That said Andretti itself was getting bullied to begin with cause the whole project. “ you need to update your facility” than Andretti built two state of the art facilities one in the motorsport valley of open wheel racing in USA and the other is at THE motorsport valley of the UK .” You don’t bring a manufacturer” than brings in GM as a technical partnership. “ they’re a glorified sponsor, we need you to build a in house engine rather than rebadging a Renault PU as Cadillac “ than they announce to join Audi in 2026 as an actual PU manufacturer. “ you don’t even have a car designed “ than release a design and promise to build it by the end of this year. It’s not even moving the goal post at this point, it’s throwing the goal post out at the parking lot.

I think this is the biggest reason why Congress is getting involved. Also its one of many things on their agenda its not like it takes up their entire focus, we had a whole UFO investigation going on not so long ago in Congress. Congress is looking at this because you have a US Media owned organization that is enriching only themselves and foreign owned franchises and then being anti-competitive by restricting an American owned franchise from participating. Liberty Media owns Live Nation which is already facing antitrust scrutiny. This just seems to be a further extension to that.

    OK SO
The US Congress is involved for a couple of reasons, legitimate reasons, here.
1 - Fair access to markets.
This looks *a lot* like F1 is denying Cadillac access because they're pissy about them selling Caddis again in Europe and teams like Merc, AM, Alpine, and Ferrari are blocking them to combat this. Those manufacturers largest market, by *far and away* is the US, you can damn well be sure the Americans are going to demand equal access to Europe.
2 - F1 does business in the US, if they do not have any *actual, legitimate, legal reason* for Andretti do not race, they're probably going to be in some hot water. The reality is that HAAS *continues to exist* and so long as they do, it's obvious F1 is playing favourites.
3 - US Automakers, specifically The General and FoMoCo are the most influential parts of US politics aside from Lockheed-Martin and Wall St.
The Gist is that F1 hasn't played fair here and Andretti is done playing fair as well. They've jumped through literally every absurd hoop and got denied because...well they just don't like them very much.
That's not good enough and now the Andretti's are throwing their weight around. Good on 'em.

    Couple of points I'd make:
    * The US government is massive, and the focus of the government isn't such a finite resource that getting Congress members onboard with ensuring Liberty Media (an American company) isn't stifling American jobs and entrepeneurship means taking *away* from other things Congress can *and should* be focusing on. Mostly, Congress passes things like Andretti's complaints off to Bureaus of apolitical entities whose job it is to enforce these things.
    * To any Andretti detractors complaining about this, I'd challenge them to show me *any* F1 team who wouldn't and doesn't regularly go to the Stewards with rules technicalities and challenges to ensure they are getting the absolute best advantage for their team. Andretti's tactics here are 100% in keeping with that, and shows that Andretti aren't the type who are naive enough to think that everything is solely resolved "on-track" so to speak. Andretti are playing for keeps and ready to go.

Andretti has been a huge name in American racing for all of my 65 years. Mario himself is 84 years old and won the F1 championship when I was 20. As you said he's a household name, but maybe a bit more than that, and in this case a source of pride.
They did everything the FIA asked them to in order to make application and as you said, it should have been said and done by now.
It's not about "hur dur 'Merica stickin' it to those stuffy Europeans" - for Andretti it's all about the actual racing. The cash is of course necessary but GM seems to have a few spare bucks laying around. And this isn't Ford trying to beat Ferrari, nothing like that. That was personal, to a large extent while this situation is purely the business of racing.
Getting the government involved, yeah maybe some people think it's overboard, but FOM really didn't give them any options, just a flat "no" for no good reason. Where's the appeal board? Well they found one.
The Andrettis are racers, fighters, what the hell do you expect?
Maybe they join and are back markers for a decade, then all of Europe can crow about the shitty American race team. But even lowly Haas has scored race points, so I doubt a GM-backed Andretti team would end up at the back.

That's pretty much guaranteed Andretti a place on the grid!
I'm delighted such actions are being taken to make F1 answer up and be accountable.
If Andretti can employ devious strategies as such, they'll do great in F1!

@@Redlingstein That is factually wrong. GM said in a statement that the registration process to be an OEM, the development and the supply of Power Units came down to timing. According to them, GM wanted to register as an OEM sooner, but the governing rules stated that the process would take time. And so that's why the Cadillac engine won't be ready until 2028. On top of that, the deal between Andretti and Cadillac hasn't been broken up. In fact, it appears that the opposite is happening and that the ties between the two entities are deepening. I think the deal you are referring to is the deal with Renault, which did indeed lapse. However, articles I've read point to that the deal could renewed if Andretti get a slot on the grid.

I'll put another question on the table. Let's assume that another brand is remotely considering to enter F1. A return of Toyota, for example. And then, 'Toyota' is seeing this breach between FIA and FOM. How a brand that's racing competetively on almost every other league except WRC is denied on the basis that it's not relevant enough. I fully understand that the way the FIA pushed for this was bad, and the FOM is probably reacting to that. But the consequences of this rejection could mean the end of another global brand joining in. Ford is surely having some serious second toughts after all that happened with GM going full send with a new entry. If the Red Bull Powerplant won't work, Ford will either have to buy Racing Bulls, or pull out, because a new entry will probably being rejected.

I will add that Al Davis in the 80's proved that a monolithic sports league could be sued for anti-trust and lose when he sued the NFL as owner of the Oakland Raiders to move to LA, and the NFL is a much bigger, more lucrative sports league than F1 is.
