If anyone is concerned about it moving, sew up a small square bag that will fit in the base and fill it with aquarium gravel making sure you can still assemble the base to the top before stitching it shut. I use that gravel for a lot of things because it seems to be heavier than pellets and definitely not as expensive. I use gravel bags to weight down my warps when working on my heddle looms for tension. I use them for gluing things to put pressure on them while drying. Just a suggestion. Works for me. I think I will buy this spinner. I have the Super Jumbo Ashford and it's too large for the first spins. Probably better for plying. This spinner however looks perfect. After all, it's twisting yarn with the same principle and I think it will be great. Love the bat you are working from. That will make a beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing.
Maurice (who is Dreaming Robots) is amazing to work with. He is really great about posting videos and answering questions and puts a ton of thought into the designs and refinements. He has very active Ravelry and FB groups, and his customers are also great about helping others who are just getting started on their spinning journey with his products. They are a very welcoming bunch. I've had my EEW 6 for just a couple of weeks and love it! He also has a great yarn counter, and is just finishing up a kickstarter for a conewinder. He publishes 3D printer plans for bobbins for free for anyone who has access to a printer and wants to make their own bobbins. I can't say enough about how lovely he is!
I have had an EEW 6.0 for about 9 months now and I love it ! I was skeptical at first but now I'm hooked. I keep it set up and whenever I have a spare 15 or 20 minutes waiting to let the dog in after his walk, I spin. I've done more spinning in the last 9 months than I did in the previous 4 years before that. I was renting a room when I lived in Oregon and it was such a hassle to drag out my wheel and find a place to set it up, spin and then have to put it away when I was done for the day. If I'd had the EEW 6.0, I know I would have set it up once and then been able to spin whenever I wanted. Maurice is so responsive to his customers and is extremely helpful when there are any issues. He also has files that can be downloaded so people with 3D printers can make their own bobbins and some other accessories. I don't regret my purchase for a minute, wish I had done it sooner. Good luck Trish !
I was so excited to see this pop up! I may have been talking to the you in the video while you opened it. 😂 I got the recommended battery to make it suuuuper portable, and it not only fits perfectly in the base, but it gives it a really good heft. The battery lasts forever and charges quickly, so I rarely have my spinner attached to an outlet. I loved how simple it was to assemble, and how it had little touches to make it more user friendly (like the magnet in the base to hold on to your orifice hooks). I find it easier to put the drive band on by hooking the bottom of it with my index finger and making a circle around the motor part (pulley?) with that finger. Woolee Winder doesn’t make an auto winder for them, but there are other brands out there who do! Enjoy!
3/27/23 thank you so much for this video! I watched it over and over and was successful in getting started with my EEL today! Wish me luck! Watching from the coast of Maine.
My first electric wheel was the Ashford ESW 3. I purchased an EEW 6 about 4 months later. I love both wheels, but will say, 90% of the time I use my EEW 6. I’m sure you’re going to live yours as well, Trish!! 😊
You probably know this, but the case on the bottom is made to hold a rechargeable battery which adds weight as well as making it easy to take outside and use. Love my EEW 6.
The base holds a battery so that you can spin without being tethered to a wall. It also gives the wheel more weight in the bottom. I got rid of the cotton brake band, and switched to paracord! I cut it to the length I wanted, pulled the inner strings out, braided three of them together, and use that as my break band. I made it extra long so that I just need to advance the band when it looks like it’s going to fray. I love my EE6. I also have a Daedalus Starling (their medium wheel) and a Sparrow (the one that is comparable to the EE6). I love their wheels, but they are an investment! They’ve recently purchased more 3D printers, so their waiting list for the Magpies should go quickly now. Hopefully by the time I’m ready for one, they’ll be available immediately. 💜
I would love to see your brake setup if it's not too much trouble. The cotton brake is already fraying. I know I'll need to replace it before too long.
I just got mine 2 weeks ago! I love mine so much. My only wheel! Yes, my husband helped me too. 🤣🤣 and I kept telling you where that piece goes, and how to put it on! 😂😂 I guess you didn’t hear me. But enjoy it!
