9:08 - I think the Genesis 3-button controller is really underrated when it comes to its versatility. Honestly, it's so easy to hit A + B or B + C simultaneously because of the button spacing that it's almost like having two extra buttons on the controller. When you look at how Mortal Kombat 3 (and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3) handled its controls on the 3-button controller, it becomes pretty evident that the only games that really have to suffer on the 3-button controllers are games with Street Fighter-style controls. In hindsight, it would've been nice to have Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II with HP and HP mapped to A + B and B + C respectively, as Genesis owners wouldn't have had to miss out on crouching low punches or pausing the games.

Great video! Good to know a lot of these. In all honesty though if you want an SNES controller that's compatible with the most stuff get an 8bito SN30 pro, It is supported by literally every switch game I haven't had one that doesn't work with it yet. It also pairs natively to the Switch if you keep it up to date so you don't need a dongle or anything like that.
27:00 Quake 2 on N64 was my first FPS game, and that's how I controlled it. I used the left and middle grips, moved with D-pad, aimed with stick, A and B switched guns, jumped with L and shot with Z. It worked very well, and I could never wrap my head around Goldeneye's inferior controls. You're totally playing it in the Quake 2 N64 way, which is perfect.

Man this is the greatest video I’ve seen in a while. The dedication and the effort can really be felt thru the screen, I can’t wait to watch to more from you guys!
Awesome video as always! Any chance you guys may do something for Genesis on the NSO? I feel a LOT of people don't understand why it's such a big deal as the only high quality Genesis re-release this gen due to not knowing how terrible the Genesis Classics Collection is, so much so that it never released in Japan. Playing Genesis on NSO with the 3-button controller is the best Genesis experience I've ever had outside of original hardware.
[Try4ce] I guess I can see that perspective. While we haven't tried it for ourselves since we don't have the expansion pack, the NES and SNES emulation on Switch is presented quite nicely. But just like many others, we're like, "do we need ANOTHER way to play Genesis games?" There are so many. But yeah I can imagine it being the best of what is currently easily purchasable. I doubt we'll do a video specifically on it though.
Taken me this long to get through the whole video but my God, MLIG never lets you down for thoroughly investigating a valuable topic. Also reinforced what an incredible retro and retro inspired library the Switch has. My wallet is going to take a pounding finding a lot of the physical versions on eBay.
Good lord I thought I was the only crazy fool to make and edit this long a video at 3 hours, but here you are days later nipping at my heels 🤣. Time to settle in this evening!
[Coury] been working my way through your video, watching a little each morning while I have some coffee. Excellent work, I can’t even imagine how long it took to gather all that material!
That was a ridiculous episode! Kudos guys for putting the time in and testing all these different games. I originally avoided these controllers, but after this video I may actually have to invest in a couple.
I really REALLY enjoy the flexibility of the Switch when it comes to controllers. Playing through Panzer Dragoon with a wireless Saturn controller.....unreal. Smash Ultimate with a GCN style Pro Controller. 2D style games with the SNES controller, shooters and beat em ups with the Saturn controller. It's a dream, somehow makes the Switch better.
I originally thought this video would be pointless but since first clicking I have watched it 3 times and payed way too much for a N64 Switch online controller on ebay and also picked up an 8bitdo sn30 pro for 2d games covering all my bases! Great work guys this has become one of my favorite productions of yours!
I have lost count now, I keep coming back for one reason or another. I got the Genesis controller straight from Nintendo on the way now (that felt weird to say). It is so odd having a brand new N64 controller, I thought mine were in good condition but nope, this stick feels waaaaay better. I also retrofitted my old 8bitdo Sn30 with rubber pads and buttons from a super famicom controller I had no need for it feels good but I am still gonna be on the lookout for the official SNES from Nintendo with Zl and ZR buttons.
I love the n64 controller, it's a 6 button snes controller with a analog attachment, it's just sad the n64 never programmed games in that way, but I appreciate I can take advantage of that with the switch, d pad movement with the left hand and right hand on the stick is amazing for so many game
While these controllers have limited functionality in other games; at least they work somewhat with they games you would play with outside the NSO service AND AT least you keep it. Great video guys!
