- Hello! Welcome to Mart's Garage. In the last video I showed how easy it is to buy a car. Now reality kicks in and I see just what I have taken on. It will be an ongoing project at Mart's Garage for a while. So, in tonight's video I carry on giving it a good look over and then check what it would take to make it run. So follow along and witness the highs and lows of new project ownership.

It's cars like this that helped make Britain years ago. And without people with your patience and skills willing to preserve them they will undoubtedly vanish. Brilliant you are bringing this rare 2 door example back from the brink of extinction! Looking forward to seeing it's progress!

My father brought the same type of car that you worked on in 1955 that has" Ford Motor Ltd" stamped on the side chrome mount. It was Ford Prefect 4 doors Sdn. The motor was simple to rebuild and we had no accident since it new, it was a nice car that took the whole family everywhere we want to go for 16 years.
I had a 100E way back. Dark Blue, 2-door, 1172 side-valve, 3-speed box, vacuum wipers. It came from the Isle of Man, registration 3618 F. By the time I came to sell it, I had fitted the 107E engine, gearbox, electric wipers, wider wheels and tyres, discs all round. I had the engine tuned and better rockers. It went like shite with diarrhoea, I remember scaring a Mustang on the A40, by overtaking it at over 70mph. I was sad to sell it, but it was replaced by a Lotus Cortina Mk 1, so I had the best car Ford have ever made.

I have a 62 consul and all mechanical parts look the same so available and cheap so good luck withit.
Good one Mart. Those back cylinders may come around with a bit of running and perhaps a bit of upper cylinder lube or ATF/Acetone or the like down the bores. You look well pleased. I have some mint original advertising brochures for the 100E Anglia, Prefect, MK1 Zephyr and Zephyr Zodiac of the same area. My Grandfather was a company Secretary in the 1950's and purchased all their cars. I remember cutting the pictures out of some of the other brochures when I was a kid, but not those Ford ones which I'm now glad I left alone.
Yeah, I know it's a weld-a-thon but it's got a lot of potential. Lovely looking little cars, I remember when I was a kid you couldn't move for them but they were vanishing by the late 70's. I love the early ones like this with the early dash and tail lights. The vacuum wipers are less than ideal but I guess it is what it is. Subscribed!

I think the Peterhead key ring is a clue to the amount of rust in your 100e. I grew up on the East coast and watch my father's car dissolve in the street out side and that was about 450 miles south of Peterhead. But still the little flathead runs and your work did remind me of 1970s Saturdays in my parents driveway, good work for you and good memories for me.
Hi Pat. Yes the seaside environment did it no favours. It takes us all back to parents driveways and basic hand me down tools.
Amazing all the lights worked, gonna be a fun project to watch. Looks like a pretty good old car. You will be an expert body man after the year of welding
Enjoyed this one. Always interesting to see if they'll start. When you hooked up the battery the first time, I was holding my breath. My luck would have been smoke from everywhere..HA. Good job, fun project.
A good old 1172cc side valve, with a 3 speed box. The vacuum tank for the wipers seemed to be missing. I used to drive my grandfathers Ford Popular.
Hello Chris. The vac tank is there, it's tucked away inder the left hand front wing. Thanks for watching. Glad it stirred some memories.
@@MartsGarage thanks, I thought it was more exposed. My father learnt to drive in the early 70’s after being given the car. But my father was born deaf and couldn’t hear the poor engine! The engine was abused badly, I learned how to fix it at 13 years old, now I’m retired from Military power trains in Canada.
Good that it runs but,......think that the first job should have been....put some oil on the drivers door hinge!!!!! Saves spraining the door
Hello Paul. I didn't use the drivers door too much and it was oiled on the second day. thanks for watching and worrying about the little car.

Wow, the 100e was my first ever car 1172 cc flat head engine three speed gearbox vacuum wipers if it was raining and you put your foot down the wipers stopped working it was brilliant car
Takes me back 60 years, my mate bought one for £10 and I taught him to drive, I was a year older. This one is doing well, his had far more rust, floor was 1 gallon oil cans flattered and pop riveted in, no rear wheel arches, rain was sprayed up and rained from head lining. Top speed was 55 mph, downhill with a tail wind and following smoke screen. You keep a rag on the parcel shelf for going up hill in the rain, put your hand under the dash top and you will find the wiper link bar. Going up hill you loose vacuum and your vacuum wipers, so you grab this bar and manually operate them. Could tell you many stories about that car, but one thing it never failed to get us home from the pub, best of luck with it.

