Been surfing for 40 years...and that whole situation looked sharky. Overcast , alone-ish , offshore habitat , calm..and always when we are the furthest out..lol. Ahh the things we do for the love of surfing .Glad safe
Surfing a bit south of Santa Barbara, CA a few years ago and the guy I was surfing near said holy f@ck! I turned around and saw a juvenile great white come up to the surface about 7 feet from me. Probably only about 4-5ft long but it was an unforgettable experience. Caught the next wave in, felt exhilarated and weirdly excited. Told my pregnant wife with excitement and her mouth dropped 🤣
Whoa, it's really spooky when they come that close. Happened to my wife last week at our local, and I was standing on the shore filming her (we do that to get better at surfing thanks to Kale's great advice). Footage can be seen here th-cam.com/video/lWQUM9YAXbM/w-d-xo.html
Hi Kale, just wanted to say that I loved the video, you have a real positive attitude and no ego. It’s really inspiring and I hope you keep producing more fantastic content. All the best 👍
We had the first fatal white shark attach ever here in Maine a few years ago and it certainly occupies space in my mind each time I'm in the water, especially alone. Perhaps it's a good reminder that humans aren't" always the apex predator in every situation and to be humble and respectful of our ocean environments and the big fish that call those places home. Cheers Kale
I remember hearing about that, all my years surfing Maine sharks never crossed my mind with how cold the water is. However things are changing in our waters. NY just had their sharkiest summer yet and I fear with how warm the waters getting we might see a similar future on our coast
Hey Kale, also surf SA and that first break isn't my local but I have surfed there a fair few times. Having dived with great whites in the bottom cage of the Rodney Fox boat, I was more excited than scared. I'm glad you were able to get over the little shock you had and not let that ruin surfing for you.
I live in California and I love the ocean. Have surfed on and off for a few years, but my fear of these animals keeps me out of the water for long periods of time. Which I totally hate because I literally get depressed. The ocean is magical and I wish I had a better way to cope with this fear.
@@stephaniegarcia1841 there are a bunch of theories on it out there, from stripes indicating a dangerous animal thus making the shark stay away from it to the shark losing focus because it is likely colorblind and the sharp contrast making it harder to focus on for the shark but as far as I know nothings truly scientifically proven
There’s a certain smell in the water, also certain seaweed, that always gives me the “this water is SHARKY” vibes. Being the only guy out is also does it. Surfed my whole life. Seen 2 shark breeches. A spinner, and a Bull. Gotta love surfing. One of the few sports where there’s the potential for a beast with razor sharp teeth eating you for dinner!
The shark is cool, but those dolphins! I live in the Netherlands and I get exited if a half-dead jellyfish washes upon the shore. I’m so jealous blue glassy waves. It’s winter here rn and the waves are grey and messy most of the time.
Bonkers! That would’ve kept me out of the water for a bit longer than that. i’ve been here in Japan at a place called Chiba for about 20 years, never heard even rumors of sharks in this area. Much respect for getting back in the water and turning it into a great day!
Just glad you’re alright mate! And thank you for your epic videos. I’ve learnt a lot from them. You’re an inspiration to get started on surfing man, cheers 🤙
Thats cool you could share the experience mate, and do exactly what you did. I'm from deep south SA, we allegedly had a fatal shark attack at one of our main surf spots and that definitely cleared the lineup for while, but luckily conicided with a bout of onshores, so by the time it swung offshore again I think most had forgotten their fears and gotten back out there. Its definitely something that will always remain in the back of your mind here in SA.
Hi Kale! I really enjoy your videos. You have truly helped me live a better life. I was surfing in the Pacific Northwest of the US and was waiting for a wave while standing because it was somewhat shallow at the time and a seal (grey with black spots) appeared out of the water suddenly and I jumped because I thought the seal was a shark. It swam around me very close and then swam away. It was one experience I won't forget. Keep surfing and following your Dreams!
