- We mounted a QS273 hub motor onto the front of a home made dirt bike to build the world's first AWD gas/electric hybrid dirt bike. Why did we build a 2wd motorcycle? For drag strip launches! We assumed that the extra drive wheel on the front of the dirt bike will add hole shot performance. Were we correct? Find out in today's episode!

The front wheel motor is NOT the issue, you guys need a different tire(Shinko 241/244) for traction. Go into the app or BMS settings and turn down the power output to about 35% while leaving the speed at 90% and it'll feel less squirrelly when you launch.
And put the regen brake on its lowest setting or off!
But please change your front tire, it'll make a world of difference
Make sure you insulate between the battery pack and the gas engine... AND DON'T CHARGE THE BATTERY PACK FOR AT LEAST ONE HOUR AFTER RIDING THE BIKE.!.!.!. Or it may catch fire 🔥🔥🔥 enjoy
This guy e-bikes
The front wheel motor is absolutely the problem. That much unsprung weight is terrible on a bike.
Not familiar with this kit or it's software but modern RC ECU's usually have a ramp up you manually sett a curve for so on launch you can progressively increase power based on speed over time no matter the throttle input, 1/2 throttle full throttle same ramp to that throttle position every time. Take your time, fine tune this and it'll be a monster.
They already made it clear in the video they were going to change the front tyre.
@@SportbikerNZ it’s not going to help them. That bike is destined to hurt someone.
Heat shield between the battery and motor. Thumb throttle needs to be on the left side of the handlebars. Front motor throttle needs to be supplemental and precise. You don't want that front motor powering into a corner.
arent you an expert
They probably aren’t going to ride this thing on a moto track
Would they want the left throttle on the right side of the left handle and the right throttle on the left side of the right handle so that their thumbs can push it?
he is probably right, you would want to use it like or with the clutch on a track
@@sethcrawford6219 who cares about a track? Just riding it around their yard course could have same implications, let alone generally riding it.
Stuff like this is why I love this channel. Naysayers be darned lol keep on keepin on!
Put a peddle assist sensor on the wheel. It is meant to go on the crank but if you put it on the wheel the electric motor will kick in when you give it some gas🤙🏻
I was wondering about that! Nice idea
@@braydenhancock3907 thanks Brayden...
Lol no because you couldn’t stop.
@@ianj8505 let off the gas, pull the clutch and hit the brake. When you let off of the gas the hub motor will decelerate
Absolutely this, having the option to have it change it's assist while you give it regular throttle will be huge for ride-ability and traction. A better tire will help, but it looks like it's going to be about consistent throttle input matching with that rear. This is amazing, btw I love it! You'll still have the ability to override with a throttle input through the handle throttle but for regular riding they should now be able to match and feel better during straights and corners. Then when you can go all out on the straights you can override it!
Crazy build chaps, you need to plug the black first on the battery, and red wire last. The red has an antispark ring in it which should reduce the snapping like Ike got when he first plugged it in!
Another great video guys 👍👍
You should really fit a heat shield between the battery and the motor. Lithium batteries become very unstable when they get hot.💣💥🔥
I love this, favourite channel to watch.
Accidentally prototyped the next evolution in drag bikes 😊
Charles is looking more and more like 'He-Man!' Another great video guys
Need a Awd Crosskart. Very cool build
They’ve actually done that before they made a cart that had a motor on each tire
I was thinking the same thing alot more controllable. With four wheels instead of 2. Would be a neat add on to the dragster they built.
@@anthonynesbitt3997I was watching their playlist but I never found the rest! Do you know the title for it?
@Dantheman5127 it's called 4 engine go kart
@@anthonynesbitt3997 not the same or your not understanding what I'm saying
Wild idea....i like it! Just needs a knobby dirt bike tire on the front
dont let ike hating it stop you from building this thing up. MAYBE a throttle that kicks on at a lower speed than the back tire to mitigate the lack of control? or maybe a tire that grips more?
PLEASE continue this build
Just pure greatness! I wanna see more of this bad boy. Maybe you guys should make some all electric mini-bikes and race em.
I saw a video about a dual hub motor bike from taiwan (i think), they used a dynamic throttle control for the front motor that adjusted the top wheel speed if it wasn't getting traction. Software stuff, also Electric bike batteries are usually in a mostly sealed box. not strapped down like an automotive battery.
