seaguar Threadlock for the last year and really love it. It casts like solid but is hollow for splicing. Really the best braid we've used.
Ali, the only 8' or 8'6" spin casting rods I'm familiar with for poppers and surface
lures are United Composite's "deckhand style rods". Interested to know what

You will probably need to look outside the west coast manufacturers for a longer spin option. Do a little searching on the web and you should be able to find something to suit you.
I buy a Pen Fathon 40 two speeds to fish with jigs and live bait tuna, do you cast long cast with lever drag conventional reel? It is possile with free spool?
It's possible but a star drag will cast better and it's what we use for all of our lighter stuff. We will use a Fathom 40 for throwing poppers at bigger tunas.

I think that was Spider wire Camo Braid. Great stuff. We now fish Seaguar Threadlock and really love it.
For a spinning setup would 40 lb braid be enough and should i go straight braid or have a leader (surface iron wise)
40# would be ok for most fish but I'd hedge your bet and go with 65# plus it won't take so much line. Good luck.
hey Ali, for that Fathom 25N what size /weight rod would you pair that up with for the surface iron? Looks like you have a different rod than the other SoCal Arsenal video. Also, what was the braid and flouro size on that 25? thanks man!
PENN doesn't currently make a surface iron rod so I use a Phenix 909H. It's a little quick actioned for a new caster but once you get a feel for it it will allow you to make a variety of different shaped casts for different conditions. We usually cast 65# Seaguar Threadlock braid with 40 or 50# flouro. Give that Threadlock a try. It's not cheap but it casts a mile and doesn't backlash like other braids.

Will do. Look at the Fathom line of reels. They are by far the best bang for the buck out there.
Hey Ali! I just booked a spot on a party boat for Sept. 21st. All day trip. Going for yellowfin yellowtail and mahi. Can you give me any tips? I’ve never fished for any of these fish before
Call the landing a few days before the trip to see what the correct rig is (line size and hook size). Read up on selecting a good bait from the handwell. Listen to the crew. You'll have a blast.
I'm trying to add another setup in my quiver but having a hard time deciding. I've had a decent time the last year catching the school sized and medium yellow fin, yellowtail, and bonito with a BG 5000 running 30lb mono for full days out of SD. I was hoping to drop the BG 5000 to 25lb and get a 40lb setup but having a hard time picking a good option for a reel under $250. Any recommendations for reels, rods, or entire setups?
I don't think there's a better value in a spinning reel than a PENN Slammer. The new Slammer 4's are shipping very soon. Grab a 5500 when they come out. You'll be stoked. Id' pair it with a 7'6" Carnage 4 rod sized to match your fish.
Love the tips segment, my only suggestion is to pick up a higher quality mic. Don't get me wrong your audio isn't bad. Just a suggestion.

What are you thoughts of the Shimano butterfly flat fall jig as a substitute for the yo-yo iron or the Shimano waxwing as a substitute for the surface iron for yellows?
Both are great lures and absolutely work. We have been catching them on the Nomad Buffalo jigs which are similar to the flat fall with no issues.

You can use it, but it's far from ideal. You really need an 8' or 9' rod to throw the light lure as far as possible. We'd suggest getting a dedicated rod and reel set up.

They don't currently make a Surface Iron rod. Fortunately they aren't hard to find here in Southern Cal.

For yellowtail, 80# Seaguar Threadlock. The 80 Casts better than the lighter stuff and you don't need as much line to fill your reel.

Rod and reel set up look heavy as hell. Your not throwing that all day. I’ve been fishing straight braid with 4-5 ft leader and has been working great for 10 yrs now. Let me ask you this ? Why such the big ass reel when your on straight braid ?? My surface rod , 9ft cal star , heavy , with a accurate bx2 400. 300yrds of 65lb braid. I have not , till this day , been spooled or close to half way. I have the 50-80lb blue fins on this combo , no problem. With new technology , why big the big ass gear with straight braid ?? Pier fishing ?
Hey Joe, Not really sure what you mean. These are pretty much the standard for SoCal yellowtail fishing. The bigger reels provide better cranking power and faster line retrieves. You can absolutely throw a jig with a smaller reel but you have to wind like hell to keep it going fast enough for the action to work. This has nothing to do with getting spooled but the extra line makes it nice for bluefin fishing as well. We can catch them with smaller reels for sure but we feel these are the right tools for the job. If the smaller stuff works for you, go for it. Just have fun and you're doing it right.

I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.