As a San Francisco surfer I hear these crazy stories from people out there about great whites but have never seen it. I am scarred for the day that it happens and I see one but it had never discouraged me from going out. As always I love your content and you’re an amazing surfer
Yes we surf every day on the Australian south coast of NSW and we had one come up to my wife last week. I was standing on the shore filming it! Crazy to see through a lens and it was a very large great white shark. th-cam.com/video/lWQUM9YAXbM/w-d-xo.html
What a day you had! This video hit very deep for me and it can be real tough to watch these sort of videos but you did an amazing job talking on the topic of sharks. A bit over year ago I tragically lost my uncle in a shark attack in Tuncurry NSW. As rare as these attacks can be, they do still happen and I believe every surfer does need to have it in the back of their mind and be respectful of their home. Sharks are beautiful creatures, but we need to take them seriously. The question of being scared vs being exhilarated from an experience like that is hard and I get that. Surfers need to value the risk of having a good wave or session over possible shark infested waters. Which I get can be hard when there’s barrels. However, in my opinion i really do think it’s getting worse as well. Not from surfers, but the fact that there are more and more shark encounters than there has been in a long time. From what I know it’s being caused by global warming making the sharks come to warmer waters to feed. *correct me if I’m wrong* The point is that us surfers need to be more aware of these beautiful creatures and be more mindful of the potential dangers that these situations can lead to. My big tip is to use the App ‘Dorsal’ which shows you shark spottings in the area, anywhere from a day ago all the way to the last month so we can see the risk before we step foot in certain waters. I think it would be smart for someone like you to promote an app like this. Other than that, this video was very well said and some epic waves there at the end mate.
Sorry about your Uncle that's awful. We used Dorsal to report our encounter which we actually caught on video. My wife surfing right near a Great White Shark just last week on South Coast NSW th-cam.com/video/lWQUM9YAXbM/w-d-xo.html
You instinctively know sometimes. Those Dolphins + Seaweed + Cloudy = :/ Normally Dolphins aren't that bunched together and so close. It looked like a warning sign to me.

Maybe not recording was better, that was your own moment with an amazing animal that you'll remember forever. You're right, the sharks are always there, they're just not interested in us. Glad you got back in man!
I too live in GW country. I have been surfing for 55 years. I often wonder how many GWs have come and checked me out, and moved on. One? Ten? A hundred? Who knows.
Cape Cod, USA, here on the Atlantic is infamous for GWS in summertime. Experts say that they're around us in the water more than we think, especially at certain times. Anyway, that dolphin herd was a sign, but maybe surfing alongside they were also protecting you?🏄♂️🐬🦈
Was about to comment this but you beat me to it. That's the first thing I noticed when he was swimming with them they were so packed together. Very eerie. Great video!
Now that’s a day of experiences! Dolphins, Shark, Bees, Snake and Barrels!! Thanks for sharing mate! Just came across your channel last week and already learned so much. Decided to buy a new smoothstar and your ultimate surf skate program on your site. Got started with it on the weekend and already feeling great improvements. Thanks so much for your legit advice and lessons. It’s the real deal. Keep ripping and sharing! 🤙🏼
I’ve seen a Mako shark completely jump out of the water on two separate occasions at my favorite local spot in Carlsbad. It’s a little disconcerting. We do have juvenile great whites around here sometimes and there were a few attacks during the summers of 2017 and 2018. There are a lot of fish on the reefs around here. There is a regular seal that feeds in the same spot always…right where the left will connect on the inside.
