Exactly. Half these idiots don't know the difference. People in LA caught 300+ lb bluefin and 200+ lb yellowfin tuna right between Catalina and San Clemente this whole month. Sport fishing boats are coming back with 220 and more yellowfin from LA. These "environmentalnuts" has never even been in a fishing vessel and don't know difference between a bonito and mackeral.
@Kevin Montrond How would people judge a fish species population? Most people assume there are department of fish and game and even NOAA that tracks the fish population. The truth is the Department of Wildlife depends on FISHERMAN to provide the information. How do I know? They check and count our catches occasionally when we get back into the landing. Most of these counts are well under the actual numbers. How do I know? We catch and release tons of fish. We can't possibly explain that we returned at least a hundred fish on every trip back into the ocean. In the case of Tuna, there are limits. When we hit limits, we stop fishing by law. We would never know how much fish is out there. The truth is most of these people spouting on fish populations have never been in the ocean to fish for them. They would have no understanding of what is out there. I go fishing almost every weekend and have a decent idea of fish populations for the targeted species. In fact, I know a friend who has buddies who are commercial fisherman. They are not allowed to catch certain species like White Sea Bass. They catch squid on a commercial basis and WSB ends up being a huge bycatch that they have to throw away dead into the water. The DFG will never see those true numbers and can only guess. Case in point, the rockfish species called Cowcods were expected to take 90 years to recover. The species has fully recovered in 2019 in less than 20 years, which is over 70 years ahead of schedule.

They have absolutely no argument because their information is coming from biased sources with a political agenda of blaming environmental changes on wildlife. They have these preconceived notions and ideas based on global warming and how it negatively affects the world, while blindly ignoring obvious facts that their theories are flawed. They are claiming bluefin tunas are going extinct! Give me a break. These species was targeted by greedy poaches in the past, but the stock is healthy and thriving. When you have 300+ lb tunas within 2 hour boat ride from a major metropolitan city like Los Angeles, its not extinct and its not going to be extinct in the short while.

Enlighten yourself and learn something new from Dr Patrick Moore, one of the founders of Greenpeace. He explains how the movement was hijacked by people with a political agenda and corrupted the science with falsified data over the years. He is an amazing person and very knowledgeable about subject of global warming and the "threat" of the greenhouse gases.

Thought Sasha was annoying at first, but he grew on me. He clearly has at least a cursory understanding of Japanese language and culture, and seems as passionate as anyone when it comes to sushi, while still maintaining a balanced view.

Patricia Rock I don't think that you understand ecosystems and the necessity of diversity of species and animals in ecospheres. Within any trophic level of an environment, biomass is to be maintained in a carrying capacity to ensure that the system remains healthy because all inner-system species are heavily dependent on each other. Any level of ecosystem organization requires a balance of each type of producer, consumer and decomposers. To remove and endanger the presence of bluefin tuna in various ecosystems across the world could have an incredibly large impact. It's not wrong to eat them, but they should be protected. They need to be a surviving species that is a maintainable food source and consumers of the ocean so that companies can continue to sell them and aquatic life is not disrupted.

Patricia Rock Yeah, because blue fin tuna will cure hunger... Man, instituting harvesting quotas allows us to eat this fish for eternity (in theory) while eating as much as we want will let the fish die out in a few decades, which option will feed more people? Think about it!
Munchies The Bluefin is now a farmed fish in Japan, it's not going anywhere. If it's such a desirable commodity, and I think it is, others will continue to get involved in the preservation of this wonderful resource. Some people don't like 'farmed' fish but, aquaculture (mariculture) is the way of the future, might as well get used to it.
Here where I live. There are no strict regulations of catching fish, whether small or big. Rarely I eat whatever tuna breed. Most of my family consumption are the sardines which are very abundant, farm milk fish or tilapia. Just few years ago, fillet creme dory fish flooded our market which is very cheap. But when I made some digging. This dory are packed with toxic chemicals .

With warmer seas because of global warming, here in Hawaii the fishery extended the fishing season because warmer waters help the tuna during spawning and the results are more tuna. I believe besides the yellowfin here in Hawaii, the bluefin should and can be more productive because of global warming.

