- This month, I set out to film kayak fishermen in California. I was curious to see if any great white sharks could be found nearby. Kayak fishermen are actually a water activity I've not documented with sharks nearby in the past. That's because I haven't tried. This is footage from my very first day of trying. The results are not surprising.

I don’t understand why anyone would drag a fish behind a kayak that it’s just asking for trouble, you’re ringing the dinner bell for all kinds of sharks to come at you.

and a kayak is so small. Easy to tip over, not much protection and stability at all.
Especially since kayakers have been attacked by Great Whites, Tiger sharks and Bull sharks.

I’ve been open ocean kayak fishing in So Cal. For 30+ years and it’s really disturbing to see these guys dangling fish over the side and basically training whites that kayaks mean food. I get that they’re trying to keep their catch fresh until they go in, but it’s just careless and naive to essentially troll a few large halibut baits next to their kayaks in waters well known for whites.
100% agree, i also kayak fished for almost 25 years. I hope they see the video and the penny drops regarding this matte!

It’s amazing to me how timid that first shark was with the kayakers. It wanted that dangling fish so bad, but didn’t go after it. It seems to me that hanging the fish over the kayak like that is pretty dumb.
Maybe shark decided that this must be a trick by human to catch him!!!!!.....he wasn't falling for it!
Agree - most shark encounters with humans , the sharks instinct is that this is way too easy ,
Human exhibiting stupidity in this instance, dangling a distressed fish as bait. Then later on when attacked, they become helpless victims while the shark is only doing instinctively what it's born to do, catch food.
Luckily for the stupid fishermen, it's not a tiger, much more a bull shark, that's out there...
This is why you should have a cooler instead of a stringer. If nothing else you are just asking for a shark to grab your catch
If anything, that shark showed great restraint. Personally, I think it's very irresponsible of these kayak fisherman to put sharks in this situation.
They are in a vessel with basically zero protection, dragging live, flailing, bleeding fish. When something does end up happening to one of the fishermen, it will be the sharks that are made out to be the monsters, which can potentially end up getting many sharks killed. It's ridiculous the way they drag those fish (not to mention cruel to the poor fish).

As someone who fishes in saltwater in a kayak I know to never, ever keep a fish on a stringer! Where I go in Florida the issue isn't Great Whites, but bull sharks and alligators/crocs. And holy crap I thought all saltwater kayak fishermen knew not to do this!
there's always people who think the risk is okay and they're the ones who will get hurt if things go wrong. Too bad this trains sharks to associate kayaks/fisherman with food and builds courage in them smfh.

@@haverscutie They're mostly for bait, and cost about $400. For keeping fish most kayak anglers use a cooler or fish bag.

I think what made the situation a little bit less tense is that most sharks in the area this was filmed seem to be young. As the videos of this channel show they will often be very careful if they face a thing what is as big as they are. Maybe a greater shark, 15 feet long or so, would have acted different?
But I think it is indeed a very risky behavior to put a wounded fish in the water in areas in which greater sharks of any kind are known to be present. I mean it is the same why you should not have food in your tent if you sleep in bear-areas. You almost ask for troubble...
The animals are no monsters, but they are powerful and you should not create a situation which increases the risk of an attack.

Why did the shark follow the kayak? Just for the halibut. I'll see myself out.

Mate you truly deserve a medal for this work I hope this gets publicised how it’s possible for shark week to exclude you is beyond me!
In a way I’d gladly watch shark week become a thing of the past in exchange for people realising that your work reveals far more about shark and human behaviour and treating these animals like circus shows this is true noninterventionist observation research at its best
It's simple for them to exclude him. He gives information without dramatizing. They need people that just instill fear, not people with a brain. So he probably won't be invited.
@@UserNamesAreObsolete here here It’s such a joke that young guy who used to work with them in South Africa has remarked time and time again about Osearch And their practices being barbaric Whenever he is interviewed outside of the shark week stuff he also has a habit of dropping lots of subtle hints concerning not wanting to stress the sharks and wanting to study them in their own environment as much as is possible I have noticed even the guy from the American East Coast will not haul them out of the water and uses tags that detach! How long is shark week going to back these idiots!