I think this video perfectly encapsulates the need for button remapping. It's easy to overlook...especially when Nintendo allows it for their pro controller unconditionally! I hope they can patch in re-mapping support at the console/controller level, because then I may need to seek some of these out...
@@bland9876 It's even more important when someone has accessibility needs. But even that aside, why *don't* they let us do it? Oh well. It's getting better. I feel like in the GC days, there was usually NO remapping in most games, lol
Watching this video a bit late as I missed it on release, but lol your Tropical Freeze comments really resonated with me. I so want to love the modern ones but the feeling just isn't the same. People I've said that to think I'm crazy but glad to hear someone else feels the way I do about them. Great video with tons of info, and I appreciated hearing both of your thoughts on some of these titles as many I had not heard of till now. Thanks for the effort on this one and have a great new year!
31:58 As a huge Puyo fan, I love seeing it get talked about at all in videos like this. I just wanna see you guys talk about the Puyo Puyo series more extensively one day.
[Try4ce] As you can tell from the B-roll, I got a little addicted to collecting miscellaneous Puyo games because they're so danged cheap... it's fascinating how many there are...
@@mylifeingaming Yeah, it's insane. Even knowing that there's more official ports of Puyo 1 and 2 (separately, it's more than 20 each) than Doom 1 makes it even more nuts.
I went through the minigames when Superstars came out and found the ones that will give you trouble with the N64 Controller. Y'all already mentioned Dungeon Duos, but here are the others: Snow Whirled: 4-Player game that has you hit A/B/X/Y to spin your snowboard. Can only get a 180° spin on N64. Hide and Sneak: 1v3 game that has 3 players hiding behind scenery and the other trying to find them. If you are on the 3 player team, you can only pick 2/4 hiding spots. Ice Hockey: 2v2 game that has players scoring goals in a tiny hockey rink. Perfectly playable, but you lack the normal shot. Even if you pick N64 only, you've still got the potential for Hide and Sneak to pop up!
It would be great to have a list of all the games in the description of the video since there’s so many mentioned on here that I didn’t even know about and keen to checkout for myself
Thanks for making this, gave me something to listen to at work. I didn't even notice how long the video was till you guys joked that the video had gone on for too long
After some videos I often think of what trickery did Nintendo with the old analogue sticks. Came to a similar situation when comparing my original GameCube controller and a new aftermarket controller.
I did find a workaround to remap those online controllers. Connect them to a Mayflash Magic-NS adapter and they'll be read as standard Switch pro controllers.
I really enjoy using the n64 pad in lieu of the NES pad as it has A and B both big and easy to reach. For some reason that n64 D-pad feels better to me than the other Nintendo controllers.
35:14 I actually found that Celeste works phenomenally with the N64 controller. Because it's one of the few games out there that allows you to rebind the right analog stick. And map multiple inputs onto one button. Meaning you can map the C-Buttons to make Madeline dash in the corresponding C-button that you press.
Great stuff. My only feedback would be that you maybe talked about the 6 button Sega pad a bit too much, given that it’s not readily available in the West. Other than that, great video as always! Edit: Try is so wrong about the Retro DKC games. Still love you though Try!
Thanks for another great episode! I think John Linneman agrees with you on Yooka Laylee 2 vs DKC Tropical Freeze. I absolutely respect your opinions. I love both games, but Tropical Freeze edges it out for me. It might just be the atmosphere of the game for me, more so than the controls or momentum. Sure, it feels way different than the original DKC games, but I really don't think there's anything quite like Tropical Freeze.
I have been interested in different controller options, adapters, and "good" 3rd party controllers like Hori and 8bitdo thanks to all of your controller videos. The last few years I have enjoyed collecting controllers, and testing them in different applications like in this video. I know its not in the scope of this video, but for my money. one of the best options on Switch is the Saturn DIY pad from 8bitdo. It can do everything except the right stick (and capture?), and it has held up longer than my retrobit one, whose internal dpad broke on me last month. It can also be remapped for Sonic Mania :) Additionally, I am also very fond of the Pokken Tournament controller by Hori. The cupped dpad is just awesome, and I really started to see the value in this controller when playing through Cyber Shadow last year. It does have its limitations, but the bang for the buck on it is amazing.