Wow! What an experience. I most definitely would’ve been shaken up to. But I agree, it’s their home and we have to surf another day. Great video and amazing barrels!😮
OMG, when @8:55 came around and I saw the bottom of your board, I thought you must be dead set crazy! I recall surfing off a bombie very close to seal rock, Philip island, once and was so spooked when a seal popped up next to us. Vic Hislop and his very large great white catch in this location was clearly making my heart race. Your board looks very much like a seal from underneath. Does that not worry anyone these days? Seems to be a trend. What's with that ideology. 🤔
Its those dark glumly days, there bad luck. Similar thing happened to me first time I used my gopro surfing. Caught a wave, then on my way back out i duck dived my second wave. And so did a shark about 6ft to 8ft away from me. It went through the wave just like I did heading straight out like I was. Only seen it's fin and top half of its body come out back of wave. Made my self go back the next day. Never let fear be master 👊
You did the right thing, take a quick break and head back in a bit. Exactly what we do here and I surf the shakiest beaches in the world. Have been bumped by one and gone right back out
My parents grew up in Henley Beach. I grew up on the other side of the Plane way over in the freezing Tundra of Minnesota (towards the north/center). Then moved back and started my surfing journey at 18 yrs old way out and over in South Australia where you're as close to Antarctica as most places in the world. I even surfed the south coast of Kangaroo Island. Be safe my friends! Big Man eaters out there!
When you are out the back with an overseas visitor who asks what to do if a shark comes, the traditional reply is “Just swim for the shore as fast as you can!” When they say “ … but you can’t swim faster than a shark!!”, you reply, “No, but I can swim faster than YOU” I really loved that doco of the South African free-diver who kind-of made friends with one of his local tiger sharks. He talks a lot about sharks’ body language and how they signal that you are in their space and are about to get bit. Lovely video and although I felt cheated of the ‘full national geographic’ moment on camera, enjoyed it and the comments too.
Man I’ve had soo many shark encounters. Growing up in South Africa we usually keep surfing if you can see them swimming another direction or give it a hour or so and go back out. Craziest had was in Western Australia over 5m great white came between all of us and attacked and killed my mate in the water. That kept me out the water for a few years and took many more to get confidence up again. Weirdest thing even the most pumping waves you just had no feel or Stoke to even go out for a paddle. Had a few break downs in the surf from bubbles off the reef, seaweed etc that shook me up
Yeah same in south coast NSW. I caught a great white shark very close to my wife who was surfing on film last week th-cam.com/video/lWQUM9YAXbM/w-d-xo.html
Hey mate I’m in sth Oz and surf the bottom of Yorkes, Eyre and KI and get a scare every now and then, especially when the seals start dropping in on you. You did a vid a while back on the ocean guardian shark shield, I’m looking at getting one. Any reason you are not using this product?
Oh my, I’d honestly be really nervous surfing there with those gloomy conditions alone haha, luckily I surf in Cabo, Mexico and never really worry about sharks
We had a GW swimming around us ,we didn’t even know it was there… only way we found out was when a westpac chopper flu over, then banked and a crew member came out onto the skid and yelled at us and pointed it out… that day heaps of weed and overcast.. 4 to 5 metres… EASTCOAST…
HAd the same experience on the NSW south coast about 2 years ago... Like seeing your favourite celebrity in the urinal at a pub... You don't want to to hang out there but it's pretty amazing. Absolutely stunning when they breach, imagine the power!
Yeah I saw a great breach at my break. My friend and I looked at each and said is that what I think that is? It was a steady paddle back in to say the least.
One day at Stanwell Park a few years ago with just 2 of us out, a great white breached like that. It probably would have been the size of a juvenile around 3m, fortunately it was at least 300m out to sea. It was a small day and we were riding a shore break which was running down the beach along the shoreline so we just kept surfing. Probably only 25m from shore and shallow enough to run if you had to. Lot's of fish that day and earlier when I was alone I'd already encountered a small bronze whaler getting a little too close for comfort and got out for a bit until the bait ball it was chasing dispersed. I am surprised the dolphins let you get that close, I tried once and 2 rather large dolphins either side of me, "escorted" me out of the area! Although they did have a large number of young calves.
Me and a mate has the same thing happen to us last time we were out at pondi but it was a smaller bronzie and the bees got inside our car through the airconditioning so when we through we had got em all out we started driving again and they were flying out the airconditioning
I was at barbwires at trestles, last 3 people out for the night, sun was long past set but still some twilight, when I got bumped really hard from underneath. I immediately started paddling in and my buddy on shore said he instantly knew why. I have watched a seal hit my board, I have had fish land on my board after a duck dive, this felt huge and triangular, I asked an expert about it and I’m pretty sure it was a Juvenile great white. We get a lot during summer. I was also in the water at San O when a girl got bit at churches. Taking my xgf surfing for her first time and reassured her that you never encounter sharks, then the lifeguard calls everyone out of the water lol.