Did you see when it spotted the drone shadow ? then spy hopped while trying to bite the shadow, and realised the drone was above it, and then trying to jump out of the water at it so these drones need a good zoom and a pilot with this level of knowledge to avoid affecting the sharks behaviour if the drone is made and we’re talking in a totally different medium
These sharks are visual predators in particular great whites and mako. No wonder there is a problem with predicting the behaviour. Interacting in any direct medium, not only completely changes their behaviour and also risks over stimulation and potential for injury particularly if they are swimming outside of the cage or in one of those useless Perspex boxes.

Note to self... when Im out fishing offshore in CA, and I see a drone hovering over my kayak, change locations and prepare for code brown.
Most all kayak fisherman I know in SoCal, myself included, are using the kayak cooler bags, clipped to the front deck of their kayak, to avoid dangling 1/2 dead Yellowtail off their kayak. Between Seals and Sharks, something is going to rip it off your game clip and possibly dump you in the water in the process. A few years ago, a local kayak fisherman landed a 30lb Yellowtail off La Jolla. He was bleeding it out in his kayak, when a 12' Hammerhead swam up parallel within inches of his kayak, tipped his head to the side, trying to peer into his kayak, attempting to see the yellowtail. He obviously followed the blood scent trail up to the kayak. There's just too many sharks, mostly GWS, here in SoCal and you have to be smart.
Do you not bleed your catch or do you bleed it in the cooler?
@@emmansk7 I just bleed it really fast in the kayak, quickly rinse it, zip it in the cooler back and clean off the deck. Then paddle quickly away from the kill site. You just have to be careful and a little lucky.
Again, more great footage. I’m truly starting to believe that drones are by far the superior means to observe sharks.
But what if they can detect their presence? We need someone to do real world testing.

Thanks, I've had three (that I know of) encounters with GW while kayak fishing. And they were much closer than that. Within ten feet of me and closer. I about shit my pants the first time, and it's always scary to have them circling and swimming underneath.
It's good to see these videos, helps me understand them better. I would never tow fish. Regardless of sharks, Sea lions would not hesitate to grab a fish and they could flip a kayak over. They would also attack you if you tried to get your fish from them.
Spear fishing is awesome, but not for me. That's begging for trouble.
We had a spearfisher taken by a great white a while back where I live. All they found of him was a small part of his wetsuit. His son was with him when he was taken but got away safely. A while after that a diver was killed near where her partner was spearfishing. We're a known high fatality spot for great whites (Perth, western australia) but people still do it. Crazy.
Uhhhhh, how selfish and stupid can you be???? Kayak fishing, and any ocean fishing for that matter, is entering wildlife habitat and stealing whale, seal, shark, etc, food. You can find any of the 80,000 edible and medicinal plants that grow on the planet to eat. These ocean dwelling creatures cannot! Anyone who fishes deserves to be attacked!

I know someone whose kayaking & fishing friend disappeared just like that. Happened - as far as I can remember - in 1989, near a place called Port Angeleso near Seatle.
I kayak fish Santa Cruz and would see them at the surface from time to time and just minding their own business but seeing from drone view like in your video makes me wonder how many times have they been around and just not noticing them?.. awesome videos! Thanks!!
I live in coastal Northern California,I had a close encounter with a very large white shark in 2011.My kayak was 14 feet.The shark was at least 16 feet long.that encounter changed me forever.It was one the most beautiful,graceful and terrifying experiences I’ve ever had out there,and I’ve had many but that experience was truly magical. It was like encountering a very intelligent,ancient creature that knows more about you than you will ever understand about it.I feel like I encountered a creature that could only be compared with a Tyrannosaurus Rex…only way more intelligent and more ancient.Long May they live and balance the seas.
The shark working his way up to the Kayak is like a serial killer working his way up to his first kill.

