That tipper train could be pulled by a ROCK ISLAND red and yellow version of the Maersk locomotive. If that is '70s enough for you.😉😂 That locomotive is a GP-40 lookalike (I think it's supposed to be a GP60) and you'll need to remove the dynamic brakes from the long hood for it to be accurate.
Looking great. I'm glad you got most of the parts. Hold on to those metal axle wheels as they always prove handy for heavy train cars. I'm thinking of designing a 4-4-0 or 4-6-0 steam engine to go with the vintage train car MOCs soon. :)
Modern batteries are slightly larger than those back in the 1960s as tbey now have an extra casing that helps resist leakage. Remember how those old part-used and forgotten batteries used to leak and damage what they were in? It can still happen, but it's much less likely to happen nowadays.
You can try with AA batteries or if really shorter with AAA batteries and use lego plates and/or tiles to space out. I think modern AA batteries even have more capacity than the old C-batteries...
That is going to be an interesting train locomotive to MOC, yes something 70's LEGO style and tipper truck color scheme.
When I model in red/blue/yellow, I always think of Fabuland vibes to the design. Any chance that series had a train set ?

A Diesal Locomotive should pull it, like 727 or 162 even 723 might work. Good 1970's style. You could even modernise them up too.

Honestly, if I have to pick a train to pull it, it'd have to be a scaled down Set 396, Thatcher Perkins, with all the classic colours.
I see a MOC of a tipper truck inspired train engine in the near future. Red, blue, yellow with grille bricks and the same lines as the truck.
