Just took mine apart and was amazed at how much debris was on the bottom of the plastic tub and lining the outside of the stainless steel tub. My washer was intermittenlty over filling and finding nothing wrong with the hose or the pressure switch, I decided to take the tubs out and clean them. Back together now and no sign of fill problem (yet). Do be careful with the plastic tub. I managed to put a 3 inch hole in the side with a the edge of a wooden scrub brush. Rough sand, acetone clean, 4 layers of fiberglass soaked in epoxy resin. Two inside and two outside. Did it in two batches one after the other. Cured it overnight and fix is solid.

I have an older KitchenAid washer very similar to the washer being worked on here. It leaking intermittently. I’ve watched your other videos showing common areas for leaks but can’t seem to find. There aren’t any obvious water trails indicating where it might be leaking from. I’m assuming it’s either the tub seal or pump. My question is is it possible for the seal to have an intermittent leak or will they leak consistently?

This is my favorite washing machine repair video ever. So simple and step by step! Can't wait for my next day off! By-the-way, what do you recommend for cleaning the scum from the inner and outer tubs? Vinegar, 409, Simple Green, anything else?
Thanks for your feedback! While you've got it taken apart, it would be a good idea to wipe everything down with vinegar to kill germs and deodorize (the vinegar smell itself will pass). Once it's repaired, we recommend regularly using Affresh to clean the machine and get rid of odor-causing bacteria and detergent residue: www.appliancepartspros.com/whirlpool-affresh-washer-cleaner-w10135699-ap4308494.html
Great Video!!! Thanks for all of the amazing detail!!! Question: How can we clean the washer, without taking it apart? I noticed there was some dirt/soap scum on the outside of inner tub and on the inside of the outer tub - the piece you were removing.
The threaded section that's left behind when we remove the nut (male). Is that supposed to come out with the inner tub or stay on the shaft? I can't get my tub out.
hole developed near one of the 4 hanging balancing rods. Kenmore HE top loader. Could be that the rod had something to do with wearing the hole into the outer tub. Hole is about the size of a pencil. The material is unknown to me. Can a hole in this material be repaired by some type of epoxy?
I was reading a blog where the person had the same problem with her old washer. She poured boiling water between the tub and the drive block. Hope this helps :)

We have a series 80 Kenmore. The outer tub cracked, and it seems to me this was caused by extreme wobbling when washer spins. Yet, upon disassembly, all springs as shown in this video are connected. I don't want to spend money on a new outer tub, so are there any ideas as to why this is wobbling so violently? It shakes the wall....thanks.
You may find you can fix the crack I would try, first cleaning the area thoroughly and lastly with rubbing alcohol. Then using super glue in and around the crack and then sprinkling with bakng soda on both sides around the wetted crack area Repeat wetting the crack area outline with super glue and then sprinkle with baking soda till you build up some on both sides. This super glue reacts to the baking soda making a very hard plastic repair. I don't know why it was so unbalanced Check the top ring is suppose to have a liquid in it to help reduce unbalancing issues. Take care

Would this work on an Amana Washer? Are the same tools needed as what you have listed? The wire from an underwire bra came out and got through the small holes of the inner drum and is stuck. I need to get it out.
It would really depend on the design of the Amana. You can go to our website and enter your appliance model number to view the parts breakdowns to see how it comes apart.
I found out what those are here recently, they are actually 3 of them ,when you buy a new washer it comes with locking pins so the whole insides dont move during transit, sometimes when you get a new washer it will come with a yellow string of sorts that sticks out the back, like a loop, you pull the string out, this in turn detaches metal pins that hold the base together and the pins drop in these little cups to stay in the for the life of the washer,i was taking mine apart and i was like WTF? never heard of them before, guess they dont want the assembly moving while they are beings transported new.
@@dntlss wow! What an answer! I took my inner tub out & scrubbed it after replacing the pump. The little cups i just left them where they are. Thank you 🤓
It may be stuck in there from all the years of residue. You can try and break it free, use a rubber hammer if you have one or a piece of wood to protect the tub/shaft so you do not damage it.
I cannot remove the inner basket, mind you it is an old kenmore and stuck to the drive block, any suggestions on how to remove it without causing damage?
Thoroughly soaking it with Rust Buster is the first, simplest thing I would try. If that doesn't work, you can give us a call at 1-877-477-7278 or you can chat us at our website: www.appliancepartspros.com/. We’re here to help 7 days a week.
I got the spanner nut off, and the tub cover off but the inner tub would not lift out. Then i read on the top of the inner tub it says non-removable ???. (what ever that means), but again the inner tub won't lift out. What now ?. Is mine some different model ?. (everything else was the same). The clutch is spinning but the shaft is not. the drive block looks ok from the top. Would that indicate a different problem ?, (such as the clutch or a broken shaft, ???).
shirleymae30 Not sure what model you have but I suggest that you post the problem along with the appliance model number on our repair forum and the techs can help you troubleshoot the problem.
The message on the top of the tub actually says, "Plug not removable". This is referring to a nearby plastic Philips screw-in plug that appears to be the fill-hole for the balance ring. We were told a few comments above not to try and remove that fluid. It's needed for balancing the tub. My inner tub was stuck, too. I got it free by giving the top of the grey metal part that the spanner nut screws onto (the drive block, not the shaft) a shot with a hammer while pulling up on the outer drum. (Best done with an assistant!) One or two knocks should do it. Don't damage the threads on the block's outer surface.
If you cant remove the springs on the outer tub you may have to just remove the bolts. They work with the brackets as a lever to tension the springs on mine; it's an Estate by Whirlpool.
Take used carpet pad-foam and spray adhesive to the inside surface of the washer metal exterior. About all you can do for that. Some deluxe models had such added when new. Take care