I want these just to have them, they look wonderful and are a neat gimmick. But the retrobit Saturn controller is my go-to for retro games and it works with my retro pie as well. You don’t need remapping because it lets you hold buttons to swap the d-pad with analogue stick inputs and swap the confirm/cancel buttons. I think they almost perfectly replicated the feel enough for me. The MD 8bitdo are alright too
The D-Pad on the 8BitDo SN30 Pro and Pro 2 are one of the best I have ever played with. And the Ultimate Software for the Pro 2 gives you a ton of settings to customize. Buy a Pro 2 or the new Ultimate (if you prefer the Xbox style button/stick layout) and you will never look back, trust me. /Edit: The 8BitDo controllers are natively mappable in the Switch settings too.
I should add for Sonic games, that the only 3D sonic that work here is Sonic Forces with a SNES pad, although 6 button MD could work though you can't do the Wispon attack for the avatar. While Sonic Colors Ultimate would only work with a N64 controller due to requiring an analog stick.
37:00 I never would've expected to see a Toki remake! Especially because that was one of my favourite games on the Atari Lynx...and who even played that un-ironically?!
Thanks for making this video! I'm always looking for more games to play with my retro-bit 6 button sega controllers (they also have an L and R button and home/start/select) but I'll also take a few tips from this to play some SNES controller games. Another tip: today Klonoa Phantasy Reverie series was released and it also works with a Sega 6 button or a SNES controller :) you can set the controls yourself.
First time i saw a youtuber wearing the Gaming Historian tshirt. Norman should be proud :) Great content. Good job guys. Lots of hidden gems here like Mummys Demastered people probably missed as it came out so early in the Switch life. It is really a shame that so many games could work with these controllers if only we could remap the buttons.
I can't believe you guys makes me watching a 2-hour video about Nintendo Switch controllers. I don't even have a Nintendo Switch! (PS: You forgot to test and mention Horizon Chase Turbo, an awesome loveletter to old style racing games such as Top Gear and OutRun, made by the brazilians of Aquiris Studios)
I had to get the SNES controller from a scalper on eBay for like $130... that was certainly not fun, but honestly the SNES pad just feels so good for the games I have. It has actually provided the most enjoyment I got from my Switch (a recent purchase in spring of this year). In fact many games I originally bought to play on PS4 I now am double-dipping to get on Switch just because the controller feels so good. I do wish these were a little bit more readily available so they don't have to do what I did and resort to giving into gold-diggers online. I am currently waiting around for prices on the six-button MD pad to get a little bit more acceptable....
Also as an aside thanks a lot for the recommendation on Setsuna, I already have the PS4 version but was toying with the idea of picking up the Switch version because of the SNES controller to recapture that Chrono Trigger feel, but I guess I won't be doing that now :P I guess I can think of the PS4 version as an extension of Chrono Cross instead....
Off topic but I feel like Nintendo highly respects Sega ever since their epic battle of the early 90s. Official Nintendo Genesis controllers is on another level.
It's a real shame those controllers are so hard to get at this point, because this video convinced me to at least get the Genesis 6-button and the SNES controllers. MAYBE the N64 one if it ever comes back in stock again.
Imagine we get one of these based on the Saturn pad. How many of the games Corey showed would work wonderfully. It is by far my favorite to play schmups, I never thought about it but it might be related to the disc based dpad. And this wasn’t crazy enough. I would have watched an even longer video. Finally I had the luck to thought about the DKC TF as a new game. Because to me the sound design of the originals was an integral part of them. The satisfying “krong” when jumping over them is something I still miss.

My Life in Gaming alone probably worths like 13% of Nintendo stonks. These guys dedication is off the charts.