Where I'm at in Oregon we have mostly great whites. And my buddy and I carried in a local kid who got bitten on the leg about a year ago. I got some gnarly photos of it and the kid made a full recovery and surfs the spot all the time. It's just the reality we live doing what we love. Ive surfed for 30yrs and was a rescue swimmer/ocean lifeguard for 5yrs and have seen a few bites and a few sharks in my time but I always keep in mind it's their house and I'm just visiting, so be a good guest.
Surfing alone, sunrise, south of Jacksonville Beach pier, 2-3 ft break, shrimp boat headed in throwing the trashed catch overboard, catch wave, turn around to head back out, approx.18" fin coming at me about 10 yrds. away, waves come in blocking vue of fin, flip around & paddle like hell to beach & could not stand, my legs shaking so bad. Lessons learned: no sunrise sure, especially alone. Get out of the fracking water when shrimp boats pass close to the break! From now landlocked used to be surfer. Where's that wavepool!!! dTurner
I think I recognised that spot. Is that where I met you last year at that same time? Locals told me there were only dolphins there 😳That second part of the video was sick bro, those barrels were intense
I grew up in SA and know that break very well Kale… One night, with wayyy too much ‘early 20s bravado’ (aka stupidity) we all went and surfed that main break of that bay on a full moon. Absolute stupidity, but a great experience. I also recall one session around the other side of the peninsula, surfing with only 2 other mates out and paddling straight over the top of a 10 foot shark, I’m almost certain it was a bronzie so it was a bit less intense (still rattled us though!).
Noice Kale I just moved to Florida been surfing New Smyrna Beach here shark bite, capital they call it here lol and I knew I’d eventually have encounters now living here a few months no great whites but I’ve had one swim up to my nose and I’ve duck dived right under one riding the wave from behind looked it right in the face luckily those were just small but did see big boys out the back before 🦈
Had back to back run ins with juvenile white sharks in San Diego. First time was when a young GW swam right under my buddies feet and then came up to the surface a couple meters south of us. I thought he kidding until I saw it pop up. A day or two later at the same spot, another juvenile broke the surface of the water about maybe 3-5 feet away from my side. My buddies face was pure panic when he witnessed it breach right next to me. Both times left me scared, but I never got the sense that these sharks were really interested in nibbling on us. My buddies and I stayed and surfed until we were content.
That’s an incredible sight to behold! I live in Florida, there are plenty of sharks out there but most of them are on the smaller side. I’ve gotten used to having sharks 5ft and under around, but I start to get scared when they’re 6ft+. On my 28th birthday, I had a 5ft shark swim right underneath me in the lineup 😍 I think sharks are really beautiful but I definitely want to keep a respectful distance from them generally. A lot of people get bitten down here and don’t even report it because it is that common. But with little sharks it’s just little bites. One of my friends got bit by a bull shark though, he needed surgery 😢 but he’s back out there!!
I know this sounds crazy but I think that the breach was probably so beautiful to watch but I would’ve had a heart attack and the fact that you stayed in the water I mean you are brave
The first place you went where the shark was looked so sharky I don’t think I’d have even gotten in so good for u but please be careful and u really shouldn’t surf alone!!❤
Here's another crazy story, Went out for a quick surf on a sunday morning, off shore perfect punchy glassy crystal water waves, we where about 10 people at the peak, and when I went for my first wave, a big a** 13ft great white shark jump right behind the lineup, I completely panicked and didn't handle the situation like you did, so I went in as fast as I could and fortunately got out of the Wavepool in time, close call
Surfing off Point Danger in Torquay Victoria, with a surfing buddy. Caught couple, went back out to my mate sitting waiting for the set. Then he turns ghost white. I asked what's up? A dead seal just popped up next me... I have a look around him, to see a torn up carcass floating only a metre from him. Without a word we both made the decision to leave the water at the exact same time. Didn't see the shark but we all know the animals that do that kind of thing, are not good to be around.