Really cool idea. I think a more aggressive front tire will make it handle much better and totally transform how it pulls
“Shoulder snapper”🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥‼️‼️‼️💯💯💯💀
You can get "half-grip" twist throttles for ebikes, and i think some can be left hand mounted. I would put one of those on the left bar and put a traditional twist throttle on the right for the gas.
I've built a trike a while Back iv still got it . its a Shwinn beach cruiser conversion with fat tires and a 420 cc preditor to power the back wheels . it also has a diff locker on the conversion and the front wheel 1500w has the electric hub motor so if it ran out of gas the front would still get you home. It was hard to get use to it going form either system because there so different ones push the other pull. that and the spring forks don't help I was also able to still pedal but it is alot more difficult so it really never pedaled I used all low rider parts to make the lighting system in back turn signals brake and a hid bullet head light . It was definitely not cheap to build. But its a awesome trike good for mine mart run or beer
great stuff guys thanks
really cool project! the inability to turn might be the gyroscopic effect from that big wheel and hub motor spinning. Thats probably what john was feeling when he said it kept him upright. This would be a great woods weapon. and you can ride quietly when passin 'that one house"
I'd try integrating that thumb throttle into the collar and offset it so it engages the rear tire faster. Nice job guys.
Yes ! A Hose clamp set-up with a peg hitting the Thumb throttle when it's moving and need the front for hills and power pulls .
Oh man you guys inspire me
Keyless entry. Nice
Cant wait until you guys dial that thing in!
A great video y'all l, love the content... A great idea would be to use the front wheel for lower HP then upgrade the motor so you have higher end proformance and horsepower too... Idk how great it would work but give it a try if ya want
What an awesome project gyes great show ✌️
Omg! A fat tire conversion would be awesome on this thing!
Yup. Knobby front tire. Make some custom fairings, a paint job, and that would be fun for bush trails and hill climbs. Set the electric's power down, though.. it'll spin instead of pull.
That setup would be awesome for hill climbing. 🤘
Im glad we get to see charles in this video.
Like Dr Frankenstein. You have created a monster. Good job. 👍
Yeah definatly need another knobby up front for more control and traction. Cool build guys
I love it. Here's an idea, swap the throttle mechanisms if possible, use thumb throttle for the electric.
My plans for such was a 'Hose-Clamp' with a bolt to hit the thumb throttle for the electric while using the gas. That way you could leave the gas off and use the electric without hinderance, and without the battery on, vice-versa.
Love it should put the clutch lever as the throttle though 😂😂😂
So Charles decided on getting a 'Thundar the barbarian' hair cut???
I needed a rental car for training, and I decided on saving gas and got a Tesla. I am used to bigger gas engines. I wanted to see what it had for speed from a stop. I was impressed at the no bogging and straight speed to the wheels.
That thing needs a front tire with some knobbies. It’ll get traction and then hold on for dear life Isaac
Those motors are known to push 50hp max! Would be sick to come close to that on this build!
that coupled with a 2 to 1 throttle that kicks the electric motor in after the gas would be awesome
They'll do that
yep, they need to GET A GRIP! haha
Best hybrid bike!
Charles, that hair is starting to look like Ishmael in Kingpin.😂Loving the build, guys!
Good vid. With proper practice and application of power at the right times and amount, you will become adept at riding it. Even with the weight of the motor in the front wheel, it'll be lighter than some of the older motorcycle front wheels. Back when they used huge alloy castings, heavy twin rotors setups - that was a lot of front wheel weight before modern times lightening everything. This isn't going to be drastically different.
Keep it up 👍👍
Hell yeah I've been waiting for this video
That thing is fast!
😆 🤣 "The shoulder snapper 9000!"
2 things - 1: put a rear tire on the front, and 2... get an electronic thumb throttle and a cable throttle (twist) for the gas engine. You don't want to have to re-train yourself to ride a dirtbike... so keep it standard... then use the thumb throttle as the "boost" function with the front wheel.
