- In this video, I'll introduce you to the tiny Nano e-spinner from Electric Eel Wheel and what you need to know to successfully start spinning with limited or no modifications to the spinner. Thank you for your comment, yes I'm starting to get to the stage with my mum where I'm changing from companion and chauffeur, to more in-depth caring, she's starting to forget conversations that we have or plans that are made etc, still random but still sneaking away. I have a good relationship with mum, and can make her laugh, those deep belly laughs which are good destressers. She still does look after herself, but she did decide to give up her driver's licence, so I'm her driver now. But she still does her crafts and when she forgets how to warp her loom I'll do that for her so until she forgets how to weave. See places on tv and Belgium looks like it is a very beautiful place, one-day I'll get a passport and maybe have my very first overseas trip out of Australia armed with my paints and my camera/phone😊. Yes it's difficult when living further away from mainstream services and groups, my nano 2 does work sort of, I get by, she just doesn't like going clockwise, so I use my nano 1.1 to do that then she has a holiday while nano 2 plys, I have gone through the trouble shooting info a number of times and I think it's about as good as its going to get. There is a French fellow who has designed some nice little espinners he's called Jerome, I think he's going through the Kickstarter program like Maurice does, if I can find his info I'll post it here for you incase you need help or maybe you'd like to see him a spinning wheels, they're just as cute as Maurices. I've been considering this machine for myself as a new spinner. For the price and the fact that spinning is only one of several fiber crafting activities I enjoy doing, i think that this machine would be perfect for me to try. Your calming voice, relaxed speech and knowledge give you quite a gift for teaching and these instructional videos. Thanks for sharing this helpful information.

It's nice seeing men as spinners, I spin and ply on the right arm only on my nano, and yes you can do the long draw, I don't find it makes much difference as far as quality of the yarn so I think it's personal preference. The only spinning wheel that it seems to make a difference on as far as which side of the arms you spun and ply on is my old Ashford traditional, it doesn't like plying on the right and I've got to have the belt crossed on the bottom, I've had it since I was 21 and I'm now 62. I love my little nano, as I've gotten older it has gotten harder to lug my treadle spinning wheel around, my mother who is 88, has the eew 6.0. My hubby walked in and asked what I was watching….He taught me how to sew with a sewing machine years ago, His brother was a true craftsman at sewing and crocheting. My grandmother added to that first teaching. There are specific methods, thensions, threading hacks, and a bundle of techniques along the processes. Because I started at a young age I understand that we used to learn these tiny details by sitting with a family member,. However….yarning is new to me and my family..therefore I need to learn from someone else. Thank you for teaching the details that we would have learned from a grandparent or mentor….if this was their craft. My family didn’t have yarn making craft…thank you for teaching the fine details….I’m grateful!!!!! I started crocheting at 11 and sewing at 15 and still there is so much to learn. I appreciated crochet during basketball games where I could crochet, and still watch the game. I got a lot done. However, learning to make my own thread and yarn is super interesting. Doilies and thread yarn are my favorite and most of what was available in the 90’s is no longer available. Now I want to make my own yarn for a multitude of reasons. On a side note, I’ve also grown up with Spanish families and teaching tortilla making has a bunch of detail and techniques that most would never know… every craft has it’s details. Let’s treasure ours!!!

I appreciate that you are looking at all of this from an engineering aspect. I am one of those who work better if I understand the functioning of the equipment and materials. I've had my Nano since August and have not had problems with it. But the more I understand why and how it functions, the more control I gain over my spinning, and the more consistent it becomes.

Re: 14:15…I’m grateful for your attention to detail. I’m a person who would have gone through each of the steps you did but may not have railed the science behind the answer. Thank you for figuring out how the bobbin loops work and how we can more efficiently work. My grandmother taught me just a few of these efficiencies in sewing and they have served me thousands of times…I’m grateful!!!!!

Hello. I just got my Nano 2 and it spins great! It’s my first spinner after drop spindling (and as luck would have it my husband ordered an Ashford Kiwi 3 for Valentine’s Day so I’ll have a castle wheel and an e-spinner!). My question is do you take the tension band off when you put the spinner away for the day? It seems like it would stretch if left on, but finding the right tension ever time I pull it out for the same project is messing with the yarn. Thanks for any help.

