  • TH-cam is hard but there are best practices and strategies you can follow to make growing on TH-cam easier. Unfortunately, there is a lot of bad advice that is being spread around about what really works for TH-cam and the creators who follow this advice end up not getting the results they want.

      Thank you, Nick, for your great advices. I am wondering, I published a movie review on the new Black Panther, but my video didn't do well with what I first expected. With some advices of one of my friends, I decided to go back to my editing software and fix these issues, and reupload the video afterwards. I'm curious to know if I am using the right strategy to make my youtube channel grow better by taking notice of my mistakes and triés to fix it. Thanks again, Nick. Love your content 😉

    I started ignoring tags and my channels were suffering, the moment I stopped ignoring them my videos stared performing better. Posting a lot of videos also helped me a lot at the start and now that I'm trying to recover my channel. I'm not exactly disagreen with the video, I'm just saying that stating bold statements such as "ignore this" "this doesn't matter" isn't cool, I think the most important thing is to get to know your own channel, try some things and see what works and what doesn't, just because someone says "this doesn't work" it doesn't mean it doesn't work for you. We can't blame those who share their knowledge, we just can blame ourselves for not building our own knowledge

      I do agree with much you're saying here, respect for your hounesty! However, there has to be made a difference here between people who are mainly making content to get views and subs, and people who are making content because they feel an instinctive need to share their lives with the rest of the world.
      What I have learned until now in my three or four months journey so far: Don't sell your soul and dignity, only to get subs and likes, but be happy with the growing number of views! Don't try to force people to sub your channel. They will eventually sub IF they get a pleasant time watching your stuff and connect with your video's!

  • @TheWigglesMan2000
    @TheWigglesMan2000 ปีที่แล้ว +80

    One thing I learned the hard way is that the benefits of regular, consistent uploads are far outweighed by the negatives of rushing/cutting corners on your content. I have a very busy schedule and I was so focused on uploading on a schedule that I was cutting corners and rushing videos and my views TANKED. Now I only upload videos I’m 100% happy with, and though it’s definitely less often, they perform several times better than the others did before

      I agree. The people saying that have big channels with production teams and paid editors. Another bad piece of advice is 'make 100 crappy videos'. That's just a good way to get a bad reputation quickly.

    Crazy. I watch a TON of "Advice Tube" channels. As a new creator, I honestly don't know what and who to believe anymore. Kind of depressing to be honest. I could use some help with my channel as a newbie, that much I know and I've implemented so many recommend things without that much growth. Would love to see a "guru" or "advice tube" creator take 1-5 of us new creators under their wings, help us grow and document the process or journey via TH-cam for others to see first hand how it's done. I think that would make for compelling content.

      Make your youtube brand or name unique and recognizable, do NOT stray away from the subject of your content. If you're a food channel, don't throw in a sports video, if you're a music channel don't throw in a nature video, DON'T THROW OFF THE ALGORITHM!! Promote your channel, if there's a network for your subject content, try to get involved. Finally BE YOURSELF, people like to be able to relate to other people, don't try to be like somebody else. People see right through that!! Make sure your title and thumbnail are attention getters!! I'm a college football youtuber, it has taken some time and I have a long way to go but I'm closing in on 12k subs, that's the best advice I can give 👍.

    In marketing it is called "to create a persona for you product" which means that you need to imagine your "perfect" watcher/subscriber/customer and get into their "shoes" and try to think like them. Like : "if I were them, what I would like to see on my YT?" , "if I were them, what I would type in a search box" - and then you create/align the content that appeal to them / fulfil their needs/.

  • @switchunboxing

    Folks, embrace and accept being new. No matter HOW good your first months of content is, you’re going to look back on it in 3 years and cringe a little bit. Doesn’t mean you’ll hate it. But you’ll just know where you came from. Do your best and don’t overthink it, and don’t overwork yourself. Don’t expect the same results as people who have been doing it for years and years. Be more fair to yourself. Practice makes perfect and repetition naturally makes things easier so just believe in yourself and just know that you get better with time and you won’t even realize it. In my very first video I say to the audience “welcome to my first video. Production isn’t gonna be that great but it’s the content that counts.” Lol you don’t have to do that but that’s the mentality to have!

