- TH-cam has a feature that is automatically checked that can disclose your location or general area to viewers. It's called "automatic places" and if you don't uncheck it you could potentially show people where you are without even knowing it. This video shares what it is and how to turn it off if you choose to.

hmm but i no restaurant or the like is mentioned ? it just says a place may be mentioned in the description, surely they are not allowing anyone to see the location the video was uploaded from ?
Nick, can this setting be turned off in bulk, for ALL the videos where it was enabled? Or is it on ONLY on the ones uploaded since TH-cam implemented the change? 🤔

Two days ago I applied for Monetization and whilst it may be a little early for an answer, I noticed that just tonight the creator support chat is on my video page despite not being Monetized. Can I assume this means that TH-cam is about to approve Monetization for my channel?. Regards William.

This is shocking. Why on earth would TH-cam want to make location information turned ON by default given the dangers of harassment and even personal danger that so many people face online nowadays? Thanks for pointing this out, it's completely unacceptable in my opinion that they do this. Thankfully I only have 8 videos published but I turned it off for all of them. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to turn it off by default for all videos.

Thank you VERY much for making this video, Nick. It does serve as a warning to those who don't want their locations exposed. I literally had to go into every single one of my videos and uncheck "Show automatic places". Hopefully everyone else decides to do the same.

Just did mine as well. Thankfully I just have 39 videos so far. Not how I planned to spend my time this morning, but glad thanks to Nick found this out sooner than later.
@@Cobaltdragon I have 28 videos on my channel so far, so yes, luckily it was just under 100 videos. But, it's worth it if you don't want your personal info out there

Protip: NEVER EVER publish your videos as public first thing. Publish as private, go back to details editing (the little pencil button) and then you might, of all things, see "new" things pop like the title and description box that may not show up when you just upload. That's actually about that feature that may fail to show when a video is newly uploaded, but that goes a LONG way in the recommendation system down the road. Auto-generated subtitles may also only show after you do this in the subtitles blue link that will eventually show. Plus, it will always give you a chance to triple check your video info like that Nick just mentioned.

@@Markothunder I don't think you understand what I said. I said TH-cam HIDES some options when you first upload a video and you only get to see them when you go BACK to the Details option. If you don't do that, TH-cam will leave title and description options blank if you haven't set it up in the default info in the customization tab. I'm talking about a potential glitch in the upload assistant first time you upload a video.

We needed this video and didn't know it. I saw this video after one of my subscribers made a joke referencing the area I live in. I make Elden Ring content, no one needs to know where I live!
This is so careless of TH-cam to offer personal information and willingly put people's lives in danger. By default they should have not checked it and allow people to check it that want their location known. Glad you caught this and made us aware. I always love your videos.
I TOTALLY agree. Could put people in unneeded harm without them even knowing! There are good people but also bad people here in TH-cam world, best to keep it as safe as possible

Careless? It's their "default" to add that. EAch time a software "updates" they do this, but ofcourse it's your responsibility to read the EULA and undo what they did. That's technology. Ofcourse, a these electronic turds are always packaged with necessary fix.

I had to turn it off despite me having location setting disabled really ticked me off. And then I had to answer that the video was not made for kids. This was really tedious! 😟😟

Hey nick I have a question, I read the description about the automatic places feature and its mentioned that it will show only the location of the places which are mentioned in the video ( if there are any ) otherwise it won't show any location , so is that correct , also is there any quicker way to turn the option off instead of individually doing it ?????
That is what the small amount of documentation says. Right now, there is no bulk way to turn it on or off.

Stuff like automatic places and allow shorts clipping are things that should be automatically turned off. I really am uncomfortable with this... Also, I think this is something we need to fight TH-cam over because this exposes the location of underage TH-camrs, and some people can be scary if they are stans. Not to mention people that are predators towards minors...