I've got the EEW6 as my first and only wheel, and I absolutely LOVE it! The base is perfect to put a power bank inside. (I have mine velcro-ed in there). As for it's little quirks, they are notorious for chewing thru brake bands! That's why they send an extra. It has something to do with the seam on the bobbin from how it was molded. The extra spring that is included is just a tad bit smaller than the one that is already on it. The reason for that is to have lighter tension settings for spinning super fine yarns. And the hex wrench, I believe, is for changing out the motor if you ever need to replace it. There are some set up, troubleshooting and FAQ video links on the website. Happy Spinning everyone! Trish, I hope you enjoy your 6 as much as I do! ❤️😁👍
No need to use tape on the leader either. I just inserted the other end of the leader into the bobbin tube while assembling the bobbins and screwed the other end in place. Easy. I’ve been in love with my EEW6.0 ever since I bought it from the original kickstarter. ❤
5:40. I’m gonna wager it takes you under 8minutes to be spinning with EEL6. I carefully considered which espinner to get in 2021 and settled on the EEL6. it arrived on my birthday week and promptly went back ordered in stock. How lucky was this girl!?❤ I love the little gadget and I hope you do too. Ok, let’s watch the video……okay the timing starts after you get the fern package open. Ok the hook’s are different from 2021 aaaannnd the switch is improved! slip a recharging battery in the base and you have plenty of weight…. Thanks for the leader attachment tip! Ok, I was off by 10-12 minutes but ain’t it fun?!?!
from Gerry- So glad you like your new wheel. I just bought and Ashford jumbo e-spinner. It's huge and for me it is very different than a regular wheel. I am now working on a single and so far so good. I really want to do some core spinning. We'll see. I need a bit more practice. I've been spinning for 16 years, but this is taking some practice. I'll keep you posted on my progress. Have a blessed day.
I had a Nano, then hubby ordered me the 6. It arrived the day after the fire. I love it! I needed a wheel I could use without tiring the new knees and it's perfect for that. Still very portable. I think my Nano was too small for what I wanted. I put suction cups on the nano because I'd pull it off the table while spinning. I also burned out 2 motirs on the Nano in a year. I think they come with bigger motors now... But the 6, I've had no problems with it at all.
I just got mine today and I did the same thing putting together as you did. I just carded up some wool tonight and will be giving it a try tomorrow. I usually use a traditional spinning wheel so this will be fun.
Great video again, Trish, thanks. It’s funny, because people kept telling me I should get an EEW when I was in hospital for so long, but I never fancied one….until just now!🙈 It really looks great and your video was so useful. It was great to see exactly what was in the box and how to put it together. Oh dear, I’m already no dreaming of one! I have to have more surgery in April/May so…🤷🏼♀️😂😂😊🙏
I was one of the kickstarter backers for this. I had previously backed the Kickstarter for the smaller Nano as well, which is wonderful for spinning silk to use for mini punch needle. I tried the 6 at the New England fiber festival and loved it before I backed it. Maurice provides amazing customer service and appreciates feedback. Glad you like it. I use mine all the time and getting a battery to go in the bottom makes it so easy to bring anywhere.
I'm glad to see so many people saying the customer service is good for these. Thank you! I already have a portable power supply, but I will keep this in mind in case one isn't enough.
I just got one last month too and am really liking it. I ended up buying the battery pack Maurice recommends that fits really well in the base. I like the ability to use it with fewer cords attached and the freedom of not being dependent on a nearby outlet, but the weight of it in the base made a huge difference for me too, so I am basically leaving it in there even if I use it corded. It doesn't move at all for me anymore and is quieter as a result. I also found there are a few different videos out there on the dreaming robots channel that are helpful tips and tricks, etc. The facebook group is really helpful too.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my nano! I suction it to the dash board and spin in the car on road trips. It doesn't really hold enough fiber at a time but it is PERFECT to take with you on trips and to fiber festivals! I dont have the 6 yet but I am sure that it is in my future. I'm happy that you are happy. 😊
Thank you, thank you, thank you for getting this and reviewing. I started on your channel with weaving but now am wanting to learn spinning but equipment is prohibitive for me. I've done Navajo spindle before but I want the speed and practicality of a wheel and the "cheep" ones are twice the price of this. I look forward to your further review of it. I probably will get it, and it will be my only wheel for some time, but I didn't want the size limitations of the nano if this can do everything, which is my understanding of its possibilities....