    • @PreacH0921

      My very first video from last year was still here. It's just nice to look at. Makes me remember my unsuccessful first half of 2022 but now I realized growing is still doable when you upload less frequently. You just need to get that sweet spot. You will definitely fail a lot of times but it is really doable to grow like that. I'm 38 subs to go to reach a great milestone as a starter

    I DO check analytics,
    urgh....
    I will continue to improve each video, I will persist and I THANK YOU for all your help and support!!!!

    This video is packed with useful information. What Nick says about coming up with a video title and thumbnail before the actual recording is so true. I used to struggle to title my videos after recording but when I began writing down my titles and designing thumbnails even in my head, things have become a little easier. In fact, before I record, I secure a thumbnail photo or any kind of B-roll I may need for the video editing process. Now I know better, that I surely need to record tons of videos for improvement BUT if I want my channel to grow, I have to actively track their performance keenly. Thanks, Nick!

  • @Electronzap

    Good tips! You have to test out advice, not just follow it blindly. If tags were what got someone 100,000 views, then using the exact same tags would get your videos that many views every time. If it doesn't, then that means that tags are not the main thing getting views. Focus mostly on making good videos, don't worry about finding some secret that TH-cam has to make it go viral, but do pay attention to what works, and what hurts as well.

    This is great. Lol at some of the nonsense out there about creating & publishing content / doing creative work. I’d love more industry talk, me being from music entertainment background there’s a lot of common ground. Regarding yourself as talent is step 1, networking is important, and getting help for tasks behind the scenes is essential. It’s too much of a grind culture, alone and isolated, editing at a monitor, for an algorithm instead of an audience …you know? I know you have touched on some

    Great information as always 👍 I don’t use tags and you are the second person to mention they don’t make a difference. Keeping viewers in mind, people only have so much time in a day. Plus they watch more than 1 channel. So better to focus on 1 or 2 quality videos per week than something every day, just my thought. Also I am still small and rarely have new subs, but I have noticed paying attention to my analytics that before my main viewers were not subs. Now a few months later my viewers are both subs and new almost 50% so I will take that as a win. Because I do book summaries, titles are the book I am covering. Next big step, getting more subs.

    Hi Nick. I have a question and would rly appreciate it if you could reply. I'm a small gaming channel and make walkthrough videos as gaming guides/solutions.
    So, suppose there's a new released game containing 5 chapters and I make the walkthrough video of the 1st and 2nd chapter of that game, but then the performances of those videos are bad if compared to my other gaming videos (like very low views within the first 24 hrs, low ctr, retention, and few ppl even unsub). Should I continue making videos of the rest of the chapters despite those low performance, or should I stop making the videos of that game and focus on making videos of other games instead? Thanks!

      Case in point, the advice is good, but that interpretation focusses on the word "crappy" rather than the real focus, which is making a quantity of videos where over the course of those 100 videos, you learn, by a process of trial and error. Having the thumbnail title in mind when creating a video is a very good idea! However, you may also take part of your content and condense it to one or two words that best describe it and use that as a thumbnail title. I believe that if the video has good content no one should have a problem naming their thumbnail. Thank you for your work, it helps a lot!

  • @LittleRestorers
    @LittleRestorers ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Great advice as usual but I have my doubts about making title and thumbnail first before making the video. Reason being , this is purely based on your type of content. I have a restoration channel ( and yes is very average) but for me I need to pick my next project first then make everything else work around it .. not the opposite. If you had a baking channel you'd probably have the finished cake as your thumbnail right 🤔

    • @NickNimmin
      @NickNimmin  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For the finished product, sure, you would take the photo and do the thumbnail after the build/cook. You can plan your video in that you know the recipe/project and have a basic plan on how the process will go. This can inform a tentative title. If something unexpected happens along the way, you can change direction on the title/thumbnail.

    I think all small creators should be pumping out videos for experimentation and knowledge purpose. A beginner like myself doesn’t know what quality is so soon in the game. You can pump out 3 videos or more videos a week and “still” put thought into it and analyze your date. You have to do both.
    I should add, I loved this video a lot! I’ve made many of these mistakes!