I keep reading people shocked at the kayakers stringing their catch. Spear fishing requires the stringed catch to be attached to the diver or a nearby anchor line (No Kayak). Hahaha!
These sharks are intelligent. Their amount of caution is strange considering they are an assumed top predator of the sea, next to the Orca pod. Showing the sharks curious approach is so important. I love this channel! Many people have a vicious image of these majestic fish. Such awesomeness 🤙🌊

They’re in waters known to have whites so, yes, it’s surprising that they are essentially trolling halibut. Sharks may be intelligent and cautious but, there is plenty of other video evidence showing them going after chum bait chunks on the end of ropes, so you can’t watch this video and a shark being cautious and then make the assumption that the shark is going to leave the fish alone. Had the man left the fish in the water, it’s entirely possible that the shark would have eventually felt confident enough to grab them. It wouldn’t take much to pull the kayak over and who knows what would have happened after that.

The fact that the 2nd encounter was in shallow waters was probably the crux of the matter. The first shark was inexperienced and too cautious to attack. But the second one was big enough to take on the "large opponent" (aka the kajak), but the water was too shallow to dive down and build up sufficient speed to attack from below.

The Drone "pov" makes it extra interesting watching these magnificent creatures! Its amazing to see the Sharks react to different situations, & not act as "expected" (like eating the Fish or eating the Human). If Great Whites were the "brainless, voracious eating machines" that main stream media want you to believe they are, both of these kayakers might have been in the "drink" almost immediately! (or wrestling the🦈for their 🐟back)!! Instead, as I've learned here, they are very careful & curious of their world around them. I also learned (from Hal at YT channel; "Sharks Happen") that Great Whites are the only Shark species that actually lifts its head out of the water to see whats "going on" on the surface. 😊Great video!🚣 🎣 🦈BTW, do you think that Australian Great Whites are just a bit "grumpier" than their California counterparts? Somehow, I just don't see this same tranquil scene playing out with the Australian variety( they're the same species, but maybe more aggressive "Down Under"(and around Africa)??
Maybe Aussie great whites are grumpier bc they occasionally share ocean waters with big grumpy salties.
Great Whites are transient. One also only hears about the negative encounters, not the many times a GW was nearby and was uninterested and no encounter occurred. Therefore one is biased towards thinking that they are always aggressive towards humans. Here, in South Africa, we see GWs chilling in the surf near surfers all the time. I think they enjoy it.
the ones here in SoCal are probably teens or sub adults--they might view a Kayak as a larger predator...trying to 'filch' a meal might be dangerous or even fatal. Nevertheless, they might learn that they CAN, in fact, grab the catch without much danger; Now Hal from 'Sharks Happen' is of the opinion that Kayaks and boarders are a point of aggression for larger white sharks--THEY view the object as 'intruding' into their chosen spot to feed, hunt or patrol, and they act accordingly.
@@fenzirulfr Mexican, Cal, Oregon and probably Washington and BC white sharks have those expanding seal colonies (especially elephant seals) they patrol==big, fat and full of calories. These HUGE pinniped colonies of 'plus size', easy to catch pinniped snacks don't exist in Australia (or the Med for that matter, another one time hotspot of total consumption attacks by white sharks). White sharks are more mobile and their diets more varied: fish, rays, sharks, sea birds, reptiles, and mammals of various kinds. They are willing to take advantage of feeding opportunities when they happen. Some white sharks have simply adapted to a bony primate being a viable meal.
You COULD say that humans are the cause of 'unfriendly' white shark encounters: the US marine mammal protection act allows seals and sea lion number to expand;
White sharks are also protected from human harassment in many places, so THEIR numbers expand. With lots of food and growing numbers of white sharks, it's only a matter of time before we get more 'encounters'.
@@fenzirulfr Probably; the water in the surf zone is well oxygenated and warm so it allows younger/teenage white sharks to be 'switched off' for a while.
In the first encounter, the white shark checking out the seaweed, was exhibiting it's instinct to go after a potentially safer and easier meal. Interesting how it was associating the seaweed at the water's surface with the distressed fish that were also at the surface which too me, is bordering on abstract thinking.
Love what you do - so much learned from simply observing. Incredible to watch the shark approach and retreat with the fisherman’s catch
It's really neat to see how the shark uses the current to move itself around, what an efficient creature, basically perfect for their environment. No wonder there's been so little change in them over hundreds of millions of years of evolution.
So clever they chose not to evolve for the present. 🤣

I've lived in Malibu my while life, and there's an old story from the 80's about a half a kayak that washed up on shore with human legs still in it. I don't know if it's true or not, they used to keep shark attacks real hush hush, but its scared the kids for decades now.
In the 90's a couple got eaten while kayaking from paradise cove to pt. dume. two different kayaks, both killed.