This is the reality of surfing basically anywhere. There's always sharks. All the time. I've also seen a massive one before. Just swimming peacefully. Didn't even give my group any attention. Just went straight past us. Left us alone. I got out the water, but my friends just went back in after 10 minutes and surfed for another hour while I sat on the shore.
Oh dude wtf kkkk, I live in south Brazil (Florianópolis) where there's no sharking attacks at all and fear sharks a lot. Could you imagine surfing quite near a great white like that? This video just got the $h1t out of me. Good to see you're ok Kale 🙏😅🌊
DUDE, You Could Be Ben Gravy's Brother, From another Mother. Even, When Ben Does the Aussie Accent! You ARE The Shark LEGEND!! Yeeew🤙. Shine On, Brother! ☝️✌🕊🌊♾🤙⬆️
Very common to see great whites here in San Diego. It's a nursery. It's unnerving to see "men in grey suits" in the line-up. I call it quits when I do but never let it discourage me from going out another day. You should check out The Malibu Artist's channel. He's got a lot of good videos of close encounters. 👍

When you are out the back with an overseas visitor who asks what to do if a shark comes, the traditional reply is “Just swim for the shore as fast as you can!” When they say “ … but you can’t swim faster than a shark!!”, you reply, “No, but I can swim faster than YOU”
I really loved that doco of the South African free-diver who kind-of made friends with one of his local tiger sharks. He talks a lot about sharks’ body language and how they signal that you are in their space and are about to get bit.
Lovely video and although I felt cheated of the ‘full national geographic’ moment on camera, enjoyed it and the comments too.
I wish I had the nat geo moment on camera!
Had a few break downs in the surf from bubbles off the reef, seaweed etc that shook me up
Mate that’s so heavy and I’m sorry you had to experience such a thing. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏽
@@KalesBroccoli yeah been some hectic days, goto learn to power through the times there’s nothing you can do if it’s meant to happen it’s meant to be.
Yeah, here in northern New Zealand we get a bit of this scary stuff, good on you for staying calm.
Yeah same in south coast NSW. I caught a great white shark very close to my wife who was surfing on film last week th-cam.com/video/lWQUM9YAXbM/w-d-xo.html
Hey mate
I’m in sth Oz and surf the bottom of Yorkes, Eyre and KI and get a scare every now and then, especially when the seals start dropping in on you. You did a vid a while back on the ocean guardian shark shield, I’m looking at getting one. Any reason you are not using this product?
I saw a juvenile great white breaching in Northern California! I basically never go back to that spot lol
Had a similar experience in Vleesbaai, SA. Had a great white do two full breaches about 50-60m away from me.
In South Australia I was born, heave away, haul away! (sorry couldn't help it) great vid and glad your okay
did you notice the emu in the bushes near you at 7:56?he was also watching you
Sick vid bro
Oh my, I’d honestly be really nervous surfing there with those gloomy conditions alone haha, luckily I surf in Cabo, Mexico and never really worry about sharks
Beautiful clear waters
Glad you’re OK! Cool van l love those curtains!
Love the intro! Super cool🤙
Gotta love Yorkes , also was at salmon hole car park the other day and some people told us there was a massive one out
Not a great idea naming spots online.
It’s Salmon Hole, it’s not exactly an epic slab
@@undertheblue2006 For sure, but thats Irrelevant. It's still someones local. Just basic etiquette
Looks a bit like Pondalowie Bay?
Yeah I saw a great breach at my break. My friend and I looked at each and said is that what I think that is? It was a steady paddle back in to say the least.
Yew! They are practically surfing buddies up here in Humboldt County, CA
Glad you went out again…on your most seal coloured board 😂
I use ocean guard freedom on board, because I surf in an area where we have had many shark(bulls and tigers) attacks. That was a great video.
