Actually, if you see interviews about the first World of Goo game, its story is actually not "big corporation bad" per se, but actually specifically about the struggles of indie game developers in a world dominated and driven by the game industry. It's why Chapter 3 is about Product Z (references the 3D craze that was already rampant in 2008) and why Chapter 4 is literally the internet (it's what gives indies a place to grow independent from the gaming industry; 2D Boy's only outlet was their internet forum). Kyle Gabler himself described gooballs being sucked by a global pipe distribution system akin to aspiring game devs being picked up by the gaming industry (reminder that he used to be an EA employee) This is what I really like about Tomorrow Corp's/2D Boy's games. You think the message is a generic criticism of something in society, and while they do make their jabs at various stuff, the real message actually ends up being something way more personal. Little Inferno does the same thing, which uses the themes of climate change and free to play/pay to win games to talk about loneliness, "escaping the endless loop" and making the most out of your time instead of burning it away. And World of Goo 2, of course, also follows, talking about how making a sequel that lives up to the original is impossible, and it's better to leave the rest to the modding community (WoG has an active modding community, even to this day, which is why probably they mostly refer to them rather than other indie game devs in general) rather than attempt to reach unreachable heights only to end up rehashing the same material again and again.
As the biggest World of Goo glazer in existence, this is genuinely my game of the year and one of my new favorite games ever, I loved nearly every second of it and it's absolutely a worthy successor to the godly original
Since people are posting their ideas about different stuff in the story, here's my interpretation of Angler: Angler is about sudden success, and how stressful it can be. The level itself is supposed to be a party celebrating your success, but the fireworks are constantly thrashing your fishing line around, it's dark and your vision can't adjust because of the flashing lights, and it's all very noisy with foreboding music and loud background chatter. It's a stressful level to play. It must've been how the 2D Boy guys felt when World of Goo 1 was a chart-topping success. Glad that their gamble paid off, but also unsure how to handle the sudden fame now that the media has eyes on them and they'll now be expected to deliver in the future. It's a great fire-breathing monster that was bigger than any of them could have expected. Going off another commenter saying the ending is about inspiration, since the massive column of fire breath is what initially caught the eye of Rocket Man, even though it was scary and stressful in the moment, it would eventually lead to other games and pieces of art that were inspired by it.
This is probably one of my favorite games of all time. I'm kinda glad we waited this long because now that everyone's older, this feels so much more impactful now.
I was wondering why I didn't hear about World of Goo 2 being released, until I realized that it's an Epic exclusive, and all of a sudden it makes sense why I never heard about it.
Don't worry, you can still buy a standalone version of the game from the developers' website. And, I heard that the Epic-exclusivity contract will expire in about a year, so maybe we'll see a Steam release soon.
I think the story is actually about how they couldn't make a world of goo 2, it all feels disconnected because it's meant to be, it's all just cool ideas thrown around with no reason, the soundtrack is recycled and many of the things we see are similar to world of goo 1 because it wants us to feel like we've already seen all of this before. When you get to chapter 4 you see the eventual result of doing this repeating process forever, the idea of a world of goo 17 is funny but scary at the same time because it's just the same stuff repeated over and over with a different mask. At one point the sign painter says that the game's story changed, this wasn't the original chapter 4, the story derailed and, in chapter 5, it starts to focus on the telescope guy. He says how he's been observing this world and taking pictures, but when he arrived on the planet everything was different, the things he saw in his childhood on the telescope were faded and different now. I think this is a metaphor for us, for everyone who played the original and wanted to feel the same, but felt empty when we played world of goo 2. In the ending, the telescope guy starts taking pieces of the planet, and then goes on to disperse them throughout other planets, creating life. I think this is what the devs wanted us to take away from the game, it's impossible to recapture the magic of things in our childhood, we changed, and so has our perception of them, we cannot make the same thing over and over again, but we CAN take inspiration from this stuff, take the good things, the feelings, the ideas, and make our own art out of it, not repeating old stuff but in the process of inspiration creating something new. It's ultimately a story about letting go, leaving old things behind and focusing on creating new concepts, but with the inspiration of everything that came before us. Using the nostalgia to further fulfill ourselves rather than getting stuck in the past. I honestly find it's a beautiful message in this modern age full of remakes and sequels.
But it wasn't Sign Painter, because it was stated in Ode to the Conduit Connector. Sign Painter, in fact, leaves a sign once in Paper Goolf, but as character in game sequel, not real person. The real person is Curator, who coded himself in WoG 17
3:41 While the whistle was removed, I think it still lives on as the Goo Balls now go towards the place where the last Goo Ball was placed on the structure, and it’s much less infuriating than in WOG 1 when you didn’t have the whistle and the Goo Balls would just roam wherever they wanted.
World of Goo was one of the first games I really ever played. I was like 7 when it came out, and I've played it more times than I can count, but crucially it's been a few years since I've revisited it. Strangely, I didn't notice the graphics upgrade -- it looks how I remember the original looking (besides chapter 4), through my childhood memories. Chapters 1-3 were a blast, chapter 4 knocked my socks off (the sparklers were SO. FUNNY.) but the ending felt... anticlimactic. Maybe I was just having so much fun I didn't want it to be over, but I could've done with about one more world's worth after chapter 4. Still, holy shit, what a comeback that no one expected!