Thank you for more incredible footage of these wonderful creatures. I grew up with JAWS and Shark Week so I have a healthy amount of fear and displaced panic when it comes to large sharks. This helps with the incongruency of what television/Hollywood and bad information tends to create.

Brilliant Footage,excellent voice.Makes me see these sharks as curious,almost shy creatures.I wonder if with the enormous scale of the shark fin trade,and how many hundreds of cubic metres of shark fins are massacred every day for the Chinese market,whether some of these sharks may have witnessed the distress of their fellows,given they sometimes roam vast distances of ocean.Maybe thats what makes them wary,the fish attracts,the human repels ?
I have come to notice that the shark seems remarkably intelligent, so much so that either based on experience and clearly has been doing this for a while, seems to know exactly how the kayak is pointed and continiously stays with in a radial zone of about say 30 degrees behind. It is evident that this shark knows exactly where to stay without being seen and it seems that it is testing this theory by going closer and closer to the kayak. That is just fantastic and phenomenal to see. I also know that some catches break free, perhaps the shark again with experience knows that the fish will make a break for it by going the opposite direction of where the kayak appears longer, now knowing it is a threat and thus will swim in the general direction of the shark, something the shark is waiting for. Could be or it could be curiousity.
People need to understand that we do not know anything, literally ziltch. In order to deem something a fact one must know everything of anything from then, now and what will be. This is just my personal take on what could be happening here based on my own analyses of what I am seeing, do not butcher me for it.

It seems to me like the shark can't make up its mind about taking the chance and snatching the Halibut from the kayaker. Maybe because they're close in size and it might not be familiar with kayaks. I'm kind of surprised to see that the kayak is yellow. Isn't that color known as Yum Yum Yellow because sharks are attracted to it.

That's really surprising to me that the fisherman would let a fish dangle like that. It's just ringing the dinner bell for smaller sharks even. A spear fisherman I know in the keys, says that the sharks he has to worry about are the lemons and black tips. They will def charge him for the fish and come back.
It's interesting that the shark appears to be in the range of 10' of length or so. This would imply a young adult fish and one that is on the cusp of graduating from a fish diet to sea mammals. That being the case two things seem plausible, the shark is uninterested in the catch of the two fishermen as it represents an insufficient calorie content for the effort it would take to feed on the halibut. You see this behavior as larger sharks swim in the company of relatively small fish without attempting to feed. Secondly, the shark may not be experienced enough to connect the kayaks to kayakers who would make a more calorie rich meal. This might be because while in transition from a fish to mammal diet the shark may not be fully conditioned to gauge a suitable target. The puzzling part is at 10' the presumed maturity of the shark seems like it would already be more aggressive in pursuit of suitable food.
Beautiful footage once again tho. Your videos are so stunning and relaxing and informative all at once. I hope these kayakers watch this video and get some education. I love also how you educate people with the beauty of the ocean and everything in it by your footage and how we are on a journey of learning with you. A lot has been written about the superb eyesight of Great White sharks, but that visual acuity obviously works just as well ABOVE the waterline, as evidenced by their ability to discern the front of the kayak, or perhaps the face of the fisherman, from the rear, whereby the shark ALWAYS closes in from the rear of that flimsy water craft. This biological fact about GW vision is sobering and frightening to contemplate.

Was wondering how difficult it would be to have a small bullhorn attached to a drone so you could speak to people...or even some lights like - Red, Amber Green for guidance
I've had them come right up to the kayak to check me out, and yes, they are usually looking for a free meal.
I kayak fish in new zealand take any fish im keeping out of the water where no blood would leach into water would have thought it would just be common sense to reduce shark intrest ?