Unrelated question. How do I disable TH-cam automatic pause, you know if I’m watching a music playlist and after only 5 or 6 songs a video will stop and just stay stopped till I move my phone, not pushing something on the screen but literally just tap or slightly move my phone a lil and the video will start playing again. I only see ppl in videos suggesting an extension, not sure if I want to do it that way.
Is there a way to hide our location (nation) in the channel's about page?
In the monetization tab TH-cam said I had to set my location, but now the location also shows up in the about page and I don't want that. (This happened on another account, not the one I'm using here)
No, that information is public. Fortunately, it will be hard to find you based on country alone.
I am not a channel vlogger, and I only roast cartoons on my page. So this does not affect my channel at all. I love this video by the way. Keep up the great work Nick. You are amazing at what you do. ☺️

Thank you very much! It is incredible... I'll also like to add two things: first of all, to uncheck this feature, to do it is not available in bulk edit options. Secondly, as of my typing this, it's unavailable, COMPLETELY unavailable, to check/ uncheck this feature in the default upload settings. That's... truly unfortunate.
I became surprised a while ago when I discovered it is automatically unchecked, and those were the first two solutions that made sense to me to fix it; do a bulk edit, and problem solved. Then became FURTHER disturbed when that wasn't available, OR, to permanently fix it (going forward) by having it set by default.
So... Fixing the current videos is a new huge horror, AND publishing all new videos will mean you have to do it individually.
For me, a very small channel, it became immediately overwhelming to do a bunch of them each day, which I've designated time to do a portion daily, and still not be close, to completing it for ALL of my videos. I have less long form videos than shorts, and completed it for my longs, but to do it for all the shorts, it's a mountain of a task.
What's the solution for those who do not want this, and have hundreds or thousands of videos? What can we do for tangible change?
It will be super time consuming, if you're a shorts channel/ upload tons of shorts daily,to have to update this (before or after publishing many shorts) INDIVIDUALLY.
It's irresponsible, in my opinion to just have it automatically enabled.
It's upsetting because many people would not want this feature and many more people are completely unaware of it. Thanks for putting a spotlight on this Nick! Maybe doing a poll or quiz, or both, asking your community if they're aware of this feature can bring more awareness? I for sure, am curious to see those results. At the very least,more people will get to know about this issue. Thank you for sharing this!

It says "places mentioned in your video" so it would not be reporting anything you haven't already reported verbally in your video. But I'm wondering if they're going to add some geolocation data so it knows if your'e really there or if you're just talking about a place you've been or would like to go. either way, i'm going to turn that setting off because as of now it only says places mentioned, but in the future it could change to 'your gps location' and if they don't announce the change then you're unprotected.

Yes, in Studio go to Content, find the video you want and click on the Pencil icon.
@@NickNimmin Thanks Nick. I'm still not seeing the options. It's weird & I've checked on different devices albeit both android. For what it's worth, my location is turned off in The Google account for my channel. Maybe this is why I can't find these settings & honestly my TH-cam studio looks nothing like the example in your video. Maybe I'm accessing it via the wrong UI? Bare with me as I'm still new & Thanks again for all your help Nick.

Hi nick. I'm not a US citizen but most of my viewers are. is it allowed if I change my location in settings to USA ? (the location that you can find in "about" section)
No, if you put the wrong country, it can stop you getting paid down the road when you're ready to monetize through the Partner Program. The location setting does not help or hinder your content's reach so putting the US doesn't help you in that regard.

Thank you for the update. This is nuts😡 should be the other way around and people check if they want to share their location. Thankfully I am still small and have a few videos to go through.
Apparently this is checked on all my videos dating back to the beginning. Thankfully I only have 80 videos to edit. Not fun! What do creators do that have thousands of videos and are now exposed? I would say this is a big privacy blunder TH-cam enabled and I'm surprised there won't be legal consequences. In my case it's not a huge deal, but there are many creators who want to remain private for reasons.
1000 video's a 2 minutes = 2000 minutes : 24x60 minutes = 1,3888888889 days work 😱

Does it have something to do with monetizing ? I mean lets say some have choosen another country which he is located .
Just uncheck the automatic one. The video location is one you can choose to add if you would like to.

I spotted this when I uploaded yesterday. I think this has been put in to benefit Google searches - I can't see a benefit in TH-cam itself.

Every video currently. The option isn’t available in “upload defaults” in your settings.