  • @LearnElectronicsRepair
    @LearnElectronicsRepair ปีที่แล้ว

    All very good advice Nick, thanks. However but I'm not sure how I could implement the last one. As I make repair videos, I have no idea when I start the video what I am going to find, whether I can fix it or not, and what main educational points (specific methods of fault finding, or learning about a particular type of component fault for example I can teach during the video) Therefore I don't really know what the title, thumbnail or 'unique selling point' of the video may be until it is finished. I publish videos of repairs whether I can fix them or not, because that is what happens in real life, and only by the end of the recording I know if this is likely to be a great video or an OK one. This doesn't seem to hold my channel back but is there a better way to approach that?

    • @NickNimmin
      @NickNimmin  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would be thinking about those things as you do the repairs and film. Once you have your main shots in the can, the nature of the story now has to come to the forefront as you approach the edit. This would be the point where you give serious attention to what the video is now about, and thus informing the title and thumbnail.

    The fact that I saw a new update a few days earlier, it is something with account termination, not sure if it's April Fool's related but once your channel/account is terminated and attempting to create a new account after you previously had it, the next one will be terminated as well. Is it true? It's like a Hardware Ban in any video game or an IP ban.

    I've found that so many people come to TH-cam expecting to be an overnight success. Most of the most successful people on TH-cam I've seen start out small and it took them years before they got to the point that they could quit their day jobs and become a full-time TH-camr. They treated it as extra income or a side hustle till they got big enough. Oddly enough most of these types suffer the least from burnout as well.
    You can put out a video once a month or so and work your way up to more as you get better at it and your base grows. If you go all in early, you have to push yourself so hard to try and make ends meet.
    It's even worse when you are doing craft type videos. There's a huge up front cost to make each video even if you are using a cellphone and household type lighting or daylight to film. My advice is if you are making something for other reasons anyway, film that instead. At least when starting out. As you start to make money reinvest it in your channel rather than pocketing it. Buy your materials and upgrade your tools for the craft or even your film gear as you go along and never expect to get rich quick. You might get there eventually but it won't be overnight.

    I’ve been on here since 2013 and still put tags and descriptions in each one. While I’ve improved lighting, filming and even editing…it’s just not consistent for me. I’ve also tried to niche down, but it’s already a time issue for one channel with one video a week-ish. Trying to do multiple channels has been a no-go.
    I do still enjoy posting, but trying to do all the things and promote everywhere else is another time issue since I work full time. I keep my humor and passion going, but there are times it hurts.
    Now my analytics are frustrating. Lots of drop off after 30 seconds. Changed my intro and still drops off. Lots of skips, but some replayed sections. Again, taking time to really trying to figure out the why is a struggle.
    I appreciate all your insight. Lots of great tips. I need to clone myself or we need more hours in a day. 😂

    A good video, but I think that the last piece of advice, to create thumb nail and title first, will be fully applicable only depending upon what sort of content one makes and how one's creative process works. In academic writing, the advice is often to write the essay, and then go back when finished and retool the introduction and title so that they are reflective of what is actually contained in the finished product. I think that this tip and Nick's tip both have their place, and you just have to figure out which works best for your type of content and your creative style.

      Think about the long game and develop a stray around that. That might look like this weekly: 1 video targeted at recommendations, 3 shorts to introduce me to people, 1 live stream to deepen connection with viewers. Or 1 video targeted at search, one video targeted at recommendations, 2 shorts and a live. The idea is to think about each feature and how to use it to achieve the goals you have for your channel or TH-cam business.

    Nice video Nick! got most of my question answered. I kind of agree with your opinion on file names and don't at the same time. Whatever you want to call your video is acceptable. However, the name of the thumbnail is where you should place your target keywords. because visitors who search in your target keyword can find your thumbnail on Google Images and get some views from there. most of my thumbnails show up on googe images with my target keywords.
    this is something i wanted to put out there.

    • @NickNimmin
      @NickNimmin  ปีที่แล้ว

      The thumbnail loses it’s file name during the upload process. The reason you see it in Google is because it’s relevant to the video that you made targeting the same keywords. The thumb file and would matter if you were embedding into your website but not on TH-cam.