There is a video where a large white shark attacks a kayak, and the person was pulled aboard a passing sailboat. Don't think they won't attack.

At some point if you’re able to film at night, it would be interesting to see the sharks difference in behavior. Assuming they do feed more at night, I wonder if part of the almost cathartic/inquisitive behavior you mostly observe is because the sharks have full bellies after nighttime feeding???🧐

Why would anyone string fish beside whatever vessel they use is beyond me. Then if something happens, rescue has to go out. Can you imagine finding someone half eaten???
It's kinda teaching sharks kayaks mean easy meals. Like how some have learned the sound of a spear releasing means food.
Have you looked into drones that are being developed to both fly and go underwater? I think that would be a huge enhancement for your observations.
That would deviate the purpose of the channel which is “to observe”. If a drone goes underwater, for sure sharks would notice them and have a reaction.
I will never go Kayak fishing, not that I ever planned to. The footage is really great thought and fascinating to watch. Last week a young man was eaten in Hurghada by a tigershark, it was filmed.
I think Malibu Artist was very kind treating this two men as if they naive regarding their shark training.
Seriously Guy.. You don't know that a sharks favorite food is a wounded fish? When a fish is in distress, after being caught and brought to the top, it sends out signals through the water that the shark picks up on. Than there's the blood in the water. I think a shark can detect it up to a 1/4 mile. I used to spear fish in Australia and go up to 9 miles out sea. We would see sharks all the time. Mostly Bronze Whalers, but also Blue Sharks, white and black tips if in shallower water. They used to come in occasionally after we shot the fish. let the rope out to let the fish tire out and bite the thing in half. I've been in another situation where there they got so aggressive, we had to go back to back and kick them away. Finally story, we were floating over a reef, with the boat, My brother and I, we would take turns in 'watching the boat'. Of course Big Brother assumed it was MY turn. Anyways, he finally realizes it, drops gear and swims after it. I see a Big Ole Spanish Blue Mackaral and I was going to spear it, but saw a Bigger shark to my left. I'm thinking if I shoot it, shark will eat it. S I didn't. Than I see another shark, another shark and I'm like wtf? Brother finally comes back with boat and first thing he says is "Did you see how many sharks are out here"? ... Yeah, we called it a day!

Ok im not a fisherman (hunter i get my best sleep while hunting) but with dead & dieing fish in the water for the amount of time the shark kept coming in & out. I wounder when fisher throws out line with bait if that makes shark want to see about that?? Before your videos i would believe sharks would come in hard ( attack??) To get dinner. Thanks to you my wasted time watching shark week needs to be replace# with your videos. NO JOKE , keep up your great research & videos, your a great teacher
The last kayak had a “shark shield” device. You can see the cable dragging in the water on the left of the kayak.
Indeed. @6:20 mark. As an observation, I wonder if it would have made a difference if the electronics module was in the water too, rather than just the bottom electrode of the antenna in the water(one electrode at the top of the antenna, near the module, and one at the end of the antenna).
You should have a drone that has a simple shark fin to alert people

Am I the only one who was rooting for the shark to get a free meal and pissed off that the idiots dragging the live flailing fish outside of a kayak in the open ocean saw the shark and drone?
how do you plan ahead as a ocean swimmer to minimize that contact? what do I do? I honestly feel like I can’t enjoy swimming in Malibu anymore :(
You always swam amongst sharks. Now you know they almost never attack.
You can take some precautions, don't swim at usual feeding times, around 5pm. Don't swim in overcast weather, and if you see seals stay out of the water. In fact, in Malibu, a shark attack has only happened once. So enjoy swimming in Malibu. 🙂

They don't seem interested because you film at a great white nursery , young great whites under 10 feet can't open their jaws fully , they have a separate upper and lower jaw that is connected until they get over 10 feet than it detaches and both jaws have the full range of motion to go after seals and bigger prey , let a 15 footer come through would be a very diff story more than likely
Just spent a few days in San Diego visiting family. Flew my drone around the sea lion colonies at La Jolla. Didn't see a single one. I have a lot of work to do in terms of determining the right time of day/year to find them.