I love my EEW 6.0. I think the instructions talk about putting the bearing into the bobbin is because sometimes, they come out in shipping. The base is made to hold a battery pack. You can find out what type is best on the DreamingRobots website or over on their Ravelry group if you're on Ravelry. I've found that the EEW 6.0 has a pretty substantial weight once you get a battery pack to put into the base. I have never had my wheel move around on me even without the battery pack though. I hope you have lots of fun spinning with your new wheel! I think you might be surprised by how much can be spun onto those bobbins. It's quite a lot.
I have one and I love it! Did you see that there are magnets to hold the orifice hook? And there are little notches on either side of the orifice to wind the wool around to hold it when you’re not spinning.
I've been staring at the EEW 6.0 for months. MONTHS. And I still haven't gotten it because I'm flip flopping between that and just saving up for a spinning wheel. I just started the process of getting braces at 33yrs old (ughhhh), so I think this has finally sold me along with the price point.
Daedalus announced today they are expanding this year and next so the waiting lists will soon be a thing of the past. I liked my E6, but I am so in love with my Daedalus.
I got the nano 2 as part of the Kickstarter. I am really enjoying it. Pretty sure they started off as 3d printed but they are now injection moulded. They are fun little machines!
I’ve been spinning on my EEW6 since November and this is the first I realized I’m supposed to have a bearing on the back of the bobbin as well 😂 this whole time I’ve been trying to figure out why it’s o much louder than everyone else says. I do love it though! And now I love it even more 😊. I’m so happy you got one and are pleased with it as well!!!
I didn't even hit play and had to just write...HOLY COW girl, can't believe you jumped in with both feet and bought one of these lol. I think prototypes may have been 3D printed but I think those are injection molded plastic. They didn't used to put those bearings in. The base has enough room to hold a power bank in there. I forgot those have the new on/off thingy instead of a foot pedal. You can get an autowinder for those but they cost more than the spinner. Don't forget, there are magnets on the machine that holds the orifice hook. It should quiet down but I did notice it's louder than my nano for some reason. Have fun with that!!
I love my EEW 6. The first power supply didn’t work but it was instantly replaced fuss free and it’s been great since. I haven’t used any other E-spinner but for the money I am very happy with it.
I just bought it at midnight. And the first video I find is yours. I over think set ups so I'm glad I found this video, cuz now I don't have to overthink you did it for me!! 😅 I'm excited 🎉
I’ve had my 6 for a while and I love it, I have the battery pack and it’s so handy: I’ve even spun at the hospital with it, if you are on the fence about buying one… get it, you won’t be disappointed
I’m so glad! I’ve had mine for over a year now and I just love it! I also have a couple of the nano’s. What is the nano 1.1 and the other is the nano two. You just can’t beat the price on these things! And Maurice is great, he has good customer service!
I agree. I wouldn't like to wait and not know when I was going to pay or get it. I love eew. I have the nano 2, and I love it. Now I want the one you have just gotten so I'm saving up x
Thank you for this video. Like a lot of people, I have been bouncing around this ewheel for some time now because of the cost, the material, etc. Now we all have a better idea of what they look/sound like. From what I've read in the comments, much of the noise will stop if you add a battery. Nice to know. Thanks again. Sherry
Got mine a few weeks ago-it’s so much better than the Nano and a ton of fun! When mine came, the motor was actually quite loose -that’s what the little hex wrench is for. Enjoy!
I love my EEW 6 ‼️ the base accommodates a talent cell battery so you can be completely portable. If you get the battery it also provides some nice weight. So excited you're giving this wheel a try 😊👍‼️
Awesome review Trish! I've been watching his products for a while and really wanted to buy one but was skeptical as well. I like the EEW 6.0 better than the Nano's, they seem too small, but everything I've read has been good reviews over all. What I like best is the portability of it and he also has a power pack he recommends if you're traveling. It will be fun to see what you spin on it! Thank you for doing this! ❤
Congrats on the new wheel! I love mine. It’s the only one I’ve ever spun on so there is that lol. I ordered some ceramic hooks because I kept catching my yarn on those thin wire hooks. I also bought a battery and it fits in the stand.
