  • I bought an abandoned classic Jaguar Mk10 that has been sitting for 15 years to ask the simple question: can us regular folk revive a classic car? Will this old car run and drive?

      If you compare piston size (and if there is indeed more than one on each caliper) on original calipers v ones fitted, you might find a clue. If new calipers are twin pots say with larger pistons as well then maybe the MC isn’t pushing the volume of fluid required. Just a guess.

    When I got outside the shop there was this fabulous Mk 10 Jaguar. To me sitting in this was like being in an aircraft cockpit and the wonderful sound and the comfort was astounding.
    Never had one but loved them ever since so all good wishes on the restoration of this beauty!

    Working on an old Jag in that condition is WAY different to a USA V8. For starters you can walk into an O'Riellys and get almost anything for a pushrod V8. You picked an almost specialist vehicle to try it out on. We owned a MK10 for years I love them, theres 2 for sale here in WA Western Australia right now.

    Absolutely brilliant video. The Mk10 is probably one of the most underrated Jags ever made, they were too big for the UK buyer but not quite large enough for the US. Yours has got the proper ‘E-type’ triple carb 4.2 and the XK engines are quite robust provided they’re maintained correctly. The problem is champagne lifestyle on lemonade budgets and Jags are so cheap to buy but not to run.

    It all depends on the car, its age, and how well its previous owners took care of it. My uncle had 3 cars from the 1930s (Morris, Singer and Humber) that he restored from junkyard condition. He also had a 1950s VW bus as his daily driver. My cousin had a Messerschmitt and a Heinkel bubble car that he rebuilt in the 80s. My grandad had a 1960 Austin that he drove everyday until he died. I bought at 63 3.8l Mk10 in 74 for £66 and it was a complete rust bucket, but it would do 100mph and gave 17mpg. I was stopped going into work by the security police with 7 people all sitting on seats and I wasn't questioned about it. It was metallic grey with red leather interior and no seat belts (before 66), it steamed up in the rain, the brakes were really terrible, the steering was +/- 1/8 turn to keep it on the straight and narrow and I sold it 1 year later for £75, a profit. I wished I could have restored it, but it wasn't work doing, too much rust, but I enjoyed it immensely.

    Brilliant video :) Actually, Jaguar did have a prototype MkX/420G at the time in which they put the then newly acquired Daimler 4.5 Litre V8 engine from the Daimler Majestic Major Saloons. That engine was the bigger brother of the 2.5 LItre V8 used in the SP 250 and the Mk2-derived Daímler 2.5 Litre V8. They found that it indeed performed better than their own straight six. However, Sir William was having none of the embarrasment of downgrading the XK engine so the in-house V8 Jaguar project was cancelled. I'd love to see a 420G retrofitted with one of these Daimler 4.5 Litre V8 engines but, unfortunately, they are quite rare.

    When you bleed brakes, always bleed the caliper furthest from the master cylinder first, then work your way to the one closest. This prevents air being pushed into brakes you've already bled up.

    I haven’t finished watching your maintenance of the braking system yet but years ago I had a problem with the hydraulic braking system on a motorcycle & someone passed on a tip to me that worked perfectly. If you already know this tip, fine, but you may have viewers that it could help.
    No matter how I tried, I could not get a really good solid ‘feel’ to the twin disc brakes on a motorcycle that I had restored. The brake worked but as I was slowing down the brake lever was gradually becoming ‘softer’ until it had reached the handlebar & ‘pumping’ was required. I had tried everything that I could think of but I was left with a spongy feel to the front brake. A knowledgeable gentleman said “apply the brake & fasten the brake lever back to the handlebars so that the brake is on. Top up the master cylinder & leave it overnight.” I applied the brake & zip tied the brake lever to the handlebars, topped up the reservoir & left it overnight.
    Without much hope, the next morning I cut the zip ties off to find that the front brake worked perfectly & had a wonderfully sound feel to it. I had similar trouble with a Reliant Scimitar hydraulic clutch. I applied the clutch & held it applied with a piece of broom handle between the pedal & the drivers seat. It worked a treat. I can only think that it holds a valve / passageway open in the master cylinder, that allows trapped air to return to the reservoir. If it helps one person, it will have saved an indescribable frustration. Richard.