7:06 I love how Jon is doing that while wearing earmuffs around his neck 😂
13:14 Ike: “really strange” *disappears*
Y’all know what y’all should do? Have two paddle throttles on both side one for gas and one for electric whichever one you’ll use more, respectively which side you want it. And for brakes just have normal brakes. One on left for front and one on the right for back or whichever combination suits y’all the best out of that cuz I know for sure y’all are going to *NEED* brakes for that beast of a machine
For twin throttle control, try rigging up a lever from either the front or the rear of the twist grip that pushes (or pulls) the thumb throttle in sync.
You need RWD to turn
Try different pedals assist settings. On my ebike, setting 5 is all the beans (22+ mph)& 1 is only for like 8 mph. I use 1 when I set off & click up to the higher settings as I get going. It could act like gears.
Charles looks like he's a little lad who loves berries and cream 😂
This reminds me of having a 4x4 with a locked front axle in ice. The truck just wants to go straight. Front wheel drive cars have always been a little goofy in slick conditions to me. The powered front wheel just looses traction. A knobby might help slow it down and grip, but I think it's going to be screwy in turns.
as someone who built a hybrid ebike with the same concept i can vouch for the sketch factor. Though my front hub motor was only 1000W. and my engine was a 100cc bicycle engine.
if those metal straps work their way through the battery casing, it'll short out and cause a huge fire. Also need some heat shielding between lipo and engine. Store the battery at storage voltage (around 3.7-3.8v per cell).
Hey,here's an idea..Ditch the gas engine, and rear wheel, install an electric driven wheel out back,a 2nd battery where the engine was and have yourselves an Electrokon dual wheel drive sickle..
Cool project,, I build 2x2 motorcycles. They can be a little funky to steer in corners.
ya'll gotta combine those throttle cables too now!
Great idea for an enduro bike. Optional fwd would be an advantage .
Good job I like it
What a cool bike haha ! Knobby tire and see how it goes in the mud keep it up
Definitely knobby tire in the front. Thumb throttle on the left. And charge the electric motor with the gas. Hybrid style 🤯. I like it a lot.
I have this exact same NB Power kit on an ebike frame that weighs about as much as a pit bike and it's insane. Easily capable of 60+ mph and so quiet you can sneak up on wildlife. A meatier tire would be much better, but with so much torque, it's going to spin anyway. A really cool idea would be to transfer the ebike parts to something like an fl350 Odyssey with the electric throttle mounted to a pedal
I love how John plugged his ears instead of putting on the muffs that were around his neck.
if you got a cruise control thing for the throttle you could have that press the thumb control as you twist the throttle so in a way both are linked
I wonder if Ike is wrong about the stability control. Here's how to test it: give it some power to the front wheel while doing various diameter circles at different speeds. be ready to dump it. See if you can break traction with the front wheel without it low-siding.
As an electronics guy, I always find it funny when petrol guys get freaked out by electricity. 1000's of explosions a minute between your knees your fine with, but some spicy wires scare you. I've never gotten on very well with ICEs. At least, fixing them. This is both an excellent idea and a silly idea. Which is the Venn diagram I'm here for.
to be fair the explosions aren't explosions while they're still in the engine, its less scary when you think about it that way.
Rokon has been building awd bikes for years. They use just one engine to drive both wheels with about the same power and speed. If you could build a throttle setup to power the both the gas and electric to run the same speed.
I once built an AWD mountainbike. It was the greatest I've ever ridden off road. It climbed like crazy, because you could actually put your weight on the front tire. But best for me was the self stabilizing effect. If the front slides off, the power pulls you towards stabilization. May be too harsh with high power though. I guess half the power you have would be enough and handle better.
Also, may be obvious, but it pays to do AWD fully electric. Better weight, less fiddling with controls
Put the thumb throttle on the other side. I’ve built a few sleeper e-bikes with twin motors and I find it’s the best way to control it, even better than both set on the same throttle. They now have a 17” 5000w wheel with a motorcycle sprocket so you can run it on Asian flat Honda engines like your CTs. That will be my next build but I will use two e-bike 36v batteries to make battery mounting easier.
You guys need to incorporate the thumb control and the butterfly on the carb of the gas. It’s most likely just a hall sensor in the thumb control.
Nice boys
Will be a monster with a dirt tire in the front!
C&C leading edge tech !!!!
that need's to go to the beach drag races you go to.
You need a knobby tire on the front. By the way since the electric motor has a sprocket on it put the wheel in the rear and combine it with the gas motor chain.
