    Thankyou Len for your generous free tuition. I started painting several years ago, after not painting since secondary school. I've wasted so much money ( that I could not afford) on art lessons and still felt frustrated after them, feeling dissatisfied that I didn't learn anything. I thought it was me being a poor student. I now realise it was more the teaching methods than my inability. I'm now painting more confidently, due to your thorough teaching method. It is so thorough, you explain and show everything in detail, in simple understandable terms. You are so generous, unpretentious (compliment), and down to earth, and to think I almost didn't watch your first video I came across as all I saw for several moments was a blue screen. I'm so glad I sat and watched that blue screen as what I saw was magic to my eyes and ears. I'm now a "Len Hend groupy". A BIG THANKYOU again.

    This is a complete look at all aspects of painting. I have learned so much today from your lessons and plan to go back to this video often to take notes on the sections I need help with. You take your time demonstrating techniques making it most enjoyable. This video is a gold mine of information ! Thanks for producing it for the public. Thank Ian Harris for telling me about you. I am sharing this video so my painting friends can discover you also. All the best to you !

    Thank you Len. You have taught me so much. If I had been shown this in the two years I took art in high school, I would not have waited forty years to buy art supplies. I have always thought that I would love to paint and that I might be OK at it. Thanks to you I now believe that I can paint something worth looking at. Thank you...

    The only video tutorial required for beginners. Easy to follow. Excellent tips on brush strokes, how to load paint on brushes, perspectives, tones and what not. Fortunately I found Mr. Len and this video during the time I was depressed about my painting skills. Thank God and Thank you Mr. Len. You saved me.

    This has got to be the best Introduction to Painting Video I have ever seen. Nothing is left to chance and everything Explained to a tee. I started Painting a little over a year ago and was so frustrated with Videos that would stop and or leave out the most Important parts. Then I found Lens Videos and before I knew it I was Painting ! I got lens Lessons through Download. Easy and very inexpensive. This is the place to start if you ask me . Give it a go.

    Thanks for this! I started painting a few years ago and just recently started painting custom work at dirt cheap prices for practice. My clients love my work, but the tone and perspective portions helped me to better understand what always seemed a little "off" to me in my pieces. I look forward to improving my skills with this new understanding! Maybe some day I'll even sell my work at market prices! Haha Thanks, again for these free veteran tips!

    Thank you for your time in explaining how to paint and prepare for a painting.. l will be using this quite allot.. very easy to follow and to understand. l have learned to follow the rules of landscape perspective the brushes to use and the colours but most importantly the whole concept of the horizon lines and face our work towards the centre of your paintings and using the points to measure the correct dimensions to have the straight line through from point A to B.. and using dark to light and Iight to dark.. allot of practicing blending techniques and using the brushes to work the paint. Will be seeing you often.👍😊👩🏻‍🎨

    • @lenhend
      @lenhend  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is not good - you should use it soon or it will go hard. Tubes don't last forever and some colors and brands break up quicker than others.
      I would put the tube in a small plastic bag - maybe 2 or 3 inside each other .

    the natural bristle house painting brush are hard to get ... what brand do you use and where do you get them?

    • @lenhend
      @lenhend  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John - sorry, can't help you much - I'm in Thailand and have some cheap bristle brushes here but I don't read Thai and the brand is not important - nylon brushes seem to be taking over - I like the nylon brushes for water and sky etc. but I will need to adjust my foliage painting techniques as the nylon are too neat

    I found the advises you gave on composition to be informing, but isn't it also very important to break those same rules? surely, if everyone always follow the same rules of composition all pictures end up looking more or less the same? I grant your point about the old masters knew very well where to put light, shadows, object etc. but to me, the old masters are really quite dull and I cannot really tell them apart from each other.
    by breaking the rules one could tell something else than just showing a pretty landscape. sure, you probably won't sell it to the masses and you'll die a poor artist, but... when Degas put a great big staircase in front of his dancers, or half cuts them out of the frame, and put them in awkward places, he makes it seem like a moment, like a snap-shot of life itself. when Monet puts a great big church in the top left of the frame and the horizon awkwardly in the middle, it might be unpleasant for the eye to watch but his point is not about the landscape. when Munch scatter people around the room in chairs or standing without any seeming thought on composition and without any light source or shadows, he paints how he remembers it and not how it aught to have been. it become real in a heart-breaking way which he could never have done if he had followed the rules.
    Caspar David Friedrich put things in the middle pointing upwards to show God's greatness through/in nature - as if you were in church looking up at the altar. but then you have Ohara Koson who showed emptiness through a lack of focus on the particular object he was painting in contrast to Friedrich. in contrast to Friedrich's worship of something final or absolute found in nature, Koson didn't worship anything but instead meditated and what he found in nature was gentle and subtle and no-where, and natural. not something put in specific places in the composition to elevate them. both breaks to some extent the rules to show something spiritual. in some of Hammershoi's paintings he will have the model on the end of the painting looking out, it creates a sort of emptiness in the painting as the eyes is drawn out but yet the emptiness of the room remains. it becomes almost mysterious.
    I don't know, maybe I'm not explaining myself very well, and maybe I'm not finding the best examples. all of these surely understand the rules of composition very well and only occasionally breaks them on purpose to tell something specific. but that's exactly it, I'm worried if everyone follows the same rules in landscape paintings we'll just end up with decorative art telling nothing except showing a pretty landscape.
    so in short I agree with everything you say about composition and I see you have a greater understand than me on the subject, but shouldn't you _also_ tell how important it is to break those same rules whenever you feel it's right? knowing the rules is important, but you put it like you cannot break the rules.
    what would Friedrich be without God? Koson be without emptiness? Hammarshoi be without something lacking? Munch be without the quality of a memory? Monet and Degas without the moment? they all achieved it by breaking the rules, in my eyes. I cannot think of a single great classical painter who achieves the same, not Rembrandt, not da Vinci, not Vermeer. to me those are just decorations in comparison. more skilled in many ways but they often all just look the same as the other painters of that time. but maybe that's just my opinion.