Morehead City, NC still hosts a HUGE bluefin tuna tournament every year. I can't believe they still KILL those beautiful fish, string them up for show, then THROW THEM IN THE GD DUMPSTER! This crap needs to stop NOW!
That is true to any fish. I used to fish along the shore of California. Years ago I got a lot of fish and now I rarely get anything except a few sardines and mackerels. There used to be a lot of fishing barges along the cost where you pay to go fishing. They are all out of business. The piracy issue in Somalia started with the protest of large international fishing ships depleting fish along the coast leaving misery to the local population. After a few years of no more large fishing ships, fish came back to Somalia!
The problem will only get worse until all the fish in the sea are extinct and jellyfish will be the only thing left to consume.

We are already seeing serious declines, but you'll be hard pressed to find sellers admit it. Why else is China fighting smaller nations over water rights?
They probably have to travel further and further to find fish that are in decline. We did it to whales centuries ago for oil. Thank goodness we discovered oil and finally electricity.
Unfortunately, civilizations push problems down the future for someone else to deal with.
We don't need to worry so much about nuclear wars, because we are destroying eco systems at a rate that will eventually catapult us all into starvation (then civil and a 3rd world war). I am sure I'll be dead before then.
Why don't the tuna men all contribute to raising baby tuna till they are large enough to survive in the open ocean? Growing baby fish costs less than growing big fish and if you can increase survival..there will be plenty in the future. Say 10% of eggs survive to adulthood. What if you could up it to 90%? Grow them till they are not prey size and release

This could easily be fixed if we would only catch fully grown tuna that have had a chance to reproduce, that way it would even out.

Full grown tuna are already rare. They're fished before they can mature.
I feel like I watched a doc about 10 years ago about this issue, and I remember the Japanese officials being damn near hostile to the reporter.
As we are months away from 2020, will you be following up this video with what has happened in the last 5 years? Including any recently published studies, feedback from Chefs, and the Japan government? It would be nice to see what happens and changes with every decade if you can find the same people to interview and see how the decline or resurgence has affected them and the world.

7 years later, and bluefin tuna is now back to 1880s levels, still some more work to do to get it back to pre-1970s levels but we're making progress.
this whole documentary made me very hungry.
Here is my problem - we [as human race] are still acting, as we would be a rather small population, which don't have any impact in nature. And the legislations and laws are pretty much exactly like that.
However this could be not further from the truth.
I believe, that fisheries, but also agriculture [and every industry which has an environmental impact] HAVE TO counterbalance their interference with the nature. A fishery should nurse as many small fishes [or other seafood] and release them as they catch. Obviously this could be made also by non-profit organisations, which could be paid by the fisheries.
It seems just wrong for me, that the ocean is looked at as free for all resource, the same as the rainforest, and pretty much all other natural resources!
That attitude is in conflict with capitalism. Capitalism means as much profit short term as possible without caring about the consequences.

By the time of this reply, bigeye tuna has also been listed as a threatened species by IUCN - basically it's the next in line. As top predators, tunas will never be able to meet our insatiable appetite - most of the can ones are skipjacks which are technically not true tuna.

Another problem is most people only know a very small portion of what sushi is. It's not just rice and fish. Not just rolls. There are so many different recipes. But most places don't offer a more varied menu

I been hearing about blue fin tuna extensions for 40 years.
Its not true that the Japanese started to eat tuna from the admiration of the western culture... It was because preserving fresh large pieces of tuna were impossible at that time since there was no electronic fridges and technology. Tuna, especially the fatter part gets dark and gets bad easily allowing the Japanese not to prefer eating it until they got the technology to keep it fresh.

Conservation will never be enough as long as the consumer end is unwilling to cycle through the different varieties of fish avaliable. Warbird Phoenix you are absolutely right. in the 1960s, purse seiners catching fish for the canned tuna market in United States coastal waters removed huge numbers of juvenile and young Western Atlantic bluefin, taking out several entire year classes. Mediterranean fisheries have historically been poorly regulated and catches under-reported, with French, Spanish, and Italian fishermen competing with North African nations for a diminishing population.