+Renée Bullen The block is separate from the tub, it could be stuck to the tub from all the build up over the years. Your washer should come apart just like the one in the video. If the filter prevents the block from dropping out you may have to remove it.
My Estate inner tub just won't lift straight up off the drive block. Feels like it's stuck, rusted or something else is holding it down. I've sprayed WD-40 around the edges of the drive block and inner tub hoping to free it loose but nothing still. Any tips? I need to get this off so I can order the outer tub from you ASAP.
Usually when things are stuck like that, the first thing we recommend is a thorough soaking with Rust Buster to dissolve some of the gunk that has it stuck. Then you may need to take something like a rubber mallet to tap it free. .
nvm it wasn't too long, mine was long enough. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! My 20 something year old washer is in desperate need of a deep clean. It stinks and so do all my clothes :(
I did everything as instructed, however, the tub still seems unbalanced when it goes into spin cycle. All my springs are good and the balance spring on the back is on. What's the issue? why does the basket bang up against the housing unit?
+Daniel Acevedo...This reply is a year too late, but I'm posting it for those who come across the same problem you experienced. It sounds like your washer's Skate Plate became misaligned when you removed your tubs. It's a simple fix...The part is not broken...It just needs to be positioned correctly Appliance Parts Pros part number: AP6008860
after leaving the thing soaking in wd-40 overnight, the inner tub [finally] let go. the inside sleeve of the inner tub is heavily rusted, so it needs replacement. the cause of the noise? seems there was a small nail between the inner & outer tubs! now that that is out of the way, it should run quietly again. sigh.

So i took my inner tub and top apart to deep clean it. It was seriously dirty. When i put everything back, the agitator is now on when i first turn it on (when the water is filling).....also after a spin cycle, water gets pumped in for a minute making everything soaking wet again....what could be the issue?
Perhaps you detached the tube to the water level switch and also reattached when partially full when water started.leaking to floor. You CANNOT reattach with water in tub or lies to switch. Empty tub below assembly where tube attaches and attach empty tube. Been there, done that.
my washer stopped spinning after I replaced the clutch it still was not spinning ...took my drum apart there was a sock stuck in between the buckets acting as a brake took it out good as new
Tap the center shaft of the inner tub with a rubber mallet to help break it free, rock the inner tub back and forth then tun the tub and rock it back and forth again. It may take a while but the inner tub should come free so you can lift it out.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The unit we're working on in the video is a used unit, and we didn't have too much trouble. But you're right, sometimes it can be tough.
whatever you do, DON'T use a dremel and a cut-off wheel and destroy your inner tub like I did! It makes for a MUCH longer repair waiting for the new inner tub to arrive (IF YOU CAN EVEN FIND ONE!) I got lucky and found one a the only ones left in the entire country. Out of production, Out of stock.
@@broncobra out of curiosity, aren't these direct drive washers been made the same for the last decades? i know that mine was made in the late 80s and the tub has that "comb" lint filter underneath and the ones made after that they did away with that part and put little plugs in them because the tub sits a hair lower but the tub should fit the same either way, there are plenty of tubs on eBay,i believe they are around 160/180, i know some people dont deal with eBay so not sure if that was your case or what exactly, let me know, i'm interested.
@@dntlss Hello, I have a Maytag MTW5800TWO, super size Stainless steel tub. No lint filter. I checked everywhere? Ebay included. Finally found a place in CA, that had a new old stock one. Everyone "had one" on their website, until I tried to order? Out of stock, discontinued, no longer available. Even major appliance stores near me couldn't find one. Even a Maytag place couldn't find one? The place in CA sold it to me, NIB, for $65. Can't remember the name? Something like "spare parts on the shelf" or something? I looked everywhere? Their is NO lint filter on mine at all. The plastic liner is the lint filter? lol. They are simply not available. The plastic tub liner was no problem to find. The places that didn't have the tub wanted around $300 for it. Thanks.
@@broncobra I see, stainless steel is the keyword here,i have a old Kenmore 80 series that belonged to my sister in law when she was in college, shes about to turn 60,lol, so that gives you a idea how old this washer is, im not too far behind in age, anyhow this tub is made of steel with that grey porcelain finish and i have found a few of them for around 160/180 or so,i was just curious but your situation is slightly different than mine. That lint filter is very interesting,it looks like a flying saucer but it does its job, mine had years of lint attached to it,looked like a fossil,im going to reuse it once i clean the tub real good, the lint filter is unavailable and im famous for my research, i have found parts i needed in Russia before for whatever harebrained project i was working on and i haven't been able to find one of these filters, not a one.
Patched the outer tub, probably a coin broke it. I used shards of plastic from parts of the drum to solder over the crack after spot welding them with a solder gun. Use a low heat soldering gun or you'll screw it up. Springs are giving me a problem putting them back. Good video, thank you and youtube, I'm just bad at this stuff...but it should all work.
If you're trying to get water out of the balance ring, DON'T. The balance ring is a part that is filled with fluid to help your washer maintain balance as it spins. It may make a sloshing sound as you manually move the tub around, but that's perfectly normal. If you remove the fluid from the balance ring, it will damage the washer.
lmao, 3 taps on the spanner nut and it starts to spin like a helicopter. In real life: 1) put looooooots of penetrating oil, 2) tap tap tap tap tap tap 3) more oil, 4) bang bang bang 5) more oil, more bang bang bang 6) get frustrated, bang bang, call few companies who would help you do it, only to get refused 7) angry, decide to dump the washer, buy a new one 8) frustrated at the market seeing overpriced junks and how you could save a lot of money by fixing your current washer 9) come back, repeat tap tap, bang bang, 10) cry, 11) drink 12) cry more 13) go back to step (1)