Re: 17.20… Could you thread left top, bottom right to get a cross pattern fill to the bobbin and thereby skipping the processes of transferring to an inner pull ball of yarn? Please understand I’ve not yet done this process and therefore may be asking a dumb question.
Great video, thanks for doing this. Question: why do you say you think the Nano spinner excels at fine weight spinning compared to thicker yarn spinning?
This is mostly due to the size of the motor and the wire yarn guides. It’s a very small machine and the motor doesn’t have a lot of torque, so it can be a challenge to get good take-up if you are spinning heavier or thicker singles. Increasing the tension to increase take-up can slow the motor in the original Nano. The motor was improved on the Nano 1.1 and the soon to be available Nano 2 improves it further. I only have experience with the original Nano, so far, but the Nano 2.0 should be even more capable. The other factor is the wire yarn guides. I like these a lot and have kept them on mine, but they can also struggle with heavier singles. Many users swap these out for 3D printed guides. Don’t get me wrong; the Nano is absolutely capable of spinning a plied, worsted-weight yarn, but it shines when it comes to smooth, fine yarns.
Can you provide a link or more product info for the on/off switch for your battery pack? Having trouble finding one in my searches online. Thank you.
Hi Margaret! If you search on Amazon (or Google) for Inline Switch for LED Strip, you should find lots of options. They usually come in a pack of 2 or 3 switches for under $10 USD. If you want the barrel plug that attaches between the Nano and the power cord, it should say 5.5x2.1mm DC jack. If you prefer the USB connector, just add USB to the search above and it should give you switches with USB connectors. I prefer the barrel jacks because you can use them with the original power supply or with a battery or power pack.