I literally just bought one of these too (just a few days ago) New to spinning, but totally in ❤❤ (using a drop spindle now, learning a TON). Waiting for the spinner to arrive. Bought the lazy kate too. Am really enjoying your channel!
I ended up getting one too in Dec. to use for plying. Unfortunately Ive had several issues, but it's not the norm. The first filling of my bobbin my tension band broke. I switched to a 3mm rattail and its working the best. I also got some different sliders from Snotermers Hub. Hope all goes well and it fills your need.
you can print out more bobbins with a 3 d printer. Also, buy the battery pack to make it portable. 12 v. I am pretty sure the battery pack can fit in the base.
I'm so glad you did a review on this. I've been looking at getting one of these for a while now, but wasn't sure about it. I've never had an electric wheel before and the options can be expensive and overwhelming. I typically spin with a support spindle or my Sidekick. Thanks for this video.
Dreaming Robots has several really good videos on TH-cam. The first one takes you through the set up. They also have great customer service if you have questions or problems. I got an EEW6 around Christmas this year. I hadn't done any spinning for 50 years LOL and I'm really enjoying it. Now that I'm feeling like I'm getting the hang of this, I'm currently spinning a braid that I got on the Fiber Love Diary website called spring rains. I saw a video of you and John dying BFL and he was choosing colors from words that someone had given you. I just had to get some and it is spinning up so well.
Thanks so much Trish, this spinner is on my wish list, and you have explained it so lovely. I am someone who has never spun, and I feel like i will be able to do it with this spinner, I am definitely getting one. Thanks again 🤗 Lesley
I just ordered the 6.0 today! I definitely would like to get the battery set up too. I’m in WA so have seen the Hansen’s for years, but WAY out of my price range (that cust svc experience with them is concerning too). I also like the HUGE bobbin size of the EEW 6.0. I can now ply a full 4 oz bump onto one bobbin which I can’t do with my conventional wheel.
I've had my EEW 6 for about a year and a half and I love it so much. From watching people spin with the Hansen and the Ashford, I know it's not exactly the same experience, but the EEW has done everything I've asked of it. I put it in one of those little rolling craft carts (so it can go anywhere I go) and put a garden kneeling pad under it to raise it up a bit, but it stays put beautifully. I did have to replace the brake band after 6 or 8 months or so and I forgot about the extra they sent, I just got some twine at the hardware store and it works just fine. The footswitch I have is the same as a sewing machine so I am super jelly of your new sleek one, maybe I'll order one, just so that we can be twinsies!🤪🤣🤣 Hope you love it too though I know it won't ever replace your Hansen. Happy spinning!!
I appreciate the information as I am always thinking of adding an e-spinner to my collection of spinning toys. This is one I will definitely keep in mind.
I've been wanting this for a while. Most of the components are available to 3D print (the company provides the patterns on a few 3D print sites) if you need replacements! I plan on getting one in the next year or so
I remember how terrified I was that I was going to break that drive band the first time. Now I just pop it right on. Have I mentioned that I LOVE MY EEW!!! I hope you will, too! Note that there are a couple of small magnets on the body of the wheel to hold your orifice hook. :D
This looks like a nice affordable option. I have only begun my fiber journey and, thus far, only using drop spindles. As many, a limited income is a huge factor... but...this might be something that we can afford with some saving. Thanks, Trish!
Before I bought my first wheel (a Lendrum dt), I bought an earlier wooden version of the Electric Eel wheel. I learned to spin on it and still enjoy it. Looks like the newest version has come a long way!
They also have an auto winder flyer available for the EEW6. I can't recall the name, but it's around the same price as the whole spinner. Those in the FB group that have purchased it have had positive reviews on it.