My question is is it possible for the seal to have an intermittent leak or will they leak consistently?
having brown flakes on clothes after wash cycle.... i used this video to take apart and cleaned drum and outer plastic tub... she was nasty with soap scum reassembled and no more crap on clothes. thanks for providing this vijeo
Glad the video helped you get the washer cleaned up!
Great video. Very professional and informative. I do not have a spanner wrench. What is the second preferred tool?
Go to Amazon and buy the proper tool! They are cheap, less than $20
broncobra thanks so much!
hole developed near one of the 4 hanging balancing rods. Kenmore HE top loader. Could be that the rod had something to do with wearing the hole into the outer tub. Hole is about the size of a pencil. The material is unknown to me. Can a hole in this material be repaired by some type of epoxy?
I want to clean the outside of the basket on a maytag washer. How do I know which spanner wrench I need?
I was reading a blog where the person had the same problem with her old washer. She poured boiling water between the tub and the drive block. Hope this helps :)
Great detailed video. Thanks so much
You're very welcome!
Do they sell the inner tubs?
What if there’s water stuck into the inner tub? Will that come out on a drain cycle
Silly Question, but can I take the tubs out just to clean and get rid of that smell?
Thanks dude, scratch that off of my list...
Awesome video. We're giving our tub a good cleaning.
i am having a hard time removing the inner basket it seems stuck do you have any suggestions?

Take care
Is that a TB123A spanner wrench?

Would this work on an Amana Washer? Are the same tools needed as what you have listed? The wire from an underwire bra came out and got through the small holes of the inner drum and is stuck. I need to get it out.
It would really depend on the design of the Amana. You can go to our website and enter your appliance model number to view the parts breakdowns to see how it comes apart.
what direction are the threads right or left hand
If you are referring to the spanner nut, it is standard threads counter clockwise to remove!
Um, beg to differ, standard threads are counter-clockwise to remove and yes they are standard threads.
Thanks must have been lacking coffee that day!
That dust cap is stubborn! What are those 2 small (they look like a tiny drinking cup) things below the frame? What are they for? Thanks
Thank you 🤓
Great video. Thank you!
+Elica pirrone Glad the video helped you get the washer fixed!
I also can't lift the inner tub out.
Should I bang the shaft with a hammer? Or is there a better trick?
It may be stuck in there from all the years of residue. You can try and break it free, use a rubber hammer if you have one or a piece of wood to protect the tub/shaft so you do not damage it.
Hit the grey metal part lower down, not the shaft. Lift the drum at the same time.
Ok, thanks.
Thanks for that tip!
GOOD tutorial!!!
Jay Beal Glad you were able to get the washer fixed!
I wonder if you could put insulation on the inside of the housing to make it quieter. Maybe use "greatstuff" foam spray to put a 1 inch layer......
Steven C I have never done that. They do make high density sound deadening material that is used in cars and some newer appliances.
Take used carpet pad-foam and spray adhesive to the inside surface of the washer metal exterior.
About all you can do for that. Some deluxe models had such added when new.
Take care
thank you for teaching me

Okay, our tub has not needed to be removed in over 20 years and is fused tight. How do we break that fuse to remove the tub?

