  • In this week's short video episode, I share a few recent scenes of a great white shark in the shallows near a couple surfers and share a rare opinion on shark behavior. While I strive to stay away from opinion on my channel, what I say in this video is merely for discussion purposes.

My son is a lifeguard on Huntington Beach every year and every day I am absolutely terrified he will be the victim of a shark attack. These videos showing how often sharks are around humans like this one, you would think would make it worse but actually it makes me feel WAY better as it shows how often they see us but we don’t see them and how utterly disinterested they are in us. Far from the mindless eaters or worse aggressively persistent killers that the media tends to portray them as. They seem more like dogs than serial killers. To see how often these types of placid interactions occur vs. the amount of bites each year makes the heartless killer scenario laughable. If only they would stop making “Shark movies” and more people watched your videos the terror and hate many feel toward these large predators might be assuaged. Regardless, thank you for helping this old Dad to feel better!!! Please keep it up!

Also, if the media could stop using the term "shark infested waters", it would help the image of sharks. They aren't infesting water, they live there. That's like calling a neighborhood "human infested" (though that's maybe more accurate...).

I used to surf Huntington Beach and Scuba Dive around Laguna and it was always in the back of my mind. When I was doing it though the Great White shark population wasn't nearly as "healthy" as it is now. Through conservation efforts they have really allowed the GW shark population to boom. As someone who enjoys ocean sports I say gee thanks, why don't we reintroduce grizzly bears to southern CA why were at it. I've luckily only seen one shark in the wild and thankfully it was a horn shark, saw it off of Catalina.

@@brianl3966yes thank you! They always talk about the ocean like humans own it and sharks are a pesky nuisance to them. It’s so frustrating. The ocean belongs to the beautiful creatures in it and humans have no business invading it and then getting angry they run into sharks. It’s their home, if people don’t like it they shouldn’t go in the ocean. It’s completely avoidable.

My late husband back in the day took me to a beach in Northern California that he grew up on outside of Point Arena. He learned how to fish, surf fish and other activities here. We stood there watching some sea lions in the surf then all of a sudden they made a mad dash for the beach. My husband then pointed to the side and we saw a fin break the water. That memory really makes me wish we had drones back then.

By the way if you see seals or seal lions around that's a good sign that there are probably big great whites around doing ambush style hunting. Thats the circumstances where you have attacks that are from them miss identifying humans as seals/sea lions, but you've still had a life threatening bite.

I would think that surfers in the area being droned might become attuned to the fact that a hovering drone might mean there's something "interesting" nearby, and be on guard. That said, perhaps it's hard to be watching for waves and noticing a drone or even hearing it. Or perhaps they're fully aware of what it means and that's just one of the things that goes with the territory. Love watching this stunning footage every time and am in awe of both the sharks and the surfers!

First, I would like to say THANK YOU to The Malibu Artist for these incredible videos .. I really look forward to each one .. I've been fascinated by Great Whites since I was a kid, so these videos are a dream come true ...... While not the perfect analogy, what comes to mind here is similar to what I have observed here in rural NJ .. There are stretches of roadway in which deer will come to the edge of the road, grazing, and fully aware that the passing cars will not stray off the pavement - unlike deer in a lot of places that run as soon as cars pass by, these deer know exactly where they are and the boundaries, so when a car comes along, they might simply look up then continue to graze without darting away ..... The sharks here seem to have a familiarity with humans, esp the surfers and boats ...... Now, having said that .. the 2:30 point in this video has a guy standing out on the observation plank of the boat ( sorry, I don't know the exact boating term ) .. There is a vid here in youtube in which a guy is standing on a similar observation plank, and a huge great white comes up out of the water from directly underneath, inches away from his shoes .... Great white sharks, like every other living creature, get hungry .. And I do believe they can be territorial .. Attacks that are more than just exploratory bites do happen ie poor Simon Nellist ... No one can deny that the possibility of capturing an attack on a human is very real .. The question then becomes, if this happens, will The Malibu Artist upload it or keep it private ??

These videos make me feel much safer swimming in Greece and Corfu. There have been several fatal shark attacks in these waters, but not for several decades. A 16 year old girl was killed by a Great White Shark just 150 yards from the shore in 1951 in Corfu Old Town.
So it is incredibly unlikely to happen compared to the already very unlikely chances of attack in California, South Africa or Australia. But it's not impossible, just almost impossible. Apparently the Mediterranean Great White is its own distinct species and has more in common with its Australian cousins than its American or African cousins.

@@cady__ Same thing happened with whales. We're still slaughtering them. Yeah, it's criminal, I agree. Man will never stop being a selfish, ego-driven killing machine as long as we have access to weapons - whether it's a harpoon, spear or fishing rod. I personally hate "big game" fishing. I hate how we pillage the ocean for food when much of it ends up in Las Vegas buffet tables and then thrown away. The ocean is still the favorite dumping ground for the world. Garbage, pollution in every region. Most people don't care and most don't pick it up. We have a lot of reparation to do.

With all living beings there are mean individuals who might do one harm in an encounter. Just like humans, the bad ones make the headlines.
Jim Abernathy , diver and shark advocate, has shark friends. Check him out, like Carlos, he educates people about these wonderful beings that scare us so much.

Ive been trying to find out where Jim Abernethy is - I've watched his videos many times, his relationship with Emma the tiger shark spanning 20+ years is incredible. I don't take to some of these high adrenaline clips of messing with sharks for a photo. But this " friendship" has stood the test of time. His videos seem to be 6-8 yrs ago...I'd like to know he's ok. Perhaps someone else is running his dive operation.

I really do think they are there in the warmer water for something other than eating. Maybe it is colder water which triggers their hunger ?
Maybe they actually know this area is not a feeding ground considering they seem to have known routes around the ocean ?
It's all very interesting. I would love to see your filming in a colder deeper feeding area to see how they behave differently.

Once I was out in the water in Hermosa Beach. I've been in the water 10000 times before. But this one time, I had this sharp stinging sensation go through my entire body. It felt like my body knew something I didn't. At first I shrugged it off, but it got worse and I realized my body was telling me something dangerous was close to me and to flee. I got out of the water and my body was almost in shock. Later that a day a great white was spotted in that area. It's amazing how the human body can sense sharks for some people like me but not others lol

We need to take into account that Great White Sharks living on the coast of California are predominantly shark juveniles or 'teenagers'. A juvenile Great White Shark's feeding habits and prey are very different to an 'adult' Great White Shark. Adults often move on from fish, rays etc. - they often move on to seals and sea lions, which are of course far bigger prey. Therefore are humans seen by 'teenager' Great White Sharks as too large and not their common prey type or size? Hence the lack of predatory movements/attacks seen in this video. If a juvenile was swimming under my surf board, I would certainly be anxious - but - if a a 15-20 foot Great White Shark was swimming under my surf board I would be close to a heart attack! Anyway, just to confirm I LOVE THE MALIBU ARTIST, what a great channel xxx

    • @TheMalibuArtist
      @TheMalibuArtist  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I mention this in many videos but recently I filmed more adults than juveniles. Just wait and see the footage! The size comparisons that will come with it and how the larger sharks react to humans is especially telling. And I'm talking about 14 to 16 footers, not juveniles.