Where did you get your Suction Cups for your wheel?
Hi David! It’s been a while, but I believe I got them at Home Depot. They came in a pack of 6 with little hooks on them (the hooks just pop off). These didn’t have the size; they were rated for weight they would support. I think these were 1/2 or 1 pound. I’ve seen similar hooks at hardware stores, office supply stores, craft stores, and dept stores like Target. These ones are about 7/8” at the widest point (about 22 mm).
I am also a beginner. Actually trying to figure out if I want the Nano or another spinner. You used a BFL saying it had a long staple, in your opinion, what is the best roving for a first time spinner to use?
There are so many great options for spinners now. It’s hard to pick a best. BFL is often recommended for beginners. I think Corriedale or Polwarth are good options, too. I think more important than breed is prep. I would recommend starting well prepared, undyed roving. Dyeing can sometimes compact the fiber and slightly felt it, which can make it more difficult to spin, or at least changes how it feels to spin.
My speed switch is not doing what yours is doing. It’s stalling and clicking… and then it just stops turning. Even without the yarn. Any ideas?
Oh my I fixed it! The tiny white thing near the motor part where it spins was on the wrong way! Now it’s much tighter and spinning!
That little pulley tends to come loose on the Nano. On mine, I put a few fibers of wool through the center hole on the pulley and then put it back on the shaft. It was much tighter and hasn’t been a problem since.
Where did you get your suction cups?
Bolzasqueet I’m pretty sure I picked them up at Home Depot. They came in a pack of 6 with little metal hooks on them. The package didn’t say the size in inches/mm. Instead it had the weight they are rated to hold (I think these were 1/2 lb, or possibly 1 lb). But I’ve seen them at Office supply stores, Dollar Stores, WalMart, Michaels, etc. They’re pretty common. These are about 7/8” or 22 mm at the widest part.
I got the nano 2 and I've yet to get a balanced yarn. I've got it sort of spinning clock wise, but it'll only do the up take a little bit, and by then the tension band is wound on so much that it's becomes too bulky, and it still won't up take onto the bobbin. Then I tried it anti clock wise, which didnt work any better for spinning or plying, with the up take of the yarn onto the bobbin and so it's becomes over spun. I've gone through all the trouble shooting steps numerous times, I used sand paper on the bobbin ends incase they were to blame, checked that it wasn't getting snagged on anything etc. I emailed Maurice, and he suggested I go through the trouble shooting steps again, which I did with no joy, and he also suggested the forum to see if I can get help there. I got one for a friend and she just gave up on it she can't get it to take up yarn on the bobbin with spinning or plying either, it's become a source of frustration. My nano 1.1 is a dream and was looking forward to using the nano 2 and sharing the excitement with my friend so far it's disappointing. I'm not a new spinner to ewheels or spinning in general these wheels just won't draw the yarn onto the bobbin, I spinning then have to stop unkink the over spin then wind on by hand.
I’m a fan of the 1.0 and the 1.1, too. I’ve had no issues with my 1.0 and I’m still spinning in the original motor. The 2.0 was intended to be an improvement on the 1.0, but don’t think it worked out that way. It does have improvements; the tension knob is nice to have, the motor is stronger and the electronics are improved, but I think the material choice was wrong. People are seeing grooves cut in the orifice hole in short order, the lack of take up could be due to the maidens being too close together (there is a fix where you get the plastic hot and bend them outward to make more room for the flyer). The hooks on the flyer arm slip too easily (you can warm them up and squeeze them while the cool so the fit tighter and to be fair, the wire hooks on the 1.0 weren’t perfect, either, but I think they’ll outlast the plastic hooks). I hope Maurice will go back to the harder plastic on the next iteration. It’s still a lot of wheel for the money and I was able to use my 2.0, but I didn’t keep it and still use my 1.0 regularly. I would try the fix to spread the maiden arms a bit. You should not have to spread them at all when dropping the flyer into place. The bearings should drop right into the cradles. You may have corrected that with sanding the bobbins but I’d start there. Good luck. I hope you get it sorted.
@@uncosito thank you for a reply, I agree my 1.1 is a good cutie, with the nano 2.0, I have heated it up to reposition the maidens, but it still isn't helping, i went through all the other trouble shooting steps with no change in its performance. Could it have anything to do with the motor, I know I'm just reaching there, I'll certainly be using my older nano but I'll persevere with trying to fix my 2.0 and my friends 2.0. I got my Nano2 in November and have since spun up a storm… no issues at all. I’m sorry you have takeup issues. Perhaps you have one that’s faulty?
I have to say, I got mine through a reseller at a craft convention as I live in Europe and got to try it out there, right out of the box… and took that exact one home with me. I’d asked if I could try out the one I wanted to buy and they had absolutely no issues with my request. My only regret is that I should have gotten an extra set of bobbins right then and there.
@@eddavanleemputten9232 yes I love my nanos, yes I've got 2, the 1.1, and the 2.😊 Yes I got one for myself and one as a gift for a friend, and they have the same issue, which is they won't take up the yarn onto the bobbin. I've contacted Maurice and I've done all the trouble shooting things in the instruction book, and watched the trouble shooting video and followed the instructions from that. Mine works a bit better, the strange thing is the work sort of ok anti clockwise, but won't work clockwise. My friend has given up on hers, I persevered with mine and it's ok. Even though I've had trouble I'd still recommend the nanos to anyone asking about them, they are so portable and affordable. Plus I've found that as I get older my treadle spinning wheel gets heavier every trip to an event or guild group meeting so the little ones are great to carry around. Yes I know what you mean, I got the 6 bobbins with mine and I wish I had more but the postage from the US to Australia is quite expensive so I just have to be satisfied with what I've got. @@howlingwind1937 - I’m so sorry to read that the issues remain. As you’re living in Australia, sending the Na os to Maurice to take a look at isn’t really an option. I’m wondering if there isn’t a possibility of taking them to a craft fair at a reasonable distance from you if a reseller of the ba os is attending as well. They might be able to find out what’s going on. “Show and tell” often works best in troubleshooting. Some times it’s something really small.
I tremendously enjoy my Nano2 and really hope some day soon you find a solution! The main reason I got mine is that I wanted a wheel but I can’t treadle for more than a few minutes without experiencing nerve pain. Not very conducive to spinning unless it’s with an e-spinner. My house being so small and my budget being just about as small as my living arrangements, it was the perfect solution. Its portability is a bonus that I gladly take advantage of. That little machine has seen a lot of places over the past few months!
It looks like your pulley is not moving when you spin. I am having problems with nothing winding on. I have tried all sorts of things. Any suggestions? My pulley is too tight to come off, so I can’t adjust it in any way.
Do you mean it looks like the pulley is not rotating? It definitely is or the flyer wouldn't turn. My flyer did recently come loose and stop spinning, so I put a piece of thread on the shaft to secure it, but other than that, it's not really adjustable, per se.
my nano is making loud clicking sounds as it turns. it was not making that sound when I first tested it.. how can I make it sound smoothly again???