It appears my drive block is attached to the tub. I also have the lint filter plate uderneath the tub. Do I have to release this to get the tub out?
+Renée Bullen The block is separate from the tub, it could be stuck to the tub from all the build up over the years. Your washer should come apart just like the one in the video. If the filter prevents the block from dropping out you may have to remove it.
+AppliancePartsPros Do you have any magic ideas as to how to release a rusted tub from the block I would be grateful. Thanks
+Renée Bullen Did you get the tub out of the washer or is it stuck in there still?
+AppliancePartsPros Yes I finally got it out but now I need to know how I can remove the bleach dispensing hose
+Renée Bullen As I put two star cracks in the outer tub in the process. I must have been to rough!
Excellent, is a usefully video

My Estate inner tub just won't lift straight up off the drive block. Feels like it's stuck, rusted or something else is holding it down. I've sprayed WD-40 around the edges of the drive block and inner tub hoping to free it loose but nothing still. Any tips? I need to get this off so I can order the outer tub from you ASAP.
Usually when things are stuck like that, the first thing we recommend is a thorough soaking with Rust Buster to dissolve some of the gunk that has it stuck. Then you may need to take something like a rubber mallet to tap it free. .
how long is that extension!? lol I need to get me one so I can take out the basket and clean my washer!
nvm it wasn't too long, mine was long enough.
It's a simple fix...The part is not broken...It just needs to be positioned correctly
Appliance Parts Pros part number: AP6008860
When you remove the inner tub the fluid in the top ring is normal.
trying this - got past that specialized nut but no way is that inner tub just easily coming out - it's always something, isn't it?
after leaving the thing soaking in wd-40 overnight, the inner tub [finally] let go. the inside sleeve of the inner tub is heavily rusted, so it needs replacement. the cause of the noise? seems there was a small nail between the inner & outer tubs! now that that is out of the way, it should run quietly again. sigh.
What is the wire that's in the shape of a sea that's between the outer tub and the inner tub

Been there, done that.
my washer stopped spinning after I replaced the clutch it still was not spinning ...took my drum apart there was a sock stuck in between the buckets acting as a brake took it out good as new
Super helpful. Thanks guys.
Can you advise how to get the inner tub off of a corroded shaft without breaking something?
Tap the center shaft of the inner tub with a rubber mallet to help break it free, rock the inner tub back and forth then tun the tub and rock it back and forth again. It may take a while but the inner tub should come free so you can lift it out.
What if you don’t have a spanner wrench?
You could try to use a wrench and a mallet to knock it free.
@@appliancepartspros I ended up using a flathead screwdriver and hammer. Got it to spin with a few whacks. Thanks!

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The unit we're working on in the video is a used unit, and we didn't have too much trouble. But you're right, sometimes it can be tough.
whatever you do, DON'T use a dremel and a cut-off wheel and destroy your inner tub like I did! It makes for a MUCH longer repair waiting for the new
inner tub to arrive (IF YOU CAN EVEN FIND ONE!) I got lucky and found one a the only ones left in the entire country.
Finally found a place
in CA, that had a new old stock one.

How can fix the out of balance of my Samsung Washer...
Patched the outer tub, probably a coin broke it. I used shards of plastic from parts of the drum to solder over the crack after spot welding them with a solder gun. Use a low heat soldering gun or you'll screw it up. Springs are giving me a problem putting them back. Good video, thank you and youtube, I'm just bad at this stuff...but it should all work.
annierose11 Glad the video helped you get the appliance fixed! Patching is not the best way to repair these, as it could fail again.
How can I fix the out of balance for my Samsung HE washer.. ....
Mary Ponciano I would check the suspension and make sure the legs/feet are level.
I need help how do I take water out of the outer tub
If you're trying to get water out of the balance ring, DON'T. The balance ring is a part that is filled with fluid to help your washer maintain balance as it spins. It may make a sloshing sound as you manually move the tub around, but that's perfectly normal. If you remove the fluid from the balance ring, it will damage the washer.
lmao, 3 taps on the spanner nut and it starts to spin like a helicopter.
In real life:
1) put looooooots of penetrating oil,
2) tap tap tap tap tap tap
3) more oil,
4) bang bang bang
5) more oil, more bang bang bang
6) get frustrated, bang bang, call few companies who would help you do it, only to get refused
7) angry, decide to dump the washer, buy a new one
8) frustrated at the market seeing overpriced junks and how you could save a lot of money by fixing your current washer
9) come back, repeat tap tap, bang bang,
10) cry,
11) drink
12) cry more
13) go back to step (1)