Kale get a RPELA mate made here locally in Perth WA they def give you peace of mind
9:32 Footage looks incredible!
Gnarly. Thank you for sharing
Where is this beach?
I grew up at Christies Beach. SA
@@melaniecroft2089 without kicking off a raft of local blowback, all I’ll say is it’s on the mighty Yorke Peninsula. 🤙🏼
You’re lucky mate. Overcast day. That mimics the light of dusk or dawn
You had a full Aussie experience in just 24hours 😂 glad that you’re ok!
Wave pool doesn’t have sharks …. Or does it 👀
Noice Kale I just moved to Florida been surfing New Smyrna Beach here shark bite, capital they call it here lol and I knew I’d eventually have encounters now living here a few months no great whites but I’ve had one swim up to my nose and I’ve duck dived right under one riding the wave from behind looked it right in the face luckily those were just small but did see big boys out the back before 🦈
Had back to back run ins with juvenile white sharks in San Diego.
Wow what an experience!!
Been surfing 30yrs had 3 confirmed run ins with sharks, one just a month ago, its the one you dont see that you should be worried about.
What's the water temperature like down there at this time of year?
I’d say 19!
Hi Kale, my ribs click and hurt a bit when i surf is that bad?
Best to ask a good trainer what’s going on :)
How did you not keep paddeling
Kale: spots a great white shark; starts paddling for a wave
also Kale: this is not my wave.. stops paddling
me: WTF paddle paddlee paddleeeee!
Get a drone, film the area and you will probably be surprised
What happened to your shark bandz? I find it odd, that they have a disclaimer which says, it doesn’t work on great whites due to their hunting nature
I saw one in Sydney body boarding 20 years ago big
Here's another crazy story, Went out for a quick surf on a sunday morning, off shore perfect punchy glassy crystal water waves, we where about 10 people at the peak, and when I went for my first wave, a big a** 13ft great white shark jump right behind the lineup, I completely panicked and didn't handle the situation like you did, so I went in as fast as I could and fortunately got out of the Wavepool in time, close call
Always heaps of dolphins looking after you at that break
Those cartoon sharks are nothing to worry about. They're only one pixel thin and you can get rid of them with the erasure tool
Gnarly
The real locals! On a different note, what board were you paddling?
Lil shape I’m working on!
Aaaaahhhh! So bummed you weren’t filming!!
Me too ☹️
So you surf early in SA or do you wait mid morning
Whenever the waves are goodn
Were you using some sort of shark guard/ocean guardian technology?
Nop
This is the reality of surfing basically anywhere. There's always sharks. All the time.
I've also seen a massive one before. Just swimming peacefully. Didn't even give my group any attention. Just went straight past us. Left us alone.
I got out the water, but my friends just went back in after 10 minutes and surfed for another hour while I sat on the shore.
Great to see Glenelg barrelling like that. ;)
9:19 me tryna convince myself to stay in the water after i felt a lil brush against my foot
ironically i get the creeps surfing that second spot... for some reason never at the first one. Have met those dolphins a bunch of times though.
always love your editing and choice of music!
Thank you so much!!
Damn definitely did pull off the bandaid surfing solo when that spot looks so sharky 😅 that's scary haha
Yeah... I'm out 😶🌫
DUDE, You Could Be Ben Gravy's Brother, From another Mother. Even, When Ben Does the Aussie Accent! You ARE The Shark LEGEND!! Yeeew🤙.
Shine On, Brother!
☝️✌🕊🌊♾🤙⬆️
Wait a minute. You went back?! 😅
Yea fuck that😂😂 I’ve seen a few down south in nz. It’s always a bad felling when u know you have a few minute paddle back to shore
Very common to see great whites here in San Diego. It's a nursery. It's unnerving to see "men in grey suits" in the line-up. I call it quits when I do but never let it discourage me from going out another day. You should check out The Malibu Artist's channel. He's got a lot of good videos of close encounters. 👍
No wonder I'm not surfing any more...😂😂