Most likely this is just the stock tire. They will probably swap it later on also you can’t do a chain since you’re steering
You can’t put the electric hub in the back because it’ll end up turning faster than the engine moves the chain, causing binding. I understand why you’d think this is a good idea but there’s a reason you don’t want two power sources on one wheel
@@TheRealKosmicKing set it to coast mode/pedal assist and it will work. Just a small motor will do
@@braydenhancock3907 but with the setup they’re using on this bike it won’t work like how he’s thinking. If they used a different setup then yeah but not for this
This would be a gamechanger in some heavier adventure bikes when you get stuck in mud , or crawling up some loose terrain, but only to be used then as an aid. Also could give a way to reverse a bike in tought places. And yh, electric motor throttle should be on the left. Please try mudding in the future and crawling up some loose rocks or gravel :D
that end card has me cackling lmao... "We're gonna put it up front"
There was a awd trail bike Ronco and it had chain drive.

Ouuuuu looks awesome
This is an issue I will need to solve for a project at work (combining throttle of an engine with electric motor). My thoughts are that I can use a microcontroller and a speed sensor to set up PID feedback of the output shaft of the engine to send the electric motor controller a 0.5-4.5v signal, so the electric motor is always trying to match the speed of the engine.
You guys are pretty smart, perhaps you could go down this route and see how well it works for you. My application is entirely different but it should work.
Enjoyed 🤗
Crazy build! I gess that part of the stering strangeness is because u guys changed the position off the front wheel. If you place it under the shocks it should turn better.
Great job on this crazy project!
Get the motor out and put anouther battery in and move the front wheel to the back and then see how she goes itching the gas motor was not strong enough.or if you can figure the electronics out go with a gas generator and then operate the wheel next choice I s get rid of the motor add a battery and add a rear power wheel. Lots of ways to experiment.
You guys should definitely build a trike, it would be so wicked!!!
“I didn’t think we’d get this far, I don’t know what to do”
😂😂😂😂
I gotta see this data against doing it with a dirt tire! I’m going to be honest I thought it was going to be dumb too but I’m digging this.
You might be able to get a better top speed by gearing the gas engine a lot taller and utilizing the torque of the electric on take off. I feel like this would work with a dirt tire 😅
Cool uber cool bike
Put a treated tore on there. Also regen is kool cause u can charge the batter while riding with the gas engine
With the way it digs furrows, you can plant some veggies in the soil in no time... :P
Hybrid is cool. you can use front motor to bump start the engine., regen to brake, recharge the battery when cruising etc.
adding a second electric motor in the rear coudl be fun too. maybe also mote controllable because it would balance weight to the rear , and you could control front and rear motors with the same electric throttle so you woulnd have the delay between instant torque in the front and the delay of the gas throttle reving and building power.
When I started to watch this video I thought it was the dumbest thing I had heard of. This thing is awesome!!! I want one!!
if you can get enough weight over the front, that dual drive could be good for drag racing. Use the electric for the hole shot then bleed the engine in. Or somehow link the throttles. Wouldn’t do it on a bike though, maybe a trike could work.
I remember seeing a Rokon when I was a kid, I always thought 2x2 motorcycle was such a cool idea.
That thing is just insane hehe. When can I drive it?😁
westport loving you peoples drive.point and get it done is how our country was made.
Switch it to gas up-front, electric in the back. I went to a classics auction about a decade ago; one of the sales was a three-wheeler delivery motorcycle with the gas engine mounted in front of the forks, chain-driven to the front wheel - which left an appreciable cargo space in the rear despite it being a pretty dinky little trike. Always wondered how it'd pan out, what with the weight on the wheel and all.
I am wondering how to do the electrical setup on a riding mower. Any ideas? Want to be able to keep the transmission but no deck
Mount the e-hub motor with adapted sprocket and disc brake on rear wheel, so you'll have gas and (Hyper-Boost) on one wheel. (Heavy battery should reduce wheelies)
Ive been in the process of building a awd front and rear hub motor drag bobber for awhile now we should race when its done lol
They had an infomercial for an AWD bicycle back in the day and it looked pretty cool, but that was just pedal power.
Can't you try and fit an alternator to the engine? To put some charge in the electric motor battery.
