  • Hello and welcome to Spottedmotors.
    In this video we take a look at this classic Ford 100e with a twist.
    Its powered by a Mazda MX5 engine and to help it along a but more, its mated to a Garrett turbo to really make this retro Ford a proper Sleeper.
    Massive thanks to Danny for letting us look round and drive his green machine.

    They were called"English Ford's", here in the US. Mom had a 57 station-wagon version. It had a tiny flat-head four, and three-speed on the floor. Kept it till 59, being a Ford Fairlane.

    My first car was a 1957 e100 that my father had sold a set of new Gulf tires to the owner. He returned two weeks later asking if we would give him his $100 back (that was what a set of 2 ply 13” tubeless tires cost back in 1964 and that included mounting and balancing). Well my father told him that he could not do that because he could not resale the tires as new to recupe his money, not to mention the labor of taking them off again. So the guy said that he would take a hundred dollars for the car because the r were engine was needing a rebuild. I was turning 16 in a few months so my dad agreed and told me to park it on the back corner behind the tire changing area and that I could only work on it when I was coughed up on my school work and my shift at the station.
    Our neighbors owned an auto parts and machine shop. So it only took me about a couple of hours to take the motor out and call them to pick it up. Luckily all of the bolts were SAE so that there were no special English tools required. But what was required was patience, it took our 3 months for the machine shop to get the rebuild kit and then a month to work it into the schedule. As you can imagine I was anxious to get it back, so I spent the time modifying it. Let me say that even though I had never seen this car before, the flathead engine was nothing new to me and my father. Our service truck, which was totally restored from the frame up, was a 1948 Ford F 150 with a flathead V 8.
    Well the little e100 was s powder blue paint that was faded and dull and worn through in place on top of the finders, so my first modification was to paint it. I choose Corvette Candy Apple Red Metal Flake, but in those days it was an enamel paint, and I had to water sand the dead paint off multiple times, paint it with a primer and when cured from sitting in the Florida sun, water sand it multiple times. Then came the time to spray the finished enamel. Luckily there was a retired man who knew how to paint and he gave me instructions and encouragement. It actually came out pretty good with on on or two runs that were not obvious until you looked closer.
    While I waited for the engine, I took the front bumper off and tossed it, jacked up the front suspension a little, put a set of the largest 13” tires on the rear, and on the inside I put a pair of fighter jet seatbelts that I bought at the surplus store, replaced the shifter knob with a brass small piston from a chainsaw, put a tube type radio in the glovebox sitting on a sling for shock absorption, wedged the speaker between the shifter and the firewall, and finally I could not afford a tachometer, but I took a pressure gage off of an old radiator cap tester that was being replaced and I drilled a hole in the water pump and tapped it and ran a 3/16” copper tube through the firewall and up through the dashboard and mounted the gage there on the right side of the speedometer. So when the engine revved, the gage went to higher pressure until it reached the “Redline”. It was hilarious as it made a clicking noise as it wound up and down. But it was a different time and this was a step above the Soap Box Derby and luckily I lived in a small town and had minimal encounters with heavy traffic and large trucks. Although the little 26 hp engine would scoot the car along at over 70 mph on a flat mile or more stretch of road.
    My parents must have realized the danger that this small car entailed, because they made me sell it and get a baby blue 1955 Chevy BelAire with a Blue Line 6 cylinder engine just before I graduated and went to college. I assume that my car might have been brought here by a military person who ordered it with left hand drive? I never knew of a Ford dealer who sold them.
    Well that is my story about my English Ford. The only other one that I saw was in a car magazine and it had been made into a dragster and had to be driven from the back seat….

      This hands down is my Favourite comment ever on TH-cam. Thank you so much for sharing your story and it honestly inspires me and also take me back to being young and cheaply modifying cars.
      And wow a 55 Belair. What a beautiful car. Was it a 4 or 2 door.
      Again thank you so much for taking the time to write this comment. It's made my Day

    • @clanrobertson7200
      @clanrobertson7200 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My 55 BelAire was the same baby blue that my 57 100e was (I got that backwards in my story we didn’t get any paperwork and had never seen one before, but our service truck was a frame up restoration of a1948 Ford F 150 Flathead V 8 that I learned to drive on, so the motor wasn’t anything new.) it was a two door Blue Flame 6 with 3 on the tree + overdrive, which was a cabal on the left side of the steering column. During a street race, I pulled the OD Cable so hard by accident that it came completely out of the spring casing. At first I was sick to my stomach and put it in the trunk to keep in case I could repair it, but I discovered by accident that I now had a 5 speed by getting an overdrive gear in second as well as third, which gave it a second breath when the power cure began to fall off resulting in a little more speed before a second redline in two gears. Now it was not a V-8, but every little bit helped when you were 18 in 1966 through 67 when I got my first Volvo, a 1961 122S 4 door which I wish that I still had. It was the beginning of a love affair resulting in 10 Volvos since then. Unfortunately they are all going electric which is stupid since there is no alternative power source that reduces the carbon footprint, in fact it is worse than conventional gasoline powered cars getting 30+ mph tod. And the production of the LI Batteries is causing child slavery on the front end and as of today, there is no plan for the environmentally safe disposal of them at the very short end of their life cycle.

    Absolutely stunning looking car! So dinky and cute looking, i`d have this in a heartbeat (although defo fitted with bucket seats and seatbelts or harnesses) it is such an ice cool motor. I do like the idea of it running a modern 4 pot turbo, maybe if the current engine died i`d replace it with an all alloy Honda vtec lump with a supercharger to give that torquey bigger engine feeling and pull. As is though it is still an incredible motor, so very well finished.

      Britain has sooo many accents. Ours in North East England. And accents change right the way up and down the country. Quite cool really !

    He needs to take the car into a reputable tuner, and get the maximum amount of horsepower and torque out of that cute little engine!

    I get having no seatbelts and those TERRIBLE front seats keep things looking standard but i`d HAVE to fit buckets and belts! Otherwise booting it, heavy braking or taking a corner at literally anything over walking pace your gonna be sliding all over the place! Those Old School seats have ZERO support, let alone the safety aspect side of things (especially considering how unsafe these old motors are compared to new stuff, have a crash and it will just disintegrate!)

    • @spottedmotors
      @spottedmotors  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes we would have to agree. It felt very strange driving a Turbocharged car with no belts. We would swap the seats out and fit some belts !

      @@spottedmotors maybe more of a straight through setup. It looks like it had a pretty restrictive muffler. Maybe straight pipe with a resonator? It’s hard to hear the sound over my phone though

      Cool car. It will be much better sound in a turbo car, if you have a silencer (or none) far forward on the exhaust system. Cars without a turbo get the opposite, a silencer at the back and better sound. 😎👍

    The BRITISH mis-understand the terminology of Patina, this scrap is corroded, it’s corrosion that’s perforated the metal paneling so I can’t understand how it passed it’s safety inspection.

      @@spottedmotors I looked at the V8 swap and it's just too much work to justify the gains. The Hayabusa can be mounted in the trunk and do a transfer case set up. These cars only need 200 HP to make them a fast, nimble Street goer.