I love how chapter 4 (especially black stain) represents how as games are constantly pressed for sequels, they end up losing vision of what they originally were. Black stain purposely limits any similarities to the original game, to represent how many games run themselves into the ground with each installment having a new gimmick that doesn’t actually have anything to do with the franchise. 2dboy and tomorrow corp have always been good at hiding commentary in their games, and this is definitely commentary based on their experiences as indie devs
Okay i could be completely mistaken, but on my first playthrough i felt the story wasn't that bad! From my interpretation the WOG organisation rebuilt itself once the goo started bubbling up again, pretending to be green as the goo is now theoretically renewable. Then they found the squid monster (maybe multiple) that are responsible for spitting out the goo (ik theres a level where it does exactly that) and captured it for profit despite seeming green. They started to extract as much as humanly possible, the only way to produce more is to speed up time (this is hinted at by signs). This then leads to the jump into the future and allows the commentary on sequels and revisiting your childhood that someone else mentioned in the comments! Sorry if this was a bit hard to read, im on mobile haha
as someone who has all but basically MADE this game their personality, this was a pretty good video! I think it captured the game very well, It's so cool to see people talk about Tomorrow Corporation in this day and age, I thought I was the only one... amazing video!
i felt the game was trying too say something about the impermanence of legacy. In time all will return to dust as the entire world of goo corporation and their legacy disappearing in an accident deleting the history of the games. But life will (hopefully) go on as the ending implies
Genuinely thank you so much for making this video im in a state of absolute Goo brainrot but not enough people fuck with this series like i do i swear to god
the devs excluding the sandbox tower mode was actually just a leftover from the initial release of WoG, when you could connect the game online and see how high your _own_ tower stacked up compared to other players but i don't think they'd want to pay for the servers long after WoG2 had released, so i can understand them not including it
This video and the one before it were so good. The humor, the visuals, the pacing, all of it. I'm honestly not sure how you don't have more subs. Good shit man 🤟 Also if you like sonic I'd love to see a video about superstars because that game was hot garbage.
Man I wish I had World of Goo 2. Normally I am perfectly OK with pirating games unless they rely on online features _(seriously, I pirated Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 because I couldn't be assed to search through my basement for the CD I used back in the day),_ but World of Goo holds such a special place in my heart that I couldn't bring myself to deny the developers some money. Unfortunately, I'm not exactly in the best financial position, so I'm kinda stuck wanting to play the game, but not being able to. And no, watching a let's play will NOT cut it this time.
Also, I honestly liked the story! It's more allegorical this time around, with a lot of its themes being about the nature of things decaying over time (and how that relates to making a sequel to a beloved indie game, for instance). The way the game ends, basically telling fans that even though World Of Goo is over, that they should go out there and make their own "worlds of goo" is really heartwarming too. It's a real love letter to the fans, as the entire game is.
Played it on Switch the whole way through (It had lag at most parts let me tell you). Some levels to be honest, I didn’t know what to do. Even then I still loved it. Definitely Game Of The Year! Get it on PC though, it’s easier to control and probably won’t lag if it’s decent.
A few things were disappointing, but this game existing is a miracle and is still very solid I got past Super Tower of Goo on the first try, I think I played the original a little too much....
i think that the story is about how futile it is to try and recapture the essence of the original in a sequel and i'm pretty sure that the guy on the rocket making the new worlds of goo is about how they're passing the torch of the game to the community with the fan levels
Does Iconoclasts get good at some point? I played like 30% of the game and just got bored. Very hard metroidvania to get into for me and I love the genre and played like everything well known and more.
According to Noel, one of the devs: “I took extra pains with the ball behavior so they go where they're needed. And we're overloading touch already for grabbing and panning, so that was too much.”
Disagree 1 .Levels in world of goo 2 mostly look under-thought boring and uninspired, 2. the somewhat sad, dark and grim atmosphere of the first game was replaced with no atmosphere at all, 3. the new outline-less art style is corporate and souless, the plot of WoG2 makes WoG1 meaningless, 4. there is no new soundtrack, all of WoG2 ost is fan covers of WoG1 ost, and covers are uselessly complex, every song is a boring orchestra without a kick. 5. Cutscenes suck, they are ugly, and plotless, and just lazy 6. Final Levels suck, final levels of wog1 were a cool&easy&pretty and exstreamly unique, final levels in wog2 are just like... there i guess. 7. Plot sucks, plot sucks, everything that was in wog1 just happens again, it sucks 8. Chapter 4 is cool i guess, but they are realy just putting everything that come's in their mind into this game, even wog modders dont usually do that, wog mods are more wog that wog2 It feels like WoG2 is corporate souless slop siquel (like pvz2), that's how usually big corporations make sequels to the games from studios that they bought, it's really feels like WoG2 was made by fcn EA or somthing. Boring, Souless, Uninspired, Under-thought, Corporate and Souless. Gameplay is fine i guess, but many of the levels just too similar and boring to me, wog1 was more various
1. How so? 2. I disagree. WoG17’s city was far more darker vibe than anything in wog1. 3. How in the world does it make wog1 meaningless 4. That’s because wog1 barely had any new music either as it was taken from other projects, and because having all music be remixes fit with the theme of revisiting the past only to find you can’t really recreate it. 5. How? The cutscenes have a TON of plot and sometimes even more than wog1 did. 6. The final levels of wog1 were NOT easy compared to the rest of the levels, and why do you think the final wog2 levels suck 7. The plot is NOT “everything in wog1 happens again”. I have no idea where you got that from. 8. Not really. There was a lot of stuff they had to scrap from chapter 4 because it didn’t work out as they intended. And i see your point, but wog2 wasn’t intended to be like WoG as much as possible, it’s better to go in more original directions.
