@JoTalksYT The Astros paid a high price. Mets send $35m or 52.5m of his salaries, which are portions of either $57.8m or 92.8m, meaning Houston is paying either $22.8m for 1.33 years ($17.14m per year), or $40.3m ($17.30m per year) for 2.33 years.
For that right, though, the Astros paid approximately $36m in prospect value (a 50 FV and a 45 FV), so b/t money and prospects the Astros are paying either $57.8m for 1.33 years ($43.5m AAV), or $76.3m (32.7m AAV) for 2.33 years. That's extremely expensive for an old pitcher who struggled this year and was hurt. The Astros are surely hoping Verlander pitches 140 innings in 2024, btw, given those comparative AAVs.

I don't know why people keep saying "he's Justin Verlander" like that means anything. Max Scherzer looks like ass the season and he's Max Scherzer so what. I've seen some great games as a Mets fan from Justin Verlander but I don't think that he is anywhere close to what he was last year or what he was 5 years ago. He's on the decline you get to Future starters potentially who could be fantastic. And I know people get hung up on the money but it's not my money so who gives a shit it's some billionaires. I've been a mets fan for 24 years, we've been rebuilding and for all 24 of those years pretty much but these trades I actually feel decent about

The owner is worth $18 Billion and doesn’t care about money If the season is not going anywhere, at least trade away the pieces you have to trade and get good prospects for them and if you don’t care about money, then do it that way. We kept Maldonado for this exact scenario, and without Maldonado, JV doesn't waive NTC. We got a CY level ace. We got a good RHP reliever. Beilak gone. Good. He isn't ready. The Mets got a future 30 homer 100 rbi OF under a decade of control. We already have a few of those talents on the MLB club.

I think it’s a win win. No issue with Verlander other than his age and contract. I like the prospects we got back. I preferred the Dodgers since they had a better farm I’d say but can’t complain grabbing 2 top 4 prospects. Cash means nothing to Cohen so that isn’t the issue. Mets are loaded with position players but lack arms in the farm besides Tidwell. They have pitching but Tidwell is the only real high quality potential arm I’d say

Prospects are hard to evaluate. Back when the Astros got JV the first time from Detroit, they gave up 2 or 3 of their top prospects and people thought it was an even trade. Fast forward a few years later and those guys aren't doing anything with Detroit and JV won a couple of titles and a couple of Cy Youngs. Plus the Mets are covering $54 million of JV's contract, I don't see how this isn't a win for the Astros. Now, if Gilbert and Clifford do well and become stars, then it's great. Better the devil you know then the devil you don't, I'll take the proven JV with a lot of money off the Astros books over prospects.

$86.7 million contract that included a $35 million vesting option for 2025. They got money off loaded too wasn't like they paid it all. If he reaches the Inns next year Astros have to cover the vested year in 2025.

You’re speaking as though they’re working with a budget. They aren’t. They get great prospects back, which they desperately need, and sign a few checks that literally don’t matter to Cohen. There was zero reason to keep Max and JV. They weren’t winning a World Series with the remainder of their pitching staff. They can now throw money at Ohtani or many other of the upcoming free agents and those pitchers know they will be 1..2 or 3 in the rotation

As a Mets fan, I love this for them. Astros can win this year and next so this makes sense for them…if he stays healthy. Makes sense for both teams. Clifford being included in this deal, though, is a bit surprising and makes it understandable that many Astros fans are upset with this trade, but as a Mets fan I’d say win while you can bc I thought the Mets were going to be a dynasty after ‘86 and, well, we’re still waiting. Also as a Mets fan, I feel this is Cohen’s best move in bis short tenure. He has the unique ability to use money in a multitude of ways, and to repurpose his investments. The Mets got Clifford in this, (and Acuna from Texas,) bc Cohen essentially bought them by eating huge chunks of remaining money on those deals. The Astros effectively traded Gilbert for Verlander and sold Clifford to the Mets for $20 million or so.