What I'm really getting out of this video is how many great modern "old school" games are on the switch, especially shmups.
Imagine if capcom did the SFII collection on N64 back in the day. Perfect conversion with no loading and a great 6 button pad!
@@telemaster you're making their bad decisions hurt even worse 😂 dude Alpha 3 or Darkstalkers on the N64
I hope they can patch in re-mapping support at the console/controller level, because then I may need to seek some of these out...
i dont understand how come some games dont give you the option its BS. I grew up with a gba/gamecube so i want A jump B shoot every time but nope
Awesome video guys, I'm really glad you made it and look forward to more great content.
Squidlit works with the NES controller! Super Squidlit should too.
I’ll need more beer for this one
I went through the minigames when Superstars came out and found the ones that will give you trouble with the N64 Controller. Y'all already mentioned Dungeon Duos, but here are the others:
Snow Whirled: 4-Player game that has you hit A/B/X/Y to spin your snowboard.
2 hours! You guys truly spoil us. Thanks for putting together such a comprehensive and beautifully crafted video 🙏
This has probably been said before, but on long format videos like this, editing the ad breaks in like a real TV show is really good.📺
The Retrobit 6 button Genesis controller is amazing. Has all needed buttons.
1:32:15 you’re crazy the 8bitdo is the answer to all of these questions but I understand not the point of this vid. Great one nonetheless.
I really like the game/controller presentation. Top left angled screen and bottom right controller action is perfect.
2 hours of MLiG? Now we're talking!
This has to be the best channel on TH-cam for gaming. You guys are nuts.
If you use the 8Bitdo USB adapter, you CAN remap buttons, although I've only tested this with the SNES Pad
You mean a SNES controller can be recognized as a Pro Controller?
Tri giving his dog cuddles at the end is what I really needed after all that.
I did find a workaround to remap those online controllers. Connect them to a Mayflash Magic-NS adapter and they'll be read as standard Switch pro controllers.
I love you guys. Two hours of pure gaming bliss.
The amount of work that went into this episode is unreal.
I really enjoy using the n64 pad in lieu of the NES pad as it has A and B both big and easy to reach. For some reason that n64 D-pad feels better to me than the other Nintendo controllers.
That dpad is most unloved especially given Nintendo tried to patent the cross design
[Try4ce] That's a really cool idea! Kinda like Mischief Makers but probably a lot more fluid in motion.
It can also be remapped for Sonic Mania :)
Additionally, I am also very fond of the Pokken Tournament controller by Hori. The cupped dpad is just awesome, and I really started to see the value in this controller when playing through Cyber Shadow last year. It does have its limitations, but the bang for the buck on it is amazing.
Wonderful indepth review/ opinions and THE SHELTIE IS ADORABLE!
The MD 8bitdo are alright too
This video feels tailor made to me, a controller and retro nerd. Thank you so much!
A chart/graph would be a quality-of-life godsend.
I love the amount of earnest time and effort that has been put into a video as eccentric and niche as this is.
You guys are awesome! Keep up the great work!
Spectacular, really awesome job!
2 hour My Life In Gaming video? just hook it into my veins!
First time i saw a youtuber wearing the Gaming Historian tshirt. Norman should be proud :)
Great content. Good job guys. Lots of hidden gems here like Mummys Demastered people probably missed as it came out so early in the Switch life.
It is really a shame that so many games could work with these controllers if only we could remap the buttons.
Ty guys, really loved this video. Any chance you can hook it into a PC and do a video?
I can't believe you guys makes me watching a 2-hour video about Nintendo Switch controllers. I don't even have a Nintendo Switch!
(PS: You forgot to test and mention Horizon Chase Turbo, an awesome loveletter to old style racing games such as Top Gear and OutRun, made by the brazilians of Aquiris Studios)
another great vid as usual, very pleasantly surprised by the 2 hour runtime
this must've taken a long time thank you for trying to help everyone with this
Oh geez 2 hours.. I need a bigger tub of popcorn for this one
I feel like I could down thrust all day long too. Nice video as always!