@patfrancis496 maybe 100% correct, I live in Buckie, another coastal fishing town up on the north east coast of Scotland, and not a million miles from Peterhead either, and can attest to the ''sea air'' in not being too kind to cars, lorry's, buses and all things metal🤣🤣🤣

Great little project Mart. I had a 1959 100E Anglia in the late seventies. Body was mint, especially compared to this one. Quirky but fun little car. My memories of driving it was the massive gap between second and third gear and the vacuum wipers slowing and eventually stopping on a long uphill run. When I first got it the it would get an uncontrollable shimmy in the front end which I traced to missing steel balls around the peg in the steering box. No sign of them anywhere! Converted it to negative earth so I could fit a modern cassette player. Repaired the rust holes in the fuel tank caused by the water soaking into the underfelt that they put between it and the boot floor.
Even though we couldn't see you I felt the smile on your face when the engine fired and ran. I was also yelling at the screen when you started to take the nut off the coil wire with no plugs in!
Just have to start channelling Kyle and Scott and the metal work will be a walk in the park.
@user-xq9rc6wu5x I was reading the comments and thinking what to put when I came across your memories. Same year, same model and in the late seventies, same quirky little problems. I even fitted a cassette player to impress the girls. Got away with no rust under the tank but she failed the MOT in 1980 due to corrosion under the sills. Still have the Haynes manual with the wiring diagram and some paperwork. Bought it for £120 in '76 and sold it for same in '80. Purchased the original reg a while back for quite a bit more than I first paid for it, but it was my first car so what the heck!

One of the first engines I worked on as a young boy mechanic a long time ago brought back memories.
Hi! Yeah, it's bringing back lots of memories for me too. These were already old cars when me and my friends were dicking around with them aged 16, nearly 50 years ago.

That's it, Mark. I usually assess the work, order what parts I can and launch into the worst jobs first.
I can see I would have a different starting point. Vac all the crap and rust out and then pressure wash everything. Probably blow a lot of holes in that car! I would have expected fire with the electrical and all the bare wires. I would have expected bugs and mice to be in open carb and cooling system. I guess you checked it had 30 year oil to run it.
What a neat little engine with what 35 HP or Less?

Nice one Mart, Getting the engine started is a milestone. I would say looking at the key and the door lock 150K is not all faulty ;-). Regarding the old car MOT in Sweden, you have to pass it once then you can drive until 2099 without inspections. Unless the Police do an on-the-road inspection :-(
Congrats Mart !! You're on your way already !! Just one quick observation I would offer: Watch out for that little cooling fan. Looked like you were getting perilously close to it with your elbow when you were feeding the carb. That engine sounds quite good doesn't it ???
Noting the size of that spark at the coil, I would GUESS that coil is supposed to have a resistor. 1.5 ohm coils need the resistor/3 ohm coils do not if memory serves. These days, those aren't such a good odds. ;o( Looks like a little temporary fuel supply and you will be able to test "motivation" next. ;o) GOOD LUCK !!!

I know what you mean about getting rid of car parts - I had a load of Mk3 Astra parts and sold them thinking I'd never own another Mk3 Astra. I now own two...😫😂

Hi Harold. Just trying to keep it more or less stock. Fixing what needs fixing and making safe to drive.
Almost too easy to make smoke with the engine... Working lights? Is this car Pre Lucas wiring harness? Keep banging on her Mart. Brakes. Cooling. Fuel. Get er running , driving first. oh , Drive the T Bird too. I can hear it whine a bit for attention I think?
Hi Tony. There are a lot of Lucas components. I think the headlamps are Lucas but the other light units are Butlers. Yes it is a shame to have the T-Bird just sitting there. I might put it back on the road later in the summer. No promises though.

Not bad but some of the earlier parts are harder to find and more expensive when you do find them. I've been quite impressed with parts availability to be honest.
I was betting you were going to have to resort to the dreaded” Mortske Tap” Mart.
My dad had a 100E Van. Oh and it's British not English. English is a language. British is nationality.
"English Ford" is a term commonly used by Americans to distinguish these from their domestic models. Thanks for watching.