Brakes seized and probably clutch seized. I was amazed to see it start up and then drive some. Fair play to you for taking it on! Great content and very well put together.

    Whether the car is positive or negative earth the starter will spin the correct way. Generally you can just swap between the two and all you need to do is disconnect the clock (which is positive earth and if it still works which is unlikely it won't if you change to negative earth) and re-polarise the dynamo (look up on line how to do this its really simple). Personally I would change it to negative earth when you get into it as the risk of having it positive earth is that if you use anything in the cigar lighter (sat nave etc.) or jump start it or use it to jump start anything else then then you might cause damage. I have one Jag thats positive earth but only because of its history and if I had my time again with it I would swap it over which I might still do. Love a MK10, the absolute daddy of Jags and one I would love if my garage was large enough!

    Did the same on my E Type in Australia that had spent 30 years under cover under a tree. Sorted the float valves and distributor and it too just fired up! Had plenty of old Jags and nesrly all of them can be persuaded to run like this if they have no underlying mechanical issues. The only problem i have was with a Mk7 that i did get to start after rebuilding one seized carburettor due to water damage that signalled probable head gasket blow many years in the past. Had to pull the head and it was so corroded I had to replace it. Love watching people resurrect old motors, well done!

    I enjoyed watching all of the things that beset you! And your positive attitude never waned. The best bit of this video, was your surprise to see the engine fire-up! I once rode as passenger in the MK 10, and I drove a Mini at that time. I couldn't believe just how BIG the MK 10 Jag was from the inside! Your journey has just begun, and I just have to write that (if I were you), at this point in time, try and get the Jag on a Tilt Tray Truck, to a garage where the car can be raised. I would not spend another cent on that Jag, until the whole underside has gone through some inspection. I reckon that there is a lot of us that had aspirations to restore a Classic, and many have lost interest and failed in the process. I started with something simple - a 1971 Beetle which was purchased as a rusted burnt-out wreck from a Car Scrapyard in 2004. 20 years later, I'm still driving this Beetle daily. 5 years ago, it was converted to 100% EV, and is Tesla-powered. the Beetle goes to Car Shows, and looks new. I am now 75.That's my story. Hope to see a follow-up on your Jag. Greetings from Australia

    Your modification with the rubber pipe with the jubilee clips on the braking system is where I think your braking problem is! There be expansion under pressure!

    • @noahnovotny2100
      @noahnovotny2100 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      There shouldn’t be much pressure going back to the reservoir as it is on the inlet side of the master cylinder. It’s actually advised to bleed brakes with the reservoir at atmospheric pressure (the cap off/cracked open) to prevent a vacuum being created and sucking air back into the lines, so it is not a loss in pressure on that side of the system causing the issue.

    • @NotEconomicallyViable
      @NotEconomicallyViable  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The rubber pipe with the jubilee clips is on the low pressure side and is how it came from factory. I was just replicating what was in the parts diagrams and service book.

    At last! I spotted the Mk10 quite few videos back and commented about it buy you didn't respond which was amusing. You could retro fit an AJ6 engine into it OR a 3.2L or 4.0L Jaguar V8 out of a rotten XJ8. You ideally need an oil pressure gauge to give you an idea of engine condition. It should read 40lbs on idle.
    My dad bought a BRG Jaguar 420G in 1973, that car gt me into Jaguar's BIG TIME. Have had ten and today I own a 1975 XJ6 4.2L and a 2001 3.2 XJ8. One day, I intend to buy a Mk10/420G! Looking forward to more videos on this car.

    The brake pipe layout has been done to do away with the servo. Where are the bleed nipples on the the replacement calipers. if they are not above the piston area then remove the calipers from the disc and hold them so that the nipple is highest and there is nowhere above it for air to remain in the caliper body when your bleeding them. l hope that makes sense.

I can relate, when I picked up my ‘70 Deville, it didn’t take me very long to realize that the only thing the car needed was, EVERYTHING and bringing her back to Cadillac standard mechanically, would be quite the task well into my 60’s, lol oh and BTW, great job man. 🔧🏎️

    If those SU carbs are like those on the TR3 Triumph and early Volvos, I think they take some trans fluid after unscrewing the brass tops. I used a Uni Syn tool to synchronize the carbs, but you can come close by holding a hose from the inlets to your ear and listening to the air intake. You have done a remarkable job so far.
