I just got to see the BIG BOY about an hour and one half ago and what a thrill it was. All the kids were laughing and playing and when it showed up the kids didn't know what to think. Such a beauty
Wow this brings back some memories of a 10 year old little girl back in the mid 1960s with a beautiful steam train sitting basically in our front yard . I was getting curious as to why the regular freight trains I always watched daily weren't running that day . I soon found out why with my first sighting of a steam locomotive up close and personal .I heard it a great distance away and my grandfather who worked as a brakeman had kept it's retirement run secret from me .I did get to tour it and have a short cab ride in it across the state line to where it was on display .I am happy to say that same train and I are still going all these years later .So much for it's retirement .It was far too beautiful to just be abandoned .It was completely restored and I visit it every few years in Tennessee .Silly me thinking those diesels were impressive to my young heart and mind that was before I met steam trains .World of difference in the two .I am going to see this legend soon also .It is my absolute favorite train of all time .We might have been dirt poor but I was queen for a day riding in that old steam locomotive .Sometimes the best gifts in life are free, completely unexpected and a train is involved .May Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 roll on forever to brings us all joy and awe of it's legendary status ,beauty and power .

Think about it- the engineering/lives/science/dedication/resources/materials/craftsmanship/persistence it took for humanity to reach, perhaps, the produce the pinnacle of steam locomotives, coupled with the humanity and generosity of the folks that took time out for you (and, maybe others, over _their_ years).... this was priceless, and that is why you'll never forget!!!!
Man I'd love to see that thing in person. What a magnificent piece of machinery. I'll never forget the sound of that whistle. That was AWESOME! Thank you for posting this.
Got to see it at Rochelle, Il. Absolutely amazing. Over 50,000 people came to see it. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me. I'm not quite as old as the Big Boy but not far behind. My daughter and I drove 1 1/2 hours and there were so many cars waiting we didn't think we'd get to see it but we found a backroad and were able to get in and walk up to it and look inside one of the cars and talk with some of the crew. They blew the whistle every so often too. Yes, girls love trains too but steam trains are the best.
Saw 4004 on static display up in Cheyenne WY many years ago, but the sound and smell of live steam like this, is just unbeatable. A fantastic experience for any railfan's bucket list.
Took my 6 year old who is obsessed with trains (and the big boy specifically) to Rochelle to see it this past weekend. We saw it at the UP hub and then monday set up about 5 miles outside Rochelle to watch it steam by. It was a really cool experience and the kid LOVED it! 950 mile trip, but well worth it. Amazing piece of machinery.
A different type of energy. So massive ,so different. Raw horsepower that is so explosive. Glad the crew takes all the precautions for safety. Thanks for the video.
Oh how I love that voice!! And I remember from a few years ago in Ogden, UT how cool the steam feels and how amazing it is to be right there next to all of that beauty and power. Thank you so much for sharing and I hope that Joe Peach is on the mend!
100% Pure Awesome. I near West, TX (northern McLennan County). Very much looking forward to seeing its southbound run through Mexia in a few days, then later its northbound stop in West on the way to Fort Worth. Thanks for bringing this VRF!
It’s alive if you want a crowd tell them Big Boy is in town and I promise there will be a crowd ….What a thing of beauty it’s alive it breaths it talks and it runs love the Big Boy as do thousand other folks ❤️🙏🤕💪👍👑👑👑👑✝️
What a spectacular and powerful machine there. I love how this steam locomotive rescued a stalled freight train in Blair, Nebraska back on June 29, 2023
I used to pass by the Cheyenne WY yard where 4014 was restored. Truly a labor of love. I hope Union Pacific keeps her up steaming for a long time. A nostalgic reminder of my parent’s generation.
I’d love to see this thing in person, just hearing it run is a thing of beauty. I’ve seen the C&O 1601 at the Henry Ford, which is a slightly heavier locomotive that isn’t running, but both it and 4014 could double as the Almighty’s own chariot, that’s how cool they are!
I missed seeing Big Boy in West Chicago, IL back in 2019. I saw it this time when it was on the move east through the Chicago suburbs. There were a lot of people out along the Metra platforms at the various stations wanting to see history
BTW, you will hear the whistle on 1673 at the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum and it sounds a lot like 4104s! It's great to see Steam on the rails.
As an european who hasn't known about the Big Boy until now, I legit watched this video going like: "What's this fuzz about a steam engine, it's jusHOLY MOLY THIS THING IS ENORMOUS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL BIG STEAM LOCOMOTIVE WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE MARRY ME PLEASE"
I really wish I could’ve seen it. I live in Kankakee Illinois and it was passing through Momence, just 20 minutes east of me. If I wasn’t working that day, that really would’ve been a neat thing to see for my birthday.
Make America strong reliable and independent again!!! Why can’t we manufacture marvels like this anymore and be able to enjoy a constant reminder of the man power and dedication it took to be apart of that machine or wherever it went. I want to be reminded that we don’t make junk anymore. I wanna be reminded that this countries infrastructure and common aptitude is as strong and rigorous as its people. To be proud again. I don’t think it’ll ever happen.
I love reading that! All the flak that railroads are getting today... UP among them deserves a lot of it, but wow what a stunning PR move. The cost to restore this was the cost of a new one when it was built (adjusted for inflation).
2 of my Uncles were welders at ALCO during the construction of the Big Boys. I don't have proof that they welded on them, but... One of them was pulled away by the govt to weld on a secret exotic metals welding program. He never revealed it... My Aunt mentioned it at his funeral...
LOVE TO MORE OF UNION PACIFIC BIG BOYS REFRUBISHED BUT NOT WITH OIL PURE PURE PURE BLACK HARD CHUNKS OF COAL. COAL CAR AND BIG SHOVEL POURING COAL IN FIRE BOX😊❤🎉
@@voidjavelin23 Not necessarily true. In the past, some so-called "freight" diesel electric engines had steam generators added so they could be used for passenger service. And they have otherwise been used for passenger service such as the Southern Pacific using Fairbanks Morse Trainmasters to pull commuter trains. In the Amtrak era, for a long time it was common for the Coast Starlight to be headed by a GE P42 ("passenger style body) followed by a GE Dash 8-32B configured to provide HEP power for the passenger train. Sometimes you will see a UP SD70 on the front of the Coast Starlight. It is really how the engine is configured and how it is used that determines if it is passenger or freight. Although it is true that for the most part, cowl bodies tend to be used for passenger. But that is not definitive.
Well, there's your problem. The UP has no track in places like new york. The big boy can only travel on the UP system, as long as it can navigate the curves.
@Anitasemp I mean, they hurried the Big Boy through Chicago because they don't own the portion BB traveled from Bellwood to Dolton. An East Coast excursion likely won't happen, but I wouldn't totally rule it out.
I did not make it, either. 2019 seems a long time ago now, but it took a few years for me to be able to get to see it in person, and I live in the railroad's home city. It was back through my city, 5 miles away, and I did not go.

I got goosebumps when hearing UP 4014's whistle and bell. Such a beautiful steam locomotive.

It went thru a nearby small town earlier and I got to see it up close. Wild!
The amazingly large number of people who came to see a steam locomotive that was built before most of them were born. I wish I was there.
I was there in that crowd shot during the departure!
And to think, it wasn't that many years ago we used to climb all over that at the LA Fairgrounds.