My issues with Daedalus were similar to yours. Also, it was very expensive (even though I only eyed on the Sparrow), and to bring it to Finland I would've faced several hundreds of increase to the price in the form of shipping, customs and taxes. I could buy the Eew 6 from inside EU so that was easier and cheaper. I bought an Ashford eSpinner 3 last spring, for my first e-wheel. I did not love it. So I ordered the Eew 6 to see if the reason for not loving the Ashford was in my head or in the wheel. Well, it was in the wheel, so the Big A got to go. Eew stayed - I love it. A couple of comments: The "manual" does not tell you that the twist switch also works as a on-off button. Also, on the body (in the opposite side of the twist direction switch) there are two magnets that hold the orifice hook. However, keeping the hook there isn't safe when plying (ask me how I know that...) I left the bottom case off and replaced it with a piece of vinyl plank. The wheel got lower and thus fits in a smaller bag. I have never had any issues with the wheel travelling. Not on any surface. It was a different story with the Big A, it liked its travels, even on slow speeds. Also, getting the settings right is easy with Eew, not so with the A. I love how light and clever and portable this wheel is, especially compared to the very clumsy and heavy A which also has very awkward bobbins that don't fit anywhere. In the Fb there's a group for Eew (Electric Eel Wheel Group) where you get great help if you run into problems. But also, Maurice handles customer service very well, eagerly and fast. By the way, I love watching how you and John interact. It's just so sweet and funny and makes me happy, too. And yes, I know that sounds weird but I'm weird and not bothered by that. So please don't feel awkward for me saying that 😅
Oh they're so cool I want one soon I just barely got my Etsy shop up so I got to wait till someone buys a blanket but I am almost done with that s blanket so hopefully I can get all my business going so that I can actually afford to get one
I love my EEW 6 so much! I was really hesitant to get an electric wheel but I love spinning on one so much. I got the lazy kate and I will say you need something to anchor it to or it will slide around on you when you ply, it is way too lite. I will say I had to adjust the way I spin some because I am a puller and I kept wearing out the brake band. If you aren't a puller though, that probably won't be a problem. I hope you love it as much as I do, it's nice and compact so I can spin on my work breaks!
If anyone is concerned about it moving, sew up a small square bag that will fit in the base and fill it with aquarium gravel making sure you can still assemble the base to the top before stitching it shut. I use that gravel for a lot of things because it seems to be heavier than pellets and definitely not as expensive.
I can for an entire 4 oz braid on a bobbin!
It can hold up to 8oz., of course that depends on the spin and tension.
I have one and I love it! Did you see that there are magnets to hold the orifice hook? And there are little notches on either side of the orifice to wind the wool around to hold it when you’re not spinning.
That's so cool that you got the EEW 6.0. I think Maurice is great and I love that he's trying to make spinning accessible for everyone.
I've been staring at the EEW 6.0 for months. MONTHS. And I still haven't gotten it because I'm flip flopping between that and just saving up for a spinning wheel. I just started the process of getting braces at 33yrs old (ughhhh), so I think this has finally sold me along with the price point.
For brake band buy nylon cording open it up and use a piece of that for your brake band. A tip that made a big difference.
Glad to see your smiling face and videos😊
Daedalus announced today they are expanding this year and next so the waiting lists will soon be a thing of the past. I liked my E6, but I am so in love with my Daedalus.
Really happy for you, I hope you enjoy it.
I just bought a Roberta E-Spinner. It's coming any day now.
Wonderful! A new wheel is always great!
I have a nano but bought an Ashford electric wheel and love it!
You can attach it to a surface through the holes on the four corners
Enjoy!
I have an EE6 and love it! Glad you love yours too.
Where did you get the ceramic hooks?
I've wanted one of these forever. Thank you for your honest review. Soon... after this move is over in a week. :)
Glad I could help!
I actually have a Nano and only used it like 4-5 times at most glad that they are trying to improve their brand and products!
Thank you for the motor pulley instructions!! I was stuck till i watched
I literally just bought one of these too (just a few days ago) New to spinning, but totally in ❤❤ (using a drop spindle now, learning a TON). Waiting for the spinner to arrive. Bought the lazy kate too. Am really enjoying your channel!
I got my eew 6 in December and so far I really love it. I got the lazy late to and it needs to be anchored somehow because it’s way to light.
I haven’t spun in at least six months but now I want to pull my EEW6 out again 😊
I am surprised that it isn’t very noisy. I like the size of the bobbins too.
It's pretty quiet and I have been told that adding weight to the base makes it even quieter.
I'm so glad you did a review on this. I've been looking at getting one of these for a while now, but wasn't sure about it. I've never had an electric wheel before and the options can be expensive and overwhelming. I typically spin with a support spindle or my Sidekick. Thanks for this video.
Love my 6.0! So glad you got one. The base holds the battery, and the extra weight is just enough to keep the wheel in place.
Love your podcasts 🥰 many thanks for sharing them 🙏💙 there are a couple of magnets on the left for your orifice hook 😊 happy spinning
I sure love the BFL, and John's dye jobs are remarkable.
That is quite a large stash behind you. :) My mind is reeling with inspiration!
What a cool gadget
I love mine! Glad you got one.
Me too!
Had my EEW 6.0 since late May. Love it.
Thanks so much Trish, this spinner is on my wish list, and you have explained it so lovely. I am someone who has never spun, and I feel like i will be able to do it with this spinner, I am definitely getting one. Thanks again 🤗 Lesley
Congrats on your new wheel!
Thank you for posting this video. I have been on the fence about whether or not to get one of these but after seeing this I will be placing my order.
Most helpful video. Many thanks to you and John.
Our pleasure!
Hello hello!! New toys are so fun!!!
Thanks so much for all the detail. Been thinking about this wheel as my first non-spindle tool and this info is super helpful
Very welcome!
I appreciate the information as I am always thinking of adding an e-spinner to my collection of spinning toys. This is one I will definitely keep in mind.
I need that spinner. I have been saving up. I cant wait.
I hope you enjoy your new wheel! I like how quiet it is. I'm glad John was able to fix the Hansen.
After I got used to mine I really like it.
I've been wanting this for a while. Most of the components are available to 3D print (the company provides the patterns on a few 3D print sites) if you need replacements! I plan on getting one in the next year or so
Interesting!
I recently got the Nano 2. Had some initial problems that got resolved. I really enjoy it!
I remember how terrified I was that I was going to break that drive band the first time. Now I just pop it right on. Have I mentioned that I LOVE MY EEW!!! I hope you will, too! Note that there are a couple of small magnets on the body of the wheel to hold your orifice hook. :D
Now I can't wait to get mine xx
I absolutely love my 6!!
Hi! Sent you an email, but got a message that your email is on vacation. Glad you enjoyed the EEW 6. I love mine.
Love my eww 6.0 :)
Hope you enjoy yours as well!
My motor went out within the first 100 days and got a new one sent no problem.
A couple of comments:
The "manual" does not tell you that the twist switch also works as a on-off button. Also, on the body (in the opposite side of the twist direction switch) there are two magnets that hold the orifice hook. However, keeping the hook there isn't safe when plying (ask me how I know that...)
I left the bottom case off and replaced it with a piece of vinyl plank.
So please don't feel awkward for me saying that 😅
I bought my first e-spinner from Imagine Robots and this has made me much more excited to get it working. Thanks!!!
I’ve had my eye on the EEL 6. My ankles this winter have been aching so I haven’t been able to do any spinning
So far, so good!
This was great to see considering I am always hearing about this item.
Oh they're so cool I want one soon I just barely got my Etsy shop up so I got to wait till someone buys a blanket but I am almost done with that s blanket so hopefully I can get all my business going so that I can actually afford to get one
I'm sure you'll be there in no time.
I will love seeing you spin if it lives up to your standards it might be something I down the road may be interested in
Hopefully today I'll be plying on it today!
I believe the base allows for a big usb battery, that will weigh it down. Also a rubber trivet under it works great
I LOVE my 6.0.
So far I'm loving it too.
Love my EEW 6.0. Hope yours works as well for you.
Here in the UK the only electric wheels are the EE and ashford ,love my ee6 and nano, there’s load of 3d printed parts you can get
